[Bug 988889] [NEW] [packaging] hard dependency on mysql backend, breaks other programs
Public bug reported: Kubuntu 12.04 x86_64. Kubuntu PPAs added. Akonadi has a hard dependency on akonadi-backend-mysql despite there being other backends available. By extension, this means that mysql-{server,client}-core-5.1 needs to be installed to get a working plasma workspace. Please see LP bug 923189 for some more information about this decision; https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/akonadi/+bug/923189 There are MySQL drop-in replacements (such as Percona; https://launchpad.net/percona-server - admittedly not in our repos) that conflict/replace the mysql packages. Our akonadi packaging makes KDE mutually exclusive with those, even though the necessary backend functionality may be attained by installing a different akonadi backend. Please see this thread on ubuntuforums.org; http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1960064 I'm not versed in the art of packaging, but two obvious solutions spring to mind. In reverse order of difficulty; 1. Influence the packaging of everything related to mysql (our own MySQL, Percona, equavilents) to provide a 'mysqld' virtual package, and have the implementations provide it in turn. It's a neat solution for sure but requires effort. However, akonadi-server would still depend on mysql (whatever flavor) and eat space. 2. Make akonadi-server depend on a virtual 'akonadi-backend' package and have all the backends provide it. Akonadi can recommend the (best supported default) mysql backend and suggest the others, but still depend on the virtual one so as to always enforce there being a backend installed. Most users won't be affected and will still just use the mysql one, and those with special requirements (eg cannot/must not/don't want to install mysql) get alternatives. To test the second solution, I built akonadi-server locally (source from precise main) after these quick modifications to debian/control. It built nicely and I'm now running with only akonadi-backend-sqlite installed. Please see the attached patch for an example. (Semi-related is that there's still a akonadi-backend-virtuoso virtual package that nothing seems to provide anymore?) Worthy of consideration here is KDE bug 298314 that makes it impossible to actually change to an akonadi backend other than mysql and postgresql (via the akonadi kcm). Those who opt out of akonadi-backend-{my,postgre}sql will be greeted with an Akonadi crash upon login unless they manually edit ~/.config/akonadi/akonadiserverrc and specify the backend to use there. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=298314 ** Affects: akonadi (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: kubuntu -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to akonadi in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/99 Title: [packaging] hard dependency on mysql backend, breaks other programs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/akonadi/+bug/99/+subscriptions -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 868913] [NEW] natty skype:amd64 doesn't upgrade into oneiric skype:i386
Public bug reported: Kubuntu oneiric, packages up to date as of 2011-10-06. I upgraded into oneiric from natty, where I had the 64-bit version of Skype from natty/partner. The older package only depends on ia32-libs for its needed 32-bit libraries, so it wouldn't start due to missing Qt4 libraries that nowadays aren't included in ia32-libs. I figured Skype merely hadn't made it into oneiric, but I had skype:i386 pointed out to me on IRC. Installing oneiric skype:i386 properly removed natty skype:amd64, but upgrading packages didn't do this for me automatically. [Bug 522814] Re: ibus does not install itself as an option for the all_ALL quasi-locale
If ibus works in some programs and not in others, that sounds as if your environmental variables are either wrong or the libraries they refer to are missing. I see there's logic in the ibus file to only set the variables if the actual libraries are installed. Otherwise, $GTK_IM_MODULE and $QT_IM_MODULE (and perhaps $XMODIFIERS) being empty suggests that your im-switch choice is pointing to the wrong file, likely 'default' or 'none'. And setting it aright is what's difficult. So from the top, you first need the ibus-gtk and ibus-qt4 libraries installed. Then you need the proper environmental variables set, as gained by pointing the xinput-lang_LANG alternative for your locale to the /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/ibus file. This bug obstructs that by not making ibus available to the all_ALL locale, which seems to get used even though you use an en_AU locale (and I an en_US). I'm not sure why xinput doesn't simply interpret ours as en_US. Said file must also be properly configured - as it is notably not in Skim bug #403004. 