I heard that it takes ages to run memtest?
People always say that the debian installer recommends non-free firmware.
However, whenever I installed it on notebooks with wifi chips dependant on
non-free firmware, it never recommended anything.
The wifi just didn't work, and that's it.
I heard other people here saying the same thing.
If you really need to use "expert install", there is in my view no problem
whatsoever.
An expert knows what he is doing; offering the possibility to install
non-free software is imo only a problem if unexperienced users end up doing
so by mistake, because they don't know better.
My freedom
This problem gets adressed by a program called "checkinstall".
If present in the system, you can after "./configure" and "make"
run the command "make checkinstall" instead of "make install".
It creates a .deb package out of your compiled program.
Advantage: you can install it with dpkg -i and
”Vector based formats are the preferred choice when designing and

The advantage of vector based formats is that their quality remains

I cannot understand why they should be the preferred
Hey guys,
i have a thinkpad t60 and i often encounter problems when i do stuff that
requires a little bit more ram.
A webpage with a lot of images can slow the pc down in a way that it's
effectively frozen;
also if i do some work with gimp.
I thought, maybe the ram is the bottleneck, because
A lot of people here think that using tor through icecat is insecure; i
agree.
The topic is too complicated and the guys of the tor project do an awesome
work there.
There should not be such a misleading and dangerous feature in trisquel by
default.
Unexperienced users might use it and
I guess a lot of people here think that it's easier to make ubuntu
non-malicious and free than to make debian user-friendly.
I disagree...
Somebody likes green...
Thanks a lot, tramp.
I especially love the numix-circle theme.
And don't worry, your actor-career will skyrocket when you play the raja in
my movie.
But you'll get now bitcoins.
Cheers ;)
I guess it was quidam who compromised your system remotely from his debian
machine; or maybe rms or both.
They like to hang out together and share some proprietary apps, that's what
i've heard.
Why the hell got this downvoted? It was obviously a JOKE
He's telling you that this is of course possible if USE_KCHMVIEWER is a
variable, but at the moment, it's not.
The compiler won't no about USE_KCHMVIEWER at all, because before it starts
to compile, the so called "preprocessor" already replaced every single chain
of characters that are
Hmm I was never able to make it look so super sexy...
have any info how to do it?
I have my super-nintendo usb-controller;
don't need anything else. period.
Wow, yeah it does!
If I didn't know it was xfce, I would have guessed that it's some kind of
pimped gnome shell or something like that.
A short guide would be highly appreciated!
(I guess not just by me)
It is, and it would be great if you could file a bug.
However, I experienced problems concerning graphical updaters in many
distributions.
The apt-get update routine is the safest one that always works, i guess.
You're misinformed. The kernel _is_ libre.
If you know better (i guess you don't), please give some references.
I ally myself with you, st.
This system is major bullshit.
You know what i would find funny?
If somebody who downvotes a certain post has to write a short explanation
below _why_ he downvoted it.
I'm sure a lot of people can't.
I'm sure a lot of people just enjoy letting out the little
I doubt that the kernel is suggesting anything... rather some software of the
actual Debian System.
"You have to understand the reason we do this. You preach freedom too, but
you use non-free software too don't you?"
The point is: how does someone "preach freedom"?
Telling people to value freedom is one thing, criticizing others for making
compromises while doing the very same thing,
To be honest, i never quite understood the big relevance of think pinguin.
It's great to have a shop we can recommend to non-technical people if want to
buy a system that is capable of running trisquel, but for me personally, it's
easy to find a system like that a lot cheaper somewhere around
Does the problem only occur with katakana or also with hiragana?
The forum is not "just fine" at the moment.
A major issue occurs if posts get a lot of replies. At some point, it's
impossible to find out "who replied to who".
Also, nested posts get more and more narrow and at somepoint, are impossible
to read.
Trisquel aims at people who are not so
I can only help with the third issue.
Trisquel goes the "Ubuntu way" when it comes to root authentication.
It uses sudo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudo).
I think you actually know that but maybe you forgot during your time with
debian.
So from my understanding, there is a root account in
I also once did a full disk encryption (also with debian i guess) and it
didn't take long at all to setup.
But i really think it was successfully encrypted, because everytime i booted
the pc, i had to enter a passphrase.
Maybe it's a different way of encrypting?
Would be great if somebody
"prioritizing access via a computer that is not a free software device (a
"smartphone") is painfully ironic in the context of discussions intended
for use by people discussing a totally free software operating system."
Sure, let's not care about people who aren't already freed. That will help
I still think bluezo's messages should not be hidden.
Downvoted maybe, but not hidden.
Nothing should be hidden unless it's real spam in the sense of "buy viagra"
or racist /violent stuff.
The way this forum works at the moment puts its own values ad absurdum.
Does the trisquel community
Yeah that's right.
If someone recommends non-free software or breaks the community guidelines in
any other way, i understand that he gets downvoted.
Everything else is just bullshit.
Thumbs up for kobo deluxe.
It's really intense I have to say. At the moment, i'm at stage 20 and shit is
getting a little bit insane here.
The downside is that (as far as i can see) there is sometimes no way to
survive, no matter how good your reflexes are.
And i'm not sure if you can
"Should it not be an individual's freedom of choice to choose what the fuck
they run on their machine?"
I never argued against that, you got me wrong.
I don't think that the way Chris is doing his business is wrong, and i don't
think that Debian does something wrong.
I just say that it's
"Why not?"
I don't know, but I can't think of any developer studio that succeeded that
way.
You think maybe it's because people don't really try, but i doubt it.
"With the same (wrong) argument, you could state that free software will
never penetrate the server market. Wait..."
You're
Just to clearify this: i don't want to talk negative about your effort in any
way and i really wish you success.
It's true that there could have happened more in the retux-marketing section,
but we all learn new things, right ;)
"And this means that I can't "like to see more people doing what onpon4 is
doing and developing free games commercially"???"
You want more people do stuff that is not working and ends in failure?
Hmm you don't seem to care so much about them, but of course you're free to
"like seeing that."
You're shipping non-free software if people want so.
Debian is delivering non-free software in their repos if people want so.
It's NOTHING different and the point that you're not a distro doesn't harm my
point in the slightest.
"> Encouraging people not to even talk about this software does
You dodged my point using false logic.
"Haha, but the reverse is true and all people that make proprietary stuff
are? Thanks for proving my point. :)"
The correct reverse from the sentence is that there are people out there who
are assholes and want to make stuff proprietary - which is
"I've been on these forums 4+ years and besides Ruben packaging a Trisquel
ISO every few years, no one here has really contributed anything to the free
software cause of any significance. People here are more concerned with
pointing fingers and telling you that you are wrong without
"Ssshhh... we're not allowed to point to stuff like this because it's clearly
not possible for free games to raise large sums of money. :)"
You don't make any sense.
Why should two proprietary games raising enormous amounts of money prove that
this is also possible for free games?
Did I
You think the development studio would have reached the position to raise 80
million dollar if they went the libre way from the very start of their
carreer?
They would never have gained enough financial power to be visible;
and i can also imagine that some of your business partners would give
"I'd like to see more people doing what onpon4 is doing and developing free
games commercially."
Would you please open your eyes? It's obviously _not_ working.
I wished too that it would work and a lot of people could make a living from
developing great free software games; reality is
"Just because someone is unimaginative and can't think of how to raise enough
to fund what they want to do doesn't justify making stuff proprietary."
Are you more imaginative?
Have a plan for earning enough cash in order to make a free video game?
Hundred-thousands of gigantic masterpieces
" we'll never get to a free solution tomorrow if all we do is respond to
ignorant comments defending our position. In this case it's not even entirely

