Thermald in bionic is relatively ancient. One may see better results
with newer LTS versions of Ubuntu, such as focal. If this is still and
issue perhaps upgrading to Focal 21.04 is worth trying.

The test script adds a tracing filter:

..that takes a few minutes to apply and during that time we see the RCU
and/or softlockup messages. This is kind of expected since we're blocked
in kernel space updating ftrace points across the kernel which is slow

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS systems have the atop/acct conflict problem where if
you install acct it wants the pacct file in one place
(/var/log/account/pacct) and then if you install atop it starts
atopacctd that
In Ubuntu 20.04 LTS the script /etc/init.d/atop calls
/usr/share/atop/atop.daily which does read /etc/default/atop and uses
the variable LOGGENERATIONS=28. Systemd
/usr/local/lib/systemd/system/atop.service also calls
/usr/share/atop/atop.daily.
Confusingly, the file /etc/default/atop says not

I've re-worked the patch as the stdout format printing can just use the
vfprintf variant. I've also re-worked the ncurses variant to truncate
and move the cursor rather than append a '\n'.
I'll be pushing a fix to the git repository and uploading the new
version soon.
