Re: [TV orNotTV] Andy Cohen completes investigation, to resume "WWHL"

In her stand-up act, Kathy Griffin claims that Cohen twice offered her
cocaine (asking her a second time after she turned down the first). It
seems unlikely that Glanville and McSweeney are not telling the truth.

Oh no. If I weren’t traveling at the moment, I’d probably have more to say.

Clay and Ruben were recognized immediately by a couple of fans who watch the
show regularly.

Everyone is just relieved that we never have to watch the show again.

Next TV appearance that we know of: with son on Celebrity Family Feud.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Another Hollywood catfight

2024-04-19 Thread Melissa P
I think Sweeney did a really nice job in the movie* Reality*. It's good to
see her trying to stretch her acting chops by taking on a role so obviously
outside her comfort zone.

She's obviously a very attractive young lady, but I think her best feature
is her smile; it makes her onscreen appearance truly appealing.

Other than *Reality*, I think I've only seen her on SNL and on NBC
promoting SNL.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Dan Schneider denies toxic-workplace claims as docu on Nick situation airs

2024-03-26 Thread Melissa P
I don't believe I've ever watched anything on Nickelodeon, and my only
familiarity with Schneider is *Head of the Class*, which I did watch.

But since he's a graduate of my high school, the subject may be discussed
on the Facebook page, and I should know what's being talked about. So,
I've now set the DVR to pick up the series.

If Kathy Bates, also a graduate of my high school, becomes embroiled in
scandal, I'll be watching that, too -- and more enthusiastically.

Re: [TV orNotTV] So long, Steve Lawrence

2024-03-10 Thread Melissa P
Last December I happened to notice in the daily *Washington Post* TV
listing that Maryland Public Television was showing a special on Steve and
Eydie. I hadn't given the duo much thought in decades, but they were a
staple of my childhood TV-watching. So, I set the DVR to pick up the
program. I watched it a couple of weeks ago. It's one of the best of this
type of PBS special I've seen. Entire performances from the variety shows
they did and many clips from a recent interview of Carol Burnett. If it's
shown in your area, I highly recommend it.

Re: [TV orNotTV] 'SNL' Origin Story Movie May Be Coming

2024-01-20 Thread Melissa P
SNL's problem has always been good writing (even in the early days), LOTS
of consistently good writing.

Also, experience outweighs youth in my opinion.

I'm reminded of a taping of* Everyone Loves Raymond* I attended. I got to
tell Phil Rosenthal that one particular episode was one the finest sitcom
episodes I had ever seen. He identified the writer of that episode who was
congregating with the show's other writers. He was probably twice the age
of anyone else on the writing team. In this society, we seem to dismiss
too quickly the value of experience.

I'm not sure if anyone remembers, but I think I posted here an SNL sketch
that actually made me laugh, the first time in years. The setting was a
Waffle House. When I was in Memphis last month, the local lead news story
was shootings at two Waffle Houses. I had been to both of them.

Gosh, Kevin, there's so much we're not teaching kids these days, starting
with being able to separate fact from fiction, civics, and instilling in
them the value of expertise. (The Supreme Court is about to do away with
the latter.)

Re: [TV orNotTV] Maher to Calif. governor: "Why didn't you take a more active role in resolving the strikes?"

2024-01-20 Thread Melissa P
Here's what I don't like about Maher:

1. His spreading of misinformation about covid (and before that, promoting
non-science based medicine).

2. His fat-shaming -- although I don't think he's done it yet this season.

3. Most recently, his conversation with Congressman Dean Phillips of
Minnesota who's running to defeat Biden in the Democratic primary. Maher
mentioned that others have noted a resemblance between him and Phillips and
mentioned that Phillips is Jewish -- without also mentioning that his
mother was Jewish. He should have added that fact to the conversation.

That said, I watch *Real Time* every week, for two reasons: (1) It has the
best writing staff of late night comedy show, and (2) It often makes me
think, even when I don't like what's being said.

