Not familiar with Suse, but here's a WAG. In other *nix systems I have worked on, su is different than su -. su - puts you in a new login shell as root. su keeps you as the old user, same environment (PATHS, etc.). Maybe when it said cp: cannot open `G' for reading: Permission denied it
