Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Today vs 2012; What's different today in the Squeezebox world?
I did disable MOG at some point. After which I was told that while MOG was dead in the US, it still existed in some way in NZ or Australia. But that's been years ago. Might be dead by now, too... Yes, and what about Napster, Deezer, Amazon CD store, MusicIP, Orange Liveradio and Slacker, etc? Of these I believe all but Amazon are still very much alive. Amazon CD store should work, too, as it's not a service, but some implementation on our end. But whether it's used or not, I don't know. But I'd agree that we could probably flag many of them disabled by default. -- Michael ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Thinking about this overnight I realized that I have at least two creative solutions that will avoid the double wifi hop: 1. Plug my Mac directly into the ethernet. I think that someone mentioned this above, but I am so stuck in the wifi frame of thinking that it did not sink in initially. While my stereo is way across the room from the router/modem, my computer shares a wall with the router/modem. Roughly 15 feet, ethernet can handle that distance, no? This solution lets me use the current LMS along with the latest plugins for streaming. 2. Dust off my 2008 MacBook Pro which was sitting in the closet next to my Squeezebox Touch's. Plug it directly into the ethernet and use it as a server. This solution might come with security problems though, as the operating system on that machine is long past receiving security updates from Apple. Thanks for your assistance with this. Rebuffering could mean either Wifi capacity to Touch is at limited (e.g. sending files as 96kbps WAV and not flac and lots of other wifi traffic) or interference from other devices (e.g. BT, wireless home cinema system) 1. Check for possible conflict/interference from other wifi networks. Use wifi scanner. See if any other Wifi nets are nearby. - set router not to auto-choose channel and set channel at least occupied or 1,6 or 11 (some users say avoid 6). Touch is an "old" b/g device and cannot discriminate as well as newer devices. 2. Some modems routers have new features which be upsetting - turn off things like bonding, optional feature which may not be fully backwards compatible with an b/g device. 3. If using dual bandwidth - move as applicable devices to 5Ghz. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=112488 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

for wifi, make sure you're using only 1, 6, or 11 and not automatic (all these are set in your router, typically from a webGUI interface to the router administration). Also, you mention you're in NY. Maybe a crowded wifi space. Use some sort of program (lots of free ones available) to see what the least crowded nearby channels are for you, and use of of these (again, 1, 6, or 11, as these channels don't overlap with adjacent channels). *Home:* VBA 4TB (2.5) -or- rPi4B/pCP6.0/4TB>LMS 7.9.3>Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio (all ethernet) *Cottage:* VBA 3TB (2.4) -or- rPi4B/pCP6.0/4TB>LMS 7.9.1>Touch>Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (ethernet, Radio WIFI) *Office:* Win10(64)>LMS 7.9.3>Squeezelite *The Wild: *rPi3B+/pCP4.0, hifiberry Dac+Pro, 4TB USB (LMS & Squeezelite) *Controllers:* iPhone11 & iPadAir2 (iPeng), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay 7.8 on Win10(64) *Files:* ripping: dbpa > FLAC; post-rip: mp3tag, PerfectTunes; Streaming: Spotify garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=112488 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

But, as you've discovered, typically things are best if there is only one WIFI hop. Many have their music server wired and use the TOUCH with WIFI.Perhaps you should buy an rPi4B, install piCorePlayer, connect a USB portable drive with your music to the rPi, and now you have a complete LMS music server the size of a paperback book (rPi and USB drive combined!). And this can be connected out of the way directly to your router with ethernet. And total cost probably less than $100. Or as you mentioned, just use either Spotify, Tidal, etc. to stream music. Then only one wifi hop (router to touch). *Home:* VBA 4TB (2.5) -or- rPi4B/pCP6.0/4TB>LMS 7.9.3>Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio (all ethernet) *Cottage:* VBA 3TB (2.4) -or- rPi4B/pCP6.0/4TB>LMS 7.9.1>Touch>Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (ethernet, Radio WIFI) *Office:* Win10(64)>LMS 7.9.3>Squeezelite *The Wild: *rPi3B+/pCP4.0, hifiberry Dac+Pro, 4TB USB (LMS & Squeezelite) *Controllers:* iPhone11 & iPadAir2 (iPeng), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay 7.8 on Win10(64) *Files:* ripping: dbpa > FLAC; post-rip: mp3tag, PerfectTunes; Streaming: Spotify garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=112488 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Voila: no buffering when playing the Mac's music database on ethernet!!! When I unplug the ethernet and restore the wifi connection, the buffering comes back when playing the music database. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Today vs 2012; What's different today in the Squeezebox world?
