I've also used the unix/linux OS-level cp command
to make a duplicate copy of our entire production database for
development use evey night for the past 12 years, and have yet to run
into a single issue with file integrity.
That's only possibly valid if you don't use dynamic
processes setup.
Thanks,

Hello all,
I have a client that only does backup once a week. I feel this is a
dangerous situation and would like to suggest they look for an alternative.
I believe that they could mirror the live system, stop the mirror, backup
this copy and then restart and resync the mirror. What I don't
One question that needs answering first though is are they using UniData
or UniVerse?

Universe or unidata?
How long does their weekly backup take?
Are they really 24x7, or do they shut down for the backup?
How do they currently do the backup? Uvbackup? Cpio?
How much of their data is outside of u2 on unix files?

OK - assuming they are on a late enough version of UniData, the best way
is to use the dbpause to pause the updates, then backup - yes using
mirrors would make that an easier process - then dbresume. If they are
not on a late enough version, then get them to upgrade... (Late enough

We're looking at restructuring our backups also. Our current mess includes
3, 2-hour backups overlapping over 4.5 hours. Considering that these are all
taken from the original... This is bad.

I'm not so sure of that. Even when I'm setting up users on UniVerse, I
