[Bug 1817924] Re: apps launched from gnome shell do not get input focus

2019-03-12 Thread bwat47
I can also confirm, as rachel saw:

- This also happens with all gnome extensions disabled. I tested with the
'vanilla' gnome session.
- This does not happen under wayland
- Certain apps (e.g. Gedit), aren't effected.

Further to that, I also found that this only seems to happen in the
first workspace. If I open some application in the first workspace,
switch to a second workspace, and open gnome-terminal there, it does get
focus.

I entered an upstream bug report: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
shell/issues/1043

I can re-create this 100% of the time launching gnome terminal in ubuntu
19.04 (with all updates installed as of this comment).

hit super key

search for 'terminal'

hit enter

gnome terminal opens, but un-focused.

This does not happen in ubuntu 18.10

[Bug 1791307] Re: [snap] GTK theme doesn't match the host system

2019-02-16 Thread bwat47
The chromium snap is core18 now, and if anything the theming is even
worse now. It seems to only partially respect the system theme, and has
bugs like white text on white background, instead of properly respecting
yaru's theming. I attached a screenshot

[Bug 1779661] [NEW] Option to change Application Switcher color/opacity is broken

2018-07-02 Thread bwat47
Public bug reported:

Steps to Re-create:

# Open compizconfig-settings-manager
# Enable Application switcher plugin
# In the plugin settings go to the general tab
# In the Background section check 'Set background color'
# and below that specify the desired background color and opacity

Expected: Should change background color and opacity of the application switcher

Actual: There's absolutely no change, even after restarting compiz

IMO this is a big issue, because the defaults for the application switcher are
horrible - it has a highly transparent background by default making window
titles hard to read, and because this setting is broken it's impossible to
change it

This also happens with the equivalent setting in the Static Application
switcher plugin as well

IMO in addition to fixing this, the default should really be changed
well to have a more opaque background for the switchers... this is an
accessibility issue. Take a look at the attached screenshot, this looks
horrible and the titles are hard to read

[Bug 1654448] Re: XPS 13 9360, Realtek ALC3246, Headphone audio hiss

2017-02-26 Thread bwat47
This bug is pretty obnoxious...

So far the only way I've found to get the alsamixer settings to persist
without pulseaudio repeatedly undoing it is editing the pulseaudio
config files per the arch wiki here:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dell_XPS_13_(9350)

Hissing/Crackling noises when using headphones section

Unfortunately this disabled the internal mic completely though and the
changes will get reset when pulseaudio is updated.

[Bug 1231947] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon input hotplug-command not working in 13.10

2013-09-27 Thread bwat47
Public bug reported:

I have always used this method in ubuntu to enable 3-finger tap on my
synaptics touchpad (and by the way, 3-finger tap works out of the box in
every non-ubuntu distro /rant):

create a file called touchpad_settings.sh.
chmod +x touchpad_settings.sh
gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.peripherals.input-devices
hotplug-command /home/brandon/touchpad_settings.sh

This way 3 finger tap is working and gnome always respects the setting
and doesn't reset it on suspend/resume. This worked perfectly in 12.04,
12.10, and 13.04. In 13.10 it just does not work. I double checked, made
sure I had the right path to the file, and that the file was executable.
If I manually execute touchpad_settings.sh it works, but when I boot my
computer it just does not seem to run the hotplug command, and if I
manually run the script and then suspend/resume, gnome disables the 3
finger tap upon resume, again not respecting the hotplug-command.

This is a big issue, this is the only way to get 3 finger tap working on
a touchpad in ubuntu.

I reported it against the wrong package and was having trouble editing

looks like the bug is assigned:

the problem isn't with unity, its with invalid syntax in the libreoffice

[Bug 1231799] [NEW] Libreoffice quicklist doesn't work says label empty

2013-09-26 Thread bwat47
Public bug reported:

Unity quick list for libreoffice apps in ubuntu 13.10 beta 2 just says
label empty this is because in the .desktop files it incorrectly says
Unityquicklist= New Document instead of Name=New Document. If I edit
the .desktop files to say Name=New Document the unity quick list works
fine.

[Bug 1211511] Re: Text not visible in Software Updater dialog (update-manager GUI) when updated software is available.