Finally, the Governor is really good looking.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Young Sheldon spinoff to feature Georgie and Mandy

2024-01-14 Thread Melissa P
The Georgie/Mandy relationship quickly became the jump-the-shark moment in
the series for me. So, I doubt the spin-off will appeal to me.

I wonder what Iain Armitage will do next. I saw him frequently when he was
probably 3-5 and was hanging out at the Signature Theater, during its Open
House every August and when his dad was performing there (I got to talk
with his dad once while he was keeping an eye on Iain). I think the last
time I saw him was when Signature was doing a benefit, and he was
introduced as just starting to play the lead in Young Sheldon.

I'm not going to be terribly helpful, but I admired the work in *The Good

Speaking of theater, as an aside, I had both my best and worst theater

the worst: * A Girl from the North Country*.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: ItllBeOnTV: Subject of Sandy Bullock movie says adopted family swindled him

2023-08-20 Thread Melissa P
A bit of background that's never included in the story:

Not relevant, I assume.

Briarcrest Baptist High School -- the school in the film -- was established
when busing started in Memphis -- as a place for White students to flee
public schools. White teachers, as well as White students, left the public
schools to avoid desegregation.

The turmoil occurred during my final years of high school, and I remember
it well.

So, I can't watch the movie and not think of that time when Briarcrest
became the option for the younger siblings of my friends. (I graduated two
years before the changes took place.)

A few years ago, I had lunch with one of my classmates whose husband had
applied to be an assistant golf coach at the school; he was turned down
because he wasn't the right kind of Christian.

I think it's an important part of the school's history -- that should never
be ignored or forgotten -- but obviously the movie's producers didn't see
it that way.

He was the reason I became addicted to soap operas when I was in high

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: "Kat" put down

2023-05-07 Thread Melissa P
Agree with you completely. And, I'm a cat person. In other words, there's
never been a time in my life when I didn't have a cat. (People assume I
have multiple cats; I have only one; as an adult, I've never had more than
one at a time.)

So, naturally, I tuned into the first episode and have seen many of them
since. A problem for the show, for me, at least, was that the cats got
only a second or two of airtime.

But it's a really awful show. Not only is it not funny, it has an icky
vibe to it.

Yes, as marvelous as Leslie Jordan was (I followed his career for years,
really enjoyed his one-man show, and even got to chat with him a couple of
times), even he couldn't produce laughs if the writers couldn't deliver,
and they couldn't.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Bill Maher kisses Elon Musk's butt better than Joe Rogan

2023-05-02 Thread Melissa P
Well, I'm one of those dozen. And, so is a friend. We went to Maher's
show recently at the MGM in National Harbor, Maryland.

But -- here are the parts of his act that I hate:

1. Covid nonsense
2. Telling kids they don't need to go to college, and
3. Fat shaming

But Maher has the best writers working today, and I have great admiration
and appreciation for them even though I wish he would just shut up about
1, 2, and 3. Oh, and he's probably not a nice person in real life.

The Musk interview was mostly unintelligible.

Re: [TV orNotTV] SortaNoTV: 'Smash' May Make It to Broadway

2023-03-22 Thread Melissa P
I was a big fan of the series -- bought all of the music and even managed
to attend the one night only concert version of the series in New York in
2015, which was superb.

Initially, when it was first talked about, the broadway production was
supposed to be *Bombshell*, the musical within the musical, but,
fortunately that plan got canned.

I doubt any of the original cast will be on stage. Oddly enough, I saw
both Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee in concert this year (at different
times).

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: RIP Barbara Walters

2023-01-05 Thread Melissa P
I'm sure she must be the reason I continue to watch The Today Show.

Because when I was growing up, my father appreciated seeing a successful
Jewish woman on TV.

