Just as a postscript on this if you do upgrade the kernel:
I noticed a couple of weeks later that my usb devices had disappeared. It took
me quite a long time to work out
that the udev files

/etc/udev/rules.d/20-names.rules

I installed
linux-image-2.6.24-2-generic_2.6.24-2.3_amd64.deb
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-2-generic_2.6.24.2-2.7_amd64.deb
linux-restricted-modules-common_2.6.24.2-2.7_all.deb
from hardy on a gutsy system and things appear fine. In particular the nvidia
driver works well as
does shutdown.
Just to add that this new kernel is quite noticeably zippier on my dual
Xeon emt64 system. Nice bonus! Linus must have done something right
between 22 and 24 ;-)

Thank you everyone for testing. I'm glad to hear that this appears to
be resolved with the new kernel.

The Hardy Heron kernel was recently uploaded for testing. It was most
recently sync'd with the 2.6.24-rc4 mainline kernel. We'd really
appreciate it if you could try testing with this newer kernel and verify
if this issue still exists. Unfortunately, the Hardy Heron Alpha1
LiveCD was released
I'm opened a new task against the actively developed kernel. However,
I'm closing the report against linux-source-2.6.22 as it does not meet
the criteria for a stable release update. You can learn more about the
stable release update process at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .
On hardy I can confirm that the 2.6.22-14 kernel *does not* shutdown. On
the other hand the 2.6.24-1 kernel DOES shutdown with the command
sudo shutdown -h now
So it looks indeed that this is a kernel bug since the 2.6.20 kernel
worked as well.

As a service to your loyal bug testers ;-) could you let me know how to
compile the restricted modules package against the 2.6.24 kernel as I
would very much like to upgrade my kernel on gutsy to remove what is a
significant inconvenience:
At present I am the only family member able to shutdown
My system reboots on shutdown either although beeing fully updated and

I've noticed that sometimes shutdown works. For me it usually happens
after I have booted Windows XP, shut it down normally, then booted up
Unbuntu. If I try to shut down Unbuntu any other way, then normal
shutdown starts rebooting again. It looks like Windows sets something
in the hardware
My system still does not shutdown with a fully updated system (December

I have exactly the same problem. I have found that if I allow the system
to reboot to the Grub OS selection page, then press 'c' to get a command
line, typing 'halt' shuts the computer down.

This behaviour is also true for Ubuntu 7.04. There I had the same
problem. To give more helpfull

Will 2.6.23 resolve the bug? When will 2.6.23 be out?
In fact it is more than anoying, since you have to turn the computer off by

Confirmed that this seems to be a kernel issue. If I boot the old Feisty kernel
(2.6.20-16) the problem does not occur.
I tried the 2.6.22-14-rt kernel and the problem is still present. I read on the

2.6.23 series.
I should have added I am using the 64bit OS with emt64 dual xeon