Same problem here, seeing this problem on two xubuntu 13.04 laptops. One
of which is a fresh install. On the fresh installed laptop the issue
appeared after running all updates so it appears to be some kind of
regression caused by a post-release update.

[Bug 1159449] Re: in Nautilus, accelerators in menus are just barely visible

2013-08-05 Thread bwat47
Will there be an update released for raring? I tested the saucy package
in raring and it works totally fine and fixes this issue (and I didn't
notice any regressions).

This is a very obvious user-facing visual issue that never should have
been in a final release in the first place. Would be nice if the fix was
released for raring.

[Bug 969489] Re: lightdm tries (and fails) to start too early?

2013-07-16 Thread bwat47
respawn workaround works fine here, but frankly I find it troubling that
such a severe issue has gone unfixed for so long... Will we ever get an
official update that fixes this? New users shouldn't be expected to edit
config files just to get their system to boot correctly. This type of
bug should never even make it out of a beta release, and definitely
shouldn't go unfixed in multiple stable releases.

[Bug 1173966] Re: Nautilus bookmarks for smb shares disappear

2013-05-22 Thread bwat47
With the same version of nautilus (3.6.3) and gvfs (1.16) in arch linux
I do not see the disappearing share issue at all. I also do not see it
on a raring live usb, but when I clean install raring and update the bug
re-appears. I am convinced that this is not an upstream bug, and that
its causes by some sort of ubuntu patch or backport to these backages
that was introduced in a post release update.

@Mirto

I think the bug effects you the same way it did me, In my case this
problem happened at random. sometimes it would boot problem free,
other times it would boot with pulseaudio dummy output and it would
totally hang on reboot/shutdown/halt, and other times I would simply get
a kernel panic during boot. With the kernel from here:
http://people.canonical.com/~apw/lp1169984-raring/ I have seen none of
these issues.

[Bug 1173966] Re: Nautilus bookmarks for smb shares disappear

2013-05-01 Thread bwat47
I've been seeing this too, incredibly annoying. And I've seen it on a
totally clean install of 13.04. I've seen multiple ways to reproduce it:

1. Click bookmark to mount share
2. Unmount it
3. Close the nautilus window and re-open it, the bookmark is gone.

the other way it happens is whenever I plug in my nexus 7, as soon as
the nexus mounts the bookmarks disappear.

[Bug 1173966] Re: Nautilus bookmarks for smb shares disappear

2013-05-01 Thread bwat47
@ seb128, I'm not sure it is

1. This was on a clean install, so I'd assume the new bookarks I created would
be saved in the proper location?
2. The bookmark works. It shows up in the sidebar. The problem is after
mounting/unmounting the share and then closing the nautilus window the bookmark
disappears. It re-appears after killing nautilus and restarting it
3. I didn't have this problem with nautilus 3.6.3 in other distros I've used
(fedora, arch, opensuse)

[Bug 1169984] Re: 3.8.0-18 HDMI audio regression: Either oops or opening device fails with -ENODEV

2013-04-30 Thread bwat47
The alsa DKMS solution did fix the occasional kernel panic and dummy
output issues for me, but it also made the headphone jack on my lemur
ultra totally stop working but the kernel in Andy's comment (and the
mainline kernel) both work perfectly for me.

[Bug 755841]

2013-04-29 Thread bwat47
Since I saw fbcompose mentioned above as a lightweight standalone
compositor that can produce tear-free output working around this issue,
I'd like to mention I've found another similar compositor that seems to
be under more active development:

Compton: https://github.com/chjj/compton

Its a nice lightweight compositor that doesn't need to replace your
window manager or anything, so it can easily be used to work around this
issue and get tear-free output. In my testing its been very stable too.

Using it with: compton --backend glx --paint-on-overlay --glx-no-stencil
--vsync opengl-swc successfully completely removes tearing for me on
both my intel machines (including in fullscreen video and with multiple
displays), and performs better than using the TearFree xorg option :)

[Bug 1170280] Re: kernel 3.8.0-19 crashes 1 of 5 boots approx

2013-04-25 Thread bwat47
I've been having similar problems, not sure if my problem is this exact
one. But my machine does have r8169, and it does seem that like op every
1-5 boots or so I get a kernel panic. Mainline kernel works fine, only
the latest raring kernel gives me the issue.