I assume I'll always have The Today Show habit. When I was in New York
recently, I hung out on the Plaza and even had my picture taken with Hoda,
Savannah, and Craig. Wish I had remembered to thank Savannah for her
"crazy uncle" reference to Trump.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Visiting the Ed this week

2022-11-03 Thread Melissa P
In ALL of my experience (West Coast, East Coast, doesn't matter), audience
waiting has ALWAYS been an unpleasant experience. Back in July 2021, a
woman standing about 5 people behind me fainted and an ambulance came and
got her. One would think that might have been an incentive to get the
audience out of the heat and at least in the air-conditioned lobby, but
nope, the incident didn't change the Late Show's audience procedures at
all. We waited in the heat some more.

However, a few years ago -- the last time I attended sitcom tapings in LA
-- there was a bright spot. At Warner Brothers, audiences were handled in
the parking garage and there were benches for us to sit on to preserve line
order. Doesn't sound like much, but it was actually a major improvement.

One of the guests last night was Ernie Moniz? Back when he worked in the
Obama White House, Dr. Moniz was a reviewer of the publication I helped
prepare. One of my colleagues was called over to the Old Executive Office
Building -- specifically to explain purchasing power parities to him. Just
a memorable incident from my past.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Visiting the Ed this week

2022-10-31 Thread Melissa P
Coincidentally, I have a ticket for next Wednesday's Late Show taping!

However, I'm on the fence about using it. I have tickets for musicals
Tuesday evening and Wednesday evening -- and was planning to try at TKTS
for a Wednesday matinee. I realized that if I go to a matinee, I probably
won't be able to make the Colbert line. Not sure what I will do. I wonder
what the latest is that I could make it to Colbert? For example, if the
matinee was over by 4:30, would I be able to make it?

Unlike the sitcom tapings I used to attend in LA where I was always one of
the few audience members wanting to ask a question, there were lots of
hands raised when I was at Colbert In July 2021. So, I had little chance
of being called on -- and I wasn't. Sorry, I cannot remember the question
I planned to ask. Or -- maybe it was my old standard (I've never been able
to ask). "What guest have you really wanted to have on and neither a staff
member -- nor you -- were successful in getting that person on the show?"

Re: [TV orNotTV] "Big Bang" book: Cuoco not first choice for Penny

2022-10-19 Thread Melissa P
Responding to this post has been on my to-do list. Sorry it's taken me so
long to get to it.

I'll be getting and reading the book in the near future.

A couple of scenes of the second pilot were filmed on a Saturday when I
happened to be in Los Angeles (for another reason). Only Jim and Johnny
were in the scenes, but Kaley was on the set and introduced to the
audience. I don't think Simon and Kunal had been cast yet.

I got to see the show being filmed one more time (before its popularity
skyrocketed) and was able to offer a storyline suggestion to Bill Prady; I
could tell that he thought it had merit. I was thrilled later on that
season to see my idea used in a storyline.

Despite knowing someone who knew the science advisor on the show, I
couldn't get in to see another taping.

Unlike *Young Sheldon*, the show held up for all 12 of its seasons.

Beloved? Sometimes and sometimes not so much.

The show will be two subway stops away, but Walberg will be hosting that
one.

Because he won't be singing, and because I'm not a fan of Wheel, I won't be
traveling, although I was recently in Pittsburgh for a production of The
Drowsy Chaperone in which he did not sing. Had lunch with him and a few
other fans in April.

There's been much fan speculation about him possibly replacing Pat.

Fans have two more game show episodes to look forward to.

TV related -- art imitating art -- that is, Ryan Murphy deserves some
credit.

(It was mentioned in today's *Washington Post*, and I'm sure throughout
social media,)

Toward the end of the series *Glee* there was a story arc in which Rachel
(Lea Michele's character), now a college student in NYC, auditions for --
and gets -- the role of Fanny Brice in a Broadway revival of *Funny Girl*.

