Sorry Leif but this will not work. Cause 3 * 5 = 15.

True - it would be impossible to set up a scheme with
periodic checking where accounts never check at the same
time.

At any rate, aliasing is the better solution for all but
 the extreme purposes.

I do the same - several aliases and one account. The only
thing I don't like is when I'm not at my machine and I check
via the web - my mailbox has hundreds of messages and it's
hard to see what's important.

I suppose the ideal solution would be to have two boxes -
one for personal mail and one for groups and newsletters and
such.

It's nice only having to worry about one account, but
unfortunately, not everyone can do this :/

Use scripts (or different time periods) to check only 3 accounts at a
time! This should be a request for the wish list for an option to
check sequentially OR concurrently.

My last email client offered a global choice for concurrent or
sequential. A better approach is to choose at the account level.

That way, as TB goes through the accounts, concurrent accounts would
be added and sequential would be queued.

One, for each account I would set the check messages every n minutes
to differing times. So one set of four mail accounts to check every 3
minutes, another set every 5 minutes, 7, 11, 13, 17.

Since those are all prime numbers, there shouldn't be any overlap in
times unless an account from a previous set doesn't finish before the
next set starts.

Once you have it set, exit TB, then restart TB. I'm just guessing at
this, but I think it will work.

Now, another thing to think about is aliasing 24 e-mail addresses to a
single e-mail account. For instance, with my domain PCWize.com I have
one mailbox account, but I have 50 or so e-mail addresses which point
to that account. Then in TB, I just filter based on the Recipient, and
it goes to whatever folder.

i.e. editor at pcwize is the address I used for my newsletter
for people to write to me at, and it goes to the same account as my
tb at pcwize addresses, but they get filtered to different
folders, because they are for different things. Unless you have a
serious reason for having to have 24 separate mailboxes, aliasing is
the way to go.

Sorry Leif but this will not work.
Cause 3 * 5 = 15. So every 15 minutes TB will then query 8 Accounts.

I think this should be a short-term solution. And, that a more
permanent solution be implemented in the next version of TB (1.63). In
example, have an option so that the check messages is done
sequentially. This is probably a scenario that either wasn't thought
of at design time and/or nobody reported before.

Problem connecting to multiple email accounts on the same server

2003-06-20 Thread choppystride
Hello,

My email provider provides an unlimted number of email boxes. I
currently need to setup 24 for myself. I am having trouble retrieving
mail from all my accounts at once (i.e. by using the Tools - Check
Mail for All command). The problem seems to be caused by the fact
that my email provider only allows 4 simultaneous connection to their
email server from the same IP. I've tested this out by using the
/CHECK command in scripts and can produce this problem consistently
when I check more than 4 accounts at a time. What happens during
these tests are that, the first 4 accounts will connect and retrieve
all mails successfully. However, subsequent accounts would seem to
get stuck, causing the Connection Center to hang indefinitely. I
would then need to terminate the Connection Center by pressing the
abort button. Note that this error occurs whether I am connecting to
an IMAP or a POP3 server. I've also tried using multiple /CHECK
commands in my script by specifying 4 accounts at a time but it did not
make any difference. Currently, the only thing I can do is check each
account separately via mouseclicks or the F2 hotkey. Needless to say,
this is very inconvenient considering the number of accounts that I
have.

Interestingly, I've tried this with the Pegasus email client (v4.11)
and had no problems. Not sure why this is the case. Perhaps it
connects to and then disconnects from the server each time an account
is checked?

Any suggestions to overcome this problem will be greatly appreciated.

BTW, my email providing uses qmail on Linux.

Are you saying that Ritlabs is aware of this problem and that a
 solution is near completion?

Unfortunately, I'm not.

I was browsing thru their bugtrap and
saw a bug titled Mail fetching (POP3) hangs dated Jan 22. I wonder
if this is the same one that I'm experiencing. Perhaps I should
 report mine?

Yes you should submit your bug report. They could probably decide if
it is related or not.

DR example, have an option so that the check messages is done
DR sequentially. This is probably a scenario that either wasn't thought
DR of at design time and/or nobody reported before.

As I've said before, I've tried Pegasus which doesn't have this bug
b/c it seems to be checking the accounts sequentially. However, it
also seems to be very slow, much slower than TB when I tested them out
by having them check only 4 accounts (the limit imposed by my email
provider). So perhaps we should be allowed to specify how many
accounts to check at a time to minimize the possible performance loss.
But then of course my tests were not exactly precise scientific
experiments. And also, I'm assuming here that this 4-at-a-time
limit is the source of the problem, which may or may not be.

This could be a good solution to try. When posting your bug report,
make sure to mention all of this, it might give Ritlabs some ideas on
how to tackle the problem.
