[Bug 259698] Re: pptp vpn service stops unexpectedly

2017-01-30 Thread Luigi R.
By using MPPE encryption in NetworkManager, PAP CHAP and EAP are automatically
grayed out leaving only MSCHAP and MSCHAPv2 active.
This configuration does not work returning the error message PPTP service has
stopped that everyone here is facing.

A workaround that works for me is to deactivate MSCHAP as well.

[Bug 1654832] [NEW] Network manager shows virtual vmnet interfaces

2017-01-08 Thread Luigi R.
Public bug reported:

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
Release:16.04
Codename: xenial
Kernel: 4.4.0-57-generic(x86_64)

network-manager-gnome v. 1.2.0
network-manager v. 1.2.2

I have just installed Ubuntu 16.04 and I have noticed that virtual interfaces
created by vmware player such as vmnet1 and vmnet8 are shown in the nm-applet
as not managed deviced and recognized as Ethernet connection. Is that behaviour
expected? It was not the case for Ubuntu 14.04.

nmcli dev

vmnet1 ethernet non gestito --
vmnet8 ethernet non gestito --

So far I did not find a way to hide them. Moreover the full name of the
pci card is also shown for the real ethernet interface eno1:

Guys I do not understand why I do not have the problem anymore on my
ubuntu 14.04. The file icon behaves how it should be (opening all
minimized windows and middle click to open a new window). I would like
to understand what I have changed (maybe in compiz) that makes
everything fine.

I'm planning to update my distro soon but before doing it I would like
to investigate what is different from you.

I have the same problem. I have noticed it using Skype 4.3.0.37 on

[Bug 1327539] [NEW] Yagf package corrupts fglrx module

2014-06-07 Thread Luigi R.
Public bug reported:

On 64bit machine the fglrx installer assume that you /usr/lib64
directory is linked to /usr/lib. I believe this is a bit risky
expecially for those package that are still writing in /usr/lib64.

Last week I have installed yagf from the repository, which I guess
overwrote the /usr/lib64 folder and after rebooting fglrx was not
working anymore (low graphic mode error).

After several attempts I found the origin of the problem.

[Bug 1295994] Re: Unable to use Printscreen Button on Ubuntu 14.04 in GNOME Shell

2014-06-07 Thread Luigi R.
HP DV6 same problem. I do not think the bug is due to gnome-screenshot
but it a problem of the keyboard map. STAMP is not recognized at all.
First I noticed I was not able to use altgr+STAMP REISUB anymore, now
the screenshot.

I have changed the shortcut for the screenshot to alt+h for instance and
it works fine.

If I open system settings-keyboard and then I click on the small
keyboard icon I notice that the stamp button is not highlighted when I
press it.

The keyboard and Sysrq ware working fine on Ubuntu 13.04 for sure

2014-04-30 Thread Luigi R.
I had the problem in Ubuntu 13.04 but not anymore in Ubuntu 14.04. I
believe it could related to the way how you mount it. I will check the
fstab as soon as I will be back at home.

[Bug 666238] Re: File-roller An error occured during the addition of files to the archive

2014-02-22 Thread Luigi R.
Please re-open this bug. It has not been fixed. I have exactly the same
problem on ubuntu 13.04.

This is the error message from the terminal:

** (file-roller:16278): WARNING **: Errore nel creare il collegamento
simbolico: File già esistente
 Error
creating the symbolic link. File already exist

The of course does not exist yet.

How to reproduce:

1) compress in rar whatever folder (es: X)
2) double click on X.rar
3) double on on X directory
4) Click on add file

An error message will show up.

Annoying workaround: Double click on X.rar and add the file directly
there, then cut and copy inside X folder.

** Changed in: file-roller (Ubuntu)

2013-12-07 Thread Luigi R.
Sorry for the delay. Here are both grub.cfg and default/grub. Today I
have modified directly the default file and update. Nothing happened,
nothing appears on the screen. it seems that the pendrive is unreadable.

Why syslinux is working and not grub. Should I try lilo? Am I the first
one with this issue?

[Bug 1245147] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 does not boot from USB stick 3.0

2013-11-26 Thread Luigi R.
Thanks Phillips for answering.

Could you help me to understand what the installer is writing to the
mbr? Is grub itself or just something that tell to the bios in which
partition it can find grub?

In the past I used to create a /boot partition, what did it contain?
Grub?

All these question because today I have tried to boot the USB on another
machine with BIOS UEFI in legacy mode and it was able to read it
properly.