[TV orNotTV] Fox News Tells Upfront Story With No Mention Of Prime-Time Stars 05/18/2022

2022-05-19 Thread Melissa P
Is this anything?

Does it make sense that non-primetime programming is subsidizing Carlson,
Hannity, and Ingraham?

"So why were Carlson, Hannity and Ingraham omitted? It may be because the
goal of the Fox News Media pitch was to emphasize journalism and
entertainment over the partisan opinions of its three prime-time firebrands.

Plus, the three shows have proven to be a difficult sell -- at least
according to numerous reports. To put it another way, the shows are adept
at drawing audiences, but not mainstream advertisers."

Meant to post this a few days ago: From:

Oz served a two-week stint as the guest host

of *Jeopardy!* last spring, drawing some outrage from viewers for his past
support of pseudoscientific treatments. According to the filing, Oz was
paid more than $268,000 for the guest-hosting gig, with all of that money
being donated to an unnamed charity.

Just catching up with mail missed while traveling.

I attended a taping of Dharma and Greg (loved the show), and at one point,
Mr. Ryan plopped down in an empty seat next to mine. He was charming. I'm
pretty sure we chatted about him and Susan Sullivan playing a married
couple years earlier on a soap opera. I think both were on Another World.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Capitol Steps hang it up

2022-02-24 Thread Melissa P
The Capitol Steps had been performing for years before I went to a show,
two, in fact -- because a local HWCNBN fan's husband performed with the
troupe. So, I'm guessing that was in 2004 or 2005.

I'm pretty sure Russell was the entertainment at an event I went to, only I
can't remember which one. That's what happens when you get old. He was an
institution in the city for decades, so I'm glad I got to see him in
person.

I like the job she's doing more than you do, but I think Jennings does
better.

I disagree with you -- strongly -- on her stylists. I think they do a
great job dressing her and her hair.

For comparison, Mindy Kaling's stylist also does a great job. In contrast,
Kelly Clarkson's sucks.

I agree it is a muddled story. As I have been arguing for some years
now, every story about reduced ratings for major TV events should include
some estimate of what the expected decline would be based on established
trends, to allow judgement if the decline in this instance was more or less
than expected. This story starts to do that, then wanders off.

Similarly, it starts to say ratings decline is a disaster, then wanders
 into maybe not so bad.

The actual story is that ratings, while not irrelevant, do not mean
what they used to. First, because of all the other ways people view tv
content, and other ways corporations have and are finding to monetize that.
Second, because, somewhat paradoxically, in a universe in which ratings are
severely down all over, even CSI range numbers can be financially useful.

Yep, whatta blessing that he's running for public office. Saw his poll
numbers not too long ago. Single digits.

In the meantime, HWCNBN is running for Congress again. So, no expected
appearance on Idol this season, and apparently there's another already
filmed game show episode with an uncertain future.

I liked it more than you did, but in the interest of offering
consistent commentary, I couldn't help noticing that the baby in the movie

As you may recall, I complained here about the modern neckline of the
prison outfits worn by the stars of *The Trial of the Chicago 7*.

What's with Sorkin's choice of costume designer? Authenticity isn't a

The article title caught my attention:

Perspective | Three things Aaron Sorkin doesn’t understand: Comedy, sitcoms
and women

What "Being the Ricardos" gets wrong about Lucille Ball and television
history.

By Annie Berke

https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2021/12/14/aaron-sorkin-lucille-ball-being-ricardos-sitcom/

Because I've agreed with it since Sports Night.

Another Sorkin project, another anachronism. After watching The Trial of
the Chicago 7 about a year ago, I remember remarking to a friend: The
neckline of those prison uniforms is so 2020! No prison uniform had that
neckline in 1970!

2021-08-13 Thread Melissa P
Sorry to hear about the dog and cat (cats should never be outside because
they get hit by cars).