My iTunes database on this particular computer is old school, just AAC 256. When I used these same two Touch's back in 2010-2012, I was able to play reliably the AAC 256 database and also the AAC lossless database. But that was my place in California, and the wifi router was probably current technology to the technology in the Touch. I wonder if it's related to the newer router / modem. I have now tried plugging in the SBox Touch to the router / modem unit directly, and still get re-buffering playing the database on the computer. Internet radio plays fine though. sherington wrote: > My experience is that wifi really won't allow anything above about FLAC > 5 > to work smoothly without rebufferring. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Today vs 2012; What's different today in the Squeezebox world?
My experience is that wifi really won't allow anything above about FLAC 5 to work smoothly without rebufferring. The easy way to check this is just to play a series of tracks ripped to low kbps up to the high end 'high res' stuff. The difference can be up 5,000 kbits per track. So a recent download can be at >5kbps whereas a track you dowloaded or ripped a few years ago could be at 128kbps. The latter is unlikely to cause any rebufferring whilst the latter definitely will - over wifi. Of course, to have a reliable wifi system is now perfectly possible with the current gen of mesh systems etc but you may still have to physically wire the Touch into the network if you routinely listen to highres stuff. For instance I would not bother with installing the EDO stuff on a Touch that only relies on wifi connect. I'm assuming that you can see these in LMS, select something to play, and then once playing, the TOUCH starts rebuffering. Correct? p.s. As a test can you temporarily setup the Mac wired to your router via ethernet? With your current setup, you have two "wifi" hops. From the Mac running LMS back to the router and then from the router to the Touch. This can sometimes be a problem. Yikes, this is funny, I did not realize how ambiguous my comment was. Computer connected to internet via wifi. Touch connected also via wifi. By "radio" I mean the radio function on the Touch. Radio seems to work ok, nicely actually, but when I try to play music from my iTunes database on Mac via LMS, it keeps rebuffering. Running 7.9.3 thinking it sounds more stable than 8 right now, but, willing to try 8 if you think that might help. 2015 MacBook Pro 13" 16gig I7 running 10.15.5 (latest MacOS). I did a "rescan". Is there a clear solution here or a matter of debugging? I assume the wifi connection is ok since the radio plays quite well. Thank you. More info is always welcome. I will start with downloading the newer versions of LMS. Should I go for 7.9.3 or 8? I must mention that LMS8 is the latest and greatest, of course, but it's far from finalized. It's stable as of today, but this could change at any time. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Today vs 2012; What's different today in the Squeezebox world?
I'll just add that the Touch remains a very competitive device for the purposes you've described. It's DAC is fine for direct output to a set of small powered speakers, and if connected to an external DAC it is completely up to the demands of a great system. The Raspberry Pi solutions come into play if you want to add a zone, or if a Touch stops working; their sound quality is as good or better than the Touch. For me, the big improvement of the past eight years has been the convenience of using mobile devices as control points. There are apps for Android and iOS that duplicate the library and control functionality of LMS. There also is now, as mentioned, a contemporary "Material Skin" installable via plugin that looks great on desktop or in mobile browser. There is nothing I need from Squeezebox that it can't do. Significant change in development - development is done by community, no big release backed up by big testing team, lots of continuous updates with feedback on bugs from community. 8.0 is latest version which has most development. 7.9.3 only gets essential support. Most new development are driven external internet services - Spotify, Tidal, Deezer etc and huge variety of streaming live and on-demand and podcast services. New service often require new support of internet standards such as security https with TLS 1.3 and so latest version of LMS has latest support. There is support via plugins for playing via Airplay, Chromecast and uPNP devices. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Today vs 2012; What's different today in the Squeezebox world?
1. In many ways the squeezebox/LMS ecosystem has never been stronger. The rPi revolution (and piCorePlayer), among others, has solved the discontinuation of the hardware. The usergroups at this forum are doing amazing work. 2. LMS can allow one to play spotify, tidal, and Quobuz streaming services. 3. You should run either LMS 7.9.3 or LMS 8.0 http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.9 http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=8.0 4. You can point the LMS music library to wherever you have your itunes music files stored, and LMS will scan this location and make those files available to use. no need for any special "use itunes xml file" etc. 5. Load up LMS, set it up. fire up your Touch players and have fun. As you can see from my signature, I'm still using my Squeezebox players with great results. *Home:* VBA 4TB (2.5) -or- rPi4B/pCP6.0/4TB>LMS 7.9.3>Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio (all ethernet) *Cottage:* VBA 3TB (2.4) -or- rPi4B/pCP6.0/4TB>LMS 7.9.1>Touch>Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (ethernet, Radio WIFI) *Office:* Win10(64)>LMS 7.9.3>Squeezelite *The Wild: *rPi3B+/pCP4.0, hifiberry Dac+Pro, 4TB USB (LMS & Squeezelite) *Controllers:* iPhone11 & iPadAir2 (iPeng), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay 7.8 on Win10(64) *Files:* ripping: dbpa > FLAC; post-rip: mp3tag, PerfectTunes; Streaming: Spotify garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=112488 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