1) I've only recently found out about the kalternatives program, available from lucid universe. With it you can graphically add /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/ibus to the xinput-all_ALL alternative, and then use im-switch to change to it. I'm unsure of whether this will persist through an ibus package update. It will install itself into System Settings - Advanced tab - System section, and obviously if you want to make system-wide changes you'll have to open System Settings with kdesudo. Alternatively from a terminal, 'kdesudo kcmshell4 kalternatives'. 2) You can also add the choice to the xinput-all_ALL alternative from a terminal by using the 'update-alternatives --install' command. When I toiled with it I strugged with its syntax and gave up, so kalternatives might be an easier approach. 3) While an even grittier solution, you can also add the choice manually by adding the entry to the /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/xinput-all_ALL file, where the alternative's choices are listed. Entries consist of two lines; the first pointing to the file in /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/, the second it's numerical priority. I'm positive this gets overwritten at package updates though, at which point you'll have to redo your changes and set your xinput.d choice once more. So you'd need to add the following lines to said file; /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/ibus 99 4) You can also probably overwrite one of the other files in /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/ with the content of the ibus file. They are installed as part of the im-switch package and don't see a lot of updates, so if manual changes keep getting overwritten I guess this is a workaround worth considering. Then you could just set your xinput alternative to 'none' or 'default' or whichever you cloned the ibus file to. I'm currently using UIM, which does set itself up as a choice for xinput-all_ALL. And even in Lucid my machine becomes all_ALL, after having set it up to use a Swedish locale and an English translation in Ubiquity, at time of installation. I'm not sure if that's the real bug, but this would be very easy to fix in ibus by merely removing that commenting hashmark, as detailed in the original entry. Unless, of course, there's rationale behind it being there. -- ibus does not install itself as an option for the all_ALL quasi-locale https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/522814 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 580571] [NEW] Kubuntu plymouth logo text is centered with gears sign factored into total width, placing 'kubuntu' text off-center
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kubuntu-default-settings Kubuntu lucid, kubuntu-default-settings of package version 1:10.04ubuntu23.1 from lucid-updates. Images linked taken randomly from Google Image search hits. The Kubuntu plymouth logo text image factors in the Kubuntu gears at the end of the 'kubuntu' text when determining where the center of the logo is, making the actual name of the distro off-center of the screen. This is in comparison to the Ubuntnu plymouth logo text, which favors the 'ubuntu' text. 1. See http://digitizor.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/plymouth4.png. Note how the first and fifth progress dots are aligned with the first and second 'u' in 'kubuntu', making the text off-center of the screen. 2. Compare with http://www.indigo-bird.de/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/boot.png. Note how the first and fifth progress dots are aligned identically to how they are in the Kubuntu logo, despite the 'kubuntu' text having an extra character. To illustrate it in text, imagine that the pipes in the following examples mark the center of the screen. You may want to copy/paste this into a text editor, or somewhere where you can view them in a fixed- width font. kubu | ntu* . . . . . ubu | ntu* . . . . . I haven't had a look at the source image, so I can't say if the designer reused the Ubuntu theme image and prepended a 'k' to the beginning of the 'ubuntu' text, and then just replaced the Ubuntu logo with the Kubuntu gears - or if the logo placement is hardcoded somewhere in a way that favors the width (and padding) of the Ubuntu theme. It's obviously a design decision, but I'd say the Kubuntu logo should be padded to center the 'kubuntu' text, to mirror the behavior of the Ubuntu logo plymouth theme. The Ubuntu behavior makes much more sense to my eyes. ** Affects: kubuntu-default-settings (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Kubuntu plymouth logo text is centered with gears sign factored into total width, placing 'kubuntu' text off-center https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/580571 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kubuntu-default-settings in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 523558] [NEW] Synaptics cursor speed is not screen-dependent - speed on small screen is too high after connecting big external monitor
