Scheduler - programs won't start?

2003-09-06 Thread Jan-Arild Løkstad
Hello all,

I've been playing with V2 for a couple of days on my test machine
(running Win98 4.10.1998), but can't for the life of me figure out how
to use the scheduler to start a program. I've followed instructions in
the help file to the letter, but programs just won't start; nothing
happens. Other tasks (i.e send/check mail) are performed without any
problems.

Maybe it is a Win98 issue? Haven't tried V2 on WinXP (yet)

Any suggestions?

I think RITLabs would do well to design a nice Newsreader that can
take advantage of TB's inherent qualities such as filtering and her
 very robust Editor.

TB's editor is the current state of the art. There is simply nothing
better out there, and I think I've tried everything under the sun.
Whatever RITLabs do, I really hope they don't mess up the editor.

And, are you saying that TB! is a 'she'? If so, that explains why
I'm head over ears in love with this baby.

Yes it does work. It installs correctly, as nearly as can be seen.

Did you check the system before this second try. At least a scandisk
 would be a good idea.

No, I didn't check the system. Just restored it from the backup,
which takes just about 6-7 minutes, and made another attempt to
upgrade. The system froze upon installation again (at the splash
  screen).

Better yet, go get a free utility called InCtrl, which could trace
every changes made to your system between two events, including
files added/deleted/changes, and registry changes. I use it to have
a complete record of everything new software does to my system. So
if something screws up, I'll have a better clue. It also helps you
uninstall software. Most (I'm tempted to say all) of them don't
 uninstall themselves cleanly.

Sounds to be a good idea. I will try to get this utility.

It never happens here, so I've no idea. As you're using Win98, I
 don't feel terribly surprised.

The return of the upgrade problem

2001-03-18 Thread Jan-Arild Løkstad

Hello All,

When I upgraded from 1.48f to 1.51 less than a week ago, I lived
through the "horrors" of the upgrade problem again. Once the TB!

  Ctrl-Alt-Delete didn't help.

I always create a backup with Drive Image prior to all changes I

  Why does this problem return?

Hello tracer,

It sure does tracer. I guess I have to put the blame on my bad command
of English. What I _think_ I say, is not necessarily always what I
_mean_ to say. Sorry about that. I think you guys better enter for a
course in Norwegian :)

You position the cursor, then below that the quote. if you put
quotes first, it likely will produce the quote and then py putting
the cursor, move everything before the cursor position up,

Exactly, and that's what happens. I can place the cursor wherever I
want in the message, but (for some of us), placing the %Cursor macro
_after_ the %Quotes macro has an annoying side effect (the by now well
known "disappearing text- and scrollbar problem"), so if the only
alternatives I have are:

  1. Before the quotes.
  2. Not including it.

then the %Cursor macro is of little (if any) practical use for me. I
fail to see how to benefit from using it in my reply templates at all,
because, by not including it, TB! defaults to the upper left corner.
No big difference from placing the cursor before the quotes IMO.

Anyway, leaving out the %Cursor macro cured this problem for me,
however, this doesn't explain why I have a similar problem in NTP. My
first thought was that there could be some sort of connection here.

My original reply template looked like this:

I changed it to look like this:

As you will see, the only difference between the two is that I have
removed the %Cursor-macro in the latter -and you know what? The
problem is gone. Completely. The only drawback, by removing the
%Cursor-macro is that the cursor is placed in the upper left corner of
the screen when replying, but I do always edit the original message
before I start typing anyway so...

In essence, what I found is that the scroll bars are calculated on
the amount of text in the message. Have you noticed if you go to

It doesn't seem to make any difference whether the original message
contains 10 or 500 lines of text. The same thing happens every time -
i.e all the text (except from the last 4-5 lines), and the scrollbar
disappear. Always.

I can reproduce the lack of scroll bar problem at will. Create a
new message (or a reply, it doesn't matter). Type a couple of
lines, enough so it all fits in one screen with no scrolling. Now
use your keyboard keys (or scroll wheel mouse) to move down a few
lines until your text is off screen. Notice how the scroll bars do
not appear. This also happens with the horizontal scroll bar.

You are dead right. I haven't noticed this before.

In your Note Tab Pro program, do you have a free caret interface
active? I think this may be the source of the trouble.

With regard to the free caret interface, I wish I could say yes
because this is one of the things I love the most about TB! -but no,
NTP doesn't support it. What I can say for certain is, that in NTP,
this _only_ occur when pasting text from the clipboard, and also,
_only_ when pasting more text than fits into one screen.

BTW. In which version of TB! did this start to occur? I have used it
since 1.39 but I can't remember seeing this prior to my last upgrade
to 1.45.but yes, I am an old and absent-minded kind of person, so
I might very well be wrong :)

Strange things when replying

2000-08-14 Thread Jan-Arild Løkstad

Hello All,

Pressing the "Reply"-button opens up the "Message Editor Window" with
the quote prefix preceding each lineas if you didn't know :) The
strange thing is that only the last 4-5 lines of the message to which
I am replying is visible in the editor. The rest of the original
message, and also the scrollbar!, has disappeared, and the only way to
get both back into view again is to press the "Page Up"-key on the
keyboard.

This happens _every time_ I reply to a message. Anyone who have
experienced anything similar?

Printing of quoted text in bold?

Hello all,

Several people, on some of the mailing lists I'm on, have the "nasty
habit" of inserting a space in front of the quote character. The
result of this is that the text doesn't print in bold as I have chosen

options doesn't help me much :)

Example:

This line is printed in bold, while...

Before purchasing TB! I used Forté Agent for both mail and news, and

.htx instead of .html?

2000-04-12 Thread Jan-Arild Løkstad

Hello all,

When I receive a HTML message, the HTML part has a .htx file extension
instead of .html I do not have any problems viewing the mails, but I
just wonder why the .htx extension is used instead of .html

In Win98's file associations, .htx is described as "Internet Database
Connector HTML Template", and is associated with Microsoft FrontPage.

Not a big deal, but is there a way to solve this? -preferably without
deleting the .htx association :)

Re[2]: How to open attached files with .EML file extensions?

2000-03-14 Thread Jan-Arild Løkstad

Hello Tony,

Tuesday, March 14, 2000, 2:22:47 PM, you wrote:

I do have here an attachment that has been sent to me with a .ged
extension that I can't open if anyone knows what program that's
 associated with?

That must be a GEDCOM-file.

All genealogy programs have their own ways of storing/organizing data.
GEDCOM is an attempt to standardize transport of genealogy data between
different programs, and is (as far as I know), the only common format
for this purpose today.

You will ned a program like "Family Tree Maker" or "Brothers Keeper"
to open ged-files.

Numbers and square brackets in subject?

2000-03-10 Thread Jan-Arild Løkstad

Hello all,

I have chosen to "View threads by subject", and a thread may look like
this:

Text
Re: Text
Re[2]: Text
Re: Text
Re[2]: Text
Re[3]: Text

What does the numbers in square brackets mean?

Maybe I am stupid, but I just can't figure this out. Anyone who have
some time to spare to explain this for a TB-novice?

TIA

Problem with printing

2000-02-26 Thread Jan-Arild Løkstad

Hello all,

If I click the "Print"-button on the toolbar, nothing happens.
Printing by choosing "Print" on the "Message"-menu works just fine.

Anyone who have any ideas about what may cause this?

Printer: Panasonic KX-P6300

TIA
