Please include a signature delimiter in your messages. This consists
of a , i.e., a '-- ' by itself on a line.
This allows your readers, when replying, to quote your text without
the signature and list footers since everything below and including
the sig delimiter is excluded when quoting.

You can easily automate this process by including the sig delimiter in
your templates.

Even if you barely have a signature to speak of, that doesn't make any
difference to whether or not you need a cut mark. You are being
courteous to other readers since at least three lines of text is added
to your signature by the list server.

To find out why these MOD messages are posted to the list instead of
private mail, please read the welcome message you received when you
subscribed.

Thank you.

It's known and fixed in the current beta. IIRC it's related to the

I have started using Windows 2000 later than you, but I _never_ had to boot

Only time TB! was involved was in one beta-version.

TB! v3.0 and Norton AV conflict bad enough to switch

2004-09-24 Thread Terry Frazier
I recently upgraded from TB! 1.62r to 3.0 hoping to get better IMAP
support. I did get that. Sadly, I also got a program that doesn't work
very well in other ways.

There seems to be a significant conflict between TB! v3.0 and Norton
AV 2003, such that if Norton is scanning e-mail TB! can't figure out
how to shut down a connection and close. This doesn't make sense to
me. Norton AV has to be one of the most common software packages
installed on Windoze computers. I know it does some things that create
problems, but it's the 900lb gorilla of AV software and everyone else
has figured out how to work with it.

Frankly, I have a lot more invested in my AV/firewall software than
my e-mail client, so if I have to change one it will be TB!. But I
have used TB! exclusively for five years and always been happy with
it. I'm not eager to change. But this is a dumb conflict.

Does anyone know whether RITLabs is addressing this issue head-on and
planning a near-term fix?

Re: TheBat! cannot close

2004-09-24 Thread Andrew Aronoff
Hello Mark,

FOA, thanks for your response.

> You might want to look into NOD32 or another AV solution

Well, actually, I don't want to buy another AV solution. NAV works
just fine with most e-mail clients. Seems kind of silly to buy another
product B due to product A's bugs. And, I don't know that my version
of TB! would do any better with any other AV product.

> I don't usually try to exit while TB is in the process of retrieving
> mail.

I don't either. I've already found that when the TB! Connection Centre
hangs, it *never* completes message reception. I have *no choice* but
to perform a hard reset.

> TB is in a locked thread

It's TB! that's locking the damned thread and it's inexcusable that it
never times out.

> ... TB can't shut down because it's waiting for Norton to relinquish
> its hold on a process that TB has no control over.

Of course TB! has control over it. It just needs to time out, let go,
complain with an error message and retry later. After all, that's
essentially what happens when I perform a hard reset. (Asking W2K to
reboot via Start, Shut Down..., Restart does *not* work.) A hard reset
ain't magic; it just stops all tasks whether they're ready or not. If
I can restore control via a hard reset, TB! can _certainly_ do
something better programmatically.

> Decreasing the frequency of mail checking might improve things.

I check every 10 minutes. IMHO, the checking frequency has *nothing*
to do with the problem. In almost every case, TB! hangs after resuming
from S3 standby (standby-to-RAM) if and only if I neglect to first
resume my broadband connection by browsing to some external site.

This is a _deplorable_ problem for an e-mail client under an NT-type
system. I've been using W2K since mid-2000. The *only* times I've ever
rebooted to kill a task were due to this TB! bug.

Re: TheBat! cannot close

2004-09-24 Thread Mark Wieder
Andrew-

You might want to look into NOD32 or another AV solution as a
replacement for Norton. I too have had my share of problems with the
TB/NAV combination - lng mail retrieval times, 100% CPU usage,
inability to kill tasks, and have not had this problem with NOD32. Of
course, I don't usually try to exit while TB is in the process of
retrieving mail.

I think the problem scenario is this: TB goes to retrieve mail, NAV
grabs the incoming mail to scan, and TB is in a locked thread waiting
for NAV to be done with its processing before handing it back to TB.
Then TB can continue putting the email in the right folder, executing
filters, etc. During this time NAV is working with the email in a
temporary file and copies need to be made, NAV checks permissions,
etc.

