Thanks for pointing me to the TLS error, I should've spotted that.  The
certificate pointed to by olcTLSCertificateFile had had its permissions
changed so that it was unreadable by slapd; not sure how. I reset the
permissions, and now slapd starts normally.

This is valid only when using keyboard we do not want the item to appear
selected if we do not have a keyboard.

I think the same idea apply to focused buttons and others items, but the
design team probably has a best understand about that.

UX Fix:
We currently have a focus state spec as well as visuals as part of the SDK
work we are undertaking. This addresses the issue stated and is currently being
implemented. Keep your eyes peeled :)

On my beefy laptop, when opening a new tab, the UrlGridView for the list
of top sites in the new tab view takes ~250ms to instantiate, of which
almost half the time (115ms) is for instantiating the Loader that
contains one Favicon.

After moving away the favicons cache folder, instantiating the favicons
is almost instantaneous (they are being re-downloaded on a different
thread), and instantiating the UrlGridView is down to 170ms, which is
still expensive, but better.

I instrumented the favicon fetcher code, and the culprit seems to be the
first icon being downloaded (usually because the favicon doesn’t
actually exist, but we’re not tracking that, so we try to download it
anyway because it hasn’t been cached on disk). Specifically, on my
laptop instantiating the first QNetworkAccessManager takes ~100ms. One
QNAM is being instantiated for each favicon that we fetch from the
network, but the subsequent instantiations are free, only the first one
is expensive. This would need some further investigation in Qt itself.

One optimization we could try to apply is to cache an empty file on disk
for non-existent favicons, in order to avoid trying to re-download them
over and over again.

Title:
Creating or switching to a new tab feels slow

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open few tabs with websites
2. Click 'New tab' button

Expected result:
Browser creates new tab and switches to it immediately.

What happens instead:
New tab is created and browser switches to it after about 2-3 seconds. Long
enough to makes me worried if everything is fine with it.

Similar situation is when I have a 'new tab' already opened as a
background tab. When I switch to it from a tab with a webpage, the
action is taking too long.

Bug description:
  Using the server install ISO, it's possible to specify root on LUKS
  and variations thereof - for instance, root on LUKS on MD-RAID, root
  on LVM on LUKS on MD-RAID, and so forth. The installer does the right
  thing and initramfs-tools does everything necessary to support booting
  this sort of thing.

  However, systemd gives a 90-second timeout on restart or shutdown,
  presumably because it cannot dispose of the things beneath root.

  It's wholly unclear to me where the 90-second timeout is specified,
  should I wish to shorten it to reboot without the futile delay, but
  more to the point, there seems to be infrastructure for handling this
  kind of situation that doesn't exist in Ubuntu at present.

  I was pointed at this:

  However, Ubuntu seems not to have anything in its initramfs-tools to
  facilitate "shutdown-initrd" functionality.

  I haven't tested this, but I suspect this problem will exist for folks

  users, which is unfortunate.

  Phone finds speaker and connects (no pin required). Audio is heard
  from the speaker for 1 second, then stops.

  The volume control stills says audio is routed to bluetooth speaker,
  but no sound output.

  Bluetooth cannot then be turned off (button appears to function to
  “off” position , but bluetooth remains active and button returns to
  “on” position after exactly 30 seconds)

  Attempting to switch to flight mode – the button “greys out” for 30
  seconds, then appears as “on”. Wifi is disconnected but mobile network
  connections are still active.

  Switching off the bluetooth speaker has no effect, the phone still
  appears to be connected to it.

  Attempting  to restart does not work – The phone switches off and does
  not restart. Hard reset is required to get the phone to boot again.
  Also if the phone is powered off, it will not restart until a hard
  reset is performed.

  We're interested in supporting network configuration of cloud
  instances including lxc containers via maas/cloud-init yaml format.

  For Containers, the end goal is to do:
  $ lxc init xenial x1
  $ ncpath=/var/lib/cloud/seed/nocloud-net/network-config
  $ sudo tee /var/lib/lxd/containers/x1/rootfs/$ncpath < 
into 'eth0').
   That is implemented by check of 
/sys/devices/virtual/net/eth0/name_assign_type . Value of 4 means renamed.

   c.) systemd.link will not attempt to rename a device that does not have a 
driver.
     To see that run: udevadm test-builtin net_setup_link /sys/class/net/eth0

   d.) on first boot of a cloud instance, the systemd.link files in the
  initramfs are either pristine or from the previous instance.  The
  devices will leave the initramfs either named incorrectly or named
  with standard persistent naming and will have already been renamed.

