With Gusty using GNOME, clicking Quit - Restart doesn't restart. It
closes the X server, blanks the screen and halts the machine. The same
thing happens when X crashes. I don't know if the machine is actually
stuck, or if it goes into text mode without turning the screen back
sudo su is not the optimal way to get a root shell if you really need
one. If you try sudo -i, you should get a better result.

I'm encountering something similar with PPRacer on a Matrox G400. Other
games also have problems (Neverball and SuperTux) but Tremulous and Open
Arena are fine. However, the PPRacer problem is not evident in Gutsy
Tribe 4.

Oddly enough it was a hardware issue involving my motherboard. I tried to
install windows with the same problem. Some odd error caused the system to
go into hibernate over and over again. Amazingly you could still operate
within Ubuntu if you can get past the annoying error messages, you can't fix
Same problem here on the upgrade. Timezone was
America/Kentucky/Louisville. Changing it to Europe/Berlin as above got
it to install.

Use Virtualization
I have the same problem in Gutsy with Intel graphic card, identified by
Ubuntu as Mobile 945GM/GMS/940GML Express Integrated Graphics. Whenever
I change desktop effects to normal or extra, the box appears. This
happens also when executing command mentioned by Sebastien.
