Re: [Bug 1792802] Re: HP G7 Laptop Display rotated without input.. cannot open the display settings to rotate back to horizontal

2018-09-16 Thread L R Bellmore Jr (Bob)
Thank you Gunnar.. but the rotation occurred while I was watching a
video streaming program.  I had not touched the keyboard.  Then
following the instructions to change the rotation, the actual screen
allowing me to do so would not open... never did after 5 or more tries.
It just looped back to instructions.

[Bug 1792802] Re: HP G7 Laptop Display rotated without input.. cannot open the display settings to rotate back to horizontal

2018-09-16 Thread L R Bellmore Jr (Bob)
I am communicating from my W10 HP i7 laptop which is my main laptop
because we have one software program that must and only runs on Windows.
It is critical to our licensing/business. The HP g7 laptop is a backup
running Ubuntu. I would prefer to have all my office computer systems
on Ubuntu but I have one program that will only run on Windows. I have
not tried it in a virtual machine yet. That is next step for trying to
transition to Ubuntu completely. I have 3 desktops and 1 laptop running
W10 and this laptop on W10 because of the one software program that I
need for business production. I can't run it on the Ubuntu laptop.
There are major suppliers who run the specific software on virtual
machines but you must be a high volume user of the software to afford
their virtual systems running this sofware... so I am stuck with
Windows.

I note importance undecided... well it is extremely important to me.. this is a
computer used for business. It backs up my other laptop which is running
windows 10.. which I also detest. I love Linux/Ubuntu except for these
hazards. I should never be an early adopter.

[Bug 1792802] Re: HP G7 Laptop Display rotated without input.. cannot open the display settings to rotate back to horizontal

2018-09-16 Thread L R Bellmore Jr (Bob)
Rebooted a 3rd time and it restored to normal orientation. I am leaving
this page open to see how long it takes before it rotates again.. I had
rebooted twice before and it maintained the clockwise rotation. I am
going to go back to the same website I was on before .. it is a video
streaming of a live program. It took about an hour before it rotated.
So I saw most of the live program before the screen rotated.

[Bug 1792802] [NEW] HP G7 Laptop Display rotated without input.. cannot open the display settings to rotate back to horizontal

2018-09-16 Thread L R Bellmore Jr (Bob)
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 18.04 upgrade from Ubuntu 16.04

Absolutely frustrated.. 16.04 was working fine. 18.04 upgrade yesterday
was fine till I logged in this AM. Screen rotated to the right. I have
followed all the Desktop Guide Settings but the change the resolution or
rotation when clicked on takes me back to Desktop Settings Displays and
Screen. It then requires that I click on Activities which when I do, it
takes me back to the Activities overview..I type in Display and it takes
me back to the list with Display and Screen. I click on that and the
same steps come up. I never get a screen to restore the rotation. I
have found a screen at one point where I can change resolution but it
does not have the ability to change the rotation. EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED.
I have gone in circles for over a half hour.. or more..upgraded from
16.04 9-15-18. Turned off computer over night and when after booting
up, screen automatically rotated clockwise and I am currently unable to
restore to it's proper position. This computer is a HP G7 AMD Chip
17.3" laptop. Your pkgname instruction doesn't work in the terminal. I
am getting a very stiff neck having to hold my head sideways to access
the computer.. I am so angry... I knew I should have remained on
16.04.. how do I reverse the install without destroying apps and data???

Ok, so can't you just go in to ubuntu software manager [if you installed
it which it runs fine on server after install] and go to History and
remove it there or could do a sudo apt-get [--purge] remove with purge
it removes all configs as well as the pack with no purge it remoes the
package, BUT leaves the config files in place.

 apt-get --purge remove {package-name}

If not sure what the package is named try to search using apt-cache as
in the below examples. Once found then run apt-get --purge remove with
the package name [apt-cache uses package name ONLY [not the .deb part]]

Search for package or package description

Some times you don't know package name but aware of some keywords to
search the package. Once you got package name you can install it using
 apt-get -i {package-name} command:

 apt-cache searchText-to-search
 apt-cache searchhttpd
 apt-cache searchweb server
 apt-cache searchweb server|grep something

Just upgraded both 32 and 64 bit ubuntu. 32 bit is 12.04 and 64 bit is
12.10. Both oracle virtual boxes do not work .. have the same error
message... as I am listing below ..except referencing the new updates..

here is related bug on 12.10.. installed Virtual Box Manager and setup
XP machine.. and here is the error report...

ailed to open a session for the virtual machine LRBJR-XP-64.
The virtual machine 'LRBJR-XP-64' has terminated unexpectedly during startup
with exit code 1.

