I had the same issue and resolved it by downloading the latest version of Thunderbird. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/installing-thunderbird-linux I'm new to GNU/Linux as well and could easily be wrong, but it's my understanding that the the Mozilla branding issue has been resolved

Additional info: --no-install-recommends might be the culprit. It seems it is to be used sparingly, not all the time. I'd have to reinstall to be sure thoughn because even removing myself from the input group works just fine now.