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics The cursor speed of a Synaptics pad depends on your screen size. Or rather, the speed value defines the scaling between touchpad coordinates and screen coordinates. (man synaptics, line ~418). So supposedly, even if you raise or lower your resolution, moving your finger n millimetres across the pad surface should still make it move the cursor n centimetres across your screen, regardless of whether the screen's pixel resolution is at 800x600 or at 1600x1200. Connecting an external monitor seems to count as adding screen realestate, affecting the effective screen speed as much as raising your resolution by that of the external monitor would. To put into a concrete example: if your netbook screen is 1024x600, and you connect a 1600x1200 monitor, then the screen realestate becomes 2624x1200 if put side-by-side, or 1600x1800 if put above the other. (Unsure of the details of how the driver calculates this.) The sensitivity that you get on your 1024x600 netbook screen, when the Synaptics driver scales its speed to match your total 2624x1200 realestate, is much too high. How to reproduce: 1) Acquire a netbook with a puny ~10 screen with 1024x600 native resolution (MSI Wind, et al) 2) Get a feel for the touchpad's cursor speed 3) Attach 1600x1200+ external monitor 4) Using xrandr, set the external monitor's output to be next to or above the laptop screen's output, as such; $ xrandr --output VGA1 --above LVDS1 --auto 5) Compare cursor speed to earlier speed 6) Try to perform simple to complex mouse tasks on your small screen and watch the cursor consistently overshoot The speed is acceptable when maneuvering on the external monitor, but very little physical pad movement is needed to totally pan over the entirety of the small netbook screen. Cursor speed should be screen-dependent, if that's even technically possible. Alternatively, it should only take the primary screen (output) into consideration when scaling pad movement speed to screen cursor speed. [Bug 522814] [NEW] ibus does not install itself as an option for the all_ALL quasi-locale
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ibus Upon installation, ibus installs itself as a choice for several locales (xinput-lang_LANG alternatives), including ja_JP and ko_KR. This allows for use of the im-switch tool to change what input method to use for that locale. It does not install itself as an option for the all_ALL quasi-locale, or more specifically, the xinput-all_ALL alternative. This makes it impossible to use im-switch to set my system-wide default to ibus. I run Kubuntu 10.04 with an English language setting and a Swedish locale. This behavior is present in Karmic as well. $ sudo im-switch -c No system wide default defined just for locale en_US . Use all_ALL quasi-locale and set IM. System wide default for all_ALL locale is marked with [+]. There are 7 choices for the alternative xinput-all_ALL (providing /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL). I can also overwrite /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default with the contents of the ibus file in the same directory. Looking at the source, all_ALL is commented out at debian/ibus.postinst:12. Excerpt; case $1 in configure) #ua_inst all_ALL ibus 0 ua_inst ja_JP ibus 60 ua_inst ko_KR ibus 60 [...] Unsure of the rationale of why it would be disabled that way. [Bug 362182] Re: Support for iPhone-like devices in Amarok 2
GNOME apparently does a very nice job of this now. Even in KDE with gvfs packages removed, gtkpod reacts and opens up the iPhone automatically after mounting the device with ifuse. Solid only reacts when the device itself is connected - at which point Amarok correctly deduces that it's not a media device - but stays blissfully unaware when it gets mounted and the media device directory structure becomes available. Either Solid, HAL/udev or Amarok needs to be supplemented with extra fuse-awareness. GNOME's choice was apparently to place their solution in gvfs instead of in HAL, so perhaps KDE should do the same and place theirs in Solid. Or in Amarok. -- Support for iPhone-like devices in Amarok 2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/362182 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This is on an Advent 4211 netbook (rebranded MSI Wind U100), running 2.6.31-14-generic on Kubuntu 9.10 