the snd_hda_intel driver was compiled right INTO the kernel, all to no effect;
according to mplayer, amarok and alsamixer I do have working
I'm not surprised, so try this:

Try the post from pcmanlin (AFTER compiling alsa 1.0.15 from source), I also
had to take those steps on Kubuntu Gutsy final (weird, I know, but
Maybe it's relevant, maybe it's not, but I've tried Feisty too (the alternate
disc only, the live disc won't boot on my laptop and crashes to busybox,
luckily this has been fixed in Gutsy.) and there I don't get any sound either.
I've also been trying Gutsy since Tribe 4 and it's the same story
I have sound now.
I have tried to compile the 1.0.15rc3(driver and lib) and 1.0.15rc1(util)
ALSA packages again, but this time I've first copied the .tar.bz2 files to

Binary package hint: rhythmbox
May be interlinked with bug #334144, I'm not sure about that.
When I reload the lirc daemon, I also have to manually close and reopen
rhythmbox. after I do this, rhythmbox crashes, and only after I open the
program after the crash will it make
The kernel module loads fine, from what I can see:
When I sudo /etc/init.d/lirc restart, it starts working without having to
load the kernel module again (in my case lirc_mceusb2).
The daemon tries to load when the boot progress bar is showing
