However, this will also restart autostarted virtual machines (that do not
reside on NFS drives), often resulting in a crash of those virtual machines.

Reliable mounting of NFS shares at boot is hard in Karmic, and error
messages always appear (bug #504224), but I haven't seen the rpc.statd
errors after the RC. (bug #431248) Are you using the latest updates?
Also, try with just 'defaults' as option.

The issue of the static ip address is bug #446031, so I'm using dhcp on the
servers now. I was also using a separate /boot that added to the confusion.
(bug #462961, now fixed.)

Scott, I did sent SIGUSR1 (using htop). Maybe I'm doing it wrong though.
Meanwhile, I'm seeing this problem all networks under my care and I'm using
Albrecht's workaround for them.
(I have now seen this problem on 5 different machines in 3 different networks.)

It isn't. I just moved (around) 18000 messages from one online IMAP account to
another without crashing.

When I try to connect to my office VPN, I get an error message like,
"Can't connect to VPN because the VPN service stopped unexpectedly".
This connection worked fine in Jaunty and up until recently in Karmic.
