[Bug 1745999] Re: Okular snap package cannot access files outside home directory
Numpty user scratches around in the dirt looking for some incy little nut that pinged off when he tried to attach some widget. Choking and spluttering in all the dust kicked up down there, it's hard to see. There are all these big cowboy boots kicking around. Its a gabble of developers talking amongst themselves: "the nut... yeah the nut... and the bolt as well ... yeah ... and the thread ... yeah, the nut and the bolt and the thread ... no but, don't forget the oil though ... yeah, don't forget the lube ... yeah the nut and the bolt and the thread and the lube ... got that? ... yeah, 'course I've got that - what do you think I'm some sort of numpty or something? ... na-ah, i was just saying ... ". They communicate by writing messages to one another on little bits of paper. Every now and again, one gets dropped and it floats down into the cloud of dust and boots, down there where the numpty user is scratching for answers. What's this, he says: "lube, bolts, guages ... eh?". He bumps into some other numpty down there. "What the? ... its nuts innit? ... lube, you mean? ... no, nuts and threads ... what about bolts? ... come again? ... bolts ... never heard of them - don't you mean threads? ... dont ask me - don't you know anyone who knows anything about lube though? ... what's lube got to do with it? ... it says here on this scrap of paper I found in the dirt: 'lube' ... i really think you should be more concerned with nuts ... what nuts?". -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1745999 Title: Okular snap package cannot access files outside home directory To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/kdegraphics/+bug/1745999/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1821364] [NEW] xfce4 install on Ubuntu 18.04 has no polkit agent
Public bug reported: The problem was evident as en error message when trying run 'Language Support' (gnome-language-selector) after install. (This was the advised way to get the Atom spell-checker working). Error described here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1031319/language- support-in-18-04-not-working-org-freedesktop-policykiterror- failed/1127862#1127862 It occurred on a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04 after installing xfce4. No PolicyKit Authentication Agent was installed - or at least not one that xfce seemed to recognise. I solved the problem by installing one: $ sudo apt install policykit-1-gnome That installed the package: /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome- authentication-agent-1. It seemed to update the autostart list. Though there is such a thing as 'xfce-polkit' and 'xfce-polkit-git', I could not see them on my machine and Debian [reports][3], in it's account of the package policykit-1-gnome, that xfce still uses the gnome polkit agent: "This implementation was originally designed for GNOME 2, but most GNOME-based desktop environments, including GNOME 3, GNOME Flashback, and MATE, have their own built-in PolicyKit agents and no longer use this one. The remaining users of this implementation are Cinnamon, XFCE and Unity." (https://packages.debian.org/sid/policykit-1-gnome) It is worth noting that the terminal emulator that comes default in Ubuntu and is still default after installing xfce (gnome terminal) would not run polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 after install. I understand it may have been necessary, perhaps ironically, to run it an an xterm. I didn't attempt this. I tried installing a gui for it once and learned that most applications I use don't report to it. It had scant information that was of use to me and the gui was pretty impotent. So there wasn't much I could do with it. Meantime, Zeitgeist seems to be causing problems and my system resources are very tight. I would rather just switch it off. But there is no obvious place for a user to do either of two very important things with this application: i) find out what it does; and ii) find out how to control it. [Bug 1514600] [NEW] gnome-mplayer stutters on restarting video with space-bar following fwd/rew arrow keypress
Public bug reported: 1. Start video : plays fine. 2. Spacebar to video : works fine 4. Spacebar to video : works fine If however: 5. ">" to video : goes okay 6. Spacebar to video : works fine 7. Spacebar to video : video stutters I created an error log (attached) in which I started a video and then: 1. paused and restarted it with the spacebar three times 2. fowarded 3. paused and restarted it with the spacebar three times Some obvious problems: # it seems to be looking for options in the directory where the video its playing is located # it can't find an input.conf file in the user's home directory # it keeps "trying to enable screensaver" (20 times in this brief test) # it keeps "trying to disable screensaver" (14 times in this brief test) # it keeps looking for a video called "filename" in the user directory where it was launched This is a severe problem for work that requires rapid navigation of video using keyboard shortcuts. The thing that makes mplayer the greatest media player are its keyboard shortcuts and the faultless control it gives over playback position and speed. [Bug 798414] Re: update-initramfs should produce a more helpful error when there isn't enough free space
No, Bill Canaday (bill13510). No, no, no. And no. The linux way is everyone does their bit to make the software better. Users, who are not developers or system administrators, report when things don't work properly. This is a time-consuming and often seemingly thankless, fruitless and pointless process. But they persist because they share with developers the hope that the system might become good enough one day for all users, and not just those who are prepared to put up with the unending extra hours is takes to put up with, work around, and fix all the problems inherent in this perpetually unfinished, half- finished, half-baked software. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/798414 Title: update-initramfs should produce a more helpful error when there isn't enough free space To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/initramfs-tools/+bug/798414/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1319829] Re: aa-genprof will crash when select scan on Ubuntu 14.04 server
Bravo. This is an issue for new users, btw, because the rather well written Introduction to Apparmor by Bodhi.Zazen on Ubuntu Forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1008906) uses Genprof at the crucial point where its tutorial teaches you how to build a profile. And it makes a special point of doing this for Firefox, which is arguably the main reason why any desktop user would seek to configure Apparmor when they learned of its existence. So Bodhi.Zazen's tutorial goes kaput just at the point where you are beginning to feel you are making real progress toward securing your machine. (It's seven year's old anyway, yet prominent in the search engines and a big draw because it's a reasonably good tutorial - a rare thing). If users understood that Apparmor's out-of-the-box profiles should give reasonable-enough protection (they should, shouldn't they? they do, don't they?), they might get a night's sleep. Or perhaps after a user learns from Bodhi.Zazen that they need to install Apparmor's package of pre-baked profiles separately (this is necessary, isn't it?), it might dawn on them that this really is protection enough to give them a night's sleep (it is, isn't it?). But the case is not clear. And the Firefox profile is disabled by default. So that brings you back to Bodhi.Zazen's kaput tutorial and the Apparmor bug. [Bug 1319829] Re: aa-genprof will crash when select scan on Ubuntu 14.04 server