This is the way AV programs work and there's nothing wrong with this
process, but Norton AV seems to get its claws down very deep into
system processes to the point where nothing else can be done in the
meantime. I believe what's happening is that TB can't shut down
because it's waiting for Norton to relinquish its hold on a process
that TB has no control over.

Decreasing the frequency of mail checking might improve things. I have
mine set to check every five minutes and that seems to keep everyone
happy.

Excellent! Excellent! I turned off e-mail scanning for Norton A/V
2003 and TB! shutdown normally. I don't know what other factors --
sleep, standby, etc -- affect it as I haven't experimented yet.

This *is* dumb -- an e-mail program too stupid to handle scanning
of incoming messages by common third-party packages. I mean, how
many people _don't_ run some sort of third-party A/V? Maybe it's
just TB!'s tolerance of Norton. In any case, quite disappointing
behavior from a package I've used and relied on for years.

  Thanks for the tip.

Re: TheBat! cannot close

2004-09-24 Thread Andrew Aronoff
Hello Terry,

> But I _cannot_ get TB! to shut down.

I have this problem, too. The only way I can shut TB! is to reboot.
It's inconceivable that such an action should be necessary under W2K
SP4, but there's no way to kill the task. I can't do it with Task
Manager and "KILL -F" at the command line doesn't work, either.

AFAICT, the problem is caused by a very bad interface between TB! and
NAV. (I'm using NAV 2002.) Before I configured NAV to scan incoming
e-mail, I *never* had this problem. However, blaming the problem on
NAV is too easy. It's TB! that I can't kill as a process; I firmly
believe that there's no good reason for this other than some very
sloppy programming.

> Has anyone found a solid solution to this?

I have noticed that the problem is most likely to occur after I resume
the PC from standby. If I use the browser to connect to any web site
first and *then* start up TB!, the freezing problem does not occur or,
at least, seems to occur less often.

Yes, I have cleared the CC with the Abort button. The IMAP is cfg'd
to disconnect so in some cases there isn't anything in CC to abort.
Even in such a case, and where there are no apparent processes
running in Task Manager, I still get the "some tasks are now active"
  warning.

I don't mind killing the tasks manually, at least for now, if I can
  just find them.

No, not yet. I may give MozillaMail a try this weekend, as there is
a new app I want to try that is written for Moz but won't run in
FireFox. I do use two different IMAP servers at different hosts. But
TB! isn't giving any indication that would lead me to a specific
  connection problem.

I used 1.62r forever and never had a problem. But last week I
upgraded to 3.0 to try the IMAP capability. This problem only occurs

Since I upgraded to version 3 I have not had this problem once.

Before version 3 my bat! would "lock up" (during message download
from any of the several mail servers I use) several times per day
and I would have to kill the task from Windows Task Manager. Abort
never worked for me either. Very frustrating - especially if I
  forgot to restart the Bat!

I did learn that I could make the situation better if I used the
Dispatch Mail on Server and use Read and Delete and/or reduce the
number of messages in a batch if many had built up.

Has anyone else noticed the action buttons are now mis-labeled on
  the "Pick e-mail addresses" dialog? (They are now 4, 44, 3, 33, r,
s - not sure when this happened - hardly ever use that dialog - not
  a big deal really )

I never have. Mind you, I'm still working with a stone-age version of

There isn't, as long as there are any tasks active, TB won't close.

When you're connecting to your server have you tried to abort the
connection from the CC, I don't mean to close th CC, as that merely
hides it, but using the Abort button.

Did you try other IMAP clients, to see whether they've got problems

I am not running any plugins nor proxies, though I am using Norton
  A/V to filter incoming/outgoing mail.

TheBat! cannot close

2004-09-24 Thread Terry Frazier
I've been perusing the list archives for tbudl, tbtech, and tbbeta but
I can't find a solution to the TB! "some tasks are active" problem.
I've tried setting IMAP servers to disconnect, entering /EXIT from the
command line, looking for the .IPC file, etc. I don't seem to have any
extraneous temp files.

But I _cannot_ get TB! to shut down. This is very irritating, as when
I do a force quit with Task Manager I lose some of my preference
settings.

Has anyone found a solid solution to this? Any help appreciated.
