The certbot cronjob will short-circuit itself if systemd is running on
the host, so that the systemd timer takes precedence.

[Bug 1960615] Re: pgloader autopkgtests fail for lack of OpenSSL 3.0 support

2022-03-31 Thread Christoph Berg
It turned out that cl-plus-ssl upstream git has already OpenSSL 3
support, so all it took was to update it to 20220328.git8b91648. I've
just uploaded that to Debian unstable.

[Bug 1953260] [NEW] simple-scan fails to connect to scanner while ippusbxd or ipp-usb are running

2021-12-05 Thread Thomas van der Berg
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded from 18.04, where this wasn't a problem. On 20.04,
whenever I try to scan a document with simple-scan while ippusbxd or
ipp-usb are running (I tried with both) it will fail to connect to the
printer and show the following message in a popup: "Failed to scan:
Unable to connect to scanner".

I'm not sure what causes this, but whenever I kill ippusbxd (sudo
killall -9 ippusbxd) scanning works again. That breaks printing for me
though, so now I have to do this awkward dance of killing and restarting
ippusbxd to scan or print. I've found quite a bit of people having
comparable problems with printers on Ubuntu 20.04 (see
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1233521/printer-problems-after-
installing-ubuntu-20-04 and
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1258462/ubuntu-20-04-simple-scan-does-
not-detect-scanner ) but this is the only workardoung for scanning that
worked for me.

Some people online recommended replacing ippusbxd with ipp-usb from
https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/pzz/xUbuntu_20.04/amd64/
but ipp-usb caused the same problem for me.

My printer is a HP DeskJet 2630

[Bug 1948471] [NEW] Kernel panic - kernel NULL pointer dereference; RIP is at blk_mq_put_rq_ref+0xa/0x60

2021-10-22 Thread Maarten van den Berg
Public bug reported:

We have recently seen seemingly random kernel panics on one of our
instances in Google Compute Engine, running the `linux-gcp-5.11` kernel
on Ubuntu 20.04.

The crashes happened weeks apart and seem to occur randomly, we have not
found a way to consistently trigger the crashes.

We've captured the crash logs of the two crashes we've seen so far:

[Bug 1939898] Re: Unnatended postgresql-12 upgrade caused MAAS internal error

2021-08-16 Thread Christoph Berg
Fwiw the use-case of not restarting after installing a minor upgrade is
not supported by PostgreSQL upstream. The proper fix is to restart, or
to hold off the upgrade until the time when restarting is possible.

[Bug 1928311] Re: Timer renewal doesn't use --preconfigured-renewal

2021-05-13 Thread Harlan Lieberman-Berg
Unless you all need it sooner, my plan is to add this to the cli.ini
file with the first upload post-freeze. You should be able to sync it
over from then. Erica confirmed that the flag has no functionality
prior to the v1.16 release, and v1.12 is what's in the freeze.

Let me know if you need it sooner, and I can do an upload to exp for you
to sync from.

Re: [Bug 1875471] Re: python3-certbot-nginx is incompatible with its dependencies

2020-05-05 Thread Harlan Lieberman-Berg
If you want to do a more extensive test, I just added end-to-end nginx
certbot testing in Debian sid. You should be able to pull it out of
the source package and run it by hand just by invoking the script from
the extracted source tarball, as long as you have pebble and the nginx
plugin installed.

2020-03-10 Thread Berg Lloyd-Haig
I noticed a new release by @~ricotz, thanks for addressing this so
quickly!

- Fixed driver installation failure on Linux kernel 5.6 release
candidates, where the NVIDIA kernel module failed to build with
error "implicit declaration of function 'ioremap_nocache'".

I'm still getting a DKMS build failure, log is attached for reference.

[Bug 1866074] [NEW] 440.59-0ubuntu0.19.10.2 DKMS Build Fail on Kernel 5.6-rc4

2020-03-04 Thread Berg Lloyd-Haig
Public bug reported:

I'm running an AMD Ryzen 3000 processor and I'm looking forward to the
k10temp module updates in 5.6 to expose more metrics from the CPU to the
system for monitoring. (vCore, temperature per CCD, etc).

At the moment, the only thing keeping me from using this RC is the build
fail for nvidia DKMS. I can guess that as a release candidate my mileage
would vary. I just noticed in the build changes that some features
should support 5.5+, so I thought I would try it out.

Attached is the DKMS build log error for reference.

2020-02-17 Thread Berg Lloyd-Haig
I had a bad experience trying to reverse out of this problem with
2.30-0ubuntu2.1 installed under proposed. Fortunately I treaded lightly
and linked it to the proposed update line and was able to downgrade to
2.30-0ubuntu2. Had to reinstall a bunch of stuff, including the nvidia
driver, but all was well in the end. I only have myself to blame, pretty
sure apt said these packages were being held back, and with good reason.

