[Bug 1315964] Re: cryptkeeper segfaults at start sometimes

2015-04-02 Thread John Cottier
This is what it generates in the syslog:-
cryptkeeper[3026]: segfault at d3 ip 7f817fb30935 sp 7fff389025b0 error
4 in libgtk-x11-2.0
Sometimes different after segfault at, but always error 4.

It is totally random, tried having it run at startup and it random whether it
start, generates a crash dialog, or just does not appear.
But I have made a kind of work around :-/ Use this script to run it, it keeps
trying to run it every second up to 10 times until it does not error.

[Bug 1269992] Re: 2.02~beta2 requires manual testing

2014-04-02 Thread John Cottier
It would not install boot-repair as its not available for 14.04 64 bit yet.
Tried sudo debconf-show grub-pc but did not seem to show any path.
Tried sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc and it just gave a blank command line.
Booted the live CD to re-install and it offered an upgrade from 14.04 to 14.04
?!? I let it run that but it had a lot of errors with bad packages. I had a
suspicion that the original install had not in fact formatted the partition to
wipe 13.10 off (even though it was selected to do that). So I used gparted from
the live CD to delete the partition and start install again. This worked
flawlessly. I seem to remember that happening in the past too. So I am guessing
that on the original 14.04 install, it actually installed over the top of 13.10
and got confused over the files left over.

[Bug 798445] Re: can't discern between two files or folder with identical names

2014-03-05 Thread John Cottier
It seems a fundamental problem to me. Even without the duplicated name
problem, its pretty important to be able to see a file path to know
where is it located. The only way at the moment is to open it and then
do save as to see its path. A mouse over popping up the path would seem
the obvious solution. Hope this get fixed for 14.04.

[Bug 1241589] Re: ubuntu 13.10 unable to boot on live usb (busy box - initramfs)

2013-10-23 Thread John Cottier
I had a similar issue with a 13.10 live DVD. It was fine until I had a
new SATA 2TB drive, then I could not run or install from the DVD, I just
got busybox and initramfs error and the PC was locked.

I read that this might be a SATA bios issue and the tip was to change
the SATA mode or choose RAID option, I have no SATA mode menu in mi BIOS
(Dell E521) for SATA so I chose the RAID option. It made no difference
for me, but then I tried disconnecting both my HDD SATA drives and
voila! it worked fine. Once installed I could plug the other HDD's back
in and its still works fine.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-12-20 Thread John Cottier
I am running 12.04 kernel 3.2.0-35-generic-pae (32 bit) on a Dell E521
AMD dual core machine. I have experienced hard locks (IE a power off
job) and partial locks (still responds to raw keyboard mode commands
Ctrl+Alt+Sys Req+r etc). The last hard lock was a few days ago. But this
is always triggered by compiz. Often compiz will crash and offer to send
a report and restart, but the locks are always triggered by this
action:- Click on Dash button, type in search characters, and then:
*click on a result*. Its always that final click (to start or spawn
somthing) that causes the lock in my case. This is an upgrade from 10.04
and I have an nvidia Geforce 210 card with the version-current updates
driver. This is my work PC, and its sad to say I have never had such an
unstable box.

[Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop

2012-10-22 Thread John Cottier
There seems to be more going on than just nvidia driver trouble. I have
just installed 12.04 64 bit on a third machine with a more modern nvidia
card (Geforce 9) and neither nouveau or nvidia driver will run unity.
Thats three fails. Just a blank desktop (wallpaper) which seems to be a
very common fault (tried most of the fixes). 3D drivers are working
fine, excellently in fact. So it seems to be a compiz or unity bug.

