[Bug 1269992] Re: 2.02~beta2 requires manual testing
It would not install boot-repair as its not available for 14.04 64 bit yet. Tried sudo debconf-show grub-pc but did not seem to show any path. Tried sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc and it just gave a blank command line. Booted the live CD to re-install and it offered an upgrade from 14.04 to 14.04 ?!? I let it run that but it had a lot of errors with bad packages. I had a suspicion that the original install had not in fact formatted the partition to wipe 13.10 off (even though it was selected to do that). So I used gparted from the live CD to delete the partition and start install again. This worked flawlessly. I seem to remember that happening in the past too. So I am guessing that on the original 14.04 install, it actually installed over the top of 13.10 and got confused over the files left over. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1269992 Title: 2.02~beta2 requires manual testing To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1269992/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 798445] Re: can't discern between two files or folder with identical names
It seems a fundamental problem to me. Even without the duplicated name problem, its pretty important to be able to see a file path to know where is it located. [Bug 1241589] Re: ubuntu 13.10 unable to boot on live usb (busy box - initramfs)
I had a similar issue with a 13.10 live DVD. It was fine until I had a new SATA 2TB drive, then I could not run or install from the DVD, I just got busybox and initramfs error and the PC was locked. I am running 12.04 kernel 3.2.0-35-generic-pae (32 bit) on a Dell E521 AMD dual core machine. I have experienced hard locks (IE a power off job) and partial locks (still responds to raw keyboard mode commands Ctrl+Alt+Sys Req+r etc). The last hard lock was a few days ago. But this is always triggered by compiz. Often compiz will crash and offer to send a report and restart, but the locks are always triggered by this action:- Click on Dash button, type in search characters, and then: *click on a result*. Its always that final click (to start or spawn somthing) that causes the lock in my case. This is an upgrade from 10.04 and I have an nvidia Geforce 210 card with the version-current updates driver. Re: [Bug 989793] Re: blank screen on startup
Hi Steve, I am not sure about EFI. My PC is not at all new (Dell E521) and it seems to have a standard BIOS to me. The only slightly unusual thing is that I boot it from an external USB hard drive, as this is all just experimental. My SATA drive still has 10.04 on it. Is it possible that the system thinks I have EFI when I dont, and that is messing things up? [Bug 989850] Re: nvidia driver causes console freeze
This seem to be related to frame buffer mode. If I enable text mode console in the grub script, then the console Ctrl+Alt+Fx works fine. But when returning to the graphic screen Ctrl+Alt+F7 the screen is totally corrupted. Moving the mouse repaints the screen back to normal. So far it has not locked up but this maybe pure chance. Also disabling splash in grub stops the corrupted text characters during boot. Perhaps plymouth uses frame buffer mode too? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/989850 Title: nvidia driver causes console freeze To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/989850/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

ok, done that. This apport info was with grub reverted to default, and the nouveau driver in use. [Bug 989776] [NEW] update manager not asking for root privileges
Public bug reported: I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 release version. Despite not selecting install updates it spent about two hours downloading kernels, language packs and translations. When the install was finished it later prompted to install another 9 updates (19 MB) but would just hang on the download part. I tried this after several reboots. The problem seems to be that it is not asking for the password. So I tried installing Synaptic and updating from there and that works fine. Also, the update manager confusingly shows two icons on the unity launcher bar as if its running twice, but actually it is only the two windows (main and installer) for the application. ** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/989776 Title: update manager not asking for root privileges To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/989776/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop
This was my experience with a fresh install of 11.10 release version on GeForce 7300 LE :- First login was fine, but graphical actions very sluggish (several seconds to move a window). I presume this was the nouveau driver since it was not 2D desktop. When prompted to install a driver for the video card, I selected the recommended one. After reboot this resulted in the usual garbled black and white boot splash and after login and a blank desktop. So I reboot and logged in with Ubuntu 2D, then selected the latest Post release driver. After reboot, the same garbled black and white boot splash, but the 3D desktop works. However the consoles (Ctrl+Alt+F1 etc) still do not work. [Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop
