Cool! and do you have any GNU/Linux games to play with? like NeverPutt and Tux Racer
Re: [Trisquel-users] i'm going to buy a Nintendo 64 lads.
the GameCube can run a pretty good amount amount of free software, such as GNU/Linux. i looked at the source code (git clone http://git.code.sf.net/p/gc-linux/gc-linux-2-git) and there are quite a few non-free firmwares as ihex files so its mostly free but still a lot of non-free firmware but i guess as the gamecube has no internet access this maby not bother you too much as its not a privacy issue
Re: [Trisquel-users] The FCC is asking for comments on a proposal to to lock down computing devices (routers, PCs, phones)
Is this a reply to my Proprietary software foundation joke?
Re: [Trisquel-users] i'm going to buy a Nintendo 64 lads.
And if no libre games run on it, which I think is probably the case, then the system is completely worthless as a system for freedom-respecting gaming, regardless. you can program your own software for it with free software https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/N64_Programming/Compiling but apart from the fun and nostalgia factor its not that useful but it has a max of 8mb of ram so getting gnu/linux to run on the n64 would be pretty awesome if anyone’s up to the task!
[Trisquel-users] know about a tor mail server?
http://5dgg7y5viysvvrxf.onion/ My reading is, that it is an email server that uses tor to provide anonymity. Do you have to use an email client? There is no tor browser web gui for writing and reading emails? I have created an account. Why cannot the server provide imap, but only pop? If you use an email client, your tor anonymity is enabled if you enter the tor server account data when you create an email client email account?

With these new FCC regulations would installing Replicant on a phone with a wifi card be illegal? or well installing free software on any computer with a wifi chip??? this is the impression i got from your blog: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/save-wifi-fcc-attempting-criminalize-freedom-new-regulations
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel for PowerPC
Because i think we should make trisquel for PowerPC. Replace AmigaOS with Trisquel.

Re: [Trisquel-users] know about a tor mail server?
I think you should use this OnionMail account with IceDove and TorBirdy addon. You'll have to start Tor service before with the RootTerminal by using this command (check if Tor is installed in synaptic) # sudo service tor start to stop it : # sudo service tor stop You can check if this works by sending you an email with your usual email account to your OnionMail account. TorBirdy can be slow by the experiment I had with it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What free email provider do you prefer?
I'd suggest setting up your own email on your own box if your so enabled. It is your best defence against getting wrapped up in *other* people legal issues. That is to say if they want access to email server X they need a warrant and will take it. If your on your own server they're not going to be able to go on a fishing expedition like they otherwise would. The one thing we can learn from Lavabit is that sometimes its best not to rely on others if at all possible.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel for PowerPC
Trisquel's upstream has PowerPC support. This makes things much simpler. :)

Re: [Trisquel-users] How translate the documentation to a non-enabled launguage
This site has already several languages. It would be nice to add more. Likely it would also be nice to add a few forums more. I asked for Italian forum to Quidam on IRC several times. He never answered. He answered to me immediately in November when I joined the Trisquel community back when I was asking for translator permission etc, but as far as the forums and wikis in other languages, I am not really sure what is his statement.. ata - if you know two of the languages that are enabled, translate the wiki from and to these ones. Send a mail to Ruben. Getting him on IRC is like getting Santa on a beach in July.. cheers
Re: [Trisquel-users] The FCC is asking for comments on a proposal to to lock down computing devices (routers, PCs, phones)
I don't have enough information to answer that question and I think a lawyer would have a difficult time giving you a straight answer too. And not just any lawyer but one involved in these types of cases with the FCC rules. So a specialized lawyer.

Re: [Trisquel-users] The FCC is asking for comments on a proposal to to lock down computing devices (routers, PCs, phones)
so as i am selling phones with Replicant pre-installed on them if this law is passed i would be unable to sell them as Replicant would give you control over the device? or just this law only apply to company’s making new hardware so they have to make the devices restrictive from the start?

Re: [Trisquel-users] The FCC is asking for comments on a proposal to to lock down computing devices (routers, PCs, phones)
www.savewifi.org You don't have to say much. Even basically copying and pasting what we've outlined should help. The goal is to get an overwhelming amount of support so they have to think twice. Right now they're writing off the community and those who will be impacted. They are required to do an assessment of the impact of the rule changes so the more people who object for *any* reason is likely to be useful in arguing they've failed to obey the law/there own rules.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The FCC is asking for comments on a proposal to to lock down computing devices (routers, PCs, phones)
Well- I believe this # was given to me in a response to a question I asked of those more knowledgeable and involved in the FCC details. That is there are lawyers, developers, and other technical types much more intimately involved/figuring it all out and I'm just grasping the jist of it enough to explain it less technical types. The larger rules are something like over a hundred pages if I'm not mistaken full of legal words that even the lawyers are unsure of what they mean (people who have dealt with this stuff in the past already). I'm more putting heads together and trying to get other people to figure it out, correct our understanding (ie the people who are helping with doing the promoting, creating the wiki page, etc). Now that we have put together a message (I helped a little), and overall figured out how we plan to tackle the problem I'm going to promote the heck out of it. Several prominent groups are at a minimum suppose to be working on blog posts at a minimum. We'll see what happens!
Re: [Trisquel-users] i'm going to buy a Nintendo 64 lads.
Of course, Game consoles are Jails. First off, You have A diffrent CPU. Secondly, Special connectors not found anywhere else (sometimes) Thirdly. Digital Restrictions Management (What the FSF calls DRM). You might as well play them on an emulator.

www.savewifi.org has a list of reasons for people to basically copy and paste why they object. Just look through it and decide what reasons you're objecting to it and copy them into the comment area. Even a one line I object because of privacy is *useful*.

