[TV orNotTV] Three LA TV Stations Can't Get LA Hockey Current Team Logo Right

2012-05-20 Thread Joe Hass
The Los Angeles Kings are playing in the NHL Western Conference Finals
(think Final Four of pro hockey).

You can see their logo at http://kings.nhl.com/

On Tuesday night, the NBC affiliate had a story about the three LA
teams in their respective playoffs.

This was the graphic they had over Chuck Henry's shoulder:
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/nbc-los-angeles-thinks-la-kings-sacramento-kings-044945696.html

That would be the *Sacramento* Kings logo. First clue: the use of the
word Sacramento in the logo.

On Friday night, the Fox affiliate was talking about the five games at
Staples Center over the weekend.

This was the graphic they used: http://ow.ly/i/DpVw

That would be the logo the team last used in *1993*.

Saturday, the ABC affiliate was covering the three events at Staples
Center on Sunday (there's a big biking event plus a Kings game plus a
Clippers game).

This was the graphic they used:
https://twitter.com/#!/Kingfluffy/status/204000523270107137/photo/1

That would be the alternate logo, which used to be the primary logo,
but was changed at least two years ago.

To be fair, journalism is hard.

If they were to rely on that site for the logo, I'm not surprised they
(probably) went Google Image searching and wound up using the Sac Kings, or
the 1990 Kings or the Kings Dominion logos. I didn't realize they had a
logo at the top of the page until I scrolled down to see a similar shape
used for the merchandising link. Though I assume they shouldn't have to use
the website to get a logo, as they should have the recent press kit
somewhere to reference.

I can speak from experience here; MLB and the NFL have nice,
extensively stocked press sites, including bitmap and vector graphics
of all the team logos, logos for special games (Super Bowl, All-Star
Game, etc.), color specifications, and everything a graphic artist
could ever ask for. As far as I've been able to find (and admittedly
it's been a couple years since I went looking), neither the NHL nor
NBA have anything similar. You're pretty much on your own. When I
needed the new Pistons logo a couple of years ago, it was easy enough
to download a .PDF of their press kit, open it in Illustrator and find
the vector version of their logo. But that takes work, and most local
news people (even those in the second largest market) seem to be
allergic to work.

[TV orNotTV] Wiig's SNL Swan Song

2012-05-20 Thread Michael
I am aware of the disdain thrown in Kristen Wiig's direction by
certain TVONTV-ers, but her final go as a cast member on SNL was a
genereally entertaining affair for at least one of us who enjoys her
work. And it was a pretty fair episode in a wildly uneven season for
the series. Host Mick Jagger was game for anything and generally did
not embarrass himself in the sketches - even at his advanced age. (I
think a gypsy family could be living in those creases on his face.)
His musical segments benefited from teaming him with two terrific
bands, Arcade Fire and Foo Fighters, on classic Stones tunes, not to
mention a throwaway blues number done with the great Jeff Beck on
guitar. Jon Hamm dropped by to do the recurring Lawrence Welk skit,
Chris Parnell returned for a Lazy Sunday 2 digital video rap with
Andy Samberg. (Not as funny as the first time they did it.) There was
a Steve Martin cameo in the labored Californians skit. And the last
scene was a tearful farewell to Wiig by the entire cast and head
honcho Lorne, choreographed to the Stones' She's a Rainbow. Even ex-
cast members Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch and Chris Kattan were on stage
for the sign-off. Nice, if not as poignant as Phil Hartman's Sound of
Music farewell to the show, or as antic as Tina Fey and Jimmy
Fallon's good-bye Grease parody. No confirmation as yet on who else
might not return to SNL next season, although Jason Sudekis and
Samberg have been mentioned as possibly moving on to other things.
Then again, neither of them has yet to garner an Oscar nom like Wiig.

There was a tacit admission that Samberg wouldn't be returning, as mentioned
in LS2: That's how it began, and that's how I'm-a finish it.
(Although -- according to Wikipedia -- LS1 was actually the second Digital

Outside of her and Bill Murray, are there any other SNLers to preface
their names with Academy Award nominee?

I'd argue that Desperate Housewives had a similarly good ending. Yes, the

I've now watched the week of Scotland shows. I approve of them
overall. I probably enjoyed the Wednesday installment the best, and
would liken it to the closest we'll see to Craig's version of Johnny
Comes Home, which I doubt many remember but I enjoyed.

My criticism would be that when talk shows go to Chicago, they have to
get Oprah as a guest. If they go to Vegas, they get a Wayne Newton.
Craig failed to get either Sean Connery or Billy Connelly. Don't get
me wrong, I've heard Fred MacAulay on BBC4 for years and it was cool
seeing what he looked like, but one of the two known Scottish names
seemed a given and it didn't happen.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Three LA TV Stations Can't Get LA Hockey Current Team Logo Right

2012-05-20 Thread Kevin M.
A few things: To my knowledge, none of the local affils or OOs have
sports editors anymore. A few of the stations don't even have sports
anchors anymore. Most are operating with between 40 to 60 percent of
the staff they used to have, and many of the low rungs on the ladder
have to begun their days with the drop-ins during the Today show (or
other morning shows) and don't leave until the 11pm newscasts end.
Also, if you count the Ducks, we have two LA hockey teams, but the
vast majority doesn't care about either unless they make the playoffs.
In short, complaining about LA hockey coverage is a bit like
complaining about the quality of food or service at a Denny's.

skipping. And I was thinking — in most cases, I would think that was a

A: Yeah. She was just being herself. She didn’t mean anything by it.