There is a bug in Jockey in that once a proprietary driver has been installed, then the Nouveau driver (Listed as Experimental 3D) disappears never to return!. Apparently you have to uninstall and purge the nvidia drivers and reset xorg.conf to get the Nouveau one back in the list, so it can be activated. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1046504. I am not using natty myself, just test driving it (to try out Unity mainly). So I am happy to run debug stuff and fixes, but only with a view to help Canonical to get natty working properly. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/728745 Title: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Which Ubuntu version is that working on? I just want a working PC, proprietary drivers or open source, anything that works will do me. The appears to be yet another duplicate of Bug #728745 and others. But this is not upgrade issue. Here is my nvidia bug report for the 270 (current) nvidia driver. You can do this bug report even thought the display is apparently frozen, but you will see no feedback at all (which is really weird). To do this, press Ctrl+Alt+t (which invisibly open a terminal window), and wait a few seconds. [Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop
Ok, yes it was updated but it took several update attempts as it kept complaining about missing dependencies. Maybe something got borked by the beta updates. Anyway I started from scratch using the 11.04 release version, which I am writing from. Here is my experience:- Fresh install on single partition, letting the installer format as Ext4. On first boot after install, vertical black and white stripes on upsplash with some garbles text/chars in the middle Then at login (which now looks normal) a message box pops up to say I do not have suitable hardware for Unity deskop, and to use Ubuntu classic. I then activated the suggested Current driver (270 presumably but it does not say), 173 is offered also. On 2nd boot with this driver (Unity desktop), I can see the unity side bar, but nothing else, mouse moves but no functionality. I use Alt+Sys req+k to kill the x server. Login to Ubuntu Classic, that just gives me wallpaper. But I found by experimenting the menus are there, you just cant see them! Restarted and activated the 173 driver (Experimental 3D Nouv driver no longer on the list oddly). On 3rd boot, login (now on the 173 driver) to Unity and its working fine so far. Effects working ok, nice and crisp response. Stable so far. When I was on the beta 2 install, the 3D Nouv driver actually seemed to work very well, and I ran unity using that. But it is not on the hardware driver list now, even though synaptic/software centre shows it as installed. I guess from this it may be possible to launch stuff via keys with the 270 driver, in order to run debug stuff. Although I may not be able to see it! If anyone want me to try this, please let me know what commands to run.

[Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop
Just found out some bad on the 173 driver: Using Ctrl+Alt+F1-7 to get console gives white screen plus garbled black text/chars. Then returning to X screen on F8, the screen is badly corrupted. [Bug 768145] Re: Plymouth boot logo corrupted - shows white vertical stripes
This does the same for me with Geforce 7300 LE. Also the console (Ctrl+Alt+F1-7) is similarly corrupted. [Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop
I have a GeForce 7300 LE and have exactly the same issue. I also get random black and white blocks and garbled characters during boot up. I tried the nvidia-173 driver, but this was worse for me. With the 173 driver I get the same black and white garbled stuff on the login screen too. Also, a restart does not help. It remains garbled and black and white until the PC is cold booted (powered off for a few seconds), so it seems to mess up the card so bad it cannot even hard reset!
[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver
I cannot even get the nvidia drivers to work on 11.04. But have tried the v86d fix. It is functional, but the largest mode I am allowed is 1280 x 1024 (on a 1680 x 1050 monitor). Similar experience here on natty beta 2, Geforce 7300 LE, generic-pae kernel. I just used the nvidia driver that jockey-gtk offered, and then you get black and white video garbage during boot, then get half a loaded desktop that is frozen. The mouse moves, and you can ctrl+alt+del to shut it down, during which it gives more garbled text white on black random fonts. Its was the same for alpha 3, beta 1.
