up it finds data on swap partition, and then it says it is rewriting

I still see those boot messages. They happen BETWEEN usplash and
xsplash; after the white ubuntu logo kicks in, it suddenly disappears
and a few messages appear such as:

I updated yesterday Jaunty to Karmic and had a problem with the grub2
installed in the Ubuntu at the other partition, which remained Jaunty -
because of this problem, I was loading a .28 kernel in Karmic. However,
the internet was ok; as soon as I booted the .31 kernel
It seems there was a problem while upgrading; please do the following:
1) Open a terminal (Applications - Acessories - Terminal)
2) Run
sudo dpkg --configure -a
and wait till it finishes. After that you may close the terminal.
3) Now, if everything went well, you'll be able to install / remove
Sorry for not coming back; it is not happening anymore. Have no idea
about the cause... Perhaps was the cd - therefore I think this bug can
be closed.

And I noticed that I could switch to a VT only *before* I try to log in.
Once I try and I get the error that leads me back to KDM, I can't access
a VT anymore.

I did iwlist scan, then I set the connection with key open and essid
variables and then I tried to dhcpcd the connection - I was used to this
