[Bug 1568097] Re: Error messages about mdadm --incremental failing

2017-08-02 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Has anyone found any solution other than upgrading to a newer *buntu
version? Are there newer mdadm packages available for Xenial?

This bug report seems to have similar error messages, is it the same
bug? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1587142

Package gfortran is/was not installed.

[Bug 1045047] Re: Firewire camera is not recognized

2012-09-24 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
This and the fact that you already replaced the cable and also tested a
PC-to-laptop connection unsuccessfully leaves pretty much only the
conclusion that the port (or the ports) on your FW322/323 based board
are dead.

I'm very glad to hear this - the adapter is much cheaper to replace than
fix the camera :)

Thanks, will now try to find 4-to-4-pin cable to test the same stuff on
laptop. Will close the bug now. Thanks Stefan!

On connecting the camera nothing shows up in dmesg and no new devices in /dev
dvgrab shows 'Error: no camera exists'

However the camera shows 'DV IN' so at some level it recognizes the
connection.

Can you confirm that this points to HW problems in the camera?

It's just kind of hard to believe that I've broken 2 cameras more or less the
same way when trying to connect them to Linux, after they've been used for
years on Windows environments. I might be able to test the camera with another
computer at some point.

So _something_ does happen when the camera is connected!

ran modprobe raw1394, /dev/raw1394 was created, gave permissions, dvgrab
doesn`t find the camera.

I use the camera in the VTR (=player) mode, not the camera (=filming)
mode. I also try the dvgrab when camera play is on just to see if it has
any effect. I`ve understood that the camera should actually start
playing when dvgrab is run (I run it without any parameters, does it
matter?).

Nothing on laptop.

I suppose this points to defect HW? Propably the (integrated) adapter on the

How easy are these things to break?

Will try older Ubuntu later.

New kernel doesn't seem to make a difference unless that parent port

[Bug 1045047] Re: Firewire camera is not recognized

2012-09-03 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
I haven't tried it with older installations but that's also an option if
older images are still available and you feel it might be useful.

I'll download 10.04.3 first and try on USB live session what happens. If
you think I should try also newer one, let me know.

[Bug 1045047] Re: Firewire camera is not recognized

2012-09-03 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
To test the cable, I connected it between the desktop PC and a laptop.

DESKTOP machine (same HW as described above)
06:03.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): LSI Corporation FW322/323 (rev 70) (6-pin)
ubuntu 12.04LTS
3.6.0-999-generic #201209030419 SMP Mon Sep 3 08:20:00 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64
x86_64 GNU/Linux
Ran echo -1 /sys/module/firewire_ohci/parameters/debug to get more messages
to dmesg

This is what dmesg shows me when I connect and disconnect the cable twice:
[10732.425494] firewire_ohci :06:03.0: IRQ 0010 AR_req

gc=63 +0W Lci
[10770.752032] firewire_core :06:03.0: rediscovered device fw0

On connection it printed 8 lines but nothing on disconnection.

LAPTOP
03:09.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Ricoh Co Ltd R5C832 IEEE 1394 Controller (4-pin)
Ubuntu 12.04LTS
3.2.0-26-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 14 17:49:24 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64
x86_64 GNU/Linux
Ran echo -1 /sys/module/firewire_ohci/parameters/debug to get more messages
to dmesg

On connecting the cable, no messages were shown in dmesg.

However after disconnecting, lines like these start appearing:
[ 1036.782522] firewire_ohci: IRQ 0020 cycle64Seconds
[ 1100.782153] firewire_ohci: IRQ 0020 cycle64Seconds
[ 1164.781775] firewire_ohci: IRQ 0020 cycle64Seconds
[ 1228.781389] firewire_ohci: IRQ 0020 cycle64Seconds
[ 1292.781019] firewire_ohci: IRQ 0020 cycle64Seconds

The cable I use is a 4-to-6 pin one. I can't test the camera on the
laptop, for that I'd need a 4-to-4 pin one I currently don't have
available.

Will proceed to test Ubuntu 10.04.3 live.

