Look at the ratio of useful content to boiler plate in that message!
By the way, as a non-comical aside, do those services/sites like nabble
actually copy messages off this list? Or do they just preserve messages
already going through their queue... or does that make no sense.

Also when a message goes to a public list, is the "intended recipient"

So that, in order to violate this monster clause you'd have to be visiting

Re: [U2] PE72 Unidata will not start

2011-10-11 Thread Colin Alfke
Check your logs under @udtbin - especially smm.log and smm.errlog (also
double check them in @udtbin\saved_logs). There may be some clues in there.
With licensed versions you need to restart everything after applying the
license (reboot recommended) - but I'm not sure how the PE version deals
with that.

Double check with confprod.exe (in @udtbin) to make sure the license is
correct and authorized.

Re: [U2] Universe File Issue

2011-10-11 Thread Dan Fitzgerald

Actually, the distributed file option is a good one, if you can't go to 64
bits. You create a few files (say, 3), then build the file using DEFINE.DF.

But in terms of recovering this file, not without losing some records, unless
you get very lucky. You can use UV to copy the file, and when you hit the
broken part, try to use fixtool to (first) rebuild the forward and/or backward
link, or (second) truncate the group. One trick that might work is to write a
basic program that sequentially processes the file, writing a record to a new
file, then deleting that record from the original (make a backup first). This
will shrink the file as you go. You'll still have at least one broken
flink/blink somewhere.

Re: [U2] Universe File Issue

2011-10-11 Thread Tom Whitmore
Hi John,
You do have several options, depending on your company's needs.
1) purge
2) convert the file to 64 bit so it can grow over 2 gigs (modify uvconfig
64BIT_FILES parameter and then resize the file with the "64BIT" option. (see
UniVerse User Reference and Administering UniVerse documents from Rocket)
3) convert to a multi-part file. This allows you to break up a file based on
an i-descriptor, but I couldn't find details during my quick search. It would
be the most complicated to implement of the three, if it hasn't been deprecated

I inherited a system running UniVerse over windows 2003 Server.

I have a history file that seems corrupt. It's just over 2 gigs in size (The
problem I believe) and fixfile and uvfixfile won't work on it.

I'm thinking the size of the file needs to shrink a bit before I can do
anything with it. Thoughts?

Depends on the Universe version you have as well. I think versions
9.x supported 64 bit files. I don't have the friendly manual on me at
the moment.

I guess you have a 32bit file, so that you can't go over 2 Gb.
You should try RESIZE FILE x x x 64BIT

Re: [U2] The math just doesn't work.

2011-10-11 Thread Martin Phillips

Hi all,

If my memory over 20 years ago in PI/open development is reliable (probably
not), I seem to recall that the string arithmetic functions were invented to
handle either very large integer numbers or fractional numbers with a large
number of decimal places. I think it was the high precision daily interest
calculations required by banking systems that motivated the development.

I thought that large integer addition is why the functions SADD, SCMP and
SDIV were invented?
