Yes, you are right. I was using it wrong; I never had used make-kpkg before.
However, according to the README in lirc-modules-source it was described to be
done in this way, so I think there is some improvement possible in this package.

I run Edgy too. The strange thing is i installed it first, try to run it

used for running Gaim 2 on Dapper earlier, because i had to uninstall

[Bug 61426] Re: latest version of libgphoto2 in 6.06LTS does not support recent camera models

2006-11-11 Thread Chris Hermansen
Martin, Tormod;

Sorry to take so long to reply, I've been travelling.

Does it work in edgy? Yes, in fact I am now using Edgy.

Is it like bug #69156? No, there are error messages reported in that
bug. I don't have Dapper around now so I'm going from memory, but there
were no error messages. libgphoto2 or wherever the list of devices is
was just to old to have a Nikon D70s in it, so it recognized it as a
generic PTP camera. In contrast, the current version in edgy recognizes
it as a D70s.

The edgy libgphot2 seems to have issues with PTP? Not for me so far
(touching wood).

We will not do such intrusive changes for stable releases?

I completely understand that philosophy and I don't wish to argue with
it. However, if memory serves, there are for instance several versions
of GCC available in 6.06 apt, several versions of PostgreSQL, and I'm
sure other examples. Would it be too much to support another newer
version of gphoto2?

I'm asking this more as a community service question now, since I'm
still OK with edgy. The important point here is that, no matter how
well an old version of gphoto2 works, there are at least several hundred
new digital cameras out there that it doesn't support that are now on
the market.

This is probably almost a problem with the gphoto2 architecture itself;
the support for new cameras should probably be decoupled from new
releases of the system, but as far as I can tell it isn't.

Thanks for listening to me!

[Bug 57716] Re: Edgy Eft - fglrx module not started

2006-11-11 Thread imaier
I followed method 2 of
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Edgy_Installation_Guide and have
a problem that seems to be related. fglrx does not get loaded:

sudo modprobe fglrx
FATAL: Could not open '/lib/modules/2.6.17-10-generic/volatile/fglrx.ko': No
such file or directory

It seems that the .ko file of the custom driver is installed to the misc
directory and not to volatile:
/lib/modules/2.6.17-10-generic/misc/fglrx.ko

When I do a

sudo ln -s /lib/modules/2.6.17-10-generic/misc/fglrx.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.17-10-generic/volatile/

and then a modprobe, everything seems to work after an X restart, including 3d.
However, this link gets removed on the next system restart because of the
DISABLED_MODULES=fglrx line in  /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common.
When I remove fglrx from this line, the old 8.28.8 driver's .ko file will be in
the volatile dir after the next system restart just like the guide says. dmesg
confirms it:

fglrx: module license 'Proprietary. (C) 2002 - ATI Technologies, Starnberg,
GERMANY' taints kernel.
[fglrx] Maximum main memory to use for locked dma buffers: 929 MBytes.
[fglrx] module loaded - fglrx 8.28.8 [Aug 17 2006] on minor 0

Any ideas? Where is it specified that modprobe/the driver (?, I don't
know much about linux internals) looks in the volatile folder and not in
misc?

[Bug 65791] Re: DPMS timeout restored incorrectly on login

2006-11-11 Thread H Jalonen
Sorry, but the patch doesn't fix this problem. Although it fixes the bug
about not saving monitor power off setting (bug #46585
https://launchpad.net/bugs/46585 and KDE bug tracker bug #128696
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=128696 ).

I made a clean install of Kubuntu 6.10, applied the fix and this bug
still persists. The root of this problem is that KDE for some reason
uses wrong time units, it misinterprets seconds for minutes. After
applying the patch if I set monitor to go off after 2 minutes,
displayconfigrc had line dpmsSeconds=120, command xset q returned
value 120 and monitor went off after 2 mins. However after logoutlogin
system settings showed monitor to go off after 2 hours and xset q
returned 7200.

However there is a workaround. I edited manually the dpmsSeconds value
in displayconfigrc to 2 and after new login system settings show that
monitor should go off after 2 mins, xset q returns 120 and my monitor
actually went off after 2 minutes. But there is a catch.

Before KDE is fully up and running it still seems to interpret the
dpmsSeconds value in displayconfigrc as seconds. So if the dpmsSeconds
value is small enough, monitor goes off after few seconds of inactivity.
Basically this means that your desktop starts with a blank screen. I was
able to reproduce this with dpmsSeconds values 5 and smaller. If the
value was bigger (for example 10) the seconds to minutes conversion
happened before monitor went off and it stayed on until as many minutes
had passed as was the value of dpmsSeconds.

How to fix this? Quick and dirty hack would be dividing the value stored
in displayconfigrc by 60 (this causes blank start screen problem with
small power off times), but the right way would be to find out where and
why this seconds=minutes misinterpretation happens and use only seconds
(or only minutes).