[Bug 1045047] Re: Firewire camera is not recognized

2012-09-03 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Forgot that I haven't found a way to boot from USB on the desktop
machine (and can't understand it - doesn't it really support it or can't
I just figure out what to press..)

Anyway I booted the laptop with 10.04.3 64-bit live image and ran the
same test as above, connecting the 12.04 desktop (6-pin) and 10.04.3
laptop (4-pin).

No messages on laptop, nothing.

On desktop I again saw this:
[ 340.358583] firewire_ohci :06:03.0: IRQ 0010 AR_req
[ 340.358592] firewire_ohci :06:03.0: AR evt_bus_reset, generation 4

Please tell me which of the earlier Ubuntu versions You want me to try, I'll
burn a CD.

[Bug 1045047] [NEW] Firewire camera is not recognized

2012-09-02 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Public bug reported:

Problem:
The system doesn't recognize DV camera over firewire

System:
Fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Motherboard: Intel DG33TL
DV Camera: Sony TRV-900
Firewire adapter: 06:03.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): LSI Corporation FW322/323 (rev
70)

seems to be recognized OK:
[1.905253] firewire_ohci :06:03.0: PCI INT A - GSI 19 (level, low) -
IRQ 19
[1.960063] firewire_ohci: Added fw-ohci device :06:03.0, OHCI v1.0, 8
IR + 8 IT contexts, quirks 0x0
[2.460101] firewire_core: created device fw0: GUID 0090270002069b55, S400

On plugging in the DV camera nothing happens in dmesg, no messages.
/dev/fw0 exists all the time, dv1394/raw1394/ieee1394 are not created at any
stage

Camera shows 'DV IN' on the screen when the cable is connected and the
cam is in VTR mode.

dvgrab tells me 'Error: no camera exists'

When disconnecting / switching of the camera, the following lines appear in
dmesg:
[114691.393704] firewire_core: skipped bus generations, destroying all nodes
[114691.892030] firewire_core: rediscovered device fw0

People have reported that this both the adapter and the camera should work OK
on Linux:
Adapter: http://hardware4linux.info/component/14298/
Camera: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1188918 and
http://www.digipedia.pl/usenet/thread/18793/3402/

I have found several 'Camera not recognized by Ubuntu' messages on both
ubuntuforums and launchpad:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/670210
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/950879
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1742787
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1410418
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=784385
I have also had the same problem with different setup: Ubuntu 11.10, different
adapter and camera..
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/670210/comments/30

That is the reason I decided to go for bugrep instead of asking what I'm
doing wrong. I can't be sure it's not me or broken hardware but.. I'm
happy to assist in triaging this with my HW and hope it'll help many
others struggling with the cameras not recognized by Ubuntu / the new FW
stack.

(and I was also suggested to report a new bug instead of adding stuff to
an existing report:

[Bug 1045047] Re: Firewire camera is not recognized

2012-09-02 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Thanks Stefan!

Did that.

When connecting, I get these lines:
[159271.828275] firewire_ohci: IRQ 0010 AR_req
[159271.828279] firewire_ohci: AR evt_bus_reset, generation 156

[159271.829281] firewire_ohci: AR evt_bus_reset, generation 158

where 156..157..158 loop between 0(1?) and 255 very fast.

And after disconnecting I see this in dmesg:

[159271.830281] firewire_ohci: IRQ 0010 AR_req
[159271.830284] firewire_ohci: AR evt_bus_reset, generation 160

Does this tell anything useful?

[Bug 670210] Re: firewire_core: skipped bus generations, destroying all nodes

2012-08-29 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
I now have the following setup:
Ubuntu 12.04LTS fresh install with updates
Motherboard: Intel DG33TL
integrated FW adapter: 06:03.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): LSI Corporation FW322/323
(rev 70)
Camera: Sony TRV-900

So I've now other motherboardadapter, other camera, newer Ubuntu and I
think I also have another cable.. (see #30).