So let's shut ourself up from new impulses so that we can stick to our
opinions that we currently have?
I think that's a bad way
If you have fun doing it and don't care that it may result in failure, then
just go for it.
A lot of great things origin from just playing around for fun.
Free software is about _control_ over your _computing_.
In my view, retro gaming consoles may technically be computers, but I don't
use them that way; i don't do computing with them - i don't do any tasks
besides playing the game like an interactive movie.
RMS once pointed out that nowadays,
I think it's funny, too ;)
especially moxalt's reply to your post was hillarious^^
Well, it's more of an axiom than an argument.
that's a bad idea for visually disabled people.
I read the description and it definitly says that it will send SMS messages -
no internet connection requiered.
So no, it's not textsecure.
I also wonder why textsecure doesn't show up in fdroid.
Does anyone have a solution?
You can use secure chats in telegram, which provide end-to-end encryption
(you can't use this feature with the normal telegram client for gnu-linux,
but there are other, un-official free software clients that allow you to use
it on your desktop as well), then you don't have to worry about
The music is really good. Where did you get it from?
Besides, my suggestion may sound like a joke, but you should maybe check out
a few episodes of the Angry Video Game Nerd (youtube).
He reviews some of the worst platform games of all time, and
despite the name and the offen rough humour of
It indeed does help.
Maybe you can get a volunteer artist to make a mockup (is this how it's
called?) of a leveldesign that he would create if the goal is reached.
Just one picture, really stunning;
even better would be a whole level or maybe just a part of the level with
this new design
Well i really appreciate your effort and think commercially developing and
selling free software is the way to go...but:
The level you showed in the video looks exactly like supertux; same music,
same graphics, minor changes in gameplay.
I'm a huge 2-d sidescroller fan; loved the mario games
For example, The same way the stasi in nazi germany (...)
Major history-knowledge fail.

