I'm not sure I saw it pass yet. But I wanted to note that removing the network-manager and network-manager-gnome all together and switching back to good old config files /etc/network/interfaces is a workaround for this problem as well. see also: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=511182 I am facing (faced) the same problem and solved it this way. My case: Asus P5K Pro (Marvell88E8056® PCIe Gigabit LAN controller featuring AI NET2) Ubuntu 10.4.1 amd64 I think I had the problem before without it leading to trouble, probably due to the fact in before cases that part of the network wasn't used if the perpetrator was powered down. [Bug 597753] Re: Entire UI(Gnome+apps) behaves like shift button is continually pressed
Ok, The issue still occurs with the GDK fix disabled. I must note however that the same fix is in place in order for flash to work decently https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin- nonfree/+bug/410407 and most of the time some flash stuff is running in the back due to an open browser. Still most cases of occurrence is in eclipse and while using left hand shortkeys (like ctrl+space). I'm still uncertain about the undo effect. I'm not sure if it is the only case when it occurs, but most of the times it seems to be triggered while using auto completion (ctrl+space) in Eclipse. Currently I'm using Eclipse 3.5.1 downloaded independently (not from Ubuntu repository). [Bug 292588] Re: VirtualBox can't operate in VMX root mode.
Hmm, some looking around has made me think this is an error in the qemu-kvm packaging. Removing qemu-kvm should remove the qemu-kvm upstart job (which actually loads the module). Qemu can run without kvm, but then it isn't using hardware virtualization. This could be a solution for people only using qemu sporadically. People who want to keep the option of hardware qemu could modify /etc/init/qemu-kvm.conf changing start on runlevel [2345] to #start on runlevel [2345] effectively disabling this line. [Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
@Pako Watched the screencasts so I could make somewhat of fair judgment. As far as I can tell window management buttons are still on the right :P. I'm kidding, though again I think even here I can generalize. I'd say Gnome 3.0 shell allows you to keep your old basic habbits, window management on the right, taskbar, some sort of menu, but allows you to extend them. I even deem it possible my mother wouldn't be confronted with any of the new features. Fact of the matter is, I was actually planning to upgrade that PC to Lucid and then stick with the LTS while it was supported. ;) Look, I'm not saying that an OS should be designed with 62 year old ladies in mind. But changes that impact very basic computer interaction patterns for some reason feel like they outweigh others by far. Things change in Gnome 3.0, but as far as I can tell they seem to be respecting the basics. And, changes that are there seem to have reason. Don't change things for the sake of change, or to differentiate. Make changes because they make improvements. [Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
Let me mark the marketing in that statement: -differentiate is important -Better cars (Sprot-Cars, expensive Cars) moved the gearshifts to the steering wheel -Apple slogan is: Think different ... and First and last are pretty much the same. A comment on that better cars though. Euhm, a lot of these cars have the gear paddles to give 55 year old midlife crisising men that can afford them, an F1 feeling. Afaik, rally cars have the gear in the middle. F1 cars have it on the wheel because there's no other place to put it. That said, I chose brake and throttle with that in mind and because they are more essential. Concerning Ubuntu's marketing, last time I checked, it was something like, linux for human beings (that would include 62 year olds) and not Think different... (which till tis day is actually implied when using linux, so no need to shout about it :P) . So much for marketing, what about good science. Is it true improvement? My cursor doesn't spend most of its time in the top left, it's pretty much all over. Which seems logical when you're an intensive interleaved keyboard mouse user. But maybe we should postpone the shouting about science and senselessness until Ubuntu has a Mozilla FF Testpilot alike feature and we have real metrics. [Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
As the debate is still alive and kicking, let met drop in example of an argument that has surely passed the board. (What about novice users, and their willingness to migrate) About a month ago I migrated my 62 year old mothers PC (pretty much used for PC-banking only), from XP tot Karmic. Something I would never have considered before Ubuntu times. Anyhow a long story short, the transition form XP to Karmic went quite smoothly, no complaints so far. I am afraid however, if I'd migrate that home PC from Karmic to Lucid, without putting back these buttons where they were, the first question would be to go back to Windows. I think thats a fear easily generalized. Moving those buttons will reduce the likelihood that people actually migrate from the most used desktop OS so far. I'm not even sure I would have gone Ubuntu all the way a few years ago, with those buttons over there. I may not be a kernel hacker, but as a computer science engineering graduate I wouldn't qualify myself a novice ;) -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 382626] Re: Nautilus location bar toggle icon implies unrelated function