When I connect the camera, dmesg doesn't show anything. On disconnection I get
these lines:
[ 443.106496] firewire_core: skipped bus generations, destroying all nodes
[ 443.604029] firewire_core: rediscovered device fw0

[Bug 670210] Re: firewire_core: skipped bus generations, destroying all nodes

2012-08-29 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Based on this (old, I know..)
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kino/+bug/6290/comments/83 I
changed my /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-firewire.conf to

#blacklist ohci1394
#blacklist sbp2
#blacklist dv1394
#blacklist raw1394
#blacklist video1394

blacklist firewire-ohci
blacklist firewire-sbp2

and ran sudo update-initramfs -k all -u (source: http://forum.ubuntu-
fi.org/index.php?topic=41444.0)

That should disable the new stack and enable the old legacy stuff.

I restarted. /dev/fw0 was gone but I wasn't able to find anything new
there.

[Bug 576951] Re: dvgrab capture failure (miniDV)

2012-01-31 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
I'd guess this is outdated in latest releases as new firewire drivers
have replaced dv1394 and raw1394 - however with 11.10 I wasn't able to
make firewire run so I marked as being affected by this bug.

[Bug 883765] [NEW] KDM looses focus on new password entry of a new user

2011-10-30 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu 11.10 64-bit ~fresh install.

Create new user
log off
type the username pw of the new user in KDM
I get a dialog telling that a new password is needed. Clicking the button (OK?)
I'm asked for a new password. However it's impossible to write anything in the
lineedit, can't focus with mouse either.

Two other people tried this on #kubuntu-fi too and confirmed this behaviour.
It was also reported that if you press OK in the 'you need to type a new
password' window, the lineedit works normally.

This has been reported here before but then closed as
worksforme/downstream: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=264539 and
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=259649 so I thought I'd report it
here if it's a Kubuntu issue.

[Bug 883604] [NEW] Qapt can't install packages for Dragon to play DVD

2011-10-29 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Public bug reported:

Fresh Kubuntu 64-bit installation
Inserted a home-burnt DVD. Open it with Dragon, click 'Play disk'. It tells
that it can't find some (gstreamer element) packages, should we try to find
them. I click yes, it starts qapt.
ps -Af shows /usr/bin/gstreamer-codec-install --transient-for=83886098
gstreamer|0.10|dragonplayer|GStreamer element dvdspu|element-dvdspu
gstreamer|0.10|dragonplayer|GStreamer element rsndvdbin|element-rsndvdbin

All I get is a small windows progress bar (not moving), tellin
Looking for plugins. And that's it.

If I try to run the same command (that ps -Af gave) from command line, I
get

rhk@haapa:/media$ /usr/bin/gstreamer-codec-install --transient-for=83886098
gstreamer|0.10|dragonplayer|GStreamer element dvdspu|element-dvdspu
gstreamer|0.10|dragonplayer|GStreamer element rsndvdbin|element-rsndvdbin
0.10: command not found
0.10: command not found
GStreamer: command not found
GStreamer: command not foundelement-dvdspu: command not found

dragonplayer: command not founddragonplayer: command not found
element-rsndvdbin: command not found

So I guess there's something wrong in the way how Dragon calls qapt so
maybe actualy this should be reported to Dragonplayer, not qapt?

[Bug 871864] [NEW] Can't create two-directional edges: 'lost B A edge'

2011-10-10 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu 11.04
python-pygraphviz 1.0-1build1 from Ubuntu repositories.

My DOT file:
strict digraph graphName {
concentrate=true
A-B
B-A
}

it compiles OK with dot:
dot simple2.dot -Tpng:cairo:gd -o testi.png

but when I try it with pygraphviz:

#!/usr/bin/env python
import pygraphviz as pgv
B=pgv.AGraph('simple2.dot') # create a new graph from file
B.layout() # layout with default (neato)
B.draw('simple.png') # draw png

I get this:

/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.7/pygraphviz/agraph.py:1170: RuntimeWarning: Error:
lost B A edge

  warnings.warn(.join(errors),RuntimeWarning)

and the generation is aborted.

Removing or commenting the concentrate -line from the .dot file, the
output is generated but with two one-headed arrows instead of one two-
headed.

