[Trisquel-users] Re : trisquel 6
;-) I am switching back to Trisquel 7 and will follow the advice to install .deb packages. I did not mean install everything via .deb packages, most software is available in the Trisquel repositaries with your Synaptic Package Manager. a .deb package exemple is you can install the latest Firejail .deb package(https://firejail.wordpress.com/), but not Ring, because Ring no longer makes available a less recent version for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS derivatives.(https://ring.cx/en/download/gnu-linux). Debian has an armada of developpers, whereas Trisquel is a very small team. There are numerous threads about Debian here, https://www.gnu.org/distros/common-distros.html#Debian Explaining Why We Don't Endorse Other Systems https://trisquel.info/fr/forum/getting-debian-fsf-approved

Re: [Trisquel-users] Having trouble with Japanese input, ibus-anthy, no Hiragana even with switch
Sorry for all the noise. I have solved this. Here are instructions encase someone finds this thread: install ibus-anthy In System Settings, find language support, add Japanese launch ibus-setup ->click customize an input method ->under Japanese find the submenu, Japanese-Anthy. Do NOT select Japanee alone

Re: [Trisquel-users] trisquel 6
Thanks a lot SuperTramp83 and Mangy Dog. I've got your points. I didn't wanted to touch a sensible cord here. I think it was understood from my initial post that I'm asking for advice and points of reference so I can increase my knowledge on the subject. I used this forum for pointers because I personally think you cannot get better answers in any other place. I just wanted to see, from people with way more experience on what does it mean to be free, how is the sensation. How heavy is the burden ? What things I need to understand in order to be 100% free ? One of the things I've discovered as a freedom trainee was that it is not very easy to be free and I think this is also one of the main frustration of the community. If more people would be interested on this subject, then the dream to be 100% free and don't suffer from any restrictions, because you've chosen freedom, would be so much closer to becoming reality. I am switching back to Trisquel 7 and will follow the advice to install .deb packages. Thanks again for all of your help.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Having trouble with Japanese input, ibus-anthy, no Hiragana even with switch
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I had this error on the old install and the fresh one too: ** (main.py:2928): WARNING **: Couldn't connect to accessibility bus: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-2jSHfAoFaW: Connection refused I am not sure if ibus is using posix sockets and this is related
[Trisquel-users] Having trouble with Japanese input, ibus-anthy, no Hiragana even with switch
Hi Everyone I really need to have Japanese input on my computer. I had an old installation of Trisquel from about a year ago. I got things working but after I restarted I could not get things to work again. I have just freshly installed 7.0 Gnome 64 bit. I have run updates and installed VLC and Icedove but no other application other then ibus-anthy otherwise so I pretty much have a clean install. I ran ibus-setup.These are the changes: I added Japanese I clicked use system keyboard layout clicked show icon in system tray show property panel to always. Under System Settings I clicked on Language and Support. I added Japanese and left keyboard input as ibus. Things are weird. If I type meta space and hold space for a second a icon pops up showing the keyboard switching between Japanese and English . If I type ibus-daemon, I get: current session already has an ibus-daemon. Something is switching. If I go to Japanese the special keys like @, # etc all work differently but when I type: "wa" I just get wa, it does not switch to hiragana or Kanji. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong, I feel I am so close but I am also stuck. Thanks for reading-Patrick
Re: [Trisquel-users] I noticed that trisquel beta is out.
interesting, what does this page mean then? https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/documentation it says there are fresh beta images on documentation. scroll down and you will see it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems with Trimage Image compressor. It lacks of 2 libraries. please help!.
When you installed trimage, you already installed pngcrush, and also zlib1g, and libpng12-0. No need to install again. :) If I'm not mistaken, pngcrush can only have .png images as results. No .jpg. [Trisquel-users] Problems with Trimage Image compressor. It lacks of 2 libraries. please help!.
Hi, I easily installed "Trimage" from "Graphics" repositories, and I m using 32 bits trisquel belenos. It did not work, nothing happens when draggin or selecting pictures, just screen remains white and "recompress" greyed out, and sometimes a message "queued" appears. I try to compress an image by running a command and it seems I find why it does not work with GUI: trimage -f uncompressed.jpg --file=optimized.jpg and it reports: pngcrush 1.7.65, uses libpng 1.2.49 and zlib 1.2.8 Check http://pmt.sf.net/ for the most recent version. [error] optimized.jpg not a supported image file and/or not writeable So I try to install these libraries and I got these error messages: with zlib: sudo apt-get install zlib1g-dev reports: The following packages have unmet dependencies: zlib1g-dev : Depende: libc6-dev pero no va a instalarse o libc-dev Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. with libpng: after getting content ( wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/libpng/libpng-1.5.4.tar.gz ) and uncompressing the tar file I cd to the directory where I got everything and then I run: ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/libpng and it reports: checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c checking whether build environment is sane... yes checking for a thread-safe mkdir -p... /bin/mkdir -p checking for gawk... gawk checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes checking whether to enable maintainer-specific portions of Makefiles... no checking for gcc... no checking for cc... no checking for cl.exe... no configure: error: in `/home/gwx/Descargas/libpng': configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH See `config.log' for more details So I cannot have any of the required libraries. How could I solve my problem with Trimage?. Thanks in advance to those who could say something back!:).
Re: [Trisquel-users] I noticed that trisquel beta is out.
You can run Trisquel 8 without systemd as init, e.g. when you upgrade from Trisquel 7 to 8(using upstart). But there are some dependencies with certain packages like dnscrypt (probably more). At some point i couldnt shut down anymore... Not sure if systemd is good or bad, it works on Trisquel 8. I just have a weird feeling about it.
[Trisquel-users] Re : I noticed that trisquel beta is out.
could be close to beta now. But it isn't beta until the developer says so. Exact!
Re: [Trisquel-users] I noticed that trisquel beta is out.