I have formatted the key and generated the table partition several time
in msdos under gpated or directly from the installer but it always
starts from sector 32. Reading around this should not happen with those
new tools, isn't it?

How can I force the first sector position? what about using gtp? I do
not now if old bios (~2yrs old machine) can read it.

Moreover if each sector is 512 bytes and 32 is the first partition why
do you say that there is not enough space? The mbr is 512bytes usually,

Ok I created from scratch the partition in gparted and you are right
they start from 2048 now. I think the previous partition table have been
created by a tool that generate bootable usb using syslinux.

I have checked the first file I have posted RESULTS.txt which refers to
fedora and at that time the first partition was 2048 and I had also
problem.

I have tried with shift but nothing the machine still hangs.

Holding SHIFT it appear GRUB loading. and nothing else.

From a live version I have mounted /dev/sdb1 on /mnt , modified
/mnt/boot/grub/grub.cfg and launched update-grub2.

After the restart the same behavior but I noticed that grub.cfg have
been overwritten again (as the original one) . Should I modify
/default/grub or it is necessary to reinstall grub in the mbr after the
modification on grub.cfg not only update it?

Thanks for your time

This is the output of the script concerning Ubuntu 13.10 installed on
the USB 3.0 as classical installation.

What look strange to me is that grub is not located at the first sector
of the /sdb device. Is that normal?

Why is not possible anymore to install the /boot partition in fat32?

Thanks

Ok I will do it. For the moment I have tested again the Ubuntu Live
installed on the same usb stick and I can boot from it. But I believe
it is using syslinux and not grub. At least I know it is not a bios

Please find attached the new Results_UbuntuLiveUSB.txt which concern the

[Bug 1245147] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 does not boot from USB drive formatted in ext4

2013-11-03 Thread Luigi R.
I have also tried to separete the boot partition in ext2 since fat32 is
not allowed but nothing. Magenta screen hangs and if I hold shift during
boot I can see GRUB LOADING on the screen and nothing happens.

I have also tried what someone suggested here
http://askubuntu.com/questions/87409/i-cant-get-grub-menu-to-show-up-
during-boot unsuccessfully.

** Package changed: ubuntu = grub2 (Ubuntu)

** No longer affects: grub

** Summary changed:

- Ubuntu 13.10 does not boot from USB drive formatted in ext4
+ Ubuntu 13.10 does not boot from USB stick 3.0

** Description changed:

I have tried to perform a normal installation of ubuntu 13.10 on a

+ usb3.0 stick sandisk 16Gb, formatted ext4.

I do not how to provide you more information since grub does not even
start and a violet screen hangs. I was suspecting a corruption of the
usb mbr and I have tried updating directly the grub the I have on the
hard disk used by ubuntu 13.04 and windows 7 with the key plugged in but
again just violet screen and everything hangs.

If I create a live usb in fat32 I do not have any problem. Could you
please verify if there is a bug in ext4?

Before on the same usb I had Ubuntu 13.04 but in UEFI mode since I was
using a netbook UEFI. Now for sure I have a bios legacy and for this
reason I have removed everything to reinstall ubuntu 13.10 in the mbr.

The usb key has been formatted in gparted recreating again the partition

[Bug 1245147] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 does not boot from USB stick 3.0

2013-11-03 Thread Luigi R.
Please find attached the result. The usb driver is sdb and for a test
today I tried ti install fedora but it did not solve the problem. On
another machine, bios efi with bios legacy enabled I have been able to
boot from the usb 3.0. So I'm suspecting a bios limitation of my
notebook HP DV6 6030el.

But I'm sure that at the beginning I was able to boot the live from the
same usb stick. I have also tried to delete the mbr manually then
excuting install-mbr to create a new mbr.

[Bug 1245147] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 does not boot from USB drive formatted in ext4

2013-11-02 Thread Luigi R.
I have tried again performing another installation from the CD-rom but
again grub does not start. The usb light is flashing few times and then
it stops.

I forgot to say that the usb is 3.0. Could be the problem? But why the
live installed on the same key it is working? Does grub depends on the
i915 or radeon drivers?

[Bug 1245147] [NEW] Ubuntu 13.10 does not boot from USB drive formatted in ext4

2013-10-27 Thread Luigi R.
Public bug reported:

I have tried to perform a normal installation of ubuntu 13.10 on a
usb3.0 drive sandisk 16Gb, formatted ext4.

The usb key has been formatted in gparted recreating again the partition
table in msdos as follow:

Le voci nella tabella delle partizioni non sono nello stesso ordine del
disco.

