I get an effect which is like the screensaver kicking in (blank screen
only irrespective of choice of screensaver graphic) when playing a dvd
in VLC Player with Compiz running. Curious thing is it does it about
every 15 minutes regardless of the time set up on screensaver. I have

I get this in Open Office Draw. If I do 'Save As' OO Draw hangs. When I
try to quit I have to 'Force Quit' it. Same happens with'Export'. The
drop down menu title 'File' disappears as it hangs.
It makes the programme unusable. This is a very serious bug. I'm running
Hardy 2.6.24-19 AMD64 with OO
The problem appears to be in in the openoffice.org-gnome package. To get
a working OO system I did this:
Remove all openoffice packages:-
sudo apt-get purge openoffice.org-*
Then go to ApplicationsAdd/Remove and add 'OpenOffice.org Office Suite'
This will give a working OO although it does not
Looking at it further, the package that makes OO go odd appears to be
'openoffice.org-gtk' This can be loaded by itself. When loading
'openoffice.org-gnome' the -gtk package is loaded as well.
I now have a workable OO but the look and feel is a bit retro. It would
be good to get it working with

I have just experienced exactly the same issue as the op. Started up

Just to say thanks, Chris, for persevering. It took me a while to
understand that OOo is ok and that the fontconfig module(not an OOo
module) is where the bug lies.
It really is an eyesore though and the casual user will automatically
assume that OOo is at fault. The sooner this bug is well and

I'm getting a similar problem.
A web cam microphone that works fine in Jaunty as mic2 is not being
picked up by PulseAudio in Karmic. I can't find an option to change to
mic2 and there are no input devices shown in the Volume Control window,
Input Devices tab.

Not too sure how it happened again, I was removing alsamixer from Ubuntu
Software Centre and as the window closed after removing alsamixer apport
popped up.

I'm not too sure if I understand the real issue here. I have experienced
a 'learning curve' with pulse audio but have got it to work. It is
dynamic and you need to have an application running and using audio in
order to see the application (and controls) listed in the Applications
tab in the Sound
There is a lot confusion between alsa mixer gui and pulse audio
controls. I suggest a clear explanation of each and a warning that
running both means of controlling audio together will result in
unexpected events.
PulseAudio is dynamic and that should be explained clearly. For example,

amd64 flashplugin and had minor hiccups. Removing nspluginwrapper fixed

Since the beginning of October 2009, not too sure which day, my sound
has not been working correctly. Both 32bit Jaunty and AMD64bit Karmic
are affected (kernel update?) .
It manifests inself by not allowing dvds and music cds to be played. VLC
player does not work. Movie Player does not work. I