x86. - Background: Whenever the brightness changes, both the hardware/kernel and the software seems to generate a keypress, which in turn triggers a brightness change each and causes them to race. This is tightly related to bug #435352, where the solution so far has been to make changes to the HAL .fdi file for laptop screens to properly signal this by enabling the property laptop_panel.brightness_in_hardware on known affected laptop screens, and then change the the software (here power managers; Powerdevil, gnome-power, xfce4-power-manager, ...) to be aware of the property and to largely back off brightness handling. When the screen tries to DPMS off/standby/shutdown, both xev and dbus- monitor report brightness key events (xev one brightness down key release, dbus-monitor three up/down keypress events), and the screen promptly wakes. If the power manager (here Powerdevil) is set to let the screen sleep after a period of inactivity, this phantom activity will reset the cycle. - KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x361, - root 0xf9, subw 0x0, time 271798228, (55,-14), root:(59,11), - state 0x0, keycode 232 (keysym 0x1008ff03, XF86MonBrightnessDown), same_screen YES, - XLookupString gives 0 bytes: - XFilterEvent returns: False + KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x361, + root 0xf9, subw 0x0, time 271798228, (55,-14), root:(59,11), + state 0x0, keycode 232 (keysym 0x1008ff03, XF86MonBrightnessDown), same_screen YES, + XLookupString gives 0 bytes: + XFilterEvent returns: False Asking Felix Geyer (debfx) whether Powerdevil could be told to ignore the event; - [18:21] debfx there is nothing powerdevil can do to prevent key events - [18:23] debfx hmm well yeah it could probably ignore them - [18:23] debfx i'll have a look at the code - [18:38] debfx doesn't seem that easy, by default powerdevil uses the + [18:21] debfx there is nothing powerdevil can do to prevent key events + [18:23] debfx hmm well yeah it could probably ignore them + [18:23] debfx i'll have a look at the code + [18:38] debfx doesn't seem that easy, by default powerdevil uses the xsync extension to get notified on user activity As it happens, this is a netbook (Advent 4211, a rebranded MSI Wind U100), so thankfully I can close the lid. [Bug 435352] Re: regression: uvcvideo module makes cannot reset port error on usb with bison webcam (5986:0203): USB and suspend fails
I have a MSI Wind U100 rebrand (Advent 4211), and I get this too. Mine has a (0c45:62c0) Microdia Sonix USB 2.0 Camera though. Confirming it's also happening with the new 2.6.31-12 kernel. And +1 to raising importance. If the camera is enabled during boot (and there is no led to signal whether it is), the system is pretty much borked with no inclination as to why. Already connected usb devices seem to work, but it doesn't react when connecting any new ones (no dmesg messages at all). One workaround is to deauthorize the usb hub (by piping 0 to /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb1/authorized) and then authorizing it again after a few seconds. USB devices gets enumerated, and even the camera works. But if you start toggling the camera it breaks down again. It's more of a recovery method if you accidentally booted with the camera enabled. -- regression: uvcvideo module makes cannot reset port error on usb with bison webcam (5986:0203): USB and suspend fails https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/435352 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 376024] Re: alsa-utils missing asoundconf
Asoundconf has been removed in karmic, in anticipation of the new GNOME volume control + pulse being more useful, allowing users to more easily control which sound card is used. This sort of screws over any installation that doesn't use pulse or isn't running GNOME. For instance, KDE has its own way of telling xine which device to use, but apps that use the alsa API directly ignore those. I realize getting ahold of the script from an outside source (or an older package) works around the issue, but even with a new GNOME mixer app, I don't see why this environment-independent terminal script had to go. Please consider Kubuntu and similar flavors that don't run pulse nor GNOME. -- alsa-utils missing asoundconf https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/376024 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 412259] [NEW] Dummy tabs in upper left corner covering terminal text. Five in total, labeled No text
