What kind of locking is meant exactly? Message bases cannot be damaged

Do you lock them? I mean when TB writes to files that can be on a
network server and may be access by workstations at the same time? My
last programming experience with this is 10 years old and I don't
experience which Novell version that was, but I had to make my
application lock the file, write to it, and release it.

There was no automatic locking and when two workstations accessed a
file at the same time, at least one for writing, data damage was
caused.

Do you mean some other one?

If you are saying above that TB locks a database before writing into
it, then this problem doesn't exist (any more?).

No, I mean exactly what you've said: locking message base files when
writing to them. Sorry, I just read some messages by Thomas and others
in TBUDL archives (March 2003) saying TB! does _not_ lock files at
all. I'm glad that's turned out to be wrong. Thank you Stefan.

Will this cause problems during the upgrade?

I don't think I had to change a single thing when I
upgraded (except the registration). I don't use a lot of
templates and most of my filtering is pretty basic, but
everything worked just fine after the upgrade. (I did
rearrange all my folders and update my filters at that

Folders stay. Filters are unchanged. Some templates may need

Version 2

2003-12-19 Thread Wayne Black
Friday, December 19, 2003 at 8:08 AM (Pacific Time)

Hello Bat Users,

Well, I held off as long as I could before upgrading to version 2. I
used 1.62r a long time with no problems. Then I seen where I could
upgrade for only $14.00 until Jan, 10th because of the Christmas
specials. I just couldn't pass it up. I am really glad I did! The new
folder maintenance centre is very well done. I backed 1.62r up first
in case I had problems. Then I just installed 2.02.3 over the top of
1.62r, I wasn't sure you could do that but I had my back up so it
didn't mater. To my surprise, everything works fine so far. Even my
templates are working, and I thought I read something where they had to
be changed for version 2.

Anyway, I have always been very conservative when it comes to
upgrading software. I don't do it just because but I can tell you
that now is the time especially with the Christmas discounts. I am
still in the early stages of using version 2 but have not, yet anyway,
experienced any of the problems that I have seen others have on the
list. I just wanted to say how pleased I am with version 2. Everyone
have a Merry Christmas!

It's not the templates per se, it's related to the template macros.
There's a bit of information in TB!'s help, in regards to some syntax
changes. And, apparently some macros behavior changed. But I'm not
able to comment, since the only thing that I do remember is that I
didn't use any of the affected macros.

It depends on how complex your templates are. Most templates should

Version 2 Observation

2003-10-19 Thread Barry Higginbottom
Dear TB Users

OK, my curiosity got the better of me and I've upgraded to
 version 2!

I'd stuck with 1.62 because of the apparent folder problems with
1.63 on, but I thought that would have been fixed by now. :(

Two days in and TB has just lost half my folders and screwed my
 Inbox!

It must have been good fortune, but I've managed to recover. With
my Inbox I deleted the .tbi file and used the maintenance utility
to recover, before deleting the .tbi file the maintenance utility
failed to recover my Inbox every time I tried.

I recovered the lost folders by recreating with the same name and
ignoring TB's complaints that the folder already existed.

 Is TB2 really this flaky?

The antispam controls you see in v2 require a plug-in. One is currently
available and it's called Bayesit.
I know of TWO Bat installations that, once Bayesit was installed, caused TB
to no longer start! (The fix was to rename/remove the c:\bayesit
directory/folder.)

I gather from many other messages I've seen that this plugin must be
working for quite a number of users though.

PS the subject of this thread has now become something other than the
originally intended question about v2 features. At what point does one

Whenever you think it appropriate. I read all messages so I at times,
inadvertently ignore the subject. So if we continue to discuss the
antispam plugin support then we'd need to change the subject.

Receiving Registration Code for Version 2

2003-09-07 Thread Kim
Hi all,

Good to be back on the list. :)

I upgraded to version 2 of The Bat today. I was wondering, on average,
how long did it take for you to receive your new registration code?
When I first ordered The Bat (version 1.x), the registration code
didn't arrive until about four hours after I registered, however, in
looking at the new Bat forums today, I noticed that someone mentioned
that they received their registration code about three minutes after
registering. I did receive a receipt right after registration, but
this isn't the same as the mail with the registration code. So, how
long did it take you all to get your new upgrade code after
registration? Thanks!

