Re[2]: BayesIT in 2.04.7 and 2.04.04

2004-02-26 Thread Terry
Hi Doug,

I have been plodding on telling BayesIT what is Junk and what is not,
about half and half, but BayesIT refuses to do anything on its own. I
understand that this started with 2.04.04. I am about to upgrade to
2.04.07 but from what I've read that only fixes a search problem.

Can anyone shed light on this?

Ah, I found out. You post to the list. Since I posted it has picked up
 3 spam emails. But it's missed 5.

Sounds about right. I've trained it with over 1700 spam and 7000 ham
e-mails and it's just starting to pick up about 80% of the incoming
spam. I currently have my score set to 1 to identify junk with no
false positives. I've had spam with a score of as little as 1.

I assigned Mark as Junk to a hotkey. It makes continued training a
little easier. :)

restoring registry: socket errors, retrieving bunch of dupes

2004-02-26 Thread dAniel hAhler
Hello ,

I once went to a backup (image) of my system partition that was two
days old and recognized strange behaviour while fetching mail,
probably because of the last message marker stored somewhere in the
registry, I assume - but as you can see this is a bad idea..

this highwater marker should be stored with the accounts, I propose.
I took a look into thebat's registry settings, but could not find
anything highwater related, so there has to be something else that
confuses thebat if you restore it's registry entries from two days
ago.

At first catchup (after restoring zhe backup) I received Socket errors:

[02:22:48] C: Connected to 127.0.0.1, port 110
[02:22:48] S: +OK POP3 POPFile (v0.20.1) server ready

[02:24:21] S: !!! Socket error: #10054 (0x2746)

The socket error appeared 585 times while there were only 580 mails.
After fetching nothing TB said 580 mails, 580 new.

The POPFile log does not say ANYTHING about this session..?!

What I also found confusing was that tb said Retrieiving (sic!) message
header #1 (1/580) for quite a while, though I did not invoke the
dispatcher and have no selective download filters.

On the next Get new mail it downloaded these 580 messages again.

Posted this on TBBETA (mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]), but
no answer. It was with tb 2.04.2..

Yes, but maybe it is related to the new account I'm using because I
shut down the old email address for an old SpamCop reporting account.

I reported 2 spam email this morning. The first did not give me an
option to click on the button to report because the email had been
previously reported. This has never happened on the old account so it
could be related to the new account, or as you suggest new behavior.

Well, as my internet provider is filtering spam very hard (well, in my

only get from time to time mail) there BayesIT was finding 4 spam
mails and missed 1. When this happens you have to mark the mail as
Junk (right click on the mail -- Specials -- Mark as Junk). Then the
mail automatically is moved to the Junk Folder and BayesIT is
learning that this mail was junk to increase the hit rate.

Hello Peter,

Yes, indeed. It seems that it is now sufficient to click the report ID
to be accepted for reporting this spam. So you don't have to log in if
there is only one spam to report. If you want to report several spams,
as I usually have to, it is more convenient to log in with the top
right input windows. After that it goes as usual.

That's exactly the behaviour I have seen. I only report spam one or two
times each day so I have to login, and the login is different.
Previously I would get the standar login popup and all I had to do was
to click OK.

Ok I now see what you are saying. I still feel there is inconsistency

insight as to what No view mode should be used?

Don't get me wrong because I think View Modes are GREAT, however I do
feel it is this inconsistency which make them difficult and confusing to
learn.

How could you have a folder specific No view mode if you had a View
Mode previously selected?

So a proposed hierarchy could be to inherent the No view mode of the
parent, and if none for the parent to default to the account-wide No
view mode.

Which raises the question: Where are account-wide No view mode
defined?

Just thinking out loud, and excuse me if I'm all wet.

reply chain, so a top post template shouldn't include a cut mark. Of
course, cut marks should always be used. A dichotomy, no? Ergo, top
posting is inherently incorrect. QED. (scnr). I certainly do use top
posting in my private technical mail, but never for conversation nor
for list traffic.

2004-02-26 Thread MAU
Hello Paul,

to be honest, I don't know how to do that. I can't remember doing
anything except using the filters to get me to the web page! I can't
even remember where the filter puts the old SPAM emails!

