[Bug 1131750] [NEW] Global menu doesn't get triggered if mouse cursor is raised from Unity bar

2013-02-22 Thread Jarlath
Public bug reported:

Same as summary. See attahced ogv video (13 seconds long) for example. I
haven't noticed this behaviour despite using 12.04 since its release on
this same machine.

Expected behaviour: Global menu gets triggered when the mouse enters the top of
the screen
Actual behaviour: Global menu only gets triggered if the mouse cursor enters
the top of the screen to the right of the unity menu.

[Bug 979287] Re: Can't add 'other locations' for clock in 12.04 and 12.10

2013-02-20 Thread Jarlath
Also, as per my question here:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+question/222376
it is not possible to add a timezone without a location, such as UTC, PTS etc.
Terms such as these often append times for internet appointments such as Ubuntu
on Air and G+ hangouts. It's as important for me to be able to add these as it
is to add specific locations.

[Bug 1119167] [NEW] Icon emblems do not show the correct status after sync or client status is wrong

2013-02-08 Thread Jarlath
Public bug reported:

The U1 client tells me that "File Sync is up-to-date.", but in nautilus
I have a folder called "Audiobooks" which has the circulation icon on
it. Checking against the web-client, the folders contained inside
Audiobooks seem to be accounted for, and locally, they all have the
green tick emblem.

So I can't be confident that my files are backed up.

Thanks for your time.

[Bug 1071955] [NEW] Can't edit comments on USC since changing "Full name" field at login.ubuntu.com

2012-10-26 Thread Jarlath
Public bug reported:

I cannot edit my previous comments / ratings since changing my "Full

I changed it because my email address was being included in my comments.
I discovered on Askubuntu.com that my email address was in the Full name

Expected behaviour: When I edit a comment, I expect the changes to be applied.
Actual behaviour: Aftermaking my change and clicking "Modify" I get the

[Bug 1067832] Re: Can't redeem Humble Bundle purchases in Software Center

2012-10-21 Thread Jarlath
Solved the problem by issuing this command:

$ sudo -i
# apt-get clean
# cd /var/lib/apt
# mv lists lists.old
# mkdir -p lists/partial
# apt-get clean
# apt-get update

Source: http://askubuntu.com/questions/1877/what-is-the-easiest-way-to-

This still needs to be integrated in some way so that the user does not
need to do their own plumbing.

[Bug 983449]

2012-10-10 Thread Jarlath
Hi Thomas,

Thanks for your reply. I can currently reproduce this on the Ubuntu
12.04 Unity desktop which I believe uses Gnome as it's backend. I
haven't tried this on any other linux environments. I did try the same
experiment with (copying from and closing) Firefox and (pasting to)
Gedit, it worked correctly in this case.

However on MacOS 10.8 (Mountain Lion) this issue is not reproducible.
The clipboard contents are preserved on exit.

By the way, were you using KDE to reproduce this?

[Bug 1059799] [NEW] "Repair" option fails to repair

2012-10-01 Thread Jarlath
Public bug reported:

After trying to "Install" FreeMind, a dialog said "Requires installation
of untrusted packages".

Those packages were:
fop java-wrappers javahelp2 libapache-pom-java libavalon-framework-java
libbackport-util-concurrent-java libbatik-java libbcel-java libbsf-java
libcommons-codec-java libcommons-io-java libcommons-logging-java

libxerces2-java libxml-commons-external-java libxml-commons-resolver1.1-java
libxmlgraphics-commons-java libxom-java libxpp2-java libxpp3-java rhino
simplyhtml

I clicked "Repair", but after trying to install the app again, I got the same
error but for packages:
java-wrappers javahelp2 libbackport-util-concurrent-java libbcel-java
libcommons-codec-java libdom4j-java libgetopt-java libgnu-regexp-java
libjaxen-java libjaxme-java libjdom1-java libjgoodies-forms-java

libxml-commons-external-java libxml-commons-resolver1.1-java libxom-java
libxpp2-java libxpp3-java simplyhtml

I tried "Repair" several times only to find I kept getting the same error for
packages:
fop java-wrappers javahelp2 libapache-pom-java libavalon-framework-java
libbackport-util-concurrent-java libbatik-java libbcel-java libbsf-java
libcommons-codec-java libcommons-io-java libcommons-logging-java
libcommons-parent-java libdom4j-java libfop-java libgetopt-java
libgnu-regexp-java libjaxen-java libjaxme-java libjaxp1.3-java libjdom1-java
libjgoodies-forms-java libjibx1.1-java libjibx1.1-java-doc libjline-java

libxerces2-java libxml-commons-external-java libxml-commons-resolver1.1-java
libxmlgraphics-commons-java libxom-java libxpp2-java libxpp3-java rhino
simplyhtml

These are the same as from the original error, so nothing has been
repaired. No application has repaired successfully for me in USC, but
this is the first time I have recorded data. Will upload a video.

[Bug 1043011] Re: Purchasing a game in software center results in a SSL handshake error

2012-10-01 Thread Jarlath
I believe my bug report may be a duplicate, but I was not having this
issue at the time that this bug (1043011) was reported.

