OK, I've attached the data you requested. Sorry for forgetting the
kernel log before. I did have the cdrom in /etc/fstab and I removed it.
I thought it fixed the problem at first because after I rebooted and
inserted the DVD it automounted, but it only did it once. I tried
rebooting numerous times

Yes. Actually I am gathering info now. Some soundcards don't seem to show
it though. So i'm gathering info on those that don't show it. Can you add
/proc/asound/card0/codec#0 to the bug. Trying to nail down which cards are ok

I applied the patch, and it seems working without any intervention.
Should I remove the /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf because it was not there

Same bug in my case, but different solution.
The bug appeared when I used "su root" in a terminal, then tried the
upgrade using apt-get, synaptic, or dpkg.
However, when I used "sudo dpkg" etc from a user terminal, the
installation finished correctly. I didn't need to make any changes to
/var/li

I booted using the Kubuntu karmic alpha 9 desktop CD.
The system booted fine, KDE started up, got the KDE startup chime,
but then the desktop went completely black. No wallpaper or menus or widgets.
The mouse cursor was visible but clicks had no effect.