2012-05-14 Thread John Cottier
This bug affect me too. It happened after an update. I noticed the alert sounds
where really quiet so I turned them up in sound preferences. At the next boot I
realised that the login volume was now 100% (distorting), but after login
finished returned to normal volume. I disabled the drum login sound a while

not nice in an office environment (this is my work machine). My PC is a Dell

Re: [Bug 989793] Re: blank screen on startup

2012-05-08 Thread John Cottier
Hi Steve, I am not sure about EFI. My PC is not at all new (Dell E521)
and it seems to have a standard BIOS to me. The only slightly unusual
thing is that I boot it from an external USB hard drive, as this is all
just experimental. My SATA drive still has 10.04 on it. Is it possible
that the system thinks I have EFI when I dont, and that is messing
things up?

On 04/05/12 21:12, Steve Langasek wrote:

What's unusual here is that FB_VISUAL_TRUECOLOR is exactly the one we
 want.

Can you install the fbset package, and try running the following
 command:

sudo fbset -i

I also see in your dmesg output that this is a system that boots with
EFI. So it's possible there's a race condition here in the handoff
between the EFI framebuffer and the nouveau framebuffer, that causes
plymouth-splash to try to start too early.

2012-05-08 Thread John Cottier
I am pretty certain this PC (circa 2007) does not support EFI boot.
The service manual does not mention it, and as far I can find out, only
some Power Edge models have this.
I have no special partition for EFI either. I only have standard EXT4
partitions for root home and swap.

Can you run the 'sudo fbset -i' command mentioned in my previous mail so
we can see what it says about your video card?

No, but I forgot to re-run update-grub...Doh!
It takes about 20 seconds to boot.
I will update and run apport again.

Regards John Cottier.

The apport information shows the following kernel commandline:

Did you forget to readd the 'splash' option? That may explain why it's
consistent. It also means that if there are any kernel errors related
to trying to load the splash screen, they won't be shown in the
 attachments.

I do see this in the attached dmesg:

 [ 207.726053] [drm] nouveau :03:00.0: error fencing pushbuf: -16
 [ 207.840664] [drm] nouveau :03:00.0: cal_space: -16

But I'm assuming your machine doesn't actually take 200 seconds to boot?

[Bug 989850] Re: nvidia driver causes console freeze

2012-05-01 Thread John Cottier
This seem to be related to frame buffer mode. If I enable text mode
console in the grub script, then the console Ctrl+Alt+Fx works fine. But
when returning to the graphic screen Ctrl+Alt+F7 the screen is totally
corrupted. Moving the mouse repaints the screen back to normal. So far
it has not locked up but this maybe pure chance. Also disabling splash
in grub stops the corrupted text characters during boot. Perhaps
plymouth uses frame buffer mode too?

[Bug 989793] Re: blank screen on startup

2012-05-01 Thread John Cottier
ok, done that. This apport info was with grub reverted to default, and the
nouveau driver in use.
The behaviour is more consistent now, it always has a black screen, with a
couple of dozen high res text lines flashing up just before the login screen
(too quick to read). Same thing in reverse at logout/shut down.

[Bug 989793] Re: blank screen on startup

2012-04-30 Thread John Cottier
The apport info was run after I had installed the nvidia recommended
driver. Also I amended grub to remove splash and enable text console
(yes, I have been having fun...). If you need me to revert to the
original post install state, please let me know and I will try to get
the nouveau driver back in.

[Bug 989776] [NEW] update manager not asking for root privileges

2012-04-27 Thread John Cottier
Public bug reported:

I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 release version. Despite not selecting
install updates it spent about two hours downloading kernels, language packs
and translations. When the install was finished it later prompted to install
another 9 updates (19 MB) but would just hang on the download part. I tried
this after several reboots. The problem seems to be that it is not asking for
the password. So I tried installing Synaptic and updating from there and that
works fine.
Also, the update manager confusingly shows two icons on the unity launcher bar
as if its running twice, but actually it is only the two windows (main and
installer) for the application.

[Bug 433851] Re: Authentication dialog doesn't get focus

2012-04-27 Thread John Cottier
It is doing this on the release version of 12.04 Unity desktop with
nouveau driver.