  To force these systemd.link files to run in spite of 'b' on kvm guests
  or bare metal, we have found that unbind and rebind of the device will
  clear the state and rename would occur.  that can be done as shown in
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cloud-
  init/+bug/1577844/comments/3 but since there is no 'driver' we cannot
  unbind and rebind veth devices.

  To do this right, we need to support:
   1.) renaming on first boot with initramfs and with 'stale' initramfs
   2.) renaming in lxc containers
   3.) user updating whatever files or mechanism is used post first boot.  For 
example, if the user wrote a 25-my-rules.link after first boot, a reboot should 
prefer their provided names to whatever were originally there.
   4.) if cloud-init networking is disabled, the renaming should not occur.

  Qt clients are failing to create an egl context when running on Intel
  Pineview systems under Mir.

  eglCreateContext fails with a EGL_BAD_MATCH error code.

  When it fails, Qt tries to delete & recreate the context, which then

  I'm digging into unity8 performance problems on older generation Intel
  GPUs - specifically i915 Atom GPUs.

  I've tested a simple QML file with a single empty UbuntuShape in it:

  import QtQuick 2.4
  import Ubuntu.Components 1.3

  Rectangle {
  width: 400
  height: 300
  color: "blue"

  UbuntuShape {}
  }

  Running it with INTEL_DEBUG=perf env var set, I get this output:

  i915_program_error: Exceeded max ALU instructions (76 out of 64)
  ENTER FALLBACK 1: Program
  Mapping a busy BO, causing a stall on the GPU.

  which implies that MESA was unable to compile one of the UbuntuShape
  shaders as it created more ALU instructions than the GPU could deal
  with. MESA falls back to CPU rendering as a result.

  The GPU stall message I guess is related to that.

Ouch, on the hardware I have access to to test on, even a single Ubuntu
Shape in a simple QML file has a massive hit on rendering performance.

Title:
  navigation through scopes very slow

Bug description:
  I an using a Meizu MX4 with software version 15.04 (r4). Even though this is 
a powerfull phone moving between scopes is still laggy and slow also some auto 
refresh as you move to them. 
  I would like to suggest that auto refresh takes place in the background so 
all scopes are ready when you flick through them. 
  Also I wonder if a scope selection system would be a good idea so you could 
just direct to the scope you want and not have to scroll through many scopes 
before reaching the one you wish to use. 

  Note, The Today scope is improving slowly and the time for each item
  to show is reducing, but basically its still far too slow to be the
  main scope. If you refresh say the BBC news scope it completes in a 2
  seconds, the today scope still takes 10s (even after fixing the delay
  to show calls and texts). I understand people are working very hard to
  improve this key area.

   Bear with me on this, it's a bit of a voyage.. There is his /thing/ I
  do when creating publicity for a web site, that works fine in Firefox,
  chrome, opera, Vivaldi, on a desktop; works fine in firefox, chrome,
  safari, and dolphin on IOS, and with internet or chrome on android..
  It doesn't work in our browser on he M10 tablet under OTA10.1

  1. Go to e.g. 
  http://www.geograph.org.uk/stamp.php?id=2612549
  (there are nearly 5 million photos, I chose a nice one for you to play with)

  2. Press 'get stamped image'
  you get an instruction to right-click and save as, and a watermarked image to 
do that to. 

  3. Our version of that is long-press, and download.
  so do that.

  what gets downloaded is not the.jpg but appears to be a fragment of
  html, or the url.

  That is /not/ what happens on any other browser on any other
  platform.. Elsewhere I get the.jpg

I just checked the Windows based browsers and in the current
configuration (with the hint) I get things like "geograph-4967963-by-
Richard-Hoare.jpg".

I have looked back at the older ones and found the same sort of thing,
it looked very familiar

On IOS things don't have file names I can see, so I can't help you there
- I will do the job on IOS and attach the result in a minute to find
out.

  It doesn't work in our browser on he M10 tablet under OTA10.1

  1. Go to e.g.

  (there are nearly 5 million photos, I chose a nice one for you to play with)

  2. Press 'get stamped image'
  you get an instruction to right-click and save as, and a watermarked image to 
do that to. 

  3. Our version of that is long-press, and download.
  so do that.

  what gets downloaded is not the.jpg but appears to be a fragment of
  html, or the url.