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: yakuake In the upper left corner there is a tab labeled No text, with four more like it hidden behind an expanding handle. This is separate from Yakuake's own tab bar. First I thought this was a rendering error, when it was in fact the label No text in a black font on a black background covering my white/grey terminal text. If I click this tab, it offers to open the location in Dolphin and to close the tab. Picking close the tab, the current tab closes, and Yakuake's tab bar updates to reflect this. If I close the *last* tab this way, a new tab is created (so as to not have a terminal with no tabs open), and the No text dummy tabs disappear until the next session when they return. If you have a black terminal background, it's only visible if you select an empty area (which inverts the selection making the background grey/white). If you have a white background, it's very obvious. This is with Jaunty's Yakuake, package version 2.9.4-0ubuntu1. [Bug 403004] [NEW] Skim doesn't work after installation, XIM_PROGRAM variable unset
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: skim After an installation of the skim package, the xinput.d alternative /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/skim is created, but it is malconfigured. The XIM_PROGRAM variable is unset, which makes programs that rely on SCIM's XIM wrapper functionality not work with the input method. Examples include OpenOffice.org and xterm. This is not a new issue, as I've been using the workaround since at least Gutsy (into Karmic). The top of /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/skim needs to be modified from: XIM=SCIM XIM_PROGRAM= to XIM=SCIM XIM_PROGRAM=/usr/bin/scim XIM_ARGS=-d XIM_PROGRAM_SETS_ITSELF_AS_DAEMON=yes I've even seen reports that the default xinput.d/scim-bridge looks like the following after an 8.10 installation. XIM=SCIM if [ -e /usr/bin/skim ]; then XIM_PROGRAM= else XIM_PROGRAM=/usr/bin/scim-bridge fi XIM_ARGS=-d Which curiously *explicitly* cripples Skim/SCIM if you happen to use xinput.d/scim-bridge alternative and you have Skim installed. Confirming. It's even more of an issue if you connect to your network wirelessly; then the interface will first be up once the desktop has loaded and the user has entered the wallet/keychain password. Assuming the wireless network is even in range. Optimally it should sit in the background like a proper daemon and just get to work when the link goes up. Likewise, go sleep when it goes down. [Bug 119755] Re: scim works in koffice but not in openoffice
I have to manually modify the xinput.d file to get proper support in OpenOffice; out of the box it's incomplete. I'm running Kubuntu 9.04. Basically the environmental variables XIM and XIM_PROGRAM aren't set properly, while GTK_IM_MODULE and QT_IM_MODULE is. The top of /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/skim looks like this immediately after installation: XIM=SCIM XIM_PROGRAM= ...and it needs to look like this for OpenOffice, xterm, and other XIM stuff to work. XIM=SCIM XIM_PROGRAM=/usr/bin/scim XIM_ARGS=-d XIM_PROGRAM_SETS_ITSELF_AS_DAEMON=yes Assuming the locale is set to use /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/skim (via im- switch), restarting X after making these changes makes skim work in everything. -- scim works in koffice but not in openoffice https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/119755 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 365898] [NEW] skim doesn't always minimize to system tray
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: skim Skim seems to have a nasty habit of refusing to minimize to the system notifications tray. Instead, it launches itself in a detached window containing only the icon itself. This is on a 9.04 Jaunty machine, having installed the gold release a few hours ago. If I forcefully shut skim down - via the right-click context menu, killall skim, or xkill - it gets restarted automatically and again ends up in a new, detached window. If I, however, close it with alt+f4, it *disappears* from view yet runs resident. The hotkeys still work, and if I right-click skim's panel that pops up upon activating (via hotkeys) I can access the configuration window, handwriting recognition via Tomoe, etc. The icon is lost though; it's not in the systray, nor in its own window anymore. Forcefully shutting it down again via those other methods makes it spawn a new window. And yes, the System Tray Icon plugin (in skim's configuration) *is* activated. If I log out and login, or switch to a tty and restart X, or zap (after having disabled DontZap in xorg.conf), it's still detached when I've logged back in. It fixed itself when I rebooted a few hours ago, and then returned now and won't go away, so chances are it'll fix itself again if I do a proper power cycle. Which seems odd. I'm not sure how to reproduce this; I've certainly had it since Gutsy and KDE3, though I always thought it was because of Compiz, since I experienced similar behavior with