Re: [TV orNotTV] NFL clears up Week 15

2023-12-04 Thread daniel anderson
Fox was planning to air Cowboys-Bills in 89% of the nation, with
Eagles-Seahawks going to 10%. By moving the latter to ABC, Fox can pump
Cowboys-Bills to the whole nation. (and you notice, the Cardinals used
their blackout two weeks ago, knowing this could happen.

I read that Fox left Cowboys-Bills unprotected.

[TV orNotTV] Re: WDIV Detroit 75th anniversary special

2022-11-06 Thread daniel anderson
Both Mort Crim and George Kell *made the station*. The station had lost
credibility in the 1960's due to dictates from the station's conservative
owners who also owned the Detroit News, e.g., no replaying Huntley-Brinkley
coverage of Vietnam, downplaying the 1967 riots, and refusing to play
Saturday Night Live. Crim and Kell got the station back on track. Crim was
the best lead anchor the station ever had and Kell was the best Tigers TV
play-by-play guy.

2021-04-11 Thread daniel anderson
I remember watching the 1990 version with Patrick Wayne, since it aired on
the NBC affiliate out of Greenville SC.

But i have seen Wink Martindale host it too, from reruns on GSN.
Martindale, by far was the better host...

The Joker's Wild was on the CBS affiliate in 1990, hosted by Pat Finn, but
for the same reasons, Jack Barry was the better host

Speaking of announcers, i assume that Lee Vines was a CBS staff guy, much

I believe that the reason why CBS has Detroit at Tennessee is that FOX
had more sports events this weekend than technical capability to handle
them.

Surpsied to see Cowboys/Niners as the main early game for CBS..figured
Patriots/Fish would have been.

[TV orNotTV] Re: NFL schedule changes for Dec 20th

2020-12-11 Thread daniel anderson
Usually, I'll watch the Panthers game(i live in NC) and if it's a Fox DH,
"America's Game of The Week." This week, it's Broncos-Panthers and
Saints-Eagles. Of course, with the Broncos stinking up the joint this
year, we get Andrew Catalon and James Lofton rather than Jim Nantz and
Tony Romo.

Fox is dipping into their CFB pool and using Joe Davis on the
Falocns-Chargers game. It's only on in Atlanta, Los Angeles and San Diego.
Is that common for a 7th crew telecast?

It's something to do with not upsetting DIRECTV, since Sunday Ticket need a

figure that Kevin Burkhardt and Daryl Johnston do the Panthers-Packers

So, what happens if Buck or Nantz were to get COVID? At CBS my guess, given

Players and coaches from the Baltimore Ravens have been testing
positive for COVID all this week so the NFL is postponing tomorrow's game
until Sunday. The Steelers beat writers I follow on Twitter have been
retweeting angry players. The team had its bye week shifted due to an
outbreak they weren't responsible for and they were looking to the
 extended
gap between tomorrow and next Sunday. Now that's gone due to an outbreak
they aren't responsible for. Of course they can't complain about having
their season ruined because they are 10-0.

My grandmother was an NBC girl in the 60s- Not just with Chet and David,
but the NBC daytime dramas then, "Days of our Lives," "The Doctors" and
"Another World." And the space coverage in that era- she preferred Frank
McGee over Cronkite.

But i was an ABC watcher, their sports coverage, Peter Jennings, shows like
"China Beach," "Life Goes On," "Twin Peaks," and "Homefront" were
considered some of the best quality shows on the air.

I have to agree with your assessment. People don't tune into a game show to
see the host. Price is Right has done well with Drew Carey, but people
don't tune in to see him, they tune in to see the contestants win. Same
thing with Let's Make a Deal; people don't tune in to see Wayne Brady, they
tune in to see the contestants win(and on both, sometimes they win big).
ABC did the Pyramid revival just right, with a host who stays pretty much
out of the way, like Dick Clark or Bill Cullen did.

[TV orNotTV] Re: SportsTV: A Torturous Broadcasting Hypothetical for CBS

2020-05-09 Thread daniel anderson
FOX has same issue with US Open and Redskins/Cardinals as well. My guess:
FS1 for final round, with FOX broadcast simulcasting after assigned game

If read the rules right, WCBS would have to show Dolphins/Jets in it's
entirety, because of contractual obligations. But the Masters is a pretty
big event, so, maybe they would delay that game and Chiefs/Raiders.

[TV orNotTV] Re: NFL shuffling schedule

2019-12-06 Thread daniel anderson
Interestingly, Fox is allowed to show the NO/SF game opposite a Jets home
game in New York. Menawhile Houston, Cleveland and Buffalo get hit with Fox
game at 4p of little geographic interest, Chargers at Jacksonville. The Fox
affiliates in those markets can only run one game and it has to be in the
4p window because the clubs in those markets are playing at home at 1p and
on CBS. The, how is NY allowed to air a game opposite the Jets, who are at
home? In the interest of stronger ratings in the nation’s largest market.

[TV orNotTV] Re: soap operas.

2019-03-08 Thread daniel anderson
The music on soaps have changed- in my grandmom's day it was organ music.
By the time i came along(1985) it was precoded.

Not having an announcer is another. Since *Another World* was an P soap,
it meant hearing Bill Wolff deliver sponsor reads for Crest, Crisco, Head &
Shoulders, Ivory, etc. and Crest is still P owned.

I don't think "Y" has had any since Bern Bennett retired in 03. "Days of

Alan Berns, who's "this is CBS" id was heard till 2000, did "Guiding Light"
for years. And Harry Kramer who did Edge of Night for years as well as
being Walter Cronkite's announcer.

I've always had a soft spot for *Another World*- in the 80s, but i've heard

Wolff mostly announced the sponsors and if needed cast changes and to tell

Re: [TV orNotTV] Colbert Blooper?

2019-02-14 Thread daniel anderson
The NCAA tournament is another one, because it all depends on when the
first game ends.

CBS used to be set up with "multiple network capability" where they
could(back before they shared rights with Turner) where they could end
basketball coverage in most of the country, but keep local markets on a
late running game. Happened twice- in 1994 with the Minnesota-Louisville
game and in 2006 with the Utah St.-Washington game. They’ve got a lot of
hoops to jump through when there’s a live show in prime. In the first case,
CBS had to go to 60 Minutes(because it looked like the game wouldn't end
till after 7:30, and in the latter case, only the states of Washington and
Utah were getting that game, so CBS went to local news early. There was a
bomb scare in the Thursday afternoon sessions in San Diego that delayed the
games there, so that might have influenced CBS's decision there. I don't
remember them ever doing it since.

This Sunday was one example- the Jaguars-Chiefs game was a blowout, so that
audience was switched to the Ravens-Browns game. But on a network's
singleheader day, they are not permitted to continue live coverage of an OT
game past 4:20 or 4:25. But... the Chiefs game was switched to the Ravens
game because it was more competitive, so that canceled out because it was
switched before the Chiefs game was over.

Would say the first non-announcer plugs that i remember, was for Blue
Bonnet Margarine on reruns of game shows on USA Network in the early to
mid-90s. They seemed to be dated- likely from the 80s. $100K Pyramid did
have mini-ads too, at least from reruns i watched on USA. GSN showed them