  That is /not/ what happens on any other browser on any other
  platform.. Elsewhere I get the.jpg

  I'll attach some pictures to show what I mean.

  We have a visual design for the welcome wizard when you first turn on
  the device (see attached design.jpg).  It shows a combo box that is
  hard to achieve with the current toolkit.

  (As an aside, there is no joiner between the drop down button and the
  rest of the widget in design.jpg.  I don't know how to do that with
  the current SDK...  But that's not the point of this bug.)

  My real problem is text color.  By default, I get a kind of grey
  background color and light text.  It's not the easiest to see.  And
  this is the default!  See default.png

  When I set a white background to get closer to the visual design, I
  still get a light text.  Which is also hard to see.  See white.png

  I seem to have no control over the color of the text.  In
  ButtonStyle.qml, I see:

  textColor: ColorUtils.luminance(button.color) <= 0.85 &&
  !(stroke && !pressed) ? "#FF" : "#88"

  Which does not provide much control nor the possibility for a
  particularly dark text color.

  during power tests.  They usually seem to happen together, and might
  be a recurrence of an earlier issue at the end of 2015.

  1.turn on sim pin lock
  2.reboot the device
  3.swipe to dismiss the greeter

  Actual result:
  phone lock screen is displayed

  Expected result:
  sim lock screen should appear before the phone lock screen

  It also happens sometimes on arale without any pattern to reproduce,
  just random on reboot.

  After debugging it seems that this is caused by ofono removing the
  modems in the middle of the unlock process. You can see the difference

Bug description:
  I am unable to change any settings  within network-manager for any
  wired interface (not tried wireless) - if you try to change anything
  (i.e dns servers, ipv6 settings, change from dhcp -> dhcp address
  only) you get an error (and the setting doesn't change)

  i.e - in this example I selected 'require IPV4' and I get

Hmm. Just called "image.jpg" when sent from IOS. I just mailed that
second one to myself from the IOS cameraroll, and it came in an email
with the name IMG_3747.jpg

I have just found a backup directory of images saved from Firefox on
Windows from earlier in the year, and they have names like
"IMG_0910.JPG" so I was wrong about the "geograph-4967963-by-Richard-
Hoare.jpg" format - that seems to have belonged to another method of
downloading, the non-stamped one.

Looks like Firefox was allocated sequential download names in the same
way that IOS has been.

do when creating publicity for a web site, that works fine in Firefox,
chrome, opera, Vivaldi, on a desktop; works fine in firefox, chrome,
safari, and dolphin on IOS, and with internet or chrome on android..
It doesn't work in our browser on he M10 tablet under OTA10.1

1. Go to e.g.
http://www.geograph.org.uk/stamp.php?id=2612549
(there are nearly 5 million photos, I chose a nice one for you to play with)

2. Press 'get stamped image'
you get an instruction to right-click and save as, and a watermarked image to
do that to.

3. Our version of that is long-press, and download.
so do that.

what gets downloaded is not the.jpg but appears to be a fragment of
html, or the url.

That is /not/ what happens on any other browser on any other
platform.. Elsewhere I get the.jpg

I am experiencing this issue on 16.04 LTS when resuming from suspend.
Running `sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager.service` works around the
issue and brings the network back up.

  Directly after boot the network connections are not working. I am
  connected and have an IP address, but I cannot establish a connection
  with any Internet server.

  I have the impression it is related to thee DNS lookup, which waits
  forever for a result.

  Cycling the connection (disconnect->reconnect) seems to fix the
  problem for some time.

  I am reporting this against network-manager, but I am not sure if it is 
directly in network manager or if it is systemd related.
  With 14.10 everything worked perfectly.

  Dash touch scrolling is slower than web browser touch scrolling. But
  obviously it should not be.

  This has been an issue for as long as I remember. Just upgraded mako
  to xenial and it's still there.

  Am I imagining things? Is this simply explained by the web browser
  using a different toolkit? Could it just be a side-effect of bug
  1494795?

Hold on ListView navigation is possibl eONLY if the ListView is
focused. If the focused item is a Header action, the up/down keys will
NOT be captured by the ListView. It is illogical that up/down keys
should be grabbed by the ListView even if it has no focus.

Enter/Return/Space key handling si in a separate MR. Should the Space
key also act as Enter on ListItems? Or only on Buttons?