[Bug 764326] [NEW] gfortran package dependency missing

2011-04-18 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Public bug reported:

Installed package elmer on Kubuntu 10.04.2

Trying to start elmer from menu dies.
Trying elmerf90, elmerf90-nosh and elmerld from CLI also die:

kurppa@el-kone:~$ elmerf90
gfortran -I/build/buildd/elmerfem-5.5.0.svn.4262.dfsg/debian/tmp/usr/include
-fPIC -fPIC -I. -Ibinio -I/usr/include/mpi -I/usr/share/elmersolver/include
-shared

/usr/bin/elmerf90: 19: gfortran: not found
kurppa@el-kone:~$ elmerf90-nosh
gfortran -I/build/buildd/elmerfem-5.5.0.svn.4262.dfsg/debian/tmp/usr/include
-fPIC -fPIC -I. -Ibinio -I/usr/include/mpi -I/usr/share/elmersolver/include

/usr/bin/elmerf90-nosh: 18: gfortran: not found
kurppa@el-kone:~$

But after installing the package gfortran they work:

kurppa@el-kone:~$ elmerf90
gfortran -I/build/buildd/elmerfem-5.5.0.svn.4262.dfsg/debian/tmp/usr/include
-fPIC -fPIC -I. -Ibinio -I/usr/include/mpi -I/usr/share/elmersolver/include
-shared
gfortran: no input files

kurppa@el-kone:~$ elmerf90-nosh
gfortran -I/build/buildd/elmerfem-5.5.0.svn.4262.dfsg/debian/tmp/usr/include
-fPIC -fPIC -I. -Ibinio -I/usr/include/mpi -I/usr/share/elmersolver/include
gfortran: no input files

kurppa@el-kone:~$ elmerld
gfortran -shared -L/usr/lib -lelmersolver
gfortran: no input files
kurppa@el-kone:~$

To me it looks like that gfortran should be installed along elmer.

I think I bumped to the same bug on Kubuntu 10.10

[Bug 394307] Re: kphotoalbum thinks a password is already set after a fresh install.

2011-01-04 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Does this still actually happen after all updates, the current version
in the repositories is 4.1.1.

It would be good to report this to
https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=kphotoalbum and link the
report here.

Chris: KPhotoAlbum will not have a crop feature as it is not designed to
EDIT photos, only to tag and archive, but leave the photo files
untouched. And ability to move deleted photos to Trash is implemented in
the recent releases :)

[Bug 574079] Re: kpackagekit crashes on system-updates refresh after install

2010-05-05 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
I have the same problem here. Any ideas what language package is
required?

kpackagekit doesn't crash but reports of the problem.

Aere: you do know that you can also upgrade from command line:
sudo apt-get update (to fetch the list of updates)
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade (to install upgrades)

another disk works fine now - but this one doesn't. It doesn't look any
scratchy to me.. But I guess it's the disk :/

The available options are:
live - live install - check - memtest - hd - mainmenu - help

(tried help just to see if it tells something more, it just starts the
timer countdown from 30s again...)

[Bug 542292] [NEW] Add new network window size too big for 7 screens [kubuntu lucid netbook]

2010-03-19 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plasma-widget-networkmanagement

7 eeepc

Click on the knetworkmanager icon - create network connection - select
network

The 'add new network' window that opens, is too big for 7 eeepc. The OK
button cannot be seen without moving the window with alt+mouse. Bad for
beginners.

My guess is that either it's hard coded or for some reason the auto-
fullscreen scaling fails.

2010-03-13 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Andreas: see comments #5- #21, dmesg available there.
And yes, using clean Karmic kernel. -19 above but upgraded to -20 after this.

This is the computer of my sister so I don't have 24/7 access. I might
have remote access every now and then though and live.. well.. much less
often..

2010-03-10 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Had nvidia-glx-96 installed, was able to get only low resolutions. Now I
installed nvidia-glx-185 to see if it helps. Will try to come back to
report..