When you start Synaptic and start typing in the password, a little box
appears in the bottom right of the screen and shows the text for the
password for all to see. Just a slight security issue! When you click to
get the focus on the password text entry, the box disappears.

[Bug 989828] [NEW] unity choose window function has bad resolution

2012-04-27 Thread John Cottier
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04 release version, 32 bit PAE kernel.

Unity 2D
Start two instances (windows) of say firefox (right click and Open a new
window) . Click on the firefox icon on the unity toolbar. It shrinks both the
windows so you can choose which instance (window) you want.
This works fine with unity 3d using the nouveau driver, but in unity 2D the
windows are blurred with a terrible jagged low resolution making them
unreadable.
I have a nVidea Geforce 7300 LE card, with a 1680 x 1050 DVI LCD.

[Bug 989850] [NEW] nvidia driver causes console freeze

2012-04-27 Thread John Cottier
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04 release version, 32 bit PAE kernel.

When the recommended additional driver is installed (nVidia Geforce 7300 LE) is
activated unity 3d works fine. But if you press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to a console,
then you get a blank black screen.
Exiting back to graphics using Ctrl+Alt+F7, gives a corrupt screen, and when
you move the mouse the PC hard locks. No key combination will work at all. Just
press and hold the power button :-(

Also during boot up, after the same blank black screen as with the
nouveau driver appears, then after that you see a couple of seconds of
random white blocky lines with corrupted text characters (error messages
maybe).

[Bug 953919] [NEW] corrupt boot splash and terminal console with nvidia driver

2012-03-13 Thread John Cottier
Public bug reported:

The following occurs more or less the same in ubuntu 11.04, 11.10 and 12.04
beta1
I have an GeForce 7300 LE card driving a 22 1680x1050 using DVI connection on
a Dell E521
After install, the nouveau drivers work fine. After activating the default
Recommended nvidia driver the result is:-
Boot splash: Black and white blocks across the screen
Login and desktop: Normal
Ctrl+Alt+F1 etc, random coloured pixels.
Ctrl_Alt+F7, blank for several seconds then a desktop with corrupted (random
pixels) untity bar and status bar. Using the mouse to force a repaint returns
to a normal desktop.

Using the post-install driver
Boot splash: Black and white blocks across the screen
Login and desktop: Normal
Ctrl+Alt+F1 etc, blank screen.
Ctrl_Alt+F7, blank for several seconds then a desktop with corrupted (random
pixels) untity bar and status bar. Using the mouse to force a repaint returns
to a normal desktop.

Removing the nvidia drivers (back to nouveau)
Boot splash: Black and white blocks across the screen
Login and desktop: 1024x768 fuzzy distorted screen.
The display settings cannot detect the monitor, and the only options are
1024x768 or 800x600

Re: [Bug 953919] Re: corrupt boot splash and terminal console with nvidia driver

2012-03-13 Thread John Cottier
Hello Fabio,

Ok thanks. I hope you are correct, but I suspect it may be more than one
package involved. Unfortunately I do not have enough knowledge to know
if it is xorg, nvidia, compiz, unity or any other related packages.

Regards

John.

[Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop

2011-10-18 Thread John Cottier
@Ray No I have not tried startup manager since it did not work in 10.04.
I used the v86d framebuffer method to (sort of) fix that. But the none
working console issue is quite disturbing. I wonder if it is related to
the boot splash issue. IE some kernel mode that is borking something
else. I was hoping this would be sorted out in 11.10 but it looks like
maybe its 12.04 now.

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver

2011-10-18 Thread John Cottier
Exactly the same bug is still on 11.10, fresh install. But the v86d fix
does not work (blank screen) on this version so Ubuntu seems to have
regressed here. Also the consoles (Ctrl+Alt+F1 etc) do not work which
may be related, or maybe they are related to Bug #728745 I dont know. I
pin my hopes on 12.04 now I guess.

[Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop

2011-10-17 Thread John Cottier
This was my experience with a fresh install of 11.10 release version on GeForce
7300 LE :-
First login was fine, but graphical actions very sluggish (several seconds to
move a window). I presume this was the nouveau driver since it was not 2D
desktop.

When prompted to install a driver for the video card, I selected the
recommended one. After reboot this resulted in the usual garbled black
and white boot splash and after login and a blank desktop. So I reboot
and logged in with Ubuntu 2D, then selected the latest Post release
driver. After reboot, the same garbled black and white boot splash, but
the 3D desktop works. However the consoles (Ctrl+Alt+F1 etc) still do
not work. You just get a blank screen, and returning via Ctrl+Alt+F7
gives a totally corrupted screen.

2011-05-25 Thread John Cottier
Also with the Nouveau experimental 3D driver, the console (Ctrl+alt+f1
etc) does not work. You just get a non responsive screen. Ctrl+alt+f7
brings it to life again. Also plymouth still gives random black and
white stripes etc. This is not quite the most buggy Ubuntu yet (Gutsy
just dumped into a console with no X at all). But I am sick of the what
nVidia users are put through. It just goes on for years!

[Bug 782264] [NEW] PC locks solid when USB headset unplugged

2011-05-13 Thread John Cottier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: padevchooser

[Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop

2011-05-06 Thread John Cottier
There is a bug in Jockey in that once a proprietary driver has been
installed, then the Nouveau driver (Listed as Experimental 3D)
disappears never to return!. Apparently you have to uninstall and purge
the nvidia drivers and reset xorg.conf to get the Nouveau one back in
the list, so it can be activated. See
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1046504.

I am not using natty myself, just test driving it (to try out Unity
mainly). So I am happy to run debug stuff and fixes, but only with a
view to help Canonical to get natty working properly.

I did try it on natty beta2 (called experimental 3D driver in jockey driver

garbage!

I just want a working PC, proprietary drivers or open source, anything

phased out on the next release anyway. Guess I will stick with 10.04 for

[Bug 726496] Re: Cannot use Unity or Classic desktop with effects after the latest nvidia+xorg update

2011-05-04 Thread John Cottier
The appears to be yet another duplicate of Bug #728745 and others. But
this is not upgrade issue. It is a problem for certain nvidia cards that
has been there since alpha and is sadly still in the release version
from a fresh install. I have heard it maybe an nvidia driver issue, but
that does not explain the disappearing Nouveau entry in the jockey
driver list.

[Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop

2011-05-03 Thread John Cottier
Here is my nvidia bug report for the 270 (current) nvidia driver. You can do
this bug report even thought the display is apparently frozen, but you will see
no feedback at all (which is really weird).
To do this, press Ctrl+Alt+t (which invisibly open a terminal window), and wait
a few seconds.
Type carefully (as there is no feedback) sudo nvidia-bug-report (enter), wait a
few seconds
Type your password and enter

If you want to check the report has been created successfully, type
Alt+Print screen+k to kill the x server. The login using Ububtu Classic
(no effect) and you should see it in the home folder.

[Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop

2011-04-28 Thread John Cottier
Ok, yes it was updated but it took several update attempts as it kept
complaining about missing dependencies. Maybe something got borked by
the beta updates. Anyway I started from scratch using the 11.04 release
version, which I am writing from. Here is my experience:-

Fresh install on single partition, letting the installer format as Ext4.

On first boot after install, vertical black and white stripes on
upsplash with some garbles text/chars in the middle

Then at login (which now looks normal) a message box pops up to say I do
not have suitable hardware for Unity deskop, and to use Ubuntu classic.

I then activated the suggested Current driver (270 presumably but it
does not say), 173 is offered also.

On 2nd boot with this driver (Unity desktop), I can see the unity side
bar, but nothing else, mouse moves but no functionality. I use Alt+Sys
req+k to kill the x server.

Login to Ubuntu Classic, that just gives me wallpaper. But I found by
experimenting the menus are there, you just cant see them!
Restarted and activated the 173 driver (Experimental 3D Nouv driver no longer
on the list oddly).

