I did the theme change, but it didn't seem to have any impact. When I shutdown, I saw the ubuntu theme (instead of lubuntu) for the shutdown screen, but when it came back up it was still the blank screen. I was able to push the down arrow twice (as I discovered in this bug's duplicate:
