Hey everybody,
i'm getting into film making lately and want to do it quite seriously;
Do you know if there's a program that comes close to after effects?
I mean, changing color temperature, contrast, brightness?
If yes, what features are missing?
The problem is inherent in the fact that we excessively use a machine far too
complex to be understood by ourselves or anybody around us (at least as a
whole).
Some big companies understand *parts* of that machine; they are the only one
who do and even they don't understand the machine as a
Thank you very much, tom!
Hmm i think Debian should only be listed with some kind of warning or
something not to use the non-free repos i mean.
I don't think that's sufficient.
There was a mobile modem implemented in some chip as far as i remember... by
intel? don't recall properly.
I agree. Couldn't read my own post lately.
But even if it's not that extreme, it's still confusing; often I can't see
who replied to me or to the post above.
That's like suggesting
Microsoft should open-source windows.
Who wants to do that?
Of course we would suggest releasing it as *free software*...
It seems more and more than in this community, people are
avoiding *payment* more than wanting *freedom*.
In that case, i would have suggested releasing it as freeware; i don't know
which term could emphasize the freedom aspect more than free software.
So how do you come to this absurd
A final remark on this idea of taking away the freedom to be non-free:
Let's suppose there are people who want to be restricted by non-free software
really badly. It's a completely unrealistic scenario, but let's just asume
for now.
They are like please lock away the code and control my
'Software with DRM prevents the user from running their software. Software
with no DRM does not. '
So actually, proprietary software with drm is actually better than
proprietary software without drm The first one at least prevents the user
from running the proprietary software from
It's good that you try to improve your freedom-situation, but my experience
is:
if you install a little bit proprietary software on your system, you will
install more and more, and more.
Just because there is this thought like: oh well, one application more or
less won't make any

Old page and more for the sake of demonstration, but i like it very much.
Go css all the way, it's so much better than tables.
And please don't downvote t3g's post just because you disagree with his link.
The voting feature is not supposed to be used like that.
Why care about people who don't understand a thing or don't want to
understand;
i could just as well read the google company manifesto or something like
that...
Just because you're not allowed to use code by some developer and close it up
doesn't mean that this developer has suddenly power
I agree with everything except python being a stable language.
No matter which python program i ever used on no matter what system, it was
always slow, buggy and crashed in the end.
Maybe it's because there are more hobby-python programs out there? I don't
know.
As a programming language, i
I'm Clicking back to my shot of tequila and my Shakespeare.
Can it be that you are deliberatly creating those latino-clichees??
who is the big cheese?
Are you sure that libreboot actually supports booting from usb?
I know that its features are limited
My guess is that this is the problem.
In a pre-electronical age, owning a machine raised no ethical issues since
you could study its mechanisms and make sure that it's not mistreating you.
Think of a wheelbarrow for instance.
1. The owner could check how it works
2. It was technically very limited when it comes to possibly harming
I know what a server is ;)
I assumed that you have to install those apps on a running _webserver_ and
that's what i didn't want to do if i can avoid it.
And yeah, i was mainly thinking about speed and connectivity..
i just checked my upload and it's about 800 kbit/sec,
so the resulting video
Thanks, but i would have to set up my own vmux server, right?
I don't have the hardware and time to setup my own server at the moment,
sadly.
Good luck with that japanese chick, I hear they are into kinky stuff
:D
Thanks, i will try it out!!
But it's only voice, right?
@both of you
thanks a lot, i will resort to mumble once every video option out there
failed.
Oh, subrosa looks really interesting... though i fear the same problems as
with webrtc, i will try it!
Are all xmpp server fast enough to do voice and video?
She'll open the mail and just follow the instructions - everybody can do
that as long as he/she knows how to read
hmm sound easy in theory ;)
i hope she'll get it done.
But first i have to look for a working solution and maximize my chances of
succeeding fast by choosing the best programs...
oh and i forgot... the best microphone i have is installed on my cell phone
running replicant;
so solutions that work between android and iphone would be appreciated, but i
see that this is difficult so other options are welcome as well.
Hey guys!
i really need your help here...
I want to do a voice chat to japan (from germany) and actually i hope for a
video chat too.
The girl i want to talk to isn't into computers at all, but she is willing to
install what i tell her...
now, here comes the big problem: she uses an iphone
It looks like server software...?
Actually i rather want a solution for pc.
And I know about jitsi but what is the best way to set it up?
You will never know whether this provider is really running the software he
claims to run.
Even if he did, maybe he makes a copy of your mailbox every now and then?
That's perfectly possible because he has physical access to the server.
Once you send data to a server, you're giving away control
You're fundamentally wrong and you've been told countless times.
Making a product that does not do the desired job for somebody isn't
oppressing this person.
I hesitate to go any deeper in this, because this sentence is completely self
explanatory and i feel kind of stupid to point it out.
Supertramp, i have to say that i love your slang!
again, same experience :P
I can't stand this!! How can we play snes games??
Why not make a button that explicitly reads spam instead of a minus sign?
That way there can't be any misunderstanding.
but on principle as emulators do give some control to the roms
for creating save files etc
You can check if the emulator gives control to the rom since the emulator is
free software; that ensures that we don't really have to worry about that.
And of course the game was never designed to be
gNewSense is based on Debian stable
Sadly, that's not true. The latest stable release Gnewsense 3.0 'parks' is
based on Debian squeeze, which is oldstable.
The current stable version is wheezy and afaik the new version of Gnewsense
will be based on it.
Sounds like good news at first, but i'm
Yeah and we shouldn't forget that Debian really contains *a lot* of packages.
I guess KDE also offers some kind of addon system and probably more
applications, not just iceweasel.
But why not just abandon MIPS?
RMS switched from yeeloong to a gluglug pc and besides him i guess there is
I agree.
There is this strange trend going on that people are seeking for mail
providers that run free software for the sake of privacy. That makes no
sense whatsoever- if the server runs free software, that's good *for the
owner of the server* and not for the user.
When it comes to our