For prerelease software, this is unpredictable. Some of us may have

release though the problems should be much less.

Try it at your own risk. I'd be irresponsible for saying otherwise.
Let's just say that I've personally been using all the betas and haven't
lost any mail. I haven't had any showstopping experiences either. Many
others will surely confess a similar experience. It's up to you to take

Note that I've been using only POP3 accounts and haven't been using the
new IMAP support. If you're looking for problem free usage, then I'd
definitely wait for the full release version before trying IMAP.

AJ 3) Is the upgrade straightforward?

For POP accounts, yes.

If you're using IMAP accounts, you'll have to first convert them to POP
before upgrading. You'll then have to create new IMAP accounts and then
transfer your mail over to the new IMAP accounts.

which was 0:10 a.m. in Bratislava --

AJ 1) Is it ready for prime time? ie. stable?

I have had no time to participate in Beta cycles after 1.61. However,
when version 2.0 Final came out earlier this evening, the temptation
was too much, so after backing up all of my 10 accounts with 63000+
messages through the Maintenance Center, I went ahead and upgraded.

AJ 2) If I install it, is my wife going to have trouble using it, after
AJ being used to 1.xx, and not being technically minded?

No trouble at all. Version 2 looks much the same as 1.61 did, despite
the new default set of icons. I do like the new set of icons,
incidentally, unlike many users on the Bat lists. (The icons may
strike you as too gray after you got used to all the yellows in
version 1.xx. Yellow is gone in Version 2.)

AJ 3) Is the upgrade straightforward?

That's the word for it. Everything* has been restored perfectly and
everything is in its place. The upgrade took me about 30 seconds
(excluding the speedy download of Version 2 from
http://www.ritlabs.com/download/the_bat/beta/the_bat.exe ).

* an exception: something that has not worked for me recently, even
when restoring accounts from a CD backup, is the restoration of
Address Book Groups -- only the Main Personal Address Book gets
restored here from a CD backup or after upgrading to Version 2, with
all email addresses from former Groups indiscriminately dumped in it.
So in order not to lose your Groups, simply copy the *.ABD and *.INI
files from your The Bat!\MAIL\ folder to a temporary folder prior to
upgrading. Then, when in Version 2.0, should you find that your Groups
are gone, in the Address Book go to: File -- Load Address Book
Set..., and find your Addrbook.INI file previously copied from your
1.xx TB! version. That will restore the former status quo. As I said,
this is not a Version 2 issue, as I had to do the same thing with
v1.61 when I reformatted my hard-drive a few weeks ago. Incidentally,
the restoration of all mail data, including numerous user-specific
settings, via the Maintenance Centre from a single *.tbk file of about
120 MB size, worked like a charm.

Deborah W asks:

DW What are the highlights of v2?

After reading all the sceptical opinions about v2 betas on the TBBETA
list, I doubted whether it would be necessary for me to upgrade. The
big improvement in v2 is supposed to be full working IMAP, which I
don't use.

However, the few hours that I've been using version 2 have convinced
me that v2 is worth paying the price for upgrade. There are lots of
cosmetic improvements and bug-fixes in version 2 compared to 1.61 that
I wouldn't want to live without any longer. Such as,

oattachments to messages can be displayed at the bottom of the
preview pane, as small icons (rather than on the left as huge
 icons)

ofinally, if you have more than one message open for editing,
your customized keyboard shortcuts work in all open editor
windows instead of in only the one that was opened first

othe content of attached *.txt, *.att, and most importantly,
*.msg files gets displayed directly in the preview pane after you
press CTRL+TAB, so you no longer need to open separate windows to
view the content of those attachments.

onew centralized Preferences dialog, with new options thrown in

 onew Folder Maintenance center

oenhanced Search, it seems (though I can't seem to be able to find
the 1.xx option to search in All Accounts or only in Current Account)

onew Scheduler -- haven't tested it yet

oif you decide to view Kludges in v2's Preview Window, Word-Wrap
is finally applied to them (as in TB! 1.5x, later lost in 1.6x, now
 restored)

oin v2 you can use Message Header Fields data directly in your
reply templates via new (and customizable) Message Header macros

ogenerally speaking, version 2 feels very stable, is super-fast
and so, a joy to work with.