I've also had another issue with this kernel where at random pulseaudio
doesn't load and gives me a dummy output, also whenever this issue
occurs if I try and reboot it hangs indefinitely. Again, fine with
mainline kernel. All these problems seem to have appeared on 3.8.0-18
and/or 3.8.0-19

[Bug 1170483] Re: The file manager (nautilus) handling the Desktop is not being enabled in live session

2013-04-24 Thread bwat47
This is something that should really be addressed before release. With
the desktop icons disabled it triggers some huge compiz/unity bugs as
described above (compiz seems to be designed to expect nautilus to be
drawing a desktop window).

Simply minimizing a window in the live session totally freezes compiz,
and the dash doesn't respons to the keyboard at all. as soon as I do:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons true in
the live session, everything behaves properly. This would be a terrible,
terrible thing to leave in a final release. This issue should
reproducable for anyone, i've seen it on every machine I've tried the
raring live session on. I can still reproduce it with today's iso.

[Bug 1170483] Re: The file manager (nautilus) handling the Desktop is not being enabled in live session

2013-04-21 Thread bwat47
The problem is when nautilus is not handling the desktop compiz totally
freaks out and behaves poorly. Things like minimizing windows totally
freezes until I hit the alt key which then unfreezes the animation.
Unity/Compiz just acts buggy/bizarre in the live session. However if I
open dconf-editor in the live session and check the box to have nautilus
handle the desktop all of the problems go away and compiz/unity acts as
expected. Compiz seems to expect this option to be enabled and barely
works without it.

This is why it should be enabled for the live session. I have very
common hardware (intel graphics) and saw these issues on some pretty
recent daily ISO's. (think the last I tried was april 17th or 18th?).
This should be easy to reproduce, boot into a live session with this
option disabled and try to do some common window management like
minimizing windows. These kinds of glitches in a live session will leave
a bad impression.

Can also reproduce these issues on today's ISO:

Booted live usb
Choose Try Ubuntu

Issues I saw:
Dash will not respond to meta key
Compiz freezes whenever you minimize a window
And general bizarre compiz unity behaviour.

As soon as the box is checked in dconf-editor to allow nautilus drawing
the desktop all issues go away.

[Bug 1171181] [NEW] Random Pulseaudio Dummy Output

2013-04-21 Thread bwat47
Public bug reported:

I cannot manually reproduce this and it seems pretty rare/random, but
I've noticed in 13.04 at random when I boot up pulseaudio isn't working
at all. It just shows a dummy output. rebooting has fixed it each time
it happened. I also noticed each time I saw this happen there was an
accompanying hang on reboot, it would just sit at the plymouth splash
and I'd have to use the power button. My theory is that sometimes
pulseaudio fails to start correctly causing the dummy output issue, and
when I reboot it also fails to exit causing the hang.

I've seen this on both of my laptops, one running ubuntu 13.04 fully
updated one running xubuntu 13.04 fully updated. Laptop one has:

brandon@ubuntu-U52F:~$ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | grep Codec

Found what causes this. It only seems to happen if I have pidgin open

can't handle signing into facebook while pidgin is connected to it, I've

[Bug 1170670] [NEW] Sometimes shows status as offline when empathy is Available

[Bug 1170832] [NEW] Facebook Requires Authorization when already authorized

2013-04-19 Thread bwat47
Public bug reported:

I am running fully updated 13.04 64-bit. I simply cannot get empathy/UOA
to connect to facebook. When I add the account in UOA everything seems
to go well, facebook login page loads, it logs in successfully, facebook
recognizes the session as safari on linux; but upon completing the
setup in UOA empathy refuses to connect to it and keeps telling me it
requires authorization.

I've Tried the following: Removing the account from UOA
Ending all active sessions on facebook and deleting the ubuntu app
rebooting
adding account in UOA, and allowing the ubuntu app to manage my messages etc...

Didn't help at all. pidgin connects fine on the same computer.

Sometimes it does let me add it and it works for a while, but eventually
this issue happens again and leaves me totally unable to successfully
add a facebook account for quite some time, until it randomly decides it
wants to work again. Empathy/UOA in 13.04 has been unreliable to the
point of ridiculousness, the application is basically unusable and can't
handle the one basic task of an instant messaging program, which is
connecting to my accounts reliably.

