Emne: Desktop To Laptop And Back Again

Hello Group,
I was hoping that there was a simple answer to this.
I do most of my work at home on my desktop computer, then I need
to move all the TheBat! information to the laptop, when I am on
the road, then when I get back to the desktop when I get home.
I am hoping to do this with a very painless operation.

I have been using Barca for nearly two years and the only thing I miss is the

Highly recommended.

In that case I'd go back to a previous, more stable version.

MH Firebird can import messages from: Communicator 4.x, Eudora,
MH Outlook and Outlook Express,
TB can export to *.eml and you can drag those to OE (Find their

From there Firebird should be able to import them.
MH and address books from: Eudora, Outlook, Outlook Express and text
MH files such as LDIF, .tab, .csv, and .txt.
TB can export to LDIF, that would be best...

Thanks - I converted the address books and got most of the information
over.

I have removed OE from my setup so I gave it a try to back in the
versions and had to go all the way back to 2.02.03 before the violations
stopped. The was a complete reinstall, so I tried for the heck of it to
install beta 50 and was back at the violations again.

Fixed that, but don't know why I am the only one with this type of
problem. Well, the new version should be out soon.

Re: Purchased the Bat!

2003-10-26 Thread Mogens Holst
Hello Anthony,

Sunday, October 26, 2003, 13:30, you wrote:

AGA After two days of trying it out, I decided to purchase The Bat! The Bat
AGA will replace Outlook Express as my primary e-mail client.

AGA The reasons why I bought it:

AGA 1. Spam relief

AGA The ability to set filters that look at message headers has _vastly_
AGA improved my filtering of spam. Almost all the spam I receive has a
AGA Content-type of multipart/alternative or text/html, whereas almost all the
AGA legitimate e-mail I receive has a content-type of plain text, or
AGA something else. By filtering on this one field, I manage to separate
AGA spam from real e-mail with at least 95% accuracy. On Outlook Express,
AGA even with several filters (on keywords, message size, and so on), only
AGA about 20% of spam was correctly identified.

AGA I still read the headers of spam and delete it by hand, but having it
AGA correctly sorted speeds this up considerably, since legit e-mail and
AGA spam are less likely to be mixed together.

 snip-

AGA 2. Too many bugs

AGA The product crashed at least three dozen times while I was trying to
AGA tidy up folders imported from OE. On several occasions, it locked the
AGA current window, and killing the Bat process did not release the
AGA window--I had to log off and log on again. These bugs seemed limited to
AGA that clean-up activity, but if I start getting bugs in everyday use of
AGA the product, it's going to go right out the window. There is no excuse
AGA for _any_ bugs in a commercial product.

-snip-

AGA 3. Sparse documentation

AGA I'm not one to depend a great deal on documentation, but the online help
AGA for The Bat is among the sparsest I've ever seen, and it's a complex
AGA product. I can usually figure out things on my own, but some things
AGA just have to be documented, and from what I've seen, they often are not.
AGA This isn't a blocking issue for me, since there are other ways to find
AGA out how to do things (such as this mailing list), but it slows adoption
AGA of the product.

Filtering:
Have you considered another filtering method such as the BayestIt! plugin that you can
find here:

http://klirik.narod.ru/usefuls/bayesiteng.htm

I have used it for a couple of weeks and find it very easy to set up and it is
amazingly effective. It is a relief not to have to write and re-write filtering rules
to keeps up with the bad guys.

Bugs:
That is highly unusual, and this is generally not even an issue even on the betas. I
have used TheBat! for years and it has never crashed on me and I have never lost as
much as a single message. Maybe you should set the account properties to compress all
folders at exit?

Documentation:
The help-file is extensive, but it is not always logical where the information is
hidden. Have you found the menu navigator button on the title bar to the left of the
minimize button? That can help you to find what you are looking for. Another place for
help is the forum on RitLabs website.

ACM Though I have my dislikes for ZAP, a freezing XP system is unlikely

ACM takes something more fundamental to interfere with XP's stability in

ACM If XP is freezing, I don't think this has anything to do with TB!.

You are probably right and it could just be a coincidence. But I
dismantled ZAP 2 months ago and my problems disappeared - and they

XP is really stable now. I installed it in January and I have never

Can't send mail - but receiving OK

1999-11-23 Thread Mogens Holst

I have since Nov 17 been unable to send mail with The Bat! I have
discussed it with my ISP, we have checked all settings and have run out
of ideas.

I can receive all right, and it does not matter if the connection is
open or not when I request a "send". It does not matter if it is
a combined send/receive or just a send mail alone. The "send" is never
executed and returns the same message each and every time "Could not
connect to the server"

I have removed and reinstalled TheBat! - same deal.

My ISP's supreme tech supporter finally suggested to download Becky
(buh!) and surprise, surprise - no problems.

Any ideas?

Try downloading it from a Tucow software library. I have the same
problem with files downloaded, from RIT so I always go to

WH Are you sure, the messages are not "parked"? Or saved?

WH Werner Hintze

Yes. But the program has returned to normal after a reboot.

Re[2]: Re-indexing

1999-11-03 Thread Mogens Holst

Hi Marck,

Wednesday, November 03, 1999, 2:30:45 PM, you wrote:

MDP Well, I have near 37000 messages spread over 160+ folders and have
MDP only ever had problems like those you describe when I have "messed
MDP about" with the folder structure in both TB and Windows Explorer in a
MDP less than clearly thought out manner (ahem) :-).

You are ten times as bad as I am! In this instance, however, I have
not been fooling around. I did a clean install of Win98SE. Office
2000 and most of my other regular programs on the 25th of October, and
have for all practical purposes had a stable system with the exception
of the "bad" folders that had to be "fixed"

MDP I have no suggestions as to why you would be experiencing the need to
MDP repair folders on a regular basis, although it's not entirely clear
MDP what you mean by "repair".

I guess that the term is having a "broken message base file" that can
be repaired by running the message base doctor?

MH It is not too difficult to repair, but it is a pain in you know
MH where, and if it really is a built-in weakness (feature?), why not
MH make the reinexing much easier?

MDP It may be more useful, in the short term, to establish why you are in
MDP the position of having to repair and re-index folders on a regular
MDP basis. Also, I believe that the current version of TB will
MDP automatically re-index a folder if the index file is not present.
MDP There is no interface to remove a current index to allow such a
MDP rebuild to occur, so perhaps your suggestion is a good one.

I don't understand it either, but since no other program misbehaves
and I have not been changing folder structures or other things, I
assumed (yes, I know what that means BG) that it was a Bat! problem.

Question: how would I re-index a folder that shows 0 messages?

I know that Pegasus (buh..) has the ability to re-index from within the
program, and I think that Mr.Kiselev previously has suggested that it
would be nice if the Bat had a similar facility.

MDP OTOH, would folder purge / compress not result in a re-index? Or does
MDP TB use the current index to determine where to purge /compress?

It sounds right to me, be mayby there is a difference between
re-indexing and re-building an index, and what we/I really have been
talking about is "re-building."

 Mogensmailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re-indexing

1999-11-02 Thread Mogens Holst

I have returned to The Bat! and like it enough this time around to have
purchased the edu licence :-)

However, I have noticed during the past 4 days, that I have had to
repair 4 different folders. I had a similar problem when I first
tried The Bat!, but nothing like this. I should add, that my system
now is so different from my original system, both harware- and
software-wise, that I don't think the problem is my setup.

It is not too difficult to repair, but it is a pain in you know where,
and if it really is a built-in weakness (feature?), why not make the
reinexing much easier?