Doesn't this rise legal issues?
Why not?
Additional language categories shouldn't cost anything; what are the
disadvantages of creating a new one?
The apps on the desktop look pretty proprietary to me; at least i've never
encountered them in the free world.
For the discussion, that would mean that SaSS is things that are good for
privacy. An obvious bug!
Not in the new quantumgravity programing language i'm using;
go and build up some knowledge about computers, banana! You're completely
outdated.
Perhaps you should be more interested in what's good for
improving privacy than dogmatically sticking to someone's definitions of
terminology.
I think you still don't get it: you can be interested in what's good for
improving your privacy _without_ calling the use of search engines SaaSS.
All services have to keep some track of who made which query in
order to get them the right results back (we don't want people asking
for cat pictures to get non-cat pictures back).
Why should this be the case?
It's perfectly possible to perform a search for some user and delete all data
I can see some doubletalk in this forum going on, too.
Lately, tomlukeywood wanted to somehow make his family use replicant phones
instead of some proprietary ones (if i remember correctly), though they don't
value freedom.
The most respected answer was that he shouldn't try to trick them
Maybe this snappy itself will be free software, but it can isolate the
ubuntu-ecosystem even more, which might get filled up with proprietary
software;
trisquel could end up in a bad position that way.

Hmm it's a difficult question.
I also wonder if actually using a normal mail provider is SaaSS (in contrast
to running your own).
I mean, the job your mail provider is doing could be done on your own
computer, you just have to install the right libre program, right?
On the other hand, though
It isn't SaaSS because the average user can't practically do
this kind of computing
That's very vague;
a lot of people would argue that Gnu/linux is practically too difficult for
the average user...
or, imagine if a libre dictionary is very complicated and an online
dictionary is very easy
p switched to gui, huh??
you're not a real hacker anymore!
Do you beleive in the virtue of software freedom? If you think it's okay for
free software to be useable only by a small minority of people, then in
effect you're saying most people should use proprietary software
This statement is _ridiculous_.
The virtue of software freedom is neither
Oh, and there should be a way to hide or even delete troll threads, not only
single posts.
And the troll-hole should be renamed to smalltalk;
don't think we need a place for real trolls or spam in this forum.
Basically, Ruben already implemented a very good way to deal with troll
posts.
However, instead of a minus-sign, there should be a spam button.
Posts like this would be hidden in no time and the problem would be basically
solved.
I mean, the community is huge, so even dealing with a very
Actually you have already been told, but anyway:

firmware blobs since Debian squeeze. However, some packages in the main

Regarding Debian, then what's the difference with Trisquel? Ok, it's
based on Ubuntu.
Then Compared with GnewSense? I know this distro has a full list of
de-blobed programs.
Is that actually pointless?
Naah it's not really pointless.
First, let me talk about Debian, the operating system (not the
This doesn't make sense or maybe some explanation is missing ... just think
about wifi firmware;
if what you say is true, why does the linux kernel (in a broader sense, the
OS) have to provide proper firmware for the wifi card to function?
Shouldn't the firmware be installed and executed on
Great talk so far!
I'm very curious for the rest.

Yeah, but i heard him comment on refusing to use a credit card. He said that

Thanks to Icecat + Tor, he even started connecting to websites ^^
see his libreplanet speech.
Thanks for your suggestions!
Anyhow, the CC clause is valid and i can use the song without the jamendo
commercial license, though nobody really knows what this exactly is.
Hey everyone,
sorry for the non-trisquel related topic, but it's about free culture and
license stuff, so i hope it will be tolerated here.
For many songs, there is a get commercial license button next to it;
I can understand this if the normal license of the song has a non-commercial
part

I'm not sure about the rating mechanism, but can't anybody with lots of

It's just i3.
Very often, i hide the status bar and have just the plain desktop. Trust me:
once you're used to a tiling window manager, you won't go backever again.
Please help me out:
How do I
1. create costum key bindings for launching apps?
2. launch an app at startup?
Don't know why i'm doing this, i3 works fine for me but xmonad is somehow so

Also, no, I haven't checked every circuit and chip of the X60, but
somewhere, eventually, you have to trust someone. I trust the FSF's
certification process.
That's obviously a giant misunderstanding:
The FSF's certification process is about *software freedom*, a crucial and
neccessary
Why go through all the trouble when you can get RYF certified systems like
the Libreboot X60?
Hmm have you checked the whole X60 if it's mistreating you on hardware level?
Every circuit, chip?
I haven't.
And you can't run around with a X60 for the next 20 years; the digital

If the machines available don't respect human rights

we have to stop using these machines to the extent possible.
That's a radical statement but it's logically consistent.
Though I can't answer your question, i want to add that a tablet running a
fully functional version of trisquel would be far superior to a galaxy 2
running replicant.
The latter one is barely acceptable... slow 2d graphics, no wifi, no video.
They can state their opinions as many times as they like;
