[Bug 1245147] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 does not boot from USB stick 3.0
Thanks Phillips for answering. Could you help me to understand what the installer is writing to the mbr? Is grub itself or just something that tell to the bios in which partition it can find grub? In the past I used to create a /boot partition, what did it contain? Grub? All these question because today I have tried to boot the USB on another machine with BIOS UEFI in legacy mode and it was able to read it properly. I have formatted the key and generated the table partition several time in msdos under gpated or directly from the installer but it always starts from sector 32. Reading around this should not happen with those new tools, isn't it? How can I force the first sector position? what about using gtp? Ok I created from scratch the partition in gparted and you are right they start from 2048 now. Public bug reported: Laptop DV6 6030EL I have installed recently the new kernel 3.11 on ubuntu 13.04 to solve some problem with the radeon card and improve the support of i915. From the beginning I have noticed something strange, some sensors from psensor did not show up as for instance the lmsensor radeon pci or the coretemp, the backlight was again set to the maximum value while usually what I do is: sudo gedit /etc/default/grub GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=acpi_backlight=vendor sudo gedit /etc/rc.local echo 3000 /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness The radeon sensor in kernel 3.10.10 was showing -128 since I have turned off it by doing sudo gedit /etc/rc.local modprobe radeon sleep 1 echo OFF /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch exit 0 With the new kernel at the startup the temperature was much higher than usual and backlight was not set to the right value. The biggest issue with the new kernel is the fan stops to work or in some case seems to lose power (like start and stop). I have switched back to 3.10.10 but this bug could be very critical. I did not noticed the problem immediately and the laptop was almost burning. Has someone noticed similar problem on the new kernel? I do not think this is what you want. I have installed some Launchpard library and run the command to the terminal but I do not think the error is related to the problem I'm facing. Thanks Rafael!!!. Usually I do not have any xorg.conf or xorg.conf.d. xorg.conf is the one that comes from aticonfig. Should I put those lines in the xorg.conf created by the catalyst driver? ps: I have tried to install the beta version 13.6 using the user interface but the installation does not start complaining about adapter not supported while I have seen it in the list (HD6470M). [Bug 1158909] Re: [HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC, IDT 92HD81B1X5, Black Headphone Out, Front] No sound at all
suggestion #9 solves partially the problem because introduces others. I try to explain what happens in the Output audio page : kernel 3.8.0-22: Devices: Speakers + Analog output (no Headphone when they are connected. To make it work I have to unmute the speaker through alsamixer) kernel 3.8.0-22+#9: Devices: Digital output(S/PIDF) + Analog output + Headphone if they are connected. The fix solves the headphone problem but the volume is low I think because the output is Analog output and no output at all for Digital output(S/PIDF). Sometimes the system boop up without audio because the digital audio is selected. kernel 3.9.2/4 Devices: Speaker (every thing is working fine and is the one I will continue to use waiting for a bug fixing) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1158909 Title: [HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC, IDT 92HD81B1X5, Black Headphone Out, Front] No sound at all To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1158909/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1068404] Re: Low graphics mode in muxless hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade
Clean installation (everything from quantal repository) + x-edgers packages which include kernel 3.7 and xorg-intel + fglrx-updates = low graphics mode. Instead by using fglrx my graphics card is not recognized by aticonfig. Too many reboot recently...I went back to the default configuration (i915+radeon driver used just to turn off the Ati card). I will try again in the future maybe when my ati will not be supported anymore and my laptop become too old enough to be replaced by other one with nvidia card. [Bug 1068404] Re: Low graphics mode in muxless hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade
Thanks, just one question: is your fglrx based on the catalyst 12.10 or lower? Before 12.10 my card was not supported and maybe also the package on x-edgers is based on an older driver. Mine was just a test for Nick to verify if the package xorg-intel coming from this ppa was able to run both fglrx-update(12.10) and i915/radeon driver. For the moment just the patch from Nick is working in my case with fglrx-update not considering the problem that introduce with i915/radeon. Ps: I have noticed that in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/10fglrx we export LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH as well as LD_LIBRARY_PATH, why after the reboot the first variable is exported properly and LD_LIBRARY_PATH is always empty on Ubuntu by default? [Bug 1068404] Re: Low graphics mode in muxless hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade
Yes, your package works with fglrx (catalyst 12.11) but as soon as I removed everything to perform a clean installation of the driver following the steps on the unofficial forum : sudo sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev* If you plan on using open-source drivers, you will need to reinstall some packages because Catalyst overwrites or diverts some key 3D libraries with proprietary versions. For more information on this issue, see this Ubuntu wiki page sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup sudo rm -rf /etc/ati but keeping your xserver-xorg-video-intel I started to have a problem getting the low graphics mode windows -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1068404 Title: Low graphics mode in muxless hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1068404/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

By installing the catalyst driver with the default xserver-xorg-driver- intel I have the problem mentioned on this bug. [Bug 1068404] Re: Low graphics mode in muxless hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade
I have removed everything and started from scratch but using this time fglrx-updates instead of the beta version from the amd website to see if I can get rid of the segmentation fault. [Bug 1019347] Re: A message: mount: / is busy appears every time shutting down or rebooting.
The same problem with driver brcmsmac. For the moment I put nmcli nm enable false in /etc/init.d/unmountroot. In any case the message that we should get while shutting down should be umount / is busy, why is it mount? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1019347 Title: A message: mount: / is busy appears every time shutting down or rebooting. [Bug 1019347] Re: A message: mount: / is busy appears every time shutting down or rebooting.
ok thanks for explaining me how it works :-). Your suggestion is working for me and I got rid of / is busy problem. But this issue should be already fixed since network-manager 0.9.4.0-0ubuntu4, isn't it? I will add my comment there. [Bug 963106] Re: NetworkManager causes orphaned inodes

[Bug 1019347] Re: A message: mount: / is busy appears every time shutting down or rebooting.
Same problem on quantal. I didn't have any problem on precise. Now I cannot shut down anymore. I need to hold the power button but I am scared for my hd. By removing quit splash I can see that / cannot be unmonted and the system never halt. I have already tried acpi=off, apm_poweroff=1, acpi=force but nothing is solving the problem. I have noticed that if I don't login the system is able to shut down from the lightdm page (so at the beginning) but as soon as at least one login is performed is not possible anymore even if I logout before turning the machine off -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1019347 Title: A message: mount: / is busy appears every time shutting down or rebooting. [Bug 1019347] Re: A message: mount: / is busy appears every time shutting down or rebooting.
I think I have found the origin of my problem. First I tried to disconnect the network before shutting down and I noticed that the system turned off properly (even the monitor). So I tried to put modprobe -r wl in /etc/init.d/unmountroot and it is working too, then I removed directly the package bcmwl and keeping the connection on the system can shutdown well although the message / is busy is still there. In conclusion the bcmwl-kernel-source is preventing the system to turn off. Can someone verify if it? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1019347 Title: A message: mount: / is busy appears every time shutting down or rebooting. The installation of the package give this error: Module build for the currently running kernel was skipped since the kernel source for this kernel does not seem to be installed.