I believe that they are closely related enough to be marked as
duplicates so I will do that.

Yeah, I made my last purchase september 18th and the bug is over two weeks
older than that.

I tried again today and I get the same result.

Hi Gary,

I purchases Linux Format only a week ago with the same card, in case that

Thanks for responding.

[Bug 1057481] Re: SSL handshake failed: My purchase fails with error message

2012-09-27 Thread Jarlath
I see that the game I was trying to download, Wizorb is now a part of
the humble indie bundle which I have also purchased through the Software
Center. This may or may not have something to do with it.

[Bug 1043670] Re: update manager not working

2012-08-31 Thread Jarlath
Not sure if my issue has the same root cause but it looks likely. Here's
what update-manager gives me when I launch it:

Failed to load the package list

This is a serious problem. Try again later. If this problem appears
again, please report an error to the developers.

E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with
MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ie.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-
backports_multiverse_i18n_Translation-en, E:The package lists or status
file could not be parsed or opened.

I can't run Software Center either. When the automatic crash handler attempts
to report the problem, I get another error:
Could not determine the package or source name

Running "ubuntu-bug update-manager" gives the same message in a gtk dialog and
returns to the cli with message:

NULL' failed

[Bug 1040784] Re: network issues during scan over network cause program crash

2012-08-23 Thread Jarlath
And the log file from ~/.cache/simple-scan as instructed in bug 978693.

For some reason I can't predict when exactly it will freeze up.
Sometimes it's a lockup and sometimes it's a crash. But one thing is for
sure, it doesn't phase xSane.

[Bug 1040784] Re: network issues during scan over network cause program crash

2012-08-23 Thread Jarlath
First I ran simple-scan as below:
aisling@jarlath-Studio-1535:~$ simple-scan --debug > simple-scan.log 2>&1

I repeated the proceedure and the program exited with this text in the terminal:
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Unfortunately the log file doesn't give much information.

[Bug 1040784] Re: Simple Scan crashes if network connection is changed

2012-08-23 Thread Jarlath
Hi Michael,

Thank you so much for a quick response. I have gone through the links
you have sent me and I am surprised and delighted to say that the
problem does not occur with xsane - only Simple Scan.

Hardware Compatibility
The hardware is supported. The printer both prints and scans fine over the
network and has been for some time. It is only on this occassion that the
'network change' element was introduced and caused a crash. This is
reproducable.

" what happens after the application goes grey?"
It stays grey and I cannot interact with any of the button or menus. If I click
it several times or try to use the window managers close (x) button, I am told
that the application is not responding and that I can either wait for the
application or quit.

" have you tried xsane/scanimage?"
Yes. Loosing a connection to the network printer in xsane does not cause the
application to freeze in anyway. Even better, I can restore the connection and
continue scanning. I will investigate the application as a possible alternative
but Simple Scan is much better suited to our household in terms of usage and
features.

" you should probably read the following:"
Again, thank you for the information. I should have clarified that the scanner
works great for me in general. It is simply the network-disconnect that causes
Simple Scan the problems.

Anything else I can add?

Kind Regards,
Jarlath

[Bug 1008289] Re: "Failed to download repository information" for purchased application

2012-06-23 Thread Jarlath
I still have this error when I try to run update-manager:

W:Failed to fetch
https://private-ppa.launchpad.net/commercial-ppa-uploaders/lxf158/ubuntu/dists/precise/main/binary-i386/Packages
The requested URL returned error: 401
, E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones
used instead.

My machine was last updated 8 days ago so I should have the fix that was
released here. How should I proceed with this?

I know it affects windows version too.

I reported this to lxf and future publishing and they told me that
canonical do the packaging, which makes sense. I can't imagine the New York
Times having to roll their own .Deb files should they ever begin publishing

Anthony, I have now installed the package for LXF 156 (or at least, it
is marked as installed in the software center) but I still can't find it
in the dash.

Do I need to file a separate bug for this?

[Bug 1003521] Re: Users who do not require a password are logged in with sound muted every time.

Hi Sebastien, yes sound is working for those users. Just it is muted for

remember their previous sound settings.

I notice that 12.04 boots to the login menu with the sound muted. It
looks like this state may be propogated into the session of users who
don't require a password, but I'm guessing.

Lightdm could be incorrect - I think it's a session related problem.

[Bug 1003878] [NEW] Previous purchases cause errors in update manager

2012-05-24 Thread Jarlath
Public bug reported:

What seems to be as a result of the way magazine purchases are handled,
I get this popup dialog every time I run update-manager.

I believe this list will grow as I make more purchases unless I go into
software sources myself and delete them manually.

[Bug 997934] Re: Spellcheck does not detect any mis-spelled words on 12.04

2012-05-19 Thread Jarlath
Thanks to Bra|10n over in kubuntuforums.net (although this bug
represents an Ubuntu install) I now have a working spell check.

Steps to fix this issue:
1) Open the dash and run Language Support
2) Under the 'Language' tab, choose another variant of English and drag it
above the US English so it takes precedence.
3) Click "Apply System-wide" and log out.

On logging back in, spell check will work.