There was such a large amount of traffic the other day libreplanet server got overloaded and went down. It's back up, but until I get confirmation that it's going to be able to handle the load I've temporarily directed the domain to a cached version of the page.

20,000 USD! do you have a source on that?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing a CA certificate authority system-wide
Could you at least provide messages that were shown to you, so I can determine what failed? Maybe you're not testing it properly. To test if you included the certificate you can try running this: curl https://www.autistici.org/en/stuff/man_ca/linux.html If you see an error message that means it failed. However if you see the source of the page it means it works.

I don't think creating a PowerPC build is a simple task. Debian already has a PowerPC build. Perhaps you could try that.

Re: [Trisquel-users] The FCC is asking for comments on a proposal to to lock down computing devices (routers, PCs, phones)
The technical and legal folks who scrutinized this basically said the rules were not totally clear. For instance what counts as an SDR? Just about everything now is SDR. The reality is this stuff is getting integrated such that you'd have to lock down everything on many of the devices shipping today. There are OS controlled components in these SDR or partial SDR chips. It appears what will eventually happen (maybe with future rules) is they'll require manufacturers to adopt 'hardware' signature checking tech from Intel. Intel's apparently designed there stuff to work on non-x86 third party platforms and what would happen is they'd license that out. This would ensure that users couldn't just get $100 worth of parts and bypass the signature checking by flashing the chip directly. Right now it sounds like manufacturers may be able to simply add signature checking to the firmware so that its munch more difficult to flash third party firmware (and would be illegal).

Re: [Trisquel-users] i'm going to buy a Nintendo 64 lads.
The Gamecube (with an add-on) can be hooked up with ethernet. GC-G/L (http://www.gc-linux.org/wiki/Main_Page) is the GNU/Linux I'm running on my GameCube. In this case, firmware isn't a privacy issue-- it's a freedom issue. Even if you hook up your GC to the internet, it's very unlikely there is any sort of phone-home backdoor in it's firmware. The GC has non-free firmware, but if you want an old console with GNU/Linux, it's probably the best. The better option, of course, would be to just hook a PC up to your TV-- a nice console-like one is the TP Wee Penguin.

i hope this works ! cause i dont want to buy an cumputer if i cant dualboot or install linux.
Re: [Trisquel-users] i'm going to buy a Nintendo 64 lads.
The way these old video game systems work is the cartridge has a program which is loaded into the system's RAM and then executed. This is installation. Temporary installation, but installation nonetheless. It's pretty much exactly the same as running a live system from a CD or DVD. DVDs work differently. What is on the DVD is primarily data, although video DVDs do have some instructions on them; I don't know for sure how much of a problem these instructions present. But the main software is whatever OS is running on the DVD player. In fact, if you talk to RMS, the only reason he pretty much completely ignored video games is because he (incorrectly) assumed that it was a minor, unimportant activity. Every correspondence I have had with him on the topic of these video games has shown quite clearly that he considers these old video games to be just as unethical as any other proprietary program.

Re: [Trisquel-users] The FCC is asking for comments on a proposal to to lock down computing devices (routers, PCs, phones)
No, probably not (well, maybe if you ship the USA.. unsure... you would need to ask a lawyer that question), but your not going to be able to continue getting routers going forward that you can 1. easily flash 2. are at all flashable. Right now you'll just find it becoming more difficult to flash the routers. Later when companies start implementing hardware-based signature checks it'll be impossible (probably).

Re: [Trisquel-users] i'm going to buy a Nintendo 64 lads.
Free software is about _control_ over your _computing_. In my view, retro gaming consoles may technically be computers, but I don't use them that way; i don't do computing with them - i don't do any tasks besides playing the game like an interactive movie. RMS once pointed out that nowadays, some microwave ovens may be computers in a technical sense, but they are not used as a computers, neither can you upgrade the system or install software on it, so in his view it's not a problem. I think the same holds for retro consoles. You use them like a dvd player - you put in the game, press start, that's it. If I see the games as pieces of media (why wouldn't I?), it is perfectly possibly nowadays to copy and share the games in the community, though it's maybe not legal, just as with dvds. The consoles have no way to work in a malicious way, they have no camera, no internet connection, no data of mine, not even a harddisc. For me, the remaining freedom issues are so theoretical and minor that it's out of question to give away a world full of excellent masterpieces of game-history for that.
