Future of TB* mailing lists

2020-05-09 Thread Andrew Savchenko
Hello All,

It is 2020 out there and TB mailing lists seem to be a little outdated.

Screenshots being stripped from the messages unless it all fits in 25Kb,
famous "Current version is 8.0.18 | 'Using TBUDL' information" footer
attached to all messages... Perhaps it is time for a maintenance?

Things that come to mind, in no particular order:

* Increase size limits for attachments.
* Remove or, at very least, update "current version" footer.
* Consider merging TDUDL/TBBETA into one.
* Move mailing lists homepage to a separate domain.
* Modernise lists website, enable HTTPs.
* Ensure lists historical data is available and easily exportable.
* Collate available TheBat! documentation / FAQs / Tips.
* etc.

Thoughts?

Before you started the Maintenance Center, did you recreate the index
file as per my suggestion? Could you access the messages?

Now you have an error in the message base. I don't know what the error
message means.

Is it the same folder?

I don't have any reply option in the context menu while in the
message, highlighted text or not. I have "Reply" in the context menu
when right-clicking on the message in the message list.

I have "Reply" and "Reply to all" in the drop down menu under Message
in the Message Viewer.

I cannot find "Reply to all quoting selected text" anywwhwere.

I know that HTML mails with embedded images and image attachments work

Hi Marck, the following is an email you sent me several years ago. Still valid?

-- Begin copied message ---
Dear Jack,

@18-Nov-2017, 9:14  -0600  (19-Nov 05:19 here) Jack S. LaRosa [JSL]
in mid:1683949350.20171118231...@charter.net said to MFPA:

LG I'm not sure we can add attachments, but maybe it would be okay
...

It would.

It is.

M>> I have never noticed anybody getting "trouted" when they posted links
M>> to screenshots. So it has been accepted, which I guess means it is
M>> acceptable.

JSL> Thanks M. I'll see what happens.

Here's the lore:

Attachments (inc screen-shots) are perfectly acceptable (although HTML
messages are frowned upon because they invariably double the size of
any simple message and our transmission facilities are provided FOC by
a generous host, on whose generosity I /know/ none of us would wish to
over-impose).

...HOWEVER...

There are limits to the size of permitted attachments. 25k on TBUDL
and 75k on TBBETA. If your screen-shot is small enough, attach it by
all means. You can even chance it. The worst that can happen is an
automated rejection from the Mailman server.

I hope that clarifies things.