I've just installed IBM Lotus Symphony hoping to work around this issue
- but the exact same thing happens.

So either:
1) They both are depending on a service in Ubuntu 12.04 that is not available,
or
2) IBM Lotus Symphony is a port of LibreOffice or one of its other incarnations.

[Bug 997934] [NEW] Spellcheck does not detect any mis-spelled words on 12.04

2012-05-11 Thread Jarlath
Public bug reported:

This has been the case since Beta 2.

To reproduce:

1) Type out a load of rubbish on the keyboard as well as a few correctly
spelled words. I used "vmw;qbjk aoeuasnth aoeu house in the street"
2) Press F7 to initiate the spell check.

Actual Result: The spell check notifies the user of completion without any
recognition of errors.
Expected Result: The spell check should highlight each misspelled word and
offer alternatives.

A workaround for the time-being is to write your document in gedit,
check spelling when complete and then paste it into libreoffice-writer
afterwards for formatting.

[Bug 992789] [NEW] Unity shortcuts ignore current keyboard layout

2012-05-01 Thread Jarlath
Public bug reported:

With normal QWERTY keyboard layout (ie) on Ubuntu, the keyboard shortcut
to launch a terminal is CTRL + ALT + T.

When I change to USA/Dvorak, I should expect to press CTRL + ALT + K on
my physical keyboard, as 'K' corresponds to 'T' in Dvorak.

However, I actually have to use the old QWERTY key combination with my
Dvorak layout, which would print as CTRL + ALT + K, to launch a
terminal.

[Bug 983449] [NEW] LibreOffice clears clipboard contents on exit

2012-04-16 Thread Jarlath
Public bug reported:

When LibreOffice is running, I can copy text and paste it to another
application, eg gEdit.

Problem Case:
1) Select and copy some text in LibreOffice Writer
2) Close LibreOffice (and any other instances that may be running)
3) launch Text Editor and try to paste.

Expected outcome: The copied text should appear in Text Editor.
Actual outcome: The 'Paste' option is greyed out in the menu and it is not
possible to paste. My data is lost.

This might be best reported upstream but I'm not sure if the clipboard
'system' in Ubuntu is to blame or not. Here is the upstream report I've
made.

Off-topic: I just put 12.04 on my girlfriends laptop and she is very
unhappy to have lost 900 words of a critique this way.

confirmed it for me (thanks Greg).

11.04 though, would that be sufficient?

[Bug 822644] [NEW] "Previous Kernels" Entry should be there even from clean install to avoid breaking boot entries

2011-08-08 Thread Jarlath
Public bug reported:

Example of problem:
1) Do a clean install of Natty
2) Edit grub.cfg and change DEFAULT to 3 to make Windows the default OS
3) Update grub

result:
All is well until an updated kernel creates a new grub entry called "previous
kernels". Now my friends machine doesn't boot because DEFAULT=3 gives a memory
check (or somthing like that). So I have to manually edit grub.cfg again to
make DEFAULT=4.

Example solution:
1)A clean install of Grub already has a "previous kernel" entry, which at this
time is an empty list.
2)Edit grub.cfg as you wish
3)Update grub

result:
The DEFAULT boot entry will retain it's integrity.

** Affects: grub2 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 337964] Re: Power Manager is the only System->Preferences.. tool that can't be dismissed with ESC

2011-08-03 Thread Jarlath
Pedro, there is no System -> Preferences menu in Natty so I'm
transposing the initial example to System Settings "Control Center". The
situation is the same in Natty.

Most applications exit with ESC, for example; About Me, Appearance,
Assistive Technology, Broadcast Accounts, Broadcast Preferences.

Yet some require ALT+F4, eg; Compiz Config Settings Manager, Email
Settings, Launcher & Menus, Messaging and VOIP Accounts.

Note that the host application itself, "Control Center" (called "System
Settings" in the menu) can also be dismissed by ESC.

If you like, I can make a complete list.

2011-06-29 Thread Jarlath
Thanks Gary,

I have tried it at midngiht last night and the download definitely made it
past the 250MB mark - but this morning the same error happened. I rebooted
and restarted and it failed instantly.

I'm on mobile broadband - but I have downloaded large torrents such as the
Ubuntu ISO. Perhaps my connection is not good for a continuous download of
this size .. but I'm not sure how to determine if that is the problem.

[Bug 630899] Re: Belkin USB to Ethernet adapter not working since Lucid upgrade.

2010-09-05 Thread Jarlath
Just booted with the:
Linux ubuntu 2.6.31-22-generic #63-Ubuntu SMP Wed Aug 18 22:54:26 UTC 2010 i686
GNU/Linux

kernel, and the device is working. So -24 seems to be the problem.

2010-06-22 Thread Jarlath
Kamus,

The command never completes for me:

jarl...@vera-laptop:~$ gwibber-service -d -o
Updating...
Gwibber Dispatcher: DEBUGSetting up monitors
Gwibber Dispatcher: DEBUGMonitors are up
Gwibber Dispatcher: INFO Gwibber Service is reloading account credentials
Gwibber Dispatcher: DEBUGRefresh interval is set to 5

And here it stays..