Adept's Update Notification icon. (It detached itself but obediently docked with the tray if I closed it and restarted it.) I've yet to find a surefire workaround. It's something that just happens by itself and then just fixes itself after a while, as if it has to do with skim launching itself too early, before plasma has had time to draw the tray notification applet, and then after some days/weeks/months of use the system is somehow bogged down (after I installed garbage), slowing its (skim's) startup down and eliminating the issue. Alas, conjecture. skim is set to use scim-panel-kde, config module: kconfig, and to start skim automatically when KDE starts. $ sudo im-switch -l ... [Bug 365898] Re: skim doesn't always minimize to system tray
Okay, I managed to reproduce and workaround the phenomenon, though still on the same system. To reproduce, (I simply need to) log out and log back in. Alternatively, when logged in, zap (ctrl+alt+backspace, if enabled), or change to a tty and do 'sudo service kdm restart'. Once logged back in, it'll detach to its own window. To work around, *log out*, then when logged out restart KDE with 'sudo service kdm restart'. Alternatively, reboot. Key is to properly log out first before working on getting back into X. Once logged back in, it'll dock to the tray. One other small thing I noticed is that even with kdm stopped, scim- launcher stays resident. -- skim doesn't always minimize to system tray https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/365898 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 355552] [NEW] Quassel very I/O intensive, fsync()ing to disk after each log entry
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: quassel Quassel writes to the hard drive *very* often, seemingly after each log entry. I have a netbook with an Intel Mobile 945GME Express video chipset, on which I run Kubuntu Intrepid. It's newish, like most netbooks, so I don't have data on its video performance in Feisty. I'm running package version 2:2.4.1-1ubuntu10.1 of xserver-xorg-video- intel, INTEL_BATCH set to 1, and glxinfo reports direct rendering: Yes. With xorg and intel packages from xorg-edgers ppas, I get max 80. Is this user error, or has there been a considerable regression? Perhaps related to GEM being merged into the kernel? Reconfirming, happens for me in Ubuntu 8.10, Kubuntu 8.10, Mint 8.10 and Xubuntu 8.10. It also occurs when I use (Ctrl+)Alt+Fx to switch to tty. Switching *between* ttys works fine, but switching to and from tty - from and to X - reverts brightness to 100% which seems to be my default. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pidgin Netbooks, such as the ever-popular eeePC series, Aspire Ones, MSI Winds etc, all suffer from being limited to lower resolutions. On such machines, some dialog windows are actually too tall (i.e. have a too large height factor) to actually *fit* the screen. Pidgin's Preferences window is one such. On my Advent 4211 (rebranded MSI Wind) I can reach a max resolution of 1024x600. Take those 600px and subtract some more for panels, and there's not a whole lot left. The window can not be resized, so I have to tab and guess; hope I hit something that will save my changes instead of undoing them. Alt-dragging the window upwards works *if* you're not running Desktop Effects. The standard Normal setting you end up with in live cd environments as well as after having installed makes the window title stay within the bounds of the desktop area. Changing /proc/acpi/video/*/LCD/brightness to anything other than the minimum value (20 for me) makes it work again. [Bug 254468] [NEW] [KDE4] momentary video garbage upon drawing new objects
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kubuntu-kde4-desktop I'm running KDE 4.1 from the ppa listed at kubuntu.org, but I've had this issue ever since the first 4.0 betas. This is on a Hardy machine. Whenever a new object is drawn, such as the application menu or any application whatsoever, the space in which it will be drawn is first allocated with video garbage. After a brief delay - perhaps 200ms - the garbage is properly replaced with the real object contents. It looks as if it's displaying old video memory, if that makes sense. It is hard/impossible to get a proper screenshot depicting this. Restoring a minimized Firefox is a surefire way of reproducing it; every other time it will be video garbage, every other time it will just be a black box. And again, application menu, right-click menus, titlebar menus; *anything* KDE4 draws. After having once spawned the object, the next time it will draw garbagelessly, with some exceptions (such as Firefox, for some reason). I've tried and gotten this on two machines running Intel integrated graphics (with the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver), and one with the proprietary Nvidia driver; both exhibit the same behavior. I've had some other people confirming it at the Ubuntu forums, too. Please see: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=788023highlight=drawn+timep=5009121 and the following few replies. [Bug 240673] [NEW] [KDE] systemsettings cannot be navigated with only keys - *needs* pointing device
