There are meant to be very large numbers of developers working on Ubuntu. How
much is Trisquel able to benefit from that? What are the developers that work
specifically on Trisquel generally trying to do most of the time?
By the way, gNewSense is also a Linux-libre Ubuntu based distro. What
This forum runs on pretty basic code. Isn't there something a bit more
sophisticated that we could use, to allow more functionality?
What features are you missing? Open source misses the point.
I heard that Office Libre is better, but I don't know why.
Office libre comes by default with Trisquel.
For example, login using OpenID. Being able to have a signature. Smileys.
Buttons to click on to add an html link. That sort of stuff. It is all
available on the Ubuntu forums application.
Trisquel is 90% Ubuntu. Trisquel devs deal (almost?) exclusively with freedom
issues.
gNewSense was based on Ubuntu but the next version will be based on Debian.
Trisquel was originally (in
Battlefield 3 is not open source, neither is it free. But it is an amazing
product that really puts to work the most advanced graphics cards out there.
A lot of work went into making it that way. That took a lot of effort time
and sweat and tears. I cannot see how such an advanced computer
Glad to hear apvp you got it sorted. Silly ubiquity bug!
I wonder how a flash thumb drive would work if used as a btrfs seed. Thus it
would be a read-only drive in a copy-on-write setup.
I think this could be interesting as most files probably remain unchanged. Of
course, flash is slower
Ubuntu forums were running a proprietary application the last time I looked.
Many free software forums do offer those features as well. The Trisquel

Yes it is. It certainly wasn't true with so many other types of applications.
I don't see how games would be different.

LibreOffice has technical advantage because it is released under a copyleft
license, unlike OpenOffice. Useful code can be copied from OpenOffice to
LibreOffice but not vice versa. Thus LibreOffice contains all useful features
of OpenOffice and more.
Both licenses are free software but
Just to add to this. Libre Office is a fork of OpenOffice.org. It was created
in result of Oracles inaction on what was going to happen with
OpenOffice.org. Under SUN OpenOffice.org was developed and there was no
community involvement. SUN didn't work with the community even though it was
A lot or projects seem to be getting off the ground thanks to kickstarter.
I'm not sure if we should be supporting kickstarter although it doesn't seem
to be hurting free software any.
For those who don't know what kickstarter is. Kickstart is a web site where

is still around. I'm not sure why one would run this distribution over
Trisquel. Maybe geek cred or something? It's a lot more work and the security

Great to hear you solved it. Someone (may be me :-) should sum up the
modification necessary to run Trisquel stable from flash-based media in the
wiki.
Chris,
it seems logical to me that someone would not use any Flash-based storage for
heavy random write-access.
I do not think that the interface (USB vs. SATA vs. IDE) plays a big part
here. A CF card inside a USB card reader will have a different lifespan

I prefer a nice, clean forum. Why do I need to see a pic of the poster,
and know how many cups of Ubuntu, and which roast she's had on the day

I have installed Trisquel on a sandisk mm2 card using usb adapter.
Maybe I should have rephrased it. The problems I see may not be the result of
write access to the card. It could have other explanations.
I have done a lot of testing though with solid setups (ext2 rather than
ext3/ext4, read-only setups with AUFS and ram, etc). The updating part in my
One of the things I've always wondered is if the density of flash could be
negatively impacting the results. If 64GB is the latest available in Micro
SDHC then maybe 16 or 32GB would work better. I've always tended to use the
most expensive density available given the limited space. However
There are definitely benefits like this to running off flash based medium
than CD. Not to mention size.

You have to remember also that the forums are tied to the mailing

OK, I have found my first delinquent for the test. A 1GB USB stick I once

It is sad that Trisquel's membership roster actually went down in the total

We need to do more fund raising. 400 euros is definitely inconsequential. It
would seem the donations are brining in more on a monthly basis than members
For those who are not members what is holding you back?
I'm also going to ask what skills do people have?
If you can't contribute financially can you contribute some other skill? What

I'm going to start a new post since this one got off-topic a bit about
raising funds for Trisquel.
Trisquel uses Ubuntu's packages as a base and select some to create the
default installation images. There is quite some technical work and not only
freedom issues (and freedom issues lead to more technical work, such as
Abrowser, which is specific to Trisquel).
You are not always writing the same random file, do you? If you do, I believe
the result does not tell much since the new write confirms what was on the
drive ('rm' does *not* remove the data, just the inode).
Sense of Direction
For being an Ubuntu based distro, the benefit for the Trisquel team is that
there is a company out there (Canonical) that is testing their packages for
the Ubuntu release that others can benefit from. Kinda like with CentOS and
Scientific Linux where Red Hat puts a lot of
Although the schedule is not official, it exists. Trisquel's versions usually
are released during the LibrePlanet conference and for the Free Software Day
(it is going to be September 15th this year). This bi-annual pace is about
five months delayed w.r.t. Ubuntu's. As a home user, I am
I believe the Apache Foundation has more important things to worry about
these days like Hadoop. Btw, has anyone tried to setup Hadoop on a Trisquel
machine? I know you can manually set it up or use the
https://launchpad.net/~hadoop-ubuntu/+archive/stable PPA for Trisquel 5.5 and
above.
t3g: Magic Banana makes a good point here about the problem existing because
of the lack of resources (people/money). Rubén doesn't have the time to deal
with setting a definite schedule, maintaining the forums, etc. If he gets
sick there isn't anybody who can take up the slack. If his other
I sometimes take it from the perspective if I were to start a new company and
outfit the computers with a version of GNU/Linux. What do I choose? I'm not
going to pay for Red Hat and CentOS is not really my taste. I like the Ubuntu
ecosystem and the 5 years of support for the LTS releases
Yes it is. FSF has a list of popular licenses with comments here
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html
I also thought that about abrowser until somebody pointed me to
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=abrowser
Oh, I'm aware about the types of licenses. I'm just curious if there were any
hidden licensing conflicts like with Chromium where they say it is 100% free
software under a BSD license, but some of the included licenses are vague on
what they really are.
I guess another benefit about Hadoop
See- if your not using Trisquel for freedom's sake wouldn't it be easier to
use Trisquel's theme on Ubuntu instead? I guess that is what you were trying
to do by sending the above email. Anyway. It seems like it might be wise to
just stay away from the Trisquel forums in this instance.
No, the pretty interface was the first thing that got me interested in trying
Trisquel and from then on I was able to change my daily habits to be more
aware about free software. I learned to use different tools for programming
and stick to free software and open standards for my daily use.