[Bug 859539] Re: usb-creator-gtk fails to install bootloader: System policy prevents installing the bootloader

2013-10-26 Thread Luigi R.
It is affecting me in both raring and saucy. Under raring apparently I
did not have a crash of the application when writing the bootloader by
creating again from scratch the table partition of the usb key in
gparted, formatting it in fat32 and setting the flag to boot.

But it seems that it not writing anything I'm still not able to boot
from it.

I'm suspecting a problem in grub in ubuntu 13.10 iso. I have downloaded
it several times. The first time I have tried I have been able to
create a bootable usb and then I tried to install saucy on another usb
key as standard installation but grub was not showing up at the startup.

[Bug 1224141] Re: Acpi problem??? and fan do not work properly

2013-09-12 Thread Luigi R.
I'm currently on Kernel 3.10.11 all the sensors are detected well. The
fan is working fine I cannot almost hear it because the temperature is
44°. I never had this low temperature on linux and I'm very happy about
the kernel 3.10.

I was moving to 3.11 because of the patches introduced for the amd card.

As I mentioned before I noticed something strange from the beginning in 3.11.
Could be related to the radeon card that have not been turned off properly.
The backlight command didn't work and I'm suspecting also vgaswitcheroo had
some problem.

Yesterday before the compleate shut down of the fan I had the impression
that it was doing start and stop sequentially but it could be that the
temperature for some reason was raising quickly.

[Bug 1224141] Re: Acpi problem??? and fan do not work properly

2013-09-12 Thread Luigi R.
So far I did not have any problem with the fan on this laptop. And the
temperature just using the i915 stays always low. I have already
contacted HP support and this weekend I 'll clean the fan. I will keep
the kernel 3.10.11 to see if I will have the same problem.

[Bug 1224141] [NEW] Acpi problem??? and fan do not work properly

2013-09-11 Thread Luigi R.
Public bug reported:

Laptop DV6 6030EL

I have installed recently the new kernel 3.11 on ubuntu 13.04 to solve
some problem with the radeon card and improve the support of i915. From
the beginning I have noticed something strange, some sensors from
psensor did not show up as for instance the lmsensor radeon pci or the
coretemp, the backlight was again set to the maximum value while usually
what I do is:

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=acpi_backlight=vendor
sudo gedit /etc/rc.local
echo 3000 /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

The radeon sensor in kernel 3.10.10 was showing -128 since I have turned
off it by doing

sudo gedit /etc/rc.local
modprobe radeon
sleep 1
echo OFF /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
exit 0

With the new kernel at the startup the temperature was much higher than
usual and backlight was not set to the right value. The biggest issue
with the new kernel is the fan stops to work or in some case seems to
lose power (like start and stop). I have switched back to 3.10.10 but
this bug could be very critical. I did not noticed the problem
immediately and the laptop was almost burning.

Has someone noticed similar problem on the new kernel?

Thanks

I do not think this is what you want. I have installed some Launchpard

Anyway I would like to remove this kernel as soon as possible I do not

[Bug 1068404] Re: Low graphics mode in muxless hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade

2013-06-04 Thread Luigi R.
Thanks Rafael!!!. Usually I do not have any xorg.conf or xorg.conf.d.
xorg.conf is the one that comes from aticonfig. Should I put those lines
in the xorg.conf created by the catalyst driver?

ps: I have tried to install the beta version 13.6 using the user
interface but the installation does not start complaining about adapter
not supported while I have seen it in the list (HD6470M). Maybe I should
switch the discrete card on with vgaswitcheroo before doing it.

2013-05-25 Thread Luigi R.
suggestion #9 solves partially the problem because introduces others. I
try to explain what happens in the Output audio page :

kernel 3.8.0-22:
Devices: Speakers + Analog output (no Headphone when they are connected. To
make it work I have to unmute the speaker through alsamixer)

kernel 3.8.0-22+#9:
Devices: Digital output(S/PIDF) + Analog output + Headphone if they are
connected. The fix solves the headphone problem but the volume is low I think
because the output is Analog output and no output at all for Digital
output(S/PIDF). Sometimes the system boop up without audio because the digital
audio is selected.

kernel 3.9.2/4
Devices: Speaker (every thing is working fine and is the one I will continue to
use waiting for a bug fixing)

[Bug 1068404] Re: Low graphics mode in muxless hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade

2013-01-06 Thread Luigi R.
Clean installation (everything from quantal repository) + x-edgers
packages which include kernel 3.7 and xorg-intel + fglrx-updates = low
graphics mode.

