[TV orNotTV] Re: New Trek will be a view from proverbial gallery

My suspicions appear to be off.  Kevin's instincts seem spot on.

While I can't rule it out, I suspect the event will be something else.  As the
Romulans were unseen before their first appearance in the original series, it
would be tough to pull off.

My guess would be a battle or conflict between the Klingons and the Federation,
as the new show is taking place shortly before the Organian Peace Treaty was
imposed on both sides.
While the talk for this series at one point was that each season would be a
different setting and cast of characters (like American Horror Story or True
Detective), it's starting to sound more like each season will be a season-long
story involving the crew of the Discovery.
It's probably just me, but with casting still underway, the turnaround for a
January debut strikes me as really short.

The series will be centered around a female lead who is not the captain, set a
decade before the original series, and will take place in the "prime" universe,
not the JJ universe.

Though they don't say it, I suspect the Romulan War will be the focus.

Being the second Trek on BBCA makes it just a little less weird.
But if the Emmy people thought Picard was British, maybe someone at BBCA
thought the same thing.

By the way, the best argument against this is the Academy's track

they pick the Best Documentary nominees.

[TV orNotTV] BBCA adding to its Trek offerings

2016-09-08 Thread 'David Bruggeman' via TVorNotTV
This may be a one-time deal connected with the 50th anniversary (today) of the
television debut of Star Trek, but BBC America is airing episodes from the
first series for the first time.  The episodes start tonight at 8:30 (the same
time the original series debuted) and are going to be uncut (but with
commercials) versions of the remastered episodes.  If you can't wait for 8:30,
the channel is currently running Next Generation episodes that feature the
original series cast.

The run is strictly season one and two, and will air in broadcast order.  After
one run through both seasons (interrupted in the wee hours by the same Next
Generation repeats as this afternoon), BBCA will re-air what it considers the
best episodes from the first two seasons (I wouldn't argue with their choices,
but YMMV).  That should start Sunday night.

This might be the first time these episodes have been available on TV in the US
since about 2009, right after the remastered episodes were first released.

All good points - but lets keep in mind that, despite the whining of Mr.
Bassing (who got into the Academy by his own admission with far fewer
credits than many of those who have for these many decades been excluded),
the Academy is not actually just kicking out old white men. It is purging
its membership of people who have not been active in any way for a long

Kelly is going into contract renewal negotiations and she's making it clear
how much power she's got.

The problem of introducing diversity in hiring or membership is one that
many companies and organizations are facing today. The organization will
recognize that their membership is not diverse and make a motion or make an
internal decision that they they need to increase diversity. The motion or
decision are applauded by the current membership and then nothing happens.
It turns out that good intentions are not enough to solve the problems.
Eventually diversifying the membership is made a priority and then it turns
out that new diverse people are going to have to replace current people (in
leadership if there are no limits to the number of members). So while
everybody wants diversity, when it becomes a reality, somebody is going to
lose his or her privileges. The Academy is not the first or only
organization to deal with these tensions and AFAIK there is no universal
answer.

I empathize with Mr. Bassing. At his age he is looking for any opportunity
to feel that he can be useful and play a part.

Looking at it from the point of view of the other work that the
Academy does besides the awards shows, the older members
may be current donors or plan to leave bequests of money,
films, memorabilia, etc to the film archive, library and/or
new museum. Older members are more likely to be the
people who have the time to volunteer in various capacities
to support these Academy activities including their educational
programs and support for new young filmmakers.
Based on personal experience with volunteer organizations
that my parents or I have belonged to, it's not a good idea
to dump or ignore members, especially active members,
just because of age.
