I tried reinstalling, the result was as follows:
Only installing the japanese-input package was insufficient, after installing
skim, scim-qtimm and scim-tables-ja, I got for instance kate and firefox
accepting japanese input. However the problem with oowriter remains

I have the same problem as Shoko:
All KDE + firefox apps I have tried so far, work with Japanese input via skim,
but none of the OOo applications. The skim icon is present in the task bar but
only with ordinary keyboard input mode.
I cannot even open the menu of skim through clicking... It
I can't use Japanese input for OpenOffice and Skype and MSN messenger, neither.
But I can for Firefox.
I'm not bright for computer so much.
I just downloaded Kubuntu 8.04.
Please help me and give me a easy steps for my goal.

I want to install Ubuntu in Japanese for my in-laws, so I messed around
with putting SCIM support on my English laptop to get a feel for it.

The first one is, Hardy Heron is under development, then, this is unstable.

I had this working under Edgy 10, mostly by playing a lot. I had to
reinstall so I'm listing the steps I took to get it again. (not all are
necasarrily required this is just what I did)
Set up edgy in English
Add Japanese to language support snap in
Configure following in SCIM snap in
-toggle
This bug still exists in Feisty Herd 4 (clean install)

This problem still exists in Edgy (final). If you do an English install,
you will be unable to input CJK in applications.
Using the steps in this guide, I can always get it to work.