[Bug 1857271] Re: Focal 440.44-0ubuntu1 PRIME Sync not working

2020-01-15 Thread Berg Lloyd-Haig
@vanvugt I manually changed the PPA target to focal in the apt sources
list file:

cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/graphics-drivers-ubuntu-ppa-disco.list
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/graphics-drivers/ppa/ubuntu focal main

I was doing this because I'm running the latest mainline Ubuntu kernels
as they have a bunch of driver fixes for my other devices. I also update
the linux-firmware package to a similar level to match the current
development distribution (i.e. focal). The focal packages are targeted
at these kernel versions, so I try to keep the kernel, graphics drivers
and linux-firmware packages in sync on my system for the expected
performance.

My guess is the nvidia drivers will get backported once they're tested
as working on the newer kernels for the latest/dev distributions.

I'm not an expert on this, just what I have come to understand, although
it may be entirely correct.

I've noticed screen tearing with the nvidia 440 driver on 5.4.x kernels.
Typically, this is resolved by setting the xrandr option 'PRIME
Synchronization' to '1', however, doing so with the above combination
results in never being enabled.

$ xrandr --output eDP-1-1 --set 'PRIME Synchronization' '1'
$ xrandr --verbose | grep PRIME
PRIME Synchronization: 0
PRIME Synchronization: 1
PRIME Synchronization: 1
PRIME Synchronization: 1

Reverting to Linux 5.0.0-37-generic resolve the issue, so I figured I'd
raise it here first, however, it seems like a potential kernel
regression issue if the only thing I'm changing is indeed the kernel
version. Your input would be appreciated. I tried to figure out how to
post a bug on the PPA, however, it seems bug creation is disabled on
that PPA, so I ended up here.

I've been testing newer kernel versions to get fixes for other problems
with my hardware. Due to another package dependency, I'm stuck on disco
for some pulseaudio bluetooth codec support, so I've been pushing
forward the kernel, firmware and nvidia driver versions to get the other
driver fixes. I realise this is not ideal.

There appears to be an error installing any 5.4 kernel with this driver
installed. It is working fine with any 5.3 kernel. I am trying to move
to kernel 5.4 as it resolves a regression with a bluetooth device I'm
trying to fix, hence the discovery.

The error during kernel installation is:

[Bug 1835188] Re: firewalld attempts to use parameter that requires a newer iptables version

2019-07-03 Thread Gert van den Berg
That code path fails to detect that neither --wait or -w is supported, since
iptables-restore returns a successful return code on invalid parameters and
firewalld uses the return code to detect whether it works:
# echo "#foo" | /sbin/iptables-restore --wadit=2; echo $?
/sbin/iptables-restore: unrecognized option '--wadit=2'
0

The current version of firewalld fixed that, by looking for the error
message as well:

[Bug 1835188] [NEW] firewalld attempts to use parameter that requires a newer iptables version

2019-07-03 Thread Gert van den Berg
Public bug reported:

firewalld from Ubuntu 18.04 LTS sometimes attempts to use the `--wait`
option to iptables-restore, which is only valid on iptables 1.8.x and
newer and not on 1.6.1, as bundled with bionic. (At least according to
the man page, the comments in the firewalld code implies that it was
supported on an older version, but that might be with Fedora patches)

This seems to originate from
firewalld-0.4.4.6/src/firewall/core/ipXtables.py, line 337.

If this runs firewalld fails to create the rules when starting,
resulting in wither no rules loaded, or the policies loaded, without any
rules, which blocks SSH. It is not clear when this gets triggered, with
several servers deployed with the same Ansible script, some have this
issue, some work fine.

The unit file was overwriten as per this to get it to start in the first
place: https://github.com/firewalld/firewalld/issues/414

The warning that accompanies the failed rule loading is:
```
WARNING: '/sbin/iptables-restore --wait=2 -n' failed: /sbin/iptables-restore:
unrecognized option '--wait=2'#012iptables-restore: line 93 failed
```

iptables version:
1.6.1-2ubuntu2

firewalld version:
0.4.4.6-1

2019-07-03 Thread Gert van den Berg
Mostly when firewalld fails with that error, a restart will fix it (It
seems to only hit that code path sometimes), however if it is a headless
box, that restart might be tricky.