  Start the UITK gallery, and resize the window to have a single column.

  Now, with TAB you can navigate between the actions in the header, and
  the ListView with that list the different Pages with components. But
  it is not possible to use the arrow keys to select a ListItem, and
  then press ENTER/SPACE to open that page, because pressing the arrow
  (up/down) key automatically triggers the ListItem (onClicked?) and
  opens the Page. So only the first Page (ActionBar) can be opened using
  keyboard navigation when you have only one column.

  UX Fix: 
  In a single column view only the arrow keys for selection should be turned 
off and just move up and down the list, to select enter should be used.

  The primary use of the keyboard switcher is switching languages.  But
  Emoji are used in every language.  They are like symbols, and you
  don't type symbols by switching to a different keyboard.  Rather there
  is a separate button on the keyboard for switching to symbol entering
  mode.

  Having emoji on a separate keyboard means a) monolingual people still
  need to figure out how to use the keyboard switcher and b) bilingual
  people have to deal with three keyboards rather than a simple toggle
  switch (see Bug #1520889).

note that this behaviour is even more noticeable on turbo, seems the Mir
slowness is out of the way there, it takes between two and three seconds
for an app to accept input ... of which one second is a little "hang" of
the animation when flipping it into focus before it sits straight on the
screen, this seems like some blocking code in unity8.

  second before an app takes input again when one switches it from

  sigstopped, not OOM killed here (i.e. no restart involved, just
  sigcont).

  this used to be instant before and gives a weird feeling of
  sluggishness.

App icons are, or will be, also rendered by content-hub in its “Open
With” dialog; by indicator-sound when a player is registered with Mpris;
by url-dispatcher in its “Use App” dialog; and by any app that uses its
own icon in a notification. (Presumably the notification cases can’t be
fixed in notify-osd and indicator-messages themselves, because they
don’t know whether the icon they receive is an app icon or something
more specific.) That almost certainly still isn’t a complete list.

These “oh, we need to fix this bug here too, and here, and here”
comments bolster my proposal in wontfixed bug 1363015: there should be a
toolkit element for rendering an app’s icon in the current standard
style. As long as every place that renders app icons has to include its
own code for making a transparent background opaque, along with all
their other details (icon location in click/snap packages, aspect ratio
sanity-checking, rounded corners, relief/shadow, etc), then whenever the
rendering of app icons changes, time will be wasted on multiple
implementations and some of them will be forgotten or diverge
accidentally.

Bug description:
  I uploaded an app with an icon that had a transparent background.

  In the dash, the wallpaper is visible behind the icon.  And in the
  launcher, the icon is presented on a dark background, making it look
  very different than on dash with its white background.

  Neither looks great, and makes the shell look a little janky.
  Obviously, the app author should just fix their icon.  But if they DO
  give us a bad icon, we should fix it for them, else we look bad too.

Using simple test apps (lp:~gerboland/+junk/openglwindow &
lp:~gerboland/+junk/qquickwindow-debug), it appears that yes Qt is using
OpenGL 1.4 on X for both raw GL and QtQuick apps.

The "Context format: ... version 1.4" the thing to look for.

The EGL backend for Qt (X uses the GLX backend) is requiring OpenGl2 or
greater (since that is what the Window is asking for), but the GLX
backend seems to ignore that request, and just work.

  when I try to launch Unity 8 and Mir, after writing the password on the login 
(in the image attached) the bar to enter the password disappears and my 
computer screen stays stuck without them let me do anything. the connection 
begins to separate and reattach alone and I can only move the cursor. it makes 
the computer unusable and I am forced to restart forced to then enter into 
Unity 7. represented in the screenshot is the lock status after entering the 
password.

Yesterday i had the same problem again. But this time without being in desktop 
mode before.
This time i used the tablet mode like so often before.

Then the weird thing in the video happened.

After i suspended the tablet 2 times (short press in the right top
button) the tablet worked the normal way.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) Install Ubuntu with the default LVM encryption recipe
  2) Set Ubuntu to automatically install security updates on the background
  3) Use ubuntu for 5 months

  Actual results:
  The system automatically installs security updates for the kernel under 
/boot. It's never removes previous kernel images. After about five months, the 
/boot partition created by the install recipe (i.e. sized according to the 
judgment of Ubuntu developers—not me) fills up and the unattended updater 
crashes during the next kernel update.