Well, I only use the first filter, the manual one. It submits the
message to Spamcop and also moves it to my Sent to Spamcop folder.

Then I have added a second filter that just received the Spamcop
responses to my Spamcop responses. This folder is the one I look at
once ar twice a day and, if there are any messages, select one of them
and click on the link, etc., etc.

Yes, indeed. It seems that it is now sufficient to click the report ID

there is only one spam to report. If you want to report several spams,
as I usually have to, it is more convenient to log in with the top

IMAP message counts

2004-02-26 Thread Dave Gorman
Hi TBUDLers,

I believe this has been brought up before, but the IMAP message
counts are just weird. For instance, my Inbox message count is
listed as 19 6. 6 is the actual number of messages in the
inbox. I don't know where the 19 is coming from -- maybe the
number of messages that used to be there? At any rate, why
doesn't it just say 6? Eventually it turns into just 6, but
I don't know why I should have to wait for an accurate message
count?

Hello Greg,

I don't get to hung up on past tense and present tense. I thought you
meant what was actually in the UI. Maybe I may have made a slight
grammatically error, but my point is I think it is a BUG.

Well, as you know, English is not my mother language and I thought the
idea that Use by =/= Used by would be clearly understood.

No, I don't thing it is a bug, I think it is WAD. When you create a new
View Mode you can open the Use by.. dialog to select the folder that
will USE the just created view. However, when you open the dialog for an
already existing view, I agree with you, and that was my wish for an
additional feature, the dialog should show as selected (ticked) the
folders that are already using (view is being USED by) the selected
view.

You should see folders selected for the view mode your looking at under
the options | preferences that you have set from the main window.

Right, agree. And same thing when you right click on a folder and select
Copy column settings to BTW, for sake of coherency I think this
option should be called Copy view mode to..., or even better Assign
view mode to..., because it is what the option does. It is not just the
column settings (columns displayed and widths) that get copied.

DG I'm assuming then that it was supposed to go into your Michael
DG folder? Can you paste your Michael Randy filters into a reply to
DG this email? Maybe that could shed some light on the problem.

I thought this question had led me to the solution to the problem,
because when I pasted the filters in my initial reply I noticed that
I'd inadvertently put a space at the beginning of the name of my
Georgetown folder. All of these other folders (michael's, randy's,
eddie's, etc) were nested within this folder, and I thought that
perhaps the filters couldn't handle the space. However, I've now fixed
that.

I also noticed when I pasted the filters that the email address on
which I'm filtering is prefaced with two 0's, so that
[EMAIL PROTECTED] becomes [EMAIL PROTECTED]. I assume from looking
at other folders that the 00 is a code to indicate which field the
text should be in.

I've simplified further to try to isolate the problem. I now have only
one Georgetown filter activated -- one for Eddie. When I filter the
Known folder the program moves 218 messages into Eddie's folder. 118
of them are from Eddie. It appears that all of the others have Eddie's
address in one of the recipient fields.

Here it is:

Re: IMAP filtering problem

2004-02-26 Thread John Rakestraw
Hi Allie,

Thanks for the reply.

AM Where string matching and filter order is concerned, I've been
AM having no problems here when using read filters. I've been using
AM IMAP for some time now.

I've seen that you and others have been using it. And the fact that
I've not seen anyone else describing what I'm seeing here leads me to
think there must be a problem with the way I'm setting it up. But I
have absolutely no clue what that problem might be.

snip

AM Check for an x-sender header for those messages and see.

AM Usually there's an explanation for this.

Here are headers from a message that was sorted incorrectly into the
randy folder. The only changes are that I've replaced the email
addresses and user IDs with text descriptions and removed IPs of
particular workstations:

***paste starts here

The message was from Michael to Randy, Susannah, and me -- but it was
sorted into my Randy folder. (I'm having all of my email forwarded
from the IMAP server to another server where I collect it via POP in
another account, and the POP account filtered it correctly into the
michael folder in that account.)

JR One final bit of information -- the order of the filters seems
JR not to have an effect on the sort. E.g., there are messages from
JR barbara to eddie and me sorted into the eddie folder even though
JR the barbara filter is placed above the eddie filter.

AM Ordering of filters works as expected here.

Yes, but the filtering itself doesn't. I'd like the message in my
barbara folder, not my eddie folder.