[Bug 1831241] Re: Plank crashes on XUbuntu 19.04 (Xfce) when trying to drag and drop an icon

2019-06-03 Thread Bastiaan van den Berg
** Description changed:

  1) XUbuntu: 19.04
  2) plank: 0.11.4-4
  3) Expected to be able to move icons with drag and drop.
  4) Plank crashes as soon as you start to drag an icon in order to move it.
When running plank from the command line, the following error is shown when it
crashes:

  (plank:5762): Gdk-ERROR **: 14:23:36.184: The program 'plank' received an X
Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.

When I run plank as root (from the command line), drag and drop icons
  works like a charm.

+ EDIT: Dragging icons also works without issues if plank is auto-started

2019-05-31 Thread Bastiaan van den Berg
Public bug reported:

1) XUbuntu: 19.04
2) plank: 0.11.4-4
3) Expected to be able to move icons with drag and drop.
4) Plank crashes as soon as you start to drag an icon in order to move it. When
running plank from the command line, the following error is shown when it
crashes:

(plank:5762): Gdk-ERROR **: 14:23:36.184: The program 'plank' received an X
Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 4938 error_code 2 request_code 26 (core protocol) minor_code
0)

When I run plank as root (from the command line), drag and drop icons
works like a charm.

** Affects: plank (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1810636] Re: Suspect QCA6174 btcoex | Ubuntu 18 Bluetooth Audio Skip/Stutter/Delay WiFi bandwidth conflict Dell XPS 9570 [Pending PulseAudio testing]

2019-01-19 Thread Berg Lloyd-Haig
I'm happy this is pretty much solve. With the pulseaudio-modules-bt from
comment 27 [2], I've experienced far less audio lag overall. Every now
and again I get a small glitch that delays it 10ms or so, but it's so
much better now I'm happy to close this and mark it as non-issue.

[Bug 1810636] Re: Suspect QCA6174 btcoex | Ubuntu 18 Bluetooth Audio Skip/Stutter/Delay WiFi bandwidth conflict Dell XPS 9570 [Pending PulseAudio testing]

2019-01-07 Thread Berg Lloyd-Haig
It might be worth saying, however, without the pulseaudio-modules-bt in
[2] in comment #27, the throughput of the WLAN was not affected when
playing sound via the A2DP sync and I was seeing abotu 18 MB/s. Maybe
I'm a bit premature in saying it's solely a pulseaudio-modules-bt issue.
Regardless, it seems to be working a lot better with LDAC.

[Bug 1810636] Re: QCA6174 doesn't utilise btcoex - Ubuntu 18 Bluetooth Audio Skip/Stutter/Delay WiFi bandwidth conflict Dell XPS 9570

2019-01-07 Thread Berg Lloyd-Haig
Ok, I'm pretty sure this is a pulseaudio issue now and I'm going to
close.

I reverted back to linux-firmware 1.176, and I had also used undervolt
[1] to help reduce thermal load on the Core i9 Dell XPS 15 which has
suffered from thermal shutdown under high load. I disabled undervolt
service from running and ensured everything was back to normal values -
the stuttering improved, but was still present.

I then focused on the difference between my Mi8 and my Ubuntu 18.10
installation. The Mi8 is running a LinesageOS ROM that supports
LDAC/Apt-X codecs. I noticed with the regular AD2P codec in Ubuntu that
I was getting some noise included in the Bluetooth audio encoding, and
it sounded much cleaner via the Mi8 connection. I then found pulseaudio-
modules-bt repo on github [2] that includes [3] a Ubuntu 18.04|18.10
repo that enabled LDAC/Apt-X codecs, LDAC is supported by the Sony
bluetooth speaker.

After installing and rebooting the machine, I confirmed that the codec
was correctly initialised in the a2dp sync:

berg@bxps:~$ pactl list sinks | grep -e bluez -e a2dp_codec
Name: bluez_sink.E0_37_BF_09_F9_8B.a2dp_sink
Driver: module-bluez5-device.c
Monitor Source: bluez_sink.E0_37_BF_09_F9_8B.a2dp_sink.monitor
bluetooth.a2dp_codec = "LDAC"
device.api = "bluez"
bluez.path = "/org/bluez/hci0/dev_E0_37_BF_09_F9_8B"
bluez.class = "0x240414"
bluez.alias = "bshg"

The sound is now perfect, and copying files across the network results
in no stuttering. I think this proves that the btcoex support is working
correctly and there is no issue specifically with the Qualcomm firmware.
I notice if I pair the bluetooth speaker and play back audio my network
throughput is limited to about 14-15 MB/s, when I turn of the speaker it
improves to 17-18 MB/s. So the module is correctly allowing bluetooth to
operate with priority.

