I tried the Live CD and it would not get to the login screen. I got the
usplash and then after a couple minutes, it went over to a console where
there were a lot of messages scrolling by. Some of which looked like...

I realized that once GDM is started that I can log into the machine via
XDMCP. Things seem to work the same as when using startx.
The missing menu and crashing applets made me wonder so I ran:

screen when gdm was supposed to show. The computer is still responsive
and i can even log in even though i can't see anything, but the screen
remains white. I can switch to console and checked the Xorg.0.log -

I don't think this patch is appropriate as it stands. You have to be
careful not to mount a partition from the hard disk. Remember that
cdrom-detect is used on regular Ubuntu CDs too. Let's say a normal from-
CD Ubuntu installation happened to encounter a partition on the hard
disk that happened to

soon as I switch back to stock speeds in BIOS and reboot the LiveCD.

I can concur with Michael Lueck in the comment above: I'm also seeing
identical incorrect functionality.

there is a technical limitation, if you don't enter a password the
system can't give on to gnome-keyring but that would also be a security
issue because it would mean anybody would have access to your gnome-
keyring content, if you really want a non secure password storage just
set an empty gnome-p

I can confirm that the previous patch works correctly as compiled on the
latest Hardy package of mplayer (1.0rc2-0ubuntu13). I have also tested
it on a "normal" DVD where the first track is in fact the correct one
(i.e. mplayer works without the patch) and there is no regression.

This bug also occurs for me in Hardy, using evince or kpdf. However,
xpdf does not expose the problem.
The same version of evince (2.22.2) in debian lenny does not have the
problem, using a newer version of poppler (0.8.4 instead of 0.6.4).

I don't think 3.8 should enter -updates. If it fixes one or two high-impact
bugs, open bugs for them, and follow the SRU procedure.
Now, for those who really want 3.8 in hardy, ie. with potential regressions,
and knowing all changes haven't been thoroughly checked, etc., I reopened the