[Bug 71122] Re: No icon and confusing command

2006-11-11 Thread Reinhard Tartler
You're right that wpa_gui isn't accessible at all by default. One reason
for this is that it wpasupplicant needs configuration so that normal
users can actually use it. By default, only root may access the control
socket via wpa_gui. you can ease this restriction by setting a group in
the wpa_supplicant.conf. This is however far beyond of the scope for
configuring this package because we cannot give any sane defaults.

I'm not rejecting this bug because I agree that configuring
wpa_supplicant isn't an easy task. Perhaps there should be some kind of
wizard which helps with the initial configuration of the package. In
ubuntu, we hope that network-manager steps into the breach for this,
since it also offers a decent roaming solution with multiple interfaces.
But maybe someone else comes up with better tool?

Public bug reported:

It's a second time it happens. I find gaim crashed after I login to my

[Bug 67487] Re: [edgy][regression][rv280] black screen and console freeze when X starts - drm lockup

2006-11-11 Thread akaSpawn
I tried Byte's suggestion and it works great on Edgy Eft (it is not working on
Dapper Drake though-any solution yet?)
However I'm still having issues. I can't make it work in 800x600 res, the
default res is too small for my 14 monitor!
If I try changing the resolution to 800x600 it just reloads the graphic desktop.
I did the ATI trick (to load ati driver and disable acceleration) but when I
kill the X server... guess what... the black screen again and my computer hangs
up... :(
Running Pentium III with ATI Radeon 7000 PCI
Any help will be highly appreciated

Currently no supported stable Ubuntu releases ship with 1.0-9629. It is
the user's responsibility to update all the required components in lock-
step if external (non-Ubuntu, non-Canonical) packages are used.

[Bug 71336] service-admin doesn't launch

2006-11-11 Thread Daniel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

If I type
sudo /etc/init.d/dbus start

I receive the following on the terminal:

communicating with the backends: The name org.freedesktop.SystemToolsBackends
was not provided by any .service files
shift: 96: can't shift that many

I got a message box too, with a title and text (it is in hungarian, I
translate):

Then I tried to restart the dbus service, as I have read somewhere in the

[Bug 71337] gnome-power-manager issues with HAL reports on Asus M6Ne

2006-11-11 Thread Alessandro Colaci
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

- MY LAPTOP:
ASUSTeK Computer Inc.
M6Ne
1.0

- THE ISSUE:
Gnome power manager applet (the default one, configurable by the power
management entry in the Gnome Preferences) is not fully working, since it
seems faded out. If I add the other battery applet to the panel (from right
click on the panel add to panel systemhardware battery charge
monitor), I get this error message:

Can't access ACPI events in /var/run/acpi.socket! Make sure the ACPI
subsystem is working and the acpid daemon is running.

If I run:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/acpid start
 * Loading ACPI modules... [ ok ]
 * Starting ACPI services... acpid: can't open /proc/acpi/event: Device or
resource busy

$ sudo fuser -v /proc/acpi/event

 USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
/proc/acpi/event: haldaemon 4104 f hald-addon-acpi

Both the applets don't recognize when the laptop is running on battery
and always show a AC plug icon.

I suppose the problem is HAL, in bug #64838 you can see another report. Related
bugs are bug #64387 and bug #64646

[Bug 71338] iceauth crashed

2006-11-11 Thread Robert Casanova
Public bug reported:

There's a wizard that reports a crash, so I'll attach the file. The thing is
that I was using the beryl over XGl system and after going back to gnome I
couldn't log in. After opening an emergency X console I could open nautilus and
the rest of the gnome an log in again as usual, but the wizard now tells me
that there was a crash.

[Bug 69931] Re: Firefox crash when login to gmail

2006-11-11 Thread Thom Pischke
Same here. Firefox crashes when logging into gmail. Crashes in other
places too, but this one is consistent, and new since my fresh Fresh
install of edgy yesterday.

Note that firefox was working fine in my dist-upgrade version of edgy,
which i reinstalled from scratch to fix some boot problems.

2006-11-11 Thread fhackenberger
Now (edgy) network-manager-pptp is available. As soon as this package is
available, knetworkmanager provides an extra menu for 'VPN-Connections'.
But clicking on 'Configure VPN' doesn't do anything. Please confirm.

[Bug 71350] Non-latin letters in Java apps

2006-11-11 Thread Dmitry Maruschenko
Public bug reported:

I can't enter non-latin letters (eg. cyrillic) in any third-party Java
apps. I see some strange symbols instead of cyrillic letters. But
cyrillic input in Eclipse works fine.

I tested it in Zend Studio and in MagicDraw.

My /etc/environment is:

[Bug 71351] hidden menu items reappear after including them

2006-11-11 Thread Radomir Dopieralski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfdesktop4

Normally, I can create menu items in xfce menu that are called the same
as the included menu items, and they will override the included items
(i.e. I can change the icons or the submenu order, or add items into
submenus). This works ok for all the properties of menu items, except
the 'hidden' property.

If this was fixed (i.e. the 'hidden' property of an item would be
'inherited' from the first occurence of an item in the menu file), then
it would be possible to create gnome-like triple menu
(Apllications/Places/System) and many other variations.

This is more like a feature proposition than a bug, although the
behavior is indeed inconsistent.
