I guess there is no need to install 13.04 or 12.04 with kernel from 13.10. The disk tool shows low write speed in all of them for Kingston DT Ultimate G3 (32GB). But I can do that if you want... I can test the cache in Kingston DT Ultimate G3 (32GB), hope this not destroy the disk, its new one.

I had similar problem. I was unable to boot with new kernel and update- initrams -u -k all caused that I couldn't also boot with old kernel. At the end I tried to completly reinstall grub and all kernels through a live cd - that did a trick. All works now. Here's short list of steps I did.
