[Bug 294244] Re: package totem-common 2.22.1-0ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: unable to make backup symlink for `./usr/share/gnome/help/totem/oc/figures/totem_next_button.png': No such file or dire

2008-11-25 Thread Randal Leavitt
Somehow the files

/usr/share/gnome/help/totem/oc/figures/totem_next_button.png
/usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/mimetypes/spreadsheet.svg

had both been turned into directory links, pointing at directories with
the same name. The directory pointed at seemed to be inside the one
doing the pointing. This erroneous linking seemed to descend for about
twenty levels. It was interesting to see the same problem happen in two
unrelated locations involving unrelated packages. I have no idea how
this happened. As long as this bad linking existed the two packages
could not be installed, even after purging them out and attempting to
completely reinstall them from scratch. Finally I deleted all the
erroneous links with these commands:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cd /usr/share/gnome/help/totem/oc/figures
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo rm -r totem_next_button.png
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cd /usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/mimetypes
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo rm -r spreadsheet.svg

After that I could install the packages, which I have done. Everything
seems to be running normally now.

[Bug 299329] Re: Update Manager is creating too many links

2008-11-18 Thread Randal Leavitt
I ran the following commands to delete the problematic files:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cd /usr/share/gnome/help/totem/oc/figures
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo rm -r totem_next_button.png
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cd /usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/mimetypes
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo rm -r spreadsheet.svg

The Update Manager was still telling me that two updates are available,
one for totem-common, and another for gnome-icon-theme. I then had
Update Manager apply these updates. Instead of failing like they have
always done before, they ran to completion this time, and Update Manager
ended by telling me that my system is up to date.

It appears that I have worked around the problem.

[Bug 299329] Re: Update Manager is creating too many links

2008-11-18 Thread Randal Leavitt
I tried to use Nautilus to look at the directory tree associated with
the problematic files:

/usr/share/gnome/help/totem/oc/figures/totem_next_button.png
/usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/mimetypes/spreadsheet.svg

I tried to navigate down to the end of this tree, thinking I could
perhaps delete all the excessive links. Nautilus instead reported this
error message:

**
ERROR:fm-tree-model.c:1529:fm_tree_model_ref_node: assertion failed:
(node->ref_count >= 0)
Aborted

I then took a look at a computer that still has 8.04 running on it. The
problematic files exist there as links to other files that are graphical
images. There does not seem to be anything unusual about that.

It appears that the update manager has somehow been looping and creating
symbolic links until the file system broke. I dont have any idea how
this could happen.

Can I undo the problem? I guess I would like to delete the excessive
links, but I dont seem to be able to do this with Nautilus. Is there
another technique?

[Bug 299329] [NEW] Update Manager is creating too many links

2008-11-17 Thread Randal Leavitt
Public bug reported:

Update manager always indicates to me that updates are pending for

totem-common
gnome-icon-terminal

If I try to install these updates they fail, and I think each failure
creates a symbolic link to a directory that is not needed. These
incorrect links will then cause further attempts to install these
updates to fail.

I will never be able to install these updates until I can get rid of all
these incorrect links and get back to a starting point that the update
manager expects.

When I tried to run these updates today I got this message:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-icon-theme_2.24.0-0ubuntu1_all.deb: unable to
make backup symlink for
`./usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/mimetypes/spreadsheet.svg'
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/totem-common_2.24.3-0ubuntu1_all.deb: unable to make
backup symlink for
`./usr/share/gnome/help/totem/oc/figures/totem_next_button.png'

It looks like the update manager is expecting the "spreadsheet.svg" and
"totem_next_button.png" to be regular graphical image files. Instead,
these files are now symbolic links to another directory. This is wrong.
I tried to find out what these bogus directories contain by using "ls".
The results are shown here:

I ran the "update-manager" program. It displayed a window that told me

Changes applied
Update is complete
Not all changes and updates succeeded. For further details of the the failure,
please expand the 'terminal' panel below.

Instead I clicked the "Details" button. This opened up a panel with
further information about the errors that have happened while running
the update. I wanted to copy this text into a bug report, so I
highlighted it and pushed ctrl-c to copy the text. This only brought up
a scary message telling me that I would crash my computer if I
continued. I decided not to use ctrl-c to copy the text.

ctrl-c is a pretty common convention for copy. It should be possible to
use it to report error data back to Ubuntu. The Details panel should
allow me to use ctrl-c to copy its contents.

[Bug 294244] Re: package totem-common 2.22.1-0ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: unable to make backup symlink for `./usr/share/gnome/help/totem/oc/figures/totem_next_button.png': No such file or dire

2008-11-14 Thread Randal Leavitt
Once again the "Update Manager" told me there were more updates
available today. The list included the "totem-common" package and the
"gnome-icon-theme" package. I deselected these packages and ran the
updates for the other packages listed. Those updates appeared to work
correctly - there does not seem to be any clear way for end users to
verify that updates have been successful. Anyway, I then ran the update
for the problematic packages, and this failed. A window appeared which
displayed:

An error occurred
The following details are provided:
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-icon-theme_2.24.0-0ubuntu1_all.deb: unable to

There was also an icon on the top bar of my desktop. I clicked it and
it displayed:

Sorry, the package "totem-common 2.24.3-0ubuntu1" failed to install or upgrade.

