Once in a while when reading email, several icons (primarily those that
effect operation on the messages, such as Delete, the Replies, and the
Forwards) will suddenly gray out and I lose access to those features. If
I switch to another folder and then back, the icons un-gray and work fine.

click on address book would pop up properties and I
could add/change things. Not anymore.