Concerning Message Header fields data, could anyone help with the
following:

Is it possible to get to the message header pane via the keyboard
only, without clicking with the mouse? It is often useful to copy data
from the message header, but having to use the mouse for accessing the
message header pane above the preview pane is time-consuming. Thank you.

Hello Joseph,

The file structure is different, and you would not be able to use the
1.62 program with files that were adapted by the 2.0 program.

Not totally correct for Pop accounts. The folder structure has changed.
I have specifically asked this question to Stefan in the past with
regard to 1.62 vs 1.63. V2 is basically 1.63 with fixes and some new
updates. IIRC the only problem is with the folder structure getting out
of sync, otherwise you can run 1.62 1.63 on the same mail base which I
believe should apply to v2. If you add a new folder in one version, then
you will have to do manually in the other version.

Again the above only applies to Pop accounts. Don't ask me about IMAP
because I don't really use IMAP accounts.

plug-ins. How to install and use them in The Bat you can learn in the

The Bat! offers an interface for installing anti-spam plug-ins. Each
message you receive has score from 0 to 100 if it spam or not, and if
points are above minimum that you set in preferences it is moved a
Junk Mails Folder. To determine a message as Junk or not in The Bat!
you can use Mark As Junk and Mar as NOT Junk oprions from Specials
sub-menu.

In order to use Anti spam support firstly you have to install
anti-spam plug-in with self learning facilities. To install a plug-in,
open Preferences dialog from the Options | Preferences menu and in the
preferences tree click at Anti-spam leaf.

...and so it goes on.

Hello MikeD,

I use a beautiful little peice of software (for Bayesian Spam
filtering) that works well with TB (or any mail client) its called K9.
You can get it from www.keir.net/k9.html oh yeah... its free :-)

The Sept-2003 Australian PCUser magazine compared 9 anti-spam software
products. Of the ones that were not list-based, it scored mid-field
with false-negatives at 17% (range was 15% - 20%) and it scored best
of all on false-positives at 0.1% (range was 0.1% to 4.7%).

Enjoy... ;-)

A upgraded key some 15 hours after registering. How long did it take
A for you guys?

 A few minutes (10 or 15).

GG After my online registration, they're using The Element 5 site now for that,
GG I got in a 'thank you' message the note:
GG The publisher will send the license key by e-mail within 48 hours.
GG That would make 15 hours even rather fast. :-)

I realize this, but in light of no one else having a problem with
latency, I threw up a red flag. I think they'd forgotten about me --
because as soon as I emailed Cifnet, I got my reg code.

Same here. I've played with v2 a bit now, as you say, there are some
nice features. I was expecting the html editor to be useful, because I
do occasionally want to send html mail, but tbh I'm disappointed with
it. If you highlight text in order to change, for example, the font
size, you have to highlight it twice - because as soon as you change one
thing, you lose the highlight. And it doesn't appear to be possible to
paste html into the editor - I get an error message when I try that. I
suspect Ritlabs introduced the html editor in order to appeal to a wider
audience, but I don't think this one's going to do it.

On the bright side, the installation, as you say, was a dream - fast
simple. But while I appreciate that other features are to be added as
time goes on, at the minute I'm probably going to stick with the old
version, because I can't justify paying for new features I don't need
our household income is zero :-/

Excellent! However, some questions.

1) Is it ready for prime time? ie. stable?

2) If I install it, is my wife going to have trouble using it, after
being used to 1.xx, and not being technically minded?

3) Is the upgrade straightforward?