  I am running fully updated 13.04 64-bit. I simply cannot get empathy/UOA
to connect to facebook. When I add the account in UOA everything seems
- to go well, facebook login age loads, it logs in successfully, facebook
+ to go well, facebook login page loads, it logs in successfully, facebook
recognizes the session as safari on linux; but upon completing the
setup in UOA empathy refuses to connect to it and keeps telling me it
  requires authorization.

I've Tried the following: Removing the account from UOA
Ending all active sessions on facebook and deleting the ubuntu app
  rebooting
adding account in UOA, and allowing the ubuntu app to manage my messages
etc...

Didn't help at all. pidgin connects fine on the same computer.

[Bug 1170508] [NEW] Alt-Tab should not be transparent in Low GFX Mode

2013-04-18 Thread bwat47
Public bug reported:

In Unity's low gfx mode, the dash transparency and blur is [correctly]
disabled. However the alt tab switcher *only* has the blur disabled but
is still transparent. This makes for severe readability and usability
issues because the text becomes very unreadable when there is busy
stuff under the alt tab switcher. In Low GFX mode the alt tab switcher
should be opaque like the dash.

[Bug 1159411] Re: gnome-control-center crashed with SIGSEGV in empathy_account_widget_apply_and_log_in()

2013-04-12 Thread bwat47
actually I'm not sure I can reproduce this anymore after installing from
the latest raring ISO. my aim account appears to be working fine as are
facebook and google. I will need to test for a few days to confirm,
because last time I thought this was fixed it came back after a day, but
I'm crossing my fingers.

2013-04-12 Thread bwat47
Nevermind :(, still does it. bug seemed to have been triggered after the
first time I suspended the freshly installed raring to ram. after resume
the aim account refused to reconnect, and trying to add an aim/jabber
account in UOA is messed up again, it just sits there and doesnt bring
up the spot to enter my credentials, and then gnome-control-center
crashes with the SIGSEGV message in this bug report.

[Bug 1168582] [NEW] Google talk Requires Authorization after suspend/resume

2013-04-12 Thread bwat47
Public bug reported:

Fresh install of raring with all updates. Sometimes, after
suspend/resuming my laptop, the google talk account refuses to
reconnect, and emparthy says it requires authorization, if I click the
button next to requires authorzation it just brings me to UOA and

[Bug 1159411] Re: gnome-control-center crashed with SIGSEGV in empathy_account_widget_apply_and_log_in()

2013-04-11 Thread bwat47
@Jakub, same problem here, can't add am AIM account at all, waiting does
not work. It just sits there indefinitely and the part to enter the
username/password never appears. Seems to happen with all the non
browser based plugins. And in the rare event it does appear and let me
add the account, upon a reboot the account stops working again, and when
you try to remove/re-add it it doesn't appear again.

even further as he mentioned in comment 6, and now none of the plugins
work. empathy/uoa has been an unusable buggy mess for a long time in

Can we expect it to make it into kde 4.11 then? I'm currently using the

[Bug 1141079] Re: Compiz broken with QT menus/floating controls in 13.04

2013-03-03 Thread bwat47
** Description changed:

When using QT apps such as VLC player in ubuntu 13.04 menus and floating
controls are all messed up. Whenever I bring up a right click menu in a
QT app compiz thinks the menu is another window and it shows up as
untitled window I saw this in xubuntu 13.04 + compiz as window manager
and in a fresh 13.04 unity install.

In addition if you go fullscreen in vlc or smplayer and bring up the
floating controls it glitches out and stops letting you bring them up,
you also occasionally see flashes of the unity launcher/menu bar when
you bring them up. This is a very big regression, and QT video players
  are basically unusable...

+ I also get random invisible menus in QT applications

When using QT apps such as VLC player in ubuntu 13.04 menus and floating
controls are all messed up. Whenever I bring up a right click menu in a
QT app compiz thinks the menu is another window and it shows up as
untitled window I saw this in xubuntu 13.04 + compiz as window manager

In addition if you go fullscreen in vlc or smplayer and bring up the

you bring them up. This is a very big regression, and QT video players
  are basically unusable...