Q: It was such a great exchange — and then later on, when you started
talking really seriously. That was one of things where I got the sense
that, without the cameras, without the crew, you would have had pretty
much the same conversation at that exact second.

A: Oh, no doubt. That’s why I asked Mila to come, because she’s one
of the few people that have got the cojones to do that. That’s really
why we ran it as an eight-minute, unedited shot — a single shot for
the entire thing, which, of course, you never see on television. We
ran it like that — it’s fine. The crew is getting in the way in the
background, and the P.A. is running between the gravestones, and I’m
like, ‘Fine. Fuck them. Leave it in.’ It looks good. People aren’t
stupid. They know what that is.

Because the longer you stay on one shot, the more the honesty becomes
apparent. And I think you’re right. Mila was just being herself.

Last Tuesday was always listed as two hours, with the finale of Fashion
Star at 10.

Tomorrow night is one hour, because Ninja Warrior is moving over from G4
for the summer at 9 (didn't they do that last summer?).

Tuesday, it's an hour at 9. A repeat of the Monday ep is at 8 and the
Dateline 20th anniversary special is at 10. Rejoice, Chris Hansen fans!

Re: [TV orNotTV] Late Late Show in Scotland

2012-05-20 Thread David Bruggeman
Connery also doesn't live in Scotland, as was noted during SCG's interview with
Scotland's First Minister.I'm not sure where Connelly's living these days, he
may be in the States.

The guest bookings for Paris were, IMO, similarly tied to whom was available
and interesting to Craig.  The biggest 'get' then was either Jean Reno or
Jean-Michel Cousteau.

Should Craig do his next road trip to an American city, I would still expect
the guest list to reflect this perspective.

Craig failed to get either Sean Connery or Billy Connelly. Don't get
me wrong, I've heard Fred MacAulay on BBC4 for years and it was cool
seeing what he looked like, but one of the two known Scottish names
seemed a given and it didn't happen.

Sure, because when we think about Ferguson's show, we think about
big-name and appropriate guests.

More seriously, Connelly was on the show in Los Angeles in the
not-too-distant past, and I'm pretty sure we're never going to see
Connery in public again.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Wiig's SNL Swan Song

2012-05-20 Thread David Bruggeman
Answers.com adds Randy Quaid, nominated for The Last Detail in 1973.  It
would seem that Wiig's nod is unique in that it occurred while she was on the
show, while most of the others were post-SNL (Quaid and Coe having received
their nods pre-SNL).  It's also unique in being a writing nod (at least for a
performer, I'm not up to speed on Oscar nods for SNL writers).

As for my lack of interest in Wiig, it comes from not liking any of her
characters.  I don't respond much to funny that comes from awkward or annoying,
and that seems to be her wheelhouse.

I don't hate Wiig, but I think she was *way* over exposed on SNL for a
couple of years (less so this season), and they relied much to much on
recurring bits from here that were far to thin to sustain the weight. They
really gave her a workout this week, which is fine I suppose, though seemed
a bit of a diss for the other cast members who are leaving. Still, the
emotion did seem genuine, and the end was nice.

There is a kind of standing role on SNL for a female workshorse, who can be
in several skits a week, develop recurring characters, and basically bring
some of what they used to call watercooler moments to the show. Working
with the SNL cast list from wikipedia, I have put together my first draft
of the women who have filled this role over the history of SNL:

A. Gilda Radner 1975 – 1980

B. Mary Gross 1981 – 1985 (I can't remember - I am giving the nod to Gross,
but perhaps it would have been Robin Duke from this cast?)

C. Jan Hooks 1986 – 1991

D. Julia Sweeney 1990 – 1994

E. Cheri Oteri 1995 – 2000

F. Amy Poehler 2001 – 2008

F. Kristen Wiig 2005 – 2012

I have left off lots of funny SNL women, who either were only on the show
1-3 years, or played what I think was a different kind of role on the show.

For my money Jan Hooks is a close second on this list only to Gilda Radner,
who I suppose there is no way not to make #1. I would Pohler #3. I am maybe
more of a Hooks fan than some, but it is hard for me to see many who have
observed the show over the entire length of its run disagreeing that these
are the top 3 female workhorse performers. Wiig is not in their league, but
she is in the next level, and I would put her with Cheri Oteri (another
performer who can divide a room pretty good between fans and haters). Like
Oteri, Wiig seems to have a rather limited range, so that we kind of got
the same thing from her across characters. Oteri worked with a lot of
strong male cast members, while Wiig sometimes had almost the full weight
of several seasons on her shoulders, so I would probably place Wiig ahead
of Oteri. In my book Sweeny and Gross (who probably do not even really
belong in this category, except I am identifying them as the strongest
female long term performers from their era) bring up the rear.

Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis have also been reported to be
leaving SNL, though Michaels recently said any decision on cast
changes will wait until the summer.

In other words, no one besides Wiig is confirmed to be leaving after
this last season. Andy, probably, based on the last line in his video;
Jason, I suspect, will stick around for more Romney and Biden segments.