Instead by using fglrx my graphics card is not recognized by aticonfig.

Too many reboot recently...I went back to the default configuration
(i915+radeon driver used just to turn off the Ati card).

I will try again in the future maybe when my ati will not be supported
anymore and my laptop become too old enough to be replaced by other one
with nvidia card.

It is absurd, when we buy a card we pay also the support that open-
source users never receive :-(

[Bug 1068404] Re: Low graphics mode in muxless hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade

2013-01-06 Thread Luigi R.
Thanks, just one question: is your fglrx based on the catalyst 12.10 or
lower? Before 12.10 my card was not supported and maybe also the package
on x-edgers is based on an older driver.

Mine was just a test for Nick to verify if the package xorg-intel coming
from this ppa was able to run both fglrx-update(12.10) and i915/radeon
driver. For the moment just the patch from Nick is working in my case
with fglrx-update not considering the problem that introduce with
i915/radeon.

Ps: I have noticed that in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/10fglrx we export
LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH as well as LD_LIBRARY_PATH, why after the reboot the
first variable is exported properly and LD_LIBRARY_PATH is always empty
on Ubuntu by default? Is it unset somewhere?

Please remind that the workaround proposed in #1 by installing xserver-

[Bug 1068404] Re: Low graphics mode in muxless hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade

2013-01-05 Thread Luigi R.
Yes, your package works with fglrx (catalyst 12.11) but as soon as I
removed everything to perform a clean installation of the driver
following the steps on the unofficial forum :

sudo sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev*
If you plan on using open-source drivers, you will need to reinstall some
packages because Catalyst overwrites or diverts some key 3D libraries with
proprietary versions. For more information on this issue, see this Ubuntu wiki
page
sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri
xserver-xorg-core
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup
sudo rm -rf /etc/ati

but keeping your xserver-xorg-video-intel I started to have a problem
getting the low graphics mode windows

[Bug 1068404] Re: Low graphics mode in muxless hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade

2013-01-05 Thread Luigi R.
By installing the catalyst driver with the default xserver-xorg-driver-
intel I have the problem mentioned on this bug. Instead using your patch
will solve the problem concerning the fglrx but if the user would like
to remove the proprietary driver and restore the previous one, he needs
to remove also your patch otherwise he will get low graphics mode. I was
not able to login till I restored the original xserver-xorg-driver-
intel.

PS: the radeon package will come with xserver-xorg-video-ati

In addition I have a segmentation fault shutting down the machine if
igpu is active. Please have a look below. In parallel I will update the
bug http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=460 because I think it is more
a fglrx problem

[Bug 1068404] Re: Low graphics mode in muxless hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade

2013-01-05 Thread Luigi R.
I have removed everything and started from scratch but using this time
fglrx-updates instead of the beta version from the amd website to see if
I can get rid of the segmentation fault. I will let you know after some
test.

What I did so far:

sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx-amdcccle
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx-updates fglrx-amdcccle-updates
sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-intel
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel
sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri
xserver-xorg-core
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
sudo rm -rf /etc/ati

reboot the machine, then:

sudo apt-get install fglrx-updates fglrx-amdcccle-updates
sudo gedit /etc/X11/Xsession.d/10fglrx and add /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri
sudo dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.20.9-0ubuntu2+andrik2_amd64.deb
sudo aticonfig --initial

Same problem on quantal. I didn't have any problem on precise. Now I
cannot shut down anymore. I need to hold the power button but I am
scared for my hd. By removing quit splash I can see that / cannot be
unmonted and the system never halt. I have already tried acpi=off,
apm_poweroff=1, acpi=force but nothing is solving the problem. I have
noticed that if I don't login the system is able to shut down from the
lightdm page (so at the beginning) but as soon as at least one login is
performed is not possible anymore even if I logout before turning the
machine off

[Bug 1019347] Re: A message: mount: / is busy appears every time shutting down or rebooting.

2012-12-25 Thread Luigi R.
I think I have found the origin of my problem. First I tried to
disconnect the network before shutting down and I noticed that the
system turned off properly (even the monitor).

So I tried to put modprobe -r wl in /etc/init.d/unmountroot and it is
working too, then I removed directly the package bcmwl and keeping the
connection on the system can shutdown well although the message / is
busy is still there.

In conclusion the bcmwl-kernel-source is preventing the system to turn
off. Can someone verify if it?