[Trisquel-users] Mastodon, SystemD and Trisquel 8 Alpha
I would like to set up a Mastodon instance using the Trisquel 8 alpha. I need SystemD and probably other things that Trisquel 8 has as a foundation. Should I upgrade my Trisquel 7 install for this? I'm guessing probably not recommended? If not, maybe run Trisquel 8 in a VM and host that way?
Re: [Trisquel-users] I noticed that trisquel beta is out.
Trisquel 8 is in Beta? I see no proof of this...
Re: [Trisquel-users] trisquel 6
I'm still using trisquel 6 and love it.
[Trisquel-users] Re : trisquel 6
You are correct, and i am aware of that ;-) https://trisquel.info/fr/issues/20634 You could add Icedove or .deb packages that are not installable (dependancies) on Trisquel 7 like the recently mentioned Rings. Trisquel 8 Beta with more recent software has been released, we should encourage new users try it out.
Re: [Trisquel-users] trisquel 6
It's still getting updates, both from Trisquel project, and from upstream.
Re: [Trisquel-users] trisquel 6
>How can people not running Trisquel say they receive no updates of Trisquel ;-) umm ? I did not say updates, I said **timely security updates**. Trisquaello not receiving those updates is a very well known fact here. There's no need to use the OS to be aware of it, especially if you visit this forum once or twice each day, which I do, being that I like this forum, as strange as it may seem to you knowing I've been using Debian for the last 3 years. Look for Midori and Pidgin for instance, just to name a few.

[Trisquel-users] Re : trisquel 6
How can people not running Trisquel say they receive no updates of Trisquel ;-) umm ? Debian Fans ... Any fresh install of Trisquel 7 has updates, if you aren't getting updates then something is wrong.. the best way is to open a terminal and update your system $ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade If you want more recent software you can install and try the latest Trisquel 8 Betaversion. http://jenkins.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso/ or Uruk GNU/Linux 2.0 (Alpha)as dicussed here https://trisquel.info/fr/forum/uruk-gnulinux-20-alpha

Re: [Trisquel-users] Evolution RSS Reader Plugin
Hmm. Install 'automake' and try autoconf before the other commands. sudo apt-get install automake then autoconf ./configure make sudo make install
Re: [Trisquel-users] trisquel 6
Hmm, I see. 7 is buggy on your hardware. It happens :/ Backup your data then and use 6 or try any other free distro, there are a few out there. https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html There's even more. Debian by default is 100% libre (just make sure to keep it that way, that is check the license of anything you install outside of it's only repository, 'main', which contains only free software). Fedora can be easily made 100% libre by installing a libre linux kernel and removing the default kernel it ships with. cheers
Re: [Trisquel-users] help needed to hardware flash Gigabyte GA-G41M-ESL2
I don't have the equipment to desolder the chips. Maybe it is cheaper to buy a new board :( I already have a quality cooler for my Q9650.
Re: [Trisquel-users] help needed to hardware flash Gigabyte GA-G41M-ESL2
This board is hard to flash externally. I recommend desoldering both chips. Default chips are unfriendly with flashing, you should buy new SPI chips with more space. WHen you have desoldered both chips, take new one and flash libreboot into it, when SPI chip is desoldered, maybe you need to connect 2 additional wires to V (PSU 3v wire), and these additional wires (2 wires, from SPU 3v, so in total you will have "3wires x 3v") connect to both NC when you flash the chip. You only need one chip, you do not need to solder backup chip.
[Trisquel-users] help needed to hardware flash Gigabyte GA-G41M-ESL2
Hi, I tested around with my board and to make it short it does not boot anymore. So the only way to get it working again is to hardware flash it. On the libreboot website a beaglebone board is recommended to flash and there is also some documentation: https://libreboot.org/docs/install/ga-g41m-es2l.html "You can only externally reprogram one of the chips at a time, and you need to disable the chip that you’re not flashing, by connecting 3v3 to /CS of that chip, so you will actually need 2 test clips (you also need to connect GND on the chip that you’re disabling)." What does connecting 3v3 means and what is /CS?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Evolution RSS Reader Plugin
This seems to be a bug in Ubuntu 14.04 (assuming you are having an issue with this plugin in Trisquel 7): https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution-rss/+bug/1296701
Re: [Trisquel-users] trisquel 6
Thanks for the replies ! @SuperTramp83: I've noticed that sometimes in Trisquel 7 the key strokes are not identified. It's not because of the keyboard because it's not behaving similar in Trisquel 6 for example or any other OSes I've had on this machine. Also the feeling is like the system is not getting the IRQ. Beside that annoying thing that practically forces you to sometimes hit twice a key, the system also randomly freezez when performing some simple tasks. For example it froze when copying from a USB. All those combined with my nostalgic personality makes me stick with 6. I don't have data very very important it's just important for me. For example I always document a process when I'm doing it for the first time (exp. setting up SPF and DKIM), so the HDD it's full of these kind of howtos. The behaviours described might be due to the fact I've selected the generic kernel during installation. I didn't found documentation on that topic so I've went with that option. If Trisquel is not an option at this moment, what are your alternatives ? Thank you !
Re: [Trisquel-users] Monitoring desktop temperature with Trisquel
For anyone with the same issue, forgetit if you have a specific AMD CPU. Check archwiki's lm-sensor page for the k10temp tweak, which didn't work for me. Even if it would have worked, it would be inaccurate. So I'll get a rhebus with a probe on the CPU indicating the proper temp. Bonus, I'll be able to manually control all the fans. Case closed for me.