  Expected results:
  Expected the unattended updater to leave the nearest kernel and the previous 
one on /boot and to automatically remove older kernel images. Expected the 
system installer to set up /boot such that it never runs out of space when the 
system updater operates automatically.

Bug description:
  Currently if one chooses to use LVM or encrypted install, a /boot
  partition is created of 236Mb

  Once kernel updates start being released this partition soon fills
  until people are left unable to upgrade.

  While you and I might know that we need to watch partition space, many
  of the people we have installing think that a windows disk is a disk
  and not a partition, education is probably the key - but in the
  meantime support venues keep needing to deal with the fact the
  partition is too small and/or old kernels are not purged as new ones
  install.

  When using "inputMethodHints: Qt.ImhDigitsOnly" in an SDK TextField, I
  get a keyboard that includes  a hyphen, a space, a period, and a plus
  (with extended # and * on the plus).

  That looks more like a keyboard I'd expect for
  Qt.ImhFormattedNumbersOnly.

  But I only asked for digits!

Knocking down to Medium importance. The patch Dan supplied mitigates the
problem by omitting generated interfaces so that knocks the noise level
down a bit. A fix is probably a little dicy and seems like it should be
tied to the node's role/configured services, hardware configuration,
etc. etc.

  M10 "forgot" my ubuntu one account. While trying to install something
  from the store I need to enter my ubuntu one account information which
  is weired because I already did in the past and no worries so far.
  When I enter the information and try to log in I still get the reply
  that I don't have an account. I should go to the account settings. But
  there is no option to add an ubuntu one account.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Open few tabs with websites
  2. Click 'New tab' button

  Expected result:
  Browser creates new tab and switches to it immediately.

  What happens instead:
  New tab is created and browser switches to it after about 2-3 seconds. Long 
enough to makes me worried if everything is fine with it.

  Similar situation is when I have a 'new tab' already opened as a
  background tab. When I switch to it from a tab with a webpage, the
  action is taking too long.

  Actual result:
  phone lock screen is displayed

  sim lock screen should appear before the phone lock screen

  It also happens sometimes on arale without any pattern to reproduce,
  just random on reboot.

  After debugging it seems that this is caused by ofono removing the
  modems in the middle of the unlock process. You can see the difference

  Blank screen after boot

Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-Unused-Dependencies "true";
there and is it uncommented? What is in the Unattended-Upgrade::Allowed-Origins 
block? Is unattended-upgrades enabled by default: What does Updates-tab show in 
Software & Updates (i.e. software-properties-gtk), particularly items "When 
there are * updates". What does "sudo dpkg-reconfigure unattended-upgrades" 
show? 

I upgraded from 15.10 i.e. not clean install, and there is no "Remove-
New-Unused-Dependencies" in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades.

Bug description:
  Currently if one chooses to use LVM or encrypted install, a /boot
  partition is created of 236Mb

  Once kernel updates start being released this partition soon fills
  until people are left unable to upgrade.

  While you and I might know that we need to watch partition space, many
  of the people we have installing think that a windows disk is a disk
  and not a partition, education is probably the key - but in the
  meantime support venues keep needing to deal with the fact the
  partition is too small and/or old kernels are not purged as new ones
  install.

  Explanation:
  since a while numerous users are posting threads on ubuntuforums asking help 
about that issue, like that one:

  Proposition 1:
  either 'apt' and/or 'dpkg' conf files need a feature to set the max number of 
installed kernels. That setting entry should be modifiable via dconf-editor, 
and set by default to '2'

  Upgrade process:
  apt/dpkg automatically purge the oldest non wanted headers/images after a new 
kernel installation (installing & purging in the same process)

  That way the non techies users ignoring the mandatory manual
  maintenance will be safe with /boot.

  Proposition 2:
  set a monthly cronjob to run 'apt-get clean'  'apt-get autoclean'  'apt-get 
autoremove' to  clean up the system.
  But the sad effect is that the cache is purged, not only the unwanted old 
installed kernels

Bug description:
  When you install Ubuntu today with full disk encryption you end up
  with a separate small /boot partition (approx 200Mb).  It doesn't take
  long for this to fill up with old kernels.

  While we mark old kernels for auto-removal nothing (on the default
  system) actually triggers removal of unused packages; a human needs to
  invoke (or arrange to be invoked) 'apt-get autoremove'.

  /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades documents an
  Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-Unused-Dependencies configuration option.
  I'd suggest we consider enabling this option by default on new
  installs.