Can't say that it happens everytime but affter a while it freezes.
It's strange but my experience with zsnes was actually pretty good until now.
Does anybody know alternatives?
Maybe we should try a different version.
If you found one please post more information. If it's a digital jail like
almost every computer with phone, then there is likely a lot of backdoors
from which the developers (companies or individuals) can get the information
they want. Adding Tor on top doesn't makes much sense;
Sorry,
Thank you for all your comments!
I appreciate your opinions, but honestly i hoped for more technical reasons
why you think tor is unsuitable for a task like this.
Maybe it's not designed for this purpose, so what? I don't care what it was
designed for as long as it does the job.
SSL will keep the data secret I exchange with an onlineshop, but sure my isp
can see the URL and hence can easily figure out what i buy.
If i had to choose between a rich world of non-free *culture* (such as video
game art) and a dry desert of free culture (which would probably be a
consequence of the difficulties making cash out of artistic work), i'd choose
the first one.
Non functional data doesn't have to be free,
Hey,
i thought about two things lately:
is there any problem using tor for online-shopping (with ssl)? Of course the
shop owner will know my real name, but still my ISP and all the nodes along
the way won't know what i'm buying.
It really bothers me that every idiot knows my shopping
But the firmware gets executed, doesn't it?
I have to say, i don't have any knowledge about where firmware is stored
exactly, how it gets executed and what it can basically do.
But sure it has to be loaded onto the device and get executed... why
shouldn't it be capable to access the
Hey everybody!
I'm really happy right now because my plan to free my smartphone worked!!
I had an galaxy s4 and decided to sell it and buy a galaxy s2 instead.
When i finally got it, i installed replicant on it - it was very easy!!
Actually i imagined the whole process to be a lot more time
No, there are no replicant devices that can play videos at the moment :/
not a single one even supports wifi...
If freedom is your goal and you're willing to make some compromises (like
running a proprietary bios) then you can use a smartphone, but you should buy
a phone that is supported by replicant.
Cyanogenmod is besides replicant afaik the best choice at the moment; at
least your system is

you can combine them, but the latter one

And no offense to anyone, but it looks... not acceptable to
I know what you mean, but i'm afraid the answer is: none!
You can meet with people in real life ;)
When it comes to privacy, our technology is spoiled from the very bottom...
it's just the way the internet and pc's are designed nowadays.
But i'm talking about no-compromise-whatsoever- kind of
Sorry, but why are you scared?
I can understand that you feel upset, pissed off, oppressed...
Some big companies and states are controlling now the device in your living
room, doing *mass surveillance* like they do with millions of other people.
That's unethical and unjust and of course your
It's true, Canonical does unethical business nowadays.
However, if i'm not completely misinformed, a typical Ubuntu system should
still be a lot more free than windows or mac os, so it's still a possible
system for doing the transition to a 100% free system; after all, it's a