I clicked the button to report the problem, and ended up here, adding
this comment to an existing bug report. I noted that the title for this
new problem refers to "totem-common 2.22" while the error message
refers to "totem-common 2.24...". Inconsistencies like this always look
suspicious to me. Anyway, I hope this new information helps.

2008-11-12 Thread Randal Leavitt
Today the Update Manager informed me that 24 updates were available. I
started the Update Manager and deselected two of the updates: totem-
common, and gnome-icon-theme. These updates have been listed as
available for several days now and they have always failed before. I
ran the updates for the other 22 packages and this process seemed to
complete normally.

The Update Manager now reported that two updates were available: totem-
common, and gnome-icon-theme. I ran the Update Manager with these
updates selected. They failed (again). The Update Manager displayed a
screen which told me that an error had happened. The details on this
screen were:

had clearly failed). The detailed information presented in this screen was:

[Bug 292478] Re: Installing Ubuntu 8.10 Caused Several Problems

2008-11-11 Thread Randal Leavitt
I figured out how to install the latest kernel. So I am now running
using the 2.6.27 kernel.

Sounds play as expected. Everything else that I have tried has worked
too. So this system is a bit healthier now. I still have the two
updates, totem-common and gnome-icon-theme, that will not update. I
have not tried to run these updates with the 2.6.27 kernel in place -
that will be a good thing to do tomorrow.

[Bug 292478] Re: Installing Ubuntu 8.10 Caused Several Problems

2008-11-10 Thread Randal Leavitt
My "Update Manager" always states that two updates are available:
- totem-common
- gnome-icon-theme

However, I have tried to run these updates several times now, and they
always fail, so I just ignore the "Update Manager" notices about them.

Today, my "Update Manager" told me that twenty-nine updates were
available. The list included "totem-common" and "gnome-icon-theme". So
I deactived these two items, and ran the other updates. I hope this is
reasonable - I dont know if there are any dependencies between these
updates.

The update appeared to run correctly for the other twenty-seven items.

I then tried to run the updates for totem-common and gnome-icon-theme.
This failed. One of the error messages produced was:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-icon-theme_2.24.0-0ubuntu1_all.deb: unable to

backup symlink for
`./usr/share/gnome/help/totem/oc/figures/totem_next_button.png'

The Update Manager reported that the update was complete, but that
errors had occurred. The Update Manager reported the following:

And I dont seem to have the necessary files in /boot either.

As an observation, most of the files in /boot seem to be useless now. I
had assumed that the update process was keeping this directory cleaned
up. I guess not. Clearly I am glad that some old versions of the
kernel were left behind since I would be out of service otherwise. But
keeping more than five old kernels seems a bit excessive.

[Bug 292478] Re: Installing Ubuntu 8.10 Caused Several Problems

2008-11-08 Thread Randal Leavitt
These days I boot this machine by interrupting "grub" with the esc key
and choosing the 2.6.24 kernel to boot with. I do this because this
kernel allows me to play sounds when the system is up. I booted the
machine in this manner just now and then produced a file named
"dmesg_24.log" using dmesg. This file is attached as an attachment
here.

2008-11-08 Thread Randal Leavitt
If I boot this computer and let it follow its default boot sequence, it
boots up using the 2.6.25-2-386 kernel. This kernel is problematic
since it does not allow any sound to be played. I booted in this
default manner to allow me to generate a file from "dmseg" to send to
you. The file that I produced is named "dmesg_25.log". It is attached
as an attachment here.

[Bug 292478] Re: Installing Ubuntu 8.10 Caused Several Problems

2008-11-08 Thread Randal Leavitt
I noted yesterday that people who are running 8.04 are still getting
updates. One of the updates that I saw was a security update for the
kernel for 8.04 which I think is 2.6.24.

I am running the 2.6.24 kernel too because the upgrade to 8.10 did not
give me a later kernel. But I did not get a security update for this
kernel. I guess the update process thinks that I am running a complete
8.10 with a later kernel, but I am not.

2008-11-06 Thread Randal Leavitt
The "Update Manager" told me there were more updates available today.
It included totem-common and gnome-icon-theme in the list. I unmarked
these items, and the update appeared to complete as it should. I guess
I will keep unmarking these packages until I know that they are fixed.
I am also still running on the wrong kernel ie 2.6.24-21. I assume that
I will find out somehow how to upgrade to the proper kernel.

2008-11-05 Thread Randal Leavitt
The "Update Manager" told me there were 14 updates available. The list
included these problematic updates for totem-common and gnome-icon-
theme. So I tried to get all the updates. The problematic ones failed.
I think one of the other updates should have resulted in kernel 2.6.27
being placed on my system. It is not there. I suspect that all 14
updates failed but the update manager thinks that I have them. I think
that I need to repeat these updates but there does not seem to be a way
to do this.