On 3rd boot, login (now on the 173 driver) to Unity and its working fine
so far. Effects working ok, nice and crisp response. Stable so far.

When I was on the beta 2 install, the 3D Nouv driver actually seemed to
work very well, and I ran unity using that. But it is not on the
hardware driver list now, even though synaptic/software centre shows it
as installed.

I guess from this it may be possible to launch stuff via keys with the
270 driver, in order to run debug stuff. Although I may not be able to
see it! If anyone want me to try this, please let me know what commands
to run.

Just found out some bad on the 173 driver: Using Ctrl+Alt+F1-7 to get

notification area is ok, but the main wallpaper is random pixels.
Application windows are still ok though.

I have a GeForce 7300 LE and have exactly the same issue. I also get
random black and white blocks and garbled characters during boot up. I
tried the nvidia-173 driver, but this was worse for me. With the 173
driver I get the same black and white garbled stuff on the login screen
too. Also, a restart does not help. It remains garbled and black and
white until the PC is cold booted (powered off for a few seconds), so it
seems to mess up the card so bad it cannot even hard reset!

2011-04-27 Thread John Cottier
I cannot even get the nvidia drivers to work on 11.04. But have tried
the v86d fix. It is functional, but the largest mode I am allowed is
1280 x 1024 (on a 1680 x 1050 monitor). The result is a logo thats
still a bit fuzzy, and the background is sort of chequered stripes, with
a gap for the Ubuntu logo. So it works but its still a bit grotty, but
at least I don't have to look away anymore.

[Bug 711409] Re: [MASTER] -nvidia broken after Jan 31st updates, because it does not yet support xserver 1.10

2011-04-19 Thread John Cottier
I have installed the latest updates still don't see any difference on my
nvidia geforce 7300. It just produces and unresponsive desktop. Its been
this way since alpha3.

[Bug 760931] Re: Xorg freeze

2011-04-15 Thread John Cottier
Similar experience here on natty beta 2, Geforce 7300 LE, generic-pae
kernel. I just used the nvidia driver that jockey-gtk offered, and then
you get black and white video garbage during boot, then get half a
loaded desktop that is frozen. The mouse moves, and you can ctrl+alt+del
to shut it down, during which it gives more garbled text white on black
random fonts. Its was the same for alpha 3, beta 1. The experimental 3D
Nouveau driver also locks up the desktop. As yet, I have not been able
to even see what unity looks like :-(

[Bug 707135] Re: Copy text from email adds HTML tags to clipboard

2011-04-08 Thread John Cottier
I waste time due to this bug every day at work. But I have just found a
kind of work around. If you 'forward' or 'reply' to the email that you
want to copy from, and then copy from that forward/reply window, then it
does not have the html formatting on :-)

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver

2011-03-17 Thread John Cottier
To me, the point is this. Canonical draw attention to this new feature
by advertising it as an improvement. Then after the first boot, the user
is *prompted*, by the system, to install the nvidia drivers. Then it
goes all crappy. I just look away while its booting :-\

[Bug 485727] Re: gnome-screensaver incorrectly monitors activity in virtual machines

2011-02-23 Thread John Cottier
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 49579 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/49579

Yes this bug affects me too. While working in the guest, the host screen
saver is inhibited (by vmware) which is correct, but it seems that the
screensaver is unaware of any activity in the guest. So as soon as the
mouse moves outside of the guest host desktop, the screensaver
immediately starts. Insecure, and a right pain. But the bug 49579 seems
a different issue to me. I have used vmware since Feisty and never had
this issue before. But whether its a vmware bug or an Ubtuntu one I have
no idea.

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver

2010-10-11 Thread John Cottier
according to the Ubuntu 10.10 Release notes, this is currently broken
and only shows text :-(

The logo will not display during boot when using the Nvidia proprietary
driver. (653274)