But a developer will only invest time if he knows that he will get payed.
That's the advantage of ordinary crowdfunding.
Your proposal is more risky... if he doesn't get any money, ok, the release
will be in a distant future, but so what?
He did the work unpayed...
it's hard to calculate that
Well spoken, supertramp...
Throw away your television!
Alex the Allegator is really awesome, and so is supertux (and supertux 2 i as
far as I remember).
Though it is a controversal topic, i want to point out that for people

community, so they are exercising freedom 2 and
I agree that it's not a freedom problem, but it *is* a problem and should be
fixed with high priority.
Hi everybody!
One of the biggest german isp's is called 'Deutsche Telekom' and i'm a
costumer of them. Normally, they sent you a router of the 'speedport series'
when you get your internet access, and so did i.
I wanted to check out if i can install the libre router software...dd wrt(?
With this new iconset, i like the interface.
It looks nice and i can do whatever i want to do with it.
Libreoffice is one of my favourite pieces of free software and i like it much
more as libreoffice back then.
Please tell us about your theme - it looks awesome!
Who said again that free software looks ugly?
I used both distributions for quite some time now.
From the freedom perspective, trisquel is a very convenient and save way to
run a 100% free OS.
In Debian, it's a bit annoying to check every add-on before installing, like
in your browser, or maybe also in your desktop environment.
Besides,
Great interviews, but both hosts are terrible;

I actually even prefer the first one because she doesn't pretend to be

We already got that she has some degree in
I'm also german and recognized that there is no activity in the
german-speaking forum whatsoever.
Don't really know why, but I sure hope that this will change!
However, i guess there are two or more experienced users keeping track of the
german forum, so very likely you will get an answer if
Refrain from speaking for everybody, ok?
If the system is free software, it is ethical and there is no need not to
support it.
GPL is always better but it's definitely not mandatory and I think the fsf
will cooperate.

Is there somebody with information / experience on this?

Yeah, and those are exactly the users that don't know about the issue and
have to be informed about it - precisely the right audience.
It's important that people don't
Ok, i tried to find out the name of my lcd display; none of the options on
http://www.libreboot.org/docs/misc/index.html#get_edid_panelname

I had a look at the
I don't like the sound of tor-like network.
Why not just design a bittorrent client that uses tor in a secure way?
I can't... there is no way for me to find out if my LCD is supported or not.
Did you do it?
It's important that you behave in a manner consistent with what you
endorse
I don't see any reason why it's not perfectly possible to agree on some
points of a speech and disagree on others;
I think that it's legit to publish a video on youtube in order to steer

Thank you very much, suitsmeveryfine, for your detailed report!
I see that it's a non-trivial and risky task, and since it indeed is my main
computer and i can't really afford to brick my device, i will refrain from
installing libreboot at the moment, even if it's VERY unpleasant for me to
Yeah, they are compiled from source (afaik).
Just to exclude a rather unlikely idea: you tried to connect with both
laptops from the exact same spot, right?
It happens right next to the rooter, too?
Well, i don't have an explanation, but I see that the signal of channel 12
doesn't get processed on one of two laptops with identical software-setups
and wifi device;
the only conclusion is that the signal gets lost because of some hardware
element.
I'm not familiar with wifi that much;
You are right Chris, I talked about a criminal record when I was actually
worried about a civil lawsuit.
I can't afford getting sued and pay like 1000 or 8000 dollars at the moment
and though the risks might not be that big, i still would like to avoid it.
I think it's more secure to go with
I'd be actually happy about this fundraising thing as long as the code *does*
get released in the end.
If people succeed to make money with free software the whole movement will
sure benefit a lot.
I don't know... it seems tempting, but i stayed away from bittorrent until
now. Don't want to have a criminal record honestly...
and i don't know very much about vpn, so i'm sceptical.
There's no way to use this application safely with tor i guess?
Can anyone explain to me how vpn is any different from a normal https proxy
(when it comes to privacy)?
I know the basic principle you connect to a private network in an
encrypted way; then to the destination server, i guess.
But the vpn provider can log my ip, right?
I don't get this.
If you have an antenna which is too bad for receiving a certain signal, it's
no use buying a second antenna which is just as bad as the one I already
have.
It's like... you can't record a certain sound signal with microphone type A
because it's not loud enough, well a
Well, you wanted to combine several wifi cards in order to improve your
connection, didn't you?
How do I make the Network Manager use two or three [wifi cards] at the
same time?
They can be used for a slight increase of wifi output with one router.
In my post i talked chose having no
According to yourself, you asked the question because several wifi cards

