In Ubuntu 11.10, when installing qt creator through the software center
or synaptic, it can't find a toolchain because a c++ compiler isn't
specified as a dependency, but of course needed. For me installing
build-essential fixes the problem.

Still the same with intrepid. I installed it and entered proxy settings in the
installer. They weren't transferred to the proxy configuration applet but only

It has an integrated ATI chipset, output of lspci is below. When enter standby
it goes to standby but on resume it always just restarts (as if I
t' still present in hardy alpha.
Those button should work out-of-the-box and also the forward and backward
buttons on the keyboard should as well, if available.

Since the keycodes for the basic multimedia keys are the same among all
keyboards AFAIK (else they wouldn't work with the standard driver in windows)

I installed a german kubuntu 7.04. When I do a console login via gdm
or switch to one of the virtual consoles with CTRL+ALT+F2 for example,
many erman umlauts as well as many other symbols are displayed with
wrong characters. aptitude for example looks very ugly. Perhaps

least the root partition (otherwise the installer won't continue and display a
warning) I can't install 7.04 at all.

I just had this problem again on ubuntu edgy
Nautilus shows some subfolders which are registered with Windows Vista (as
Music and Documents) as read-only, all other dirs are fine.

Currently (at least on edgy) the bootloader (GRUB) is installed into the MBR of
the drive.
IMHO this has several disadvantages. If installing another OS (like Windows or
another Linux distro) the MBR often gets overwritten, and it's rather hard to

This is just NOT the way it works in any other operating system, including

I know this isn't the best argument, but why not do the same as Windows does?
If the accent can't be placed (in international mode) it's written seperate.
There's the same for the ^ key, I've to hit it two times to get the char ^
which is annoying especially in instant messaging. And in this

It's common e.g. in KDE that the session is saved on logout (you can't
switch it off at all). Usually there are no apps open when you logout,
and it's IMHO a very intuitive thing that the apps that were open at
logout are present at login again.
There's another thing (which is a little bit more

The problem is that on a default ubuntu installation there's no run command
in the system menu any more. This was a very nice feature.

I also vote for this. When installing a german version of Edgy I have
search engines like answers.com which are just not applicable for (many)
german users. And the wikipedia plugin searches the english wikipedia.

What I miss in Edgy is an easy way to run a command as root withput using sudo
in a terminal. I mean e.g. running gedit nautilus as root.

I also have a D600 and whats also strange there is that when I change
from ALSA to OSS mixer in the GNOME volume applet, I have a PCM-2 slider
which controls the volume of only the headset, not the integrated
speakers.