I still get this:

[Bug 479905] Re: VPN PPTP problem in Kubuntu Karmic Beta

2009-11-20 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
I seem to have the same problem, trying to connect over openvpn w.
username password on stable kubuntu karmic 9.10. I see the item on
knetworkmanager menu but clicking it doesn't change anything.

(also the password-field doesn't hide the password as I type it..)

[Bug 469569] Re: usb-creator format button silently fails on mounted drive

Same 64-bit 9.10 and 0.2.12 usb-creator

I have ~the same here except that it doesn't require the mounting - the
format button always fails and I can't get to the usb image creation
process..

[Bug 467669] Re: ubiquity crashes on kubuntu installation partitioning process

2009-11-13 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
I had the same with 9.10 final.

Tried to install Kubuntu 64bit from desktop image on usb flash (created
with usb-creator). When the actual installation (or partitioning, what
would I know..) starts, I get the same message.

Sorry, couldn't attach other files, I couldn't open a file manager to
find the files nor konqueror to create a bugrep..

[Bug 443185] Re: Unable to activate Broadcom b43 after STA driver

2009-11-13 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
HP dv2140eu here with broadcom. Installed Karmic 64-bit Kubuntu there.

On live, I was able to install the drivers (b43, I think, I have no idea
what's STA). I did it with no network connection, I think.

But now on installed system, with wired network I have the problems
described above. I've upgraded the system to the latest packages but
jockey usually disables the driver list wihtout actually installing
anything.

- this still seems to be an issue.

2009-11-13 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
I finally decided to install the nvidia driver and restarted the
computer - only to see that also the STA was installed and WLAN worked.
- looks like it may also have some problems showing if something's
installed or not..

[Bug 468210] [NEW] Can't play dvd (no /dev/dvd available)

2009-11-01 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kaffeine

Kubuntu 9.10 with medibuntu, partners backports activated, upgraded. I
installed Kaffeine (as Dragonplayer's a bit limited..) to play DVD:s,
but it won't work:

start kaffeine
press 'play DVD'.
stdout gives me:

g...@utberg:/dev$ kaffeine
g...@utberg:/dev$ libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 1.1.16.3 from
http://xine.sf.net
libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable.
libdvdread: Can't stat /dev/dvd
No such file or directory
libdvdnav: vm: faild to open/read the DVD
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 1.1.16.3 from http://xine.sf.net
libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable.
libdvdread: Can't stat /dev/dvd
No such file or directory
libdvdnav: vm: faild to open/read the DVD

and I get a popup telling me Cannot find input plugin for MRL [dvd:/]

/dev/dvd doesn't exist. I can create it manually but it won't help much
as I don't know how to make DVD appear there.. Also Kaffeine doesn't
have the settings menu item there - I don't know how to tell Xine to
look for /dev/scd0..

[Bug 468210] Re: Can't play dvd (no /dev/dvd available)

2009-11-01 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
sudo ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/dvd seems to help.. No idea why this is needed.
Either kaffeine should point to /dev/sr0 - or /dev/dvd should exist..

[Bug 468210] Re: Can't play dvd (no /dev/dvd available)

2009-11-01 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Changed away from kaffeine, I think udev is a better guess..

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: kaffeine
+ UPDATED DESCRIPTION:
+
+ I have two optical drives, a CD/RW drive and a DVD drive.

- Kubuntu 9.10 with medibuntu, partners backports activated, upgraded. I
- installed Kaffeine (as Dragonplayer's a bit limited..) to play DVD:s,
- but it won't work:
+ In /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-cd.rules the CD/RW-drive is binded as
+ /dev/cdrw and /dev/cdrom in and the DVD-drive is binded as cdrom1 and
+ dvd1 - even though there's only one DVD drive. This causes programs, for
+ example Kaffeine, to fail play DVD's from the DVD drive.
+
+ So changing /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-cd.rules to mount CDRW to
+ cdrw and cdrom1 and DVD to cdrom and dvd thigs started working again.
+
+ It think this has nothing to do with Kaffeine so I'll try to change the
+ description etc in this bug report respectively...