which itself is a statement that doesn't make any sense in the first place

I know about Monte Carlo Simulations, and I also know about light ray
tracing; it was interesting to read that they got both combined but...could
it be... that you wrote just completely random stuff without any connection
to my post whatsoever??
Did you try Alt+Ctrl+ one of the F keys? Sometimes you can get a terminal and
some error messages that way;
Maybe you can talk to your friend and he may try to install at least some gnu
distro, maybe one of the not-so-free ones until you visit him next time and
finish the job ;)
i think
Atraci is licensed under the MIT license, so it's free software.
It's not in the normal ubuntu repos afaik, so that might be the reason why
it's not in trisquel.
That said, it basically plays the sound of youtube videos... which is really
nice, but it's not a real streaming service like
I don't think your proposal is wrong, I just think that it can't solve the
problem.
My proposal is a mixture of
1. your proposal (writing as many userscript replacements as possible)
2. stallman's proposal (trying to convince as many server owners to release
their code as free javascript; i
First of all, we don't talk about neither freedom nor privacy here. The
question we're discussing at the moment is:
Should we refuse to coorperate with somebody who keeps knowledge for herself?
Next, i want to stress that we'll never be sure what software actually runs
on mozilla's servers.
If we're fighting for different goals, sooner or later this will cause
problems. For instance, server owners might agree to remove certain functions
and our fellows who are concerned about security will get soothed this way -
we don't.
That said, i'm not happy with your unix comparison.
For me, Libreboot and Replicant come to mind.
They are both so damn important and have severe problems (replicant doesn't
support a single device with working wifi, libreboot is limited to very few
mainboards).
Besides, I immediately think of reverse engineering of wireless card
firmware.
First: merry christmas, or gravmass, or happy holiday in general to everyone!
Since Torbrowser improved a lot recently i found that i want to do most of my
normal webbrowsing with it. I do just uninteresting stuff nobody cares about,
but i consider it to be one of the biggest attacks on my
Wow, I can sign up an account with Tor!
I looked for something like this for the last years?
Thanks!
Since
1. you can use the service without any non-free software installed on your
computer
2. it's not SaaSS
3. the conversations are obviously end-to-end encrypted
the license of the software running on their servers is a minor concern.
It would be nice if they released the code, but it's not
Honestly, if rms talks about *practicle* problems with your approach, it's
really time to give it some serious thoughts.
That said, I think you are exaggerating the problem. I can't think of
any situation that requires interactivity in a Web page, and many
websites do work just fine as
Require in a technical sense like can't be done without javascript: none.
Require as in won't run today without javascript: an aweful lot.
I gave it some thought and agree with rms even more.
You're proposal is completely beyond any practicability.
Who is supposed to write all the replacements
That's right, and I still disagree with you; I already pointed out the
implications of your logic.
Do you want to require *any* webserver to free their code from now on?
You can't tell other people what software they run on their computers, and
you can't force them to share the code.
You
I guess most of you won't learn anything new with this speech, but it's
really worth watching rms giving a speech with slides:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbAr0VNIS1o
Personally, I think the slides improve his talk a lot. Also he seems to talk
more lively, maybe it's a bit of fresh air
For me, it doesn't even run.
It says that some config file wasn't found and gives a segmentation fault.
You don't need to run javascript at all in order to watch youtube videos.
Onpon4 made a tutorial how to do it:
https://goblinrefuge.com/mediagoblin/u/onpon4/m/tutorial-bypassing-youtube-javascript-requirements/
Be careful to call debian a floss system in here because thanks to the new
voting system, your post gets banned to limbo in no time :P
I'm speaking from personal experience!
Exactly, it's a contradiction. With non-free code, tails provides neither
freedom nor privacy - so it doesn't satisfy anyone except people who don't
know better and believe it makes them anonymous.
It *does* include non-free software. I guess you mean it doesn't include a
proprietary program on top of the kernel and that's right.
Clearly, the amount of proprietary code included in tails is very small.
But who is using tails? People who really want to stay anonymous, and some of
them