@David: Yes, I found the ctrl+L keys. Only, it's not a toggle. But more importantly, it's a right hand key combo. In my opinion right hand key combo's slow down computer interaction, as you have to move your hand from mouse to keyboard. And even if it was a left hand one. Nautilus interaction is mostly mouse based (as opposed to for example a text editor), so having to use key combo's is in conflict with that. In user testing, we observed people clicking on this toggle button in an attempt to create new documents simply because the icon had a document in it. My apologies for being frank. But, an OS should be intuitive, yes, but not necessarily idiot proof. The effect that toggle button has, isn't very dramatic, you click it, some UI element changes, you click it again and it changes back. If you click it once to make a new doc, seems possible. But you should be capable of noticing that is has some other functionality. In fact, most UI elements have tooltips these days, there's no crime in looking at them once in while. In the long end, trying to find a better icon might be a good thing. But killing it because someone might mistakenly toggle it, what's that about? Then again, as Vish mentions, it might have some other reason. But if you ask me, there should at least be an option to the button. As long time nautilus users have grown accustomed to it. While it could make sense to recover some screen space on a netbook, when you're on a 26 display, having the button there makes more sense. -- Nautilus location bar toggle icon implies unrelated function https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/382626 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Look I'm not opposed to progress, if I was, why on earth would I mind installing a beta OS. But the concept behind progress is that there is actual improvement. Changing things for no good reason is simply unproductive. Why could you oppose change in this case. Because it forces us to change habits, more specifically in this case automatisms. Automatisms allow us to live life without having to think about trivial tasks. They aren't there when you're born, but are built with experience, which takes time. By forcing people to change automatism (for no good reason) your actually forcing people to waste thinking time on trivial actions. It's like changing the order of the throttle and the break in a car, just because the designer liked it better that way? If the potential fancy new toy in the right corner was actually there, people wouldn't be feeling that the changing effort is for nothing. And by the way, for those who state it's all about options. Yes, options are great, but they are no excuse for poor decisions. By which I'm not stating this one is a poor decision. I do strongly disagree with it though and form me it's back to menu:min, max, close for now. -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 536955] Re: On startup IndicatorApplet FastUserSwitchApplet fail on startup
I suffered from this bug. It would seem that it is some kind of migration error. Following faulty dependencies all the way lead to libparted1.8-12 that needed to be libparted0. Once that was switched most things got fixed. It think it is an important remark though, since it forced the removal of gvfs and all dependent packages all the way up to ubuntu-desktop. [Bug 404970] Re: DVB-T play fail with error
I'm happy to participate in the beta improvement. In my opinion, the way you find the most bugs is by using the beta as primary system. I don't mind the beta hick-ups and I don't mind reporting them. But when I want to sit back and watch some tv, or record a show, I would like it to somewhat work. Having to reboot every time I change the channel is a bit much for me, even with the very quick boot times of Karmic ;) . I don't want to disrespect all the hard work that is put in to the rewrite of Kaffeine and the packaging effort, but maybe the time for the new Kaffeine in the Ubuntu repository hasn't just come yet. For now, for me I solved the problem by downgrading to the jaunty version of Kaffeine, until the new version is fixed. To do this I: * Uninstalled Kaffeine * I fetched the debian-package from http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/kde/kaffeine * Installed it (simple double click does the trick these days) * Locked the version with synaptic, so the update manager ignores it Maybe this is helpful for others in the same situation. -- DVB-T play fail with error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/404970 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kaffeine in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

I'm experiencing the same problem. To specify further, video backed by xine (like kaffeine DVB) don't experience the problem immediately. When gstreamer backed video (Totem) is started, all of it flips (both xine and gestreamer backed playback). Odd thing is, simply starting the nvidia-settings app solves the problem, until a new gstreamer backed video is started. Indeed, when using the hue parameter for XVideo in de nvidia-settings, the effect can be replicated by putting it to + or - 1000. When the nvidia-settings app is allready running, changing the hue and putting it backt to 0 brings everything back to normal.