Resuming the undervolt [1] service, I notice no stuttering as well with
the updated pulseaudio and pulseaudio-module-bt packages in [2].

I'm going to continue testing for a few days before closing this bug,
but I'm pretty sure I've gotten to the bottom of this one. Thanks
@kaihenfeng.

2019-01-07 Thread Berg Lloyd-Haig
Here is a demo of the stuttering sound, you can hear it at around 11
seconds after I start a file copy over SMB.

pulseaudio 1:12.2-0ubuntu4

Firmware seems less stable than that in linux-firmware 1.176. Getting
strange delays with the WiFi in general.

One thing I noticed was that it was better, but not perfect on my 2.4
GHz SSID/radio. During this time my throughput from my server is only
about 2 MB/s. When I switch to 5 GHz SSID/radio, the throuhgput
increases to around 20 MB/s.

[Bug 1810636] Re: QCA6174 doesn't utilise btcoex - Ubuntu 18 Bluetooth Audio Skip/Stutter/Delay WiFi bandwidth conflict Dell XPS 9570

2019-01-07 Thread Berg Lloyd-Haig
Ok, I managed to get the latest firmware working. It still exhibits the
same issue. I think I must of only rebooted last time instead of
shutting down completely.

I've tried the speaker sitting on top of the track-pad, about 50 cm away
from the laptop - all to the same effect - the it's like it misses an
audio packet, and rather than dropping the packet, it re-transmits
again, buffering all subsequent packets for the stream. I would rather
lose the packets completely in this case.

The speaker is a Sony SRS-HG1. I can pair the speaker to my Xiaomi Mi8
phone and it negotiates LDAC codec for the Bluetooth audio sink. I can
then run high load on the Mi8 WiFi and play a movie in FullHD over DLNA
and it never skips a beat, there is a small delay as you'd expect with
Bluetooth, but it's less than 100 ms and seems normal after a short
while.

I experienced this problem also in another location when I was house
sitting recently - so different environment/access points etc. I think
demonstrating the problem with the speaker and my phone without any
problems puts me back on the firmware/driver troubleshooting path.

Do you have any other ideas @kaihengfeng? Would you like me to do
Bluetooth packet capture?

[Bug 1810636] Re: QCA6174 doesn't utilise btcoex - Ubuntu 18 Bluetooth Audio Skip/Stutter/Delay WiFi bandwidth conflict Dell XPS 9570

2019-01-06 Thread Berg Lloyd-Haig
@kaihengfeng I did try the latest version of the QCA6174 4.4.1 firmware
which matches the firmware in linux-firmware v176, and the result is the
same. I replaced firmware-6 file in the
/lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0 folder to test this.

[1] https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-
firmware/blob/master/QCA6174/hw3.0/4.4.1/firmware-6.bin_WLAN.RM.4.4.1-00128-QCARMSWPZ-1

** Description changed:

  I'm running Linux 4.20.0-042000-generic #201812232030 x64 on a Dell XPS 9570
with QCA6174 chipset, and have had the problem with Bluetooth audio choppiness
ever since I have owned this laptop. This problem has persisted for me with
previous kernels. If I disable wifi and use media on machine
  locally, the problem doesn't occur.

Note: I've reverted back v4.18.0-13-generic and reproduced the problem for
  the apport-collect report.

It started with Ubuntu 18.04 and continues with 18.10. It's particularly
noticeable when the when saturating the WLAN connection with throughput,
i.e. copying a large file sequentially across from a samba share, but
also streaming video online results in the audio progressively delaying
over-time. Re-establishing the Bluetooth audio sync restores the sync,
  but slowly creeps out again.

I've upgraded my linux-firmware package to disco 176 to match v4.20
  kernel drivers ref: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
  firmware/1.176

The ath10k_core driver that supports this device has a reference for
  btcoex: ref

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath10k/core.c?h=v4.20#n2598

It's possible that the Bluetooth component firmware is not supporting or
communicating btcoex compatibility, but this is starting to reach the
edge of my ability to diagnose the problem.

This btcoex support in ath9k has resolved/improved the Bluetooth
- bandwidth problem as shown in
+ bandwidth problem for older Qualcomm chipsets as shown in
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1746164

As a troubleshooting step, I've also tried the very latest firmware-6 file
from, but I'm continuing to experience the problem ref:
https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-firmware/tree/master/QCA6174/hw3.0/4.4.1

** Description changed:

  I'm running Linux 4.20.0-042000-generic #201812232030 x64 on a Dell XPS
9570 with QCA6174 chipset, and have had the problem with Bluetooth audio
choppiness ever since I have owned this laptop. This problem has
persisted for me with previous kernels.