I also get random invisible menus in QT applications

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTOAHeOwdkofeature=youtu.be

I wasn't able to catch the fullscreen controls bug on video for some
reason, that one only seemed to happen when I was in unity.
+
+ I initially thought this was something wrong with my install or
+ something to do with XFCE, so I tried downloading a fresh ubuntu/unity

[Bug 1140505] [NEW] Wallpaper bleeds through on top right when app is maximized

2013-03-02 Thread bwat47
Public bug reported:

When I have certain applications maximized (i've seen this happen in
firefox and rhythmbox so far) there are rendering glitches along the top
right side. The wallpaper bleeds through, and sometimes there's a white
line too. Only started happening recently. I tried turning off SNA in
case it was related to SNA being turned on recently, but does it with
UXA too, so seems to be a unity/compiz issue. My video card is intel
HD4000, running raring 13.04 fresh installed today with all updates.
Screenshot is attatched, you can see the blue wallpaper bleeding through
on the top right of rhythmbox.

The glitch goes away if you un-maximize and re-maximize the app.

Step to reproduce: Maximize an application like firefox or rhythmbox, so
it will remember that its maximized and open maximized next time you
launch it. Close the application. Open it back up, and you will see the
glitch on the top right. It only seems to happen if you launch the app
maximized, if you open the app un-maximized, and then maximize it its
fine.

I'm using compiz with XFCE in fully updated 13.04 64-bit. In QT apps
such as smplayer or vlc, at random a menu or menu's will become
invisible, when I click on the menu nothing shows under it, but if I
blindly click I can activate menu items. I have to restart the
application whenever this happens. I have the workarounds plugin enabled
already, and tried enabling qt window fix to see if that helped but it
did not.

+ Quickest way to reproduce: Open the menu item on the far left or ride
+ side. then quickly move the mouse horizontally between the other menus
+ at the top, eventually one or more of the menus goes invisible until the
+ application is restarted.

[Bug 1109251] Re: pidgin hangs on startup

2013-02-28 Thread bwat47
I recently installed xubuntu raring and pidgin works totally fine there,
so definitely something to do with gnome/unity.

[Bug 1109251] Re: pidgin hangs on startup

2013-02-28 Thread bwat47
Do you think the empathy issue I linked earlier could be related? The
symtoms sound similar, at first the empathy accounts work fine, and then
after a while they totally refuse to work, and trying to set one up in
UOA its just totally blank under enter account details. Maybe they
could be hitting the same gsettings bug?

[Bug 1109251] Re: pidgin hangs on startup

2013-02-27 Thread bwat47
@zarquon, agreed, and even worse empathy is constantly unreliable when
it comes to connecting to accounts, it loves to randomly disconnect or
refuse to connect at all, and its gotten even more unreliably since the
introduction of UOA's buggy single-sign-on. And in raring empathy/UOA is
also broken as all hell right now leaving no good IM solution for
raring: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/1116449

I might have to end up skipping 13.04 entirely if it gets released with
these bugs unfixed.

[Bug 755841]

2013-02-26 Thread bwat47
running ubuntu 13.04/kde 4.10 on my laptop (kernel 3.8/ ddx 2.21,
ivybridge). kwin still tears at the top of the screen even with sna
enabled and vsync on in kwin, but I assume thats just this bug:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=307965

So I tried disabling vsync in kwin and using the tearfree option which
did remove all tearing, and seems to perform reasonably well for desktop
usage and video playback (haven't tried anything else)

[Bug 1069498] Re: KWin shows tearing despite of VSync

2013-02-24 Thread bwat47
this bug is ridiculous. I can't believe its still not fixed in 4.10. So
now we have to wait another 6 months to have usable compositing? this is
a severe bug sicne it causes tearing in common use cases like fullscreen
video. could this fix be backported to kubuntu?

[Bug 1098207] Re: pidgin hangs

2013-02-17 Thread bwat47
same problem here. it works fine when I first boot the system. but I can
always reproduce the hang this way:

Boot ubuntu, open pidgin, see that it works fine. Log out to lightdm.
Log back in. Try to open pidgin, and see it just hangs.

I can reproduce this happening this way:

When I first boot ubuntu 13.04 and open pidgin its fine. If I log out,
log back in, and open pidgin it always hangs immediately. Also tried
clearing my pidgin config and such, no help.