Glad you're becoming a cat person. There's never been a time in my life
when there wasn't a cat in the family. Phantom is my fourth cat as an
adult. Cats are known to seek out those who don't particularly care for
them. When I was growing up, my mother's friend Pam, who really didn't
like cats, was a favorite of Snowball.

2021-08-13 Thread Melissa P
The only still-living cast member of *Hearts Afire* (who appeared in every
episode) is Billy Bob Thornton.

Ed Asner, Leslie Jordan, Beth Broderick, and the kids (one of whom is still
semi-famous in show business) are still alive, but, except for two of
the kids, they didn't appear in all three seasons.

Morning show hires usually aren’t a reason to rise up and cheer. But
‘CBS This Morning’s’ hiring of NFL star Nate Burleson as a co-host is
 brilliant.

Re: [TV orNotTV] RIP Markie Post

2021-08-08 Thread Melissa P
Oh, my goodness. How terribly sad.

I was SUCH a big fan -- but only when she did *Hearts Afire* (still the
most perfect sitcom about Capitol Hill ever done). There's an episode
guide to prove it.

Her absolutely biggest fan -- a former professor of bassoon at the
University of Idaho -- passed away a few years ago. Because of her, he
became my first online friend.

I got to chat with her on the set of Hearts Afire, and she could not have
been nicer. She was also lovely to my Idaho friend when he finally got to
meet her at a taping of *Odd Man Out.*

The last time I believe I saw her on screen was when *30 Rock* had a *Night
Court* cameo.

I was wondering if she would get to appear on the upcoming reboot of the
latter.

I certainly have no medical expertise, but somehow I know that
dermatologists won't prescribe a certain acne medication to women unless
they're on birth control.

Perhaps that's also true of one or more of the medications Britney is
taking, and a judge has ordered her to take that medication.

Well, essentially she's already supporting Federline's 6 children, only two

But what makes most sense to me is that she shouldn't get pregnant because
of the psychotropic medications she's probably taking, which could harm
unborn children.

Re: [TV orNotTV] They're fake.

2021-05-21 Thread Melissa P
First, I don't have the skills you guys have when it comes to clever
subject lines, so I apologize if the title is imprecise.

Second, I attend many speeches/discussions that include Q sessions with
the audience.

I don't disagree with much of what you said.

But here's something interesting that I immediately noticed during the
pandemic when the events I used to attend are now online.

I like to challenge speakers when I disagree with them. I guess the topic
I do most of the challenging on is school choice (I believe that there are
exceptions, but most students belong in public schools. I'm particularly
opposed to public financing of any type of religious indoctrination
education.)

In person, I'd often get called on and get to ask my question. Now,
however, the questions I submit online never get chosen. Amusing, but also
somewhat annoying.

So, while I agree that there are benefits for those in charge to being able
to pick and choose, it can be a nonrandom process.

2021-05-21 Thread Melissa P
I was able to attend the MSNBC town hall last week, held at Northern
Virginia Community College, Alexandria (where Dr. Jill Biden has taught for
several years).

Televised town halls are completely staged. It makes perfect sense, of
course, when every minute of an hour of TV must be planned in advance. I'm
sure everyone here already knew it, but I can at least provide first-hand
confirmation.

For example, I was not given an opportunity to ask a question. As we were
being signed in, those given blue wrist bands had been pre-selected to ask
a question, I later discovered. I was given a red wristband.

None of us knew what the blue bands meant until the show started. In fact,
a non-picked person was on his way to the mic when he was shooed back to
his seat!

I did get to say something to Lawrence O'Donnell afterward. When I told
him that I loved *Mr. Sterling* and mentioned the similarity between
Senator Sterling and Senator Manchin, he said: "I love hearing that!"

It was also cool to hear President Biden, in the pre-taped interview that
was shown before the town hall, talk about the data I used to help produce.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Oscars So Good

2021-04-26 Thread Melissa P
I agree with just about everything Dave said.