The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or
there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the
kernel module by executing

'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'

as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the
DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and
recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary.

lrbjr-dv7-64@lrbjrdv764-HP-Pavilion-dv7-Notebook-PC:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv
setup
[sudo] password for lrbjr-dv7-64:
 * Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules [ OK ]
 * Uninstalling old VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules [ OK ]
 * Trying to register the VirtualBox kernel modules using DKMS Error! Your
kernel headers for kernel 3.5.0-21-generic cannot be found.
Please install the linux-headers-3.5.0-21-generic package,
or use the --kernelsourcedir option to tell DKMS where it's located

 * Failed, trying without DKMS
 * Recompiling VirtualBox kernel modules
 * Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong
lrbjr-dv7-64@lrbjrdv764-HP-Pavilion-dv7-Notebook-PC:~$

the fix is listed above.. I am going to apply to both computers .. if
there is correction or failure, I will note... but I believe what I
posed above as the fix will resolve this again without reinstalling the
virtualbox..

 hi Guys!

If you take a look at the associated Debian bug you'll see there not
very much another choice currently than to to use the package that is
provided from virtualbox.org, currently it's version 4.2.6 Especially if
you need to work with your VM's.

The other option could be to install an older mainline kernel...
 something like 3.2.nn

I did not want to duplicate this bug to the one mentioned above, since
this would cut the no. of affected users the bug-heat to my opinion.

Apologies that I have no better news, but it's better than sitting
 between 2 chairs.

The virtual machine 'LRBJR-XP-64' has terminated unexpectedly during startup

there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the

DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and
recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary.

[Bug 773018] Re: Wireless RA2860 doesnt associate when on Natty

2011-04-30 Thread L R Bellmore Jr (Bob)
I reported a question with similar issues... however, Natty doesnt
recognize the Broadcom hardware. I deleted the original proprietary
software and reinstalled. Still didnt work. I used a bootable CD/DVD
with 10.04 on it and it recognizes the hardware.. The broadcom hardware
with the proprietary software was working on the most recent 64bit
version of Ubuntu before the update to Natty Narwhal...

Theodotos Andreou said on 2010-12-22:

I mean the Ubunti relase version. From the kernel version you mention above it
looks like a testing Ubuntu release. Unless you are a tester or bug squasher I
would suggest to switch to a stable Ubuntu version (10.04 recommended, 10.10 OK)
L R Bellmore Jr (Bob) said on 2010-12-22:

I was asked to test this version by the developers as the stable version of
Ubuntu AMD64 had a problem whereby the keyboard of my computer didn't work on
the stable install. The developers of the testing Ubuntu release asked me to
install it and see if the keyboard issue was resolved. It was. I have continued
to work with this release to see if it continues to work with my laptop. This
update gives me this error..and won't load..I really have been impressed with
the AMD64 version and want to assist in the continuation of it's development. I
have 2 HP laptops.. the other is my office unit and I have 2 desktops. My
eventual goal is to convert all my computers to Ubuntu and help in the
development (my hobby)...
L R Bellmore Jr (Bob) said on 2010-12-22:

I have a partition on this computer which is running the stable version of

of the 64 bit version as both of my laptops are 64bit machines..
Theodotos Andreou said 10 hours ago:

Then the only thing to suggest is file a bug report regarding this since
this is probably a bug in the testing realease.

solved - doesnt matter on the kernel -32 bit or 64 bit... the boot goes

I can tell before I go beyond the point of no return?

[Bug 680034] Re: Keyboard not Recognized AMD64

2010-12-01 Thread L R Bellmore Jr (Bob)
Never mind.. partitioning the hard drive... keyboard appears to work so
far.. will continue the tests you requested later... but right now it is
partitioning for the AMD64 install.. appears that it is going to work
fine.

[Bug 680034] [NEW] Keyboard not Recognized AMD64

2010-11-22 Thread L R Bellmore Jr (Bob)
Public bug reported:

Running Ubuntu from live CD ISO downloaded from Ubuntu site... loads
up.. everything works but the keyboard. Input not recognized from
keyboard on bootup from ISO CD on either DV6225 or DV7-1452nr HP laptop
computers. AMD64 version. I have i386 installed on DV6225 which is a
AMD64 and works fine... the DV7 is a newer AMD64 chip and neither will
accept keyboard input running from the ISO CD. ISO Boots up fine, but
install does not recognize the keyboard.

** Affects: ubuntu
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