Does this answer the architecture question? I think I am running a 32

[Bug 293211] Re: Ububtu 8.10 does not play sound with default kernel

2008-11-03 Thread Randal Leavitt
GRUB lists 2.6.25-2-386 and several versions of the 2.6.24 kernel. I
guess these are left here as a consequence of updates made previously in
8.04. I dont have a version of the 2.6.27 kernel that I can boot. The
attempt to upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10 did not run cleanly, leaving me with
one broken package "totem-common" and another package that does not seem
to be complete "gnome_icon_theme". I guess I did not get the correct
kernel either - I did not see any error messages about that, however.

[Bug 293211] [NEW] Ububtu 8.10 does not play sound with default kernel

2008-11-03 Thread Randal Leavitt
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10. As a result I have a list in GRUB
of about fifteen different kernels that I can boot. The first item in
the list, the default, is kernel 2.6.25-2-386. When I boot with this
kernel none of the video players such as VLC or gxine will play sound.
However, if I boot with the second kernel in the list, 2.6.24-21-386,
then they do play sound.

[Bug 292478] [NEW] Installing Ubuntu 8.10 Caused Several Problems

2008-11-01 Thread Randal Leavitt
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10. Several problems were reported to
me during the upgrade:

PAM reported an error - something about not being able to authenticate
with a gnome server. However, I seem to be able to log in and do
things, so I dont know how serious this is.

The screen size selected for my monitor (neovo 19) was wrong, causing a
message about input signal out of range to be permanently displayed. It
went away when I manually changed the resolution down to 1280x960.

The package totem-common_2.24.2-0ubuntu4_all.deb would not install and
ended up being a broken package. Later attempts to reinstall it also
failed. I deleted the package.

The package gnome_icon_theme_2.24.0-0ubuntu1_all.deb would not install.
This seemed to stop sounds associated with logging on. Later attempts
to reinstall this package also failed.

I tried several times to send this information to you using the
automatic problem reporting features, but they got all fouled up and I
dont know if you received the information or not. You may have several
copies of this information from me. Sorry if this caused problems - I
am not familiar with your bug reporting system.

[Bug 245072] Re: HP deskjet 920c wont print in colour

2008-07-08 Thread Randal Leavitt
I tried using the printer again, this time while capturing a log file
from the "system-config-printer" service. The test page printing did
not work - it came out in black and white instead of colour. The log
file is attached. However, I have not been able to verify that the
printer is working correctly, and I now suspect that this is a hardware
problem. It is really difficult at this end to diagnose what is going
wrong. The owner of the printer does not want to spend the money or the
time needed to fully diagnose the printer, eg buy a new colour cartridge
to see if it will work. So perhaps this bug report should be closed.

[Bug 245072] Re: HP deskjet 920c wont print in colour

2008-07-03 Thread Randal Leavitt
I went back to the Libranet distribution where the printer used to work
and tried to print there. The printer only printed in black and white
there too. It appears that something went wrong with the printer while
I was installing Ubuntu 8.04. I now suspect that this problem is a
hardware failure. I will do as much hardware checking as I can, and I
will send in a log file as requested as soon as I get a chance to test
the printer again.

[Bug 245072] [NEW] HP deskjet 920c wont print in colour

2008-07-02 Thread Randal Leavitt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

Just installed Ubuntu 8.04. The HP Deskjet 920c printer used to print
in colour when we were using Libranet, another older Debian based Linux
distribution. Now it only prints in black and white. I tried
installing "hplip" and that seemed to work partially - features for
cleaning heads dont work. However, I can still print, but only in black
and white (grayscale).

The 920c printer is recognized, and "system-config-printer" gives me a
window where I can set options for grayscale or normal printing.
Changing these options has no effect on the printer. It only prints in
black and white, ie grayscale.

[Bug 74597] slimserver has many problems

2006-12-05 Thread Randal Leavitt
Public bug reported:

The open source software from Slim Devices at

http://www.slimdevices.com/index.html

is called "slimserver". It seems to run on many other Linux and Unix
systems. However, I downloaded it onto my Ubuntu 6.10 system and the
installation script output several error messages. Slimserver itself
does not put music files into its library properly, and does not seem to
stream various kinds of music files.

I think the Ubuntu people need to talk to the Slim Devices people, just
a bit, to help get these integration issues resolved. Given that Slim
Devices is riding the wave of the next thing in personal computing,
Ubuntu would benefit a lot by being there.

[Bug 74574] Quicken 2000 did not install under Crossover from CodeWeavers

2006-12-05 Thread Randal Leavitt
Public bug reported:

I cannot get Quicken 2000 to install under Crossover from CodeWeavers.
The following table summarizes my attempts:

I have also tried to install other simple programs using Ubuntu 6.10 and
Crossover 6.0.0 beta 3 without any luck.

I think this is primarily a Crossover problem, and I have reported it to
them in depth. To date the response has been minimal.

For me this is a critical issue. I cannot move forward with Ubuntu
until I have Quicken 2000 running. It is still running on Machine A as
shown above. I am caught.

How do we get the Ubuntu and the Codeweaver people talking about this?
I can run tests, but I cannot do much that diagnose or solve this issue.