- It started with Ubuntu 18.04 and continues with 18.10. I'm running .
- It's particularly noticeable when the when saturating the WLAN
- connection with throughput, i.e. copying a large file sequentially
- across from a samba share, but also streaming video online results in
- the audio progressively delaying over-time. Re-establishing the
- Bluetooth audio sync restores the sync, but slowly creeps out again.
+ Note: I've reverted back v4.18.0-13-generic and reproduced the problem for
+ the apport-collect report.

I had the same issue when upgrading from 16.04.5 to 18.04.1 LTS on a

I used the fix that yaroslav used and it works also in my case:
ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libGL.so.1

I got this problem as well. When the screen lock starts (due to time-out

blinking cursor on a black screen.

I'm using XFCE with Lightdm.

[Bug 1786575] [NEW] Dell XPS 15 9570 - Thermal Shutdown Event & Annoying Full-Speed Fan Spin Up

2018-08-10 Thread Berg Lloyd-Haig
Public bug reported:

Main Problems:

- Incorrect performance throttling results in Thermal Shutdown Event (~100C on
CPU) as reported in BIOS log
- System fan during system idle powers at full speed for 1 second every minute
or so (could also be GPU fan)

Environment:

Dell BIOS: 1.3.0 (Also present in 1.2.0, 1.1.3)
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-8950HK CPU @ 2.90GHz
Operating Systems: Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Thermald Version: 1.7
Ubuntu Thermald Package: 1.7.0-5ubuntu1
Kernel: 4.17.14-041714-generic (Also present with 4.15.0-29, 4.15.0-30,
4.17.11-041711)
Intel Microcode: 3.20180425.1~ubuntu0.18.04.2
Nvidia Driver: 396.51-0ubuntu0~gpu18.04.1
TLP Package: 1.1-2ubuntu1

I've documented this issue on the thermald Github page with thermald
debug logs and configuration:
https://github.com/intel/thermal_daemon/issues/161

Basically, I've attempted to set the temperature for B0D4 to as low as
85000 and while the debug log seems to indicate the trip has be made,
the CPU scailing isn't working to keep the CPU from thermal shutdown.
Disabling Turbo Boost prevents shutdown of the system.

I'd expect thermald to performance throttle the CPU correctly to prevent
it from a thermal overheat event.

** Affects: thermald (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

changed as a result. Currently the close bug (due to being migrated)

[Bug 1720126] Re: [ip link] Message truncated error for large number of passthrough VFs

2017-10-16 Thread Monique van den Berg
This is a debdiff for iproute2 applicable to 3.12.0-2. I built this in pbuilder
and it builds successfully, and I installed it, the patch works as intended.

** Patch added: "iproute2_3.12.0-2ubuntu1.debdiff"

[Bug 1720126] Re: [ip link] Message truncated error for large number of passthrough VFs

2017-10-12 Thread Monique van den Berg
** Description changed:

- I've ran into an issue when creating a large number of virtual functions
- on a SR-IOV capable device.
+ [Impact]

- ip link show reports a message truncated error:
+ When querying a Physical Function netdev with a large amount of VF's
+ (more than 30), the resulting return message can overflow the 16K
+ netlink message buffer.
+
+ This can be fixed by enabling message peeking on the socket and resizing
+ the buffer on receive, or by simply enlarging the receive buffer.
+
+ Since there's an upper limit to the number of VF's per PF, it's
+ relatively sane to just enlarge the receive buffer. Please see the
+ attached patch.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ # Set up 60 VF's on an SR-IOV device
  ip link show > /dev/null
  Message truncated
  Message truncated
  Message truncated

- A likely cause might be that when called in a system where the number of
- PCIe Virtual Functions are more than 30 for a given Physical Function,
- the netlink response is larger than 16K, meaning that a message is
- truncated.
+ [Regression Potential]

- The issue is seen with Ubuntu14.04 and Ubuntu16.04.
+ 1) Applications relying on the broken behaviour will need to be updated, but
it would be a really dubious use case.
+ 2) Increasing the rx buffer size increases the memory footprint (but
realistically, this is tiny).
+ 3) Extra processing time is now needed to parse the larger buffer, in the
case that a call to "ip link" is on the critical time path of an application,
(called multiple times in a tight loop, for example), it would affect load.

- A possible solution for the issue is to increase the size of the receive
- buffer in libnetlink.c
+ All of the above are mitigated because this workaround is in upstream
+ iproute2 and has been running on different distributions without
+ repercussions.

Dear Philip,

I have corrected as you suggest. No problems any longer.
Thanks for prompt help. My first negative experience with ppa.

Best regards
Theo van den Berg