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kde-systemsettings On a system with no mouse or other pointing device, one can't open systemsettings and navigate to Keyboard Mouse - Mouse to enable Mouse Navigation (to move pointer with numpad). systemsettings' icons seem to be buttons; as such, focus can't simply be put on the area containing them to allow keyboard input to choose between them. Upon clicked, they aren't selected, but rather opened. [Bug 232499] [NEW] [KDE] openoffice.org-kde breaks scim/skim in OpenOffice.org
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org Installing the openoffice.org-kde package instead of the openoffice.org- gnome package makes OpenOffice completely ignore scim. The keybinds don't work, nor is the correct language keypresses sent to OO.o if manually selected via the systray icon. This is under Kubuntu 8.04 (KDE 3.5.9-0ubuntu7.2), running skim. I have set the default input method to skim and it works in *any and all other programs*, except OpenOffice. A workaround is to replace the openoffice.org-kde package with the -gnome one instead, though both the GTK_IM_MODULE and the QT_IM_MODULE environment variables are both set to scim-bridge. With it, it correctly reacts to keybinds, and everything works. However, this also makes OO.o's appearance borderline unacceptable, with font corruption, missing borders on menus, weird coloring, etc. It likely works without issues under Ubuntu and Gnome (which obviously prefers the -gnome package). Confirming on my Intel Core2Duo (so two cores, lewl). The issue occurs with or without libflashsupport, so I find it hard to believe it's related to pulse. Furthermore, it works in firefox-2 with the same wrapped file, so I'm betting there's something new in FF3 which the plugin doesn't handle well. [Bug 185470] Re: iwl3945 not functioning : microcode error
I had a driver build at some point (may have been a backport, may have been from the ubuntu -17 kernel), in which I got the Microcode errors *and* I could see networks, which seems like what you're getting? Problem was that the system was unresponsive while it scanned, every two seconds for ten seconds. But as described four posts up, creating that /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945 file fixed it all. -- iwl3945 not functioning : microcode error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/185470 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 226134] Re: iwl3945: Microcode SW error detected, scanning networks slows system down to near halt, interface doesn't work without extra file at /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945
linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-16-generic also introduces this behaviour on 2.6.24-16 kernels. Further, removing disable_hw_scan from /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945 still makes the interface stops working with this module build. *However* when in its broken state it does not produce these messages (but then it doesn't work either). So the only way of getting it to work, at present, is to stick with the 2.6.24-16 module. Upgrading in any way, to the -17 kernel or to the backported module package, breaks it. -- iwl3945: Microcode SW error detected, scanning networks slows system down to near halt, interface doesn't work without extra file at /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/226134 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 185470] Re: iwl3945 not functioning : microcode error
I posted a bug earlier which, I see now, seems to be more or less a duplicate of this one. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-backports- modules-2.6.24/+bug/226134 tl;dr version: - Interface does not work at all in any to-date Hardy kernels without creating /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945 with a line with disable_hw_scan=0 - Grabbing linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-16-generic makes it spam Microcode SW errors in dmesg. - Upgrading to 2.6.24-17 makes it spam Microcode SW errors in dmesg. - The interface *does* work with the modules provided with the 2.6.24-16 kernel and the file described above, but upgrading in any way breaks it. This includes the backported -17 kernel as well as all the backported module packages currently available to both -16 and -17.