I tuned in at 8 pm ET, the start of the show, only to discover that the
recordings of the 5 nominated songs were broadcast before 8 pm. If I want
to see that footage, I guess I'll have to search for it online.

That was what I found most annoying.

The endless, bad, humorless speeches are a close second. Why were
the winners and others allowed to talk so long?

Everyone on camera was just plain dull.

Questlove was not the right person for the job.

Not only did the In Memoriam move too fast, the speed changed throughout
the piece (Why? Are some more worthy than others of being remembered?),
and the background song, whatever it was, was a poor choice.

My only compliment goes to the setting. Having spent time at Union Station
(train trips to Santa Barbara and to the East Coast), it made an impressive
backdrop.

Re: [TV orNotTV] British Reaction to US Pharmaceutical Ads

2021-03-08 Thread Melissa P
Apologies for the spotty input -- because grad school was decades ago.

That said, if I remember correctly, a semester class was split into two
parts, one of them, the economics of advertising.

Around the time that I was in school, the Federal Trade Commission was just
beginning to lift bans in certain industries that had previously been
prohibited from advertising on television. I remember long discussions in
class about those industries and even wrote a term paper on one of them --
eyeglass advertising. The others I remember are the funeral industry,
lawyers, and -- (and non-OTC) pharmaceuticals.

The theory: more advertising = more competition = lower prices (and more
and better information) for consumers.

By now, I'm sure there's a ton of data and conclusions about how effective
lifting the bans has been. Benefits outweigh costs? Prices? I haven't a
clue because I haven't looked at the papers/studies. One effect is most
certainly the case: advertising by the legal profession has made it
possible for an oversupply of lawyers to find employment.

Pharmaceuticals? Lower prices? Better health? Better informed
consumers? I don't know, but the literature is undoubtedly out there.

Just thought I'd post because it seems that a lot of people don't remember
a time when morticians, optometrists, lawyers, and drug companies didn't
advertise on TV.

Re: [TV orNotTV] CBS glitchy?

2020-12-12 Thread Melissa P
I also think it's Spectrum.

NBC and MSNBC sometimes do the same thing on my TV and I'm convinced it's
Comcast. And yes I know they're owned by Comcast.

It's annoying. It's been bad lately, but sometimes I can go for months
without it happening.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Rachel Maddow returns to air, describes partner's virus bout

2020-11-21 Thread Melissa P
Rachel isn't a lawyer.

Funny, I watch her show every night, but I don't think she's a good talk
show guest.

I haven't listened to her Spiro Agnew podcast, but I thought it was
fascinating that she discovered irrefutable evidence of his antisemitism.

 what is ostensibly a news program. I don’t have any animosity towards her;
her show’s style is a byproduct of Trump, where snark and informality get
in get in the way of news and information. Her personality is the bulk of
her show... her perspective. And I wish both she and her beloved Susan (as
opposed to my beloved Susan) all the best, but her type of show is just
awful to me. I just don’t see the point of a prime time series that does
nothing but preach to the choir.

2020-11-07 Thread Melissa P
Actually, the only real problem you mentioned is the fact that your brother
has two phones.

The days of each household having only one, maybe two telephone lines are
long gone.

Perhaps we'll have to go back to mailed questionnaires -- along with
financial incentives.

Yes, Nate doesn't do his own polling.

And the polling is where the problems are. I predict a lot of friction at
the next AAPOR (American Association for Public Opinion Research) meeting.

My semi-educated guess: cell phone problem not solved and may never be
solved.

Re: [TV orNotTV] One of "Idol"'s first final three gone

2020-11-01 Thread Melissa P
Gee, I'm reminded of the last time I sat on a jury. Medical malpractice
case.

Lawyers representing the doctors failed to instruct the jurors on the
statistics they barely mentioned: Most people who suffer aneurysms aren't
cocaine abusers, but if you've been a cocaine abuser, you've put yourself
at a higher risk for having an aneurysm.