So, yah. I'm getting this error. But I'm on 14.04 LTS. It's still running the malfunctioning Apparmor 2.8.95~2430. It seems then that fix 2.8.96~2541 was never issued. Apparmor seems impotent. It seems as though it is impossible to configure, impossible to use Apparmor to secure a machine running Ubuntu 14.04. Ubuntu 14.04 LTS must therefore be inherently insecure. Otherwise Apparmor wouldn't be necessary in the first place. Ubuntu Trusty can't be trusted. Ha ha. The Ubuntu download page says: Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS comes with five years of security and maintenance updates, guaranteed. Is that, like, sales twaddle? Do you remember the days when the Linux crowd used to jeer endlessly at Microsoft security flaws: Meh, Microsoft is like sooo rubbish and Linux is sooo superior blah blah twaddle. So this is now a year since Trusty was released, and eight months since the Apparmor bugfix was released. And users are still wasting time trying to get Apparmor to work, wasting time reporting the bug. How much time do linux users waste reporting bugs that have already been fixed but haven't been implemented? You can wave goodbye to a day going through the process of trying to learn how to use some arcane linux package, discover it doesn't work, report the bug, and it all be an utter waste of time because nobody is listening. You can wave goodbye to hours just getting to grip with and reporting a bug. It happens all the time. Linux users must be [insert censored word here] because they have nothing else to do with their free time but wrestle with malfunctioning software and report bugs. They have no lives. What's worse their efforts are utterly futile. They are [insert censored word here]. If the Apparmor fix isn't being added to Ubuntu 14.04, then why not disable Apparmor in the release so people don't waste time trying to get it to work? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1319829 Title: aa-genprof will crash when select scan on Ubuntu 14.04 server To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/apparmor/+bug/1319829/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1463125] [NEW] ubuntu 14.04 stuck (apparently) during install
Public bug reported: Ubuntu 14.04 Install appears to have hung. Install is unable to proceed beyond the user options screen. There is no dialogue button for next or any other way for the user to tell the install to continue. This install was started from live desktop icon. The install then appeared to proceed without a hitch. I went through install screens as install was being processed. I left the machine a while when it asked for install options for username / password. The install continued in the background. User login details were finally added. But the screen did not allow progress from this point. The install process completed - and there was no more disk activity. But that was all. The screen has not hung: it is possible to edit the user details. But the only dialogue options are Back and Connect. The Connect button is greyed out and will not accept selection. There is no way to progress from this point. The install parameters were as follows: forcepae, encrypted lvm, no network connection, over-write blank space Machine: IBM Thinkpad X40 Pentium-M The machine booted into live environment after I added the forcepae option for certain Pentium-M Thinkpads (as per instructions here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/117744/how-can-i-install-on-a-non-pae- cpu-error-kernel-requires-features-not-present/117751#117751). [Bug 579876] Re: encrypted home directory isn't mounted if password changed by another user
Credible help pages say you should avoid changing a password as root (e.g. http://bodhizazen.net/Tutorials/Ecryptfs#Password). That is all very well if you know it. But you are not likely to know it if your system doesn't tell you. And users are encouraged to change passwords on the command line instead of the GUI if they use encryption. This error is really, inevitable. i) Users would increasingly feel it advisable to use the Ubuntu installer's option of encryption when installing. ii) They would also increasingly feel it sensible at some point to change their encryption password. iii) There is no obvious place in the GUI to change the encryption password (not in Xubuntu at least). Ubuntu forums, when you search for how to change the encryption password, give command line instructions. iv) Changing encryption password requires root privileges v) Users would likely change their user password while changing their encryption password vi) They would likely attempt to make this change as root, since recent instructions have demonstrated it is required and it is anyway intuitive that you would need root privileges to do something as sensitive as change a user password. Ergo, the problem is inevitable. And it is negligent of linux password system not to warn users when they are about to change their user password as root. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/579876 Title: encrypted home directory isn't mounted if password changed by another user To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ecryptfs-utils/+bug/579876/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 579876] Re: encrypted home directory isn't mounted if password changed by another user
This is definitely a bug. And nothing's been done about it after four years. Not even - as discussed here - some simple messages to inform users that they are about to break their system and lose their data. This really is atrocious. Users are most likely to encounter this problem because: i) Ubuntu offers disk encryption / home encryption as standard option during install ii) Users would instinctively log in as root to change a user password - It's a security matter, isn't it? Then surely you must log in as root? iii) There is nothing to tell the user that their system is about to break when they attempt to change their user password as root. I'm still trying to resolve this problem after a day and a night. I'm losing hair, losing money, losing my will to live. Because this sort of thing happens all the time. I've managed to unlock the lost directory using Dustin's recovery tool. But that just puts the data in a temp directory. That raises more questions. How are you supposed to turn that temp directory into a working home folder again? How do I get back to work? The recovery tool is incomplete. [Bug 1371964] Re: Permission denied while writing tags from filename
Dear Quentin If it's to do with permissions, then it could be a more fundamental problem with the way linux software handles music files. The file permissions for my music are set by whatever linux programs create them. They are usually created by soundjuicer or soundconverter. Some permissions are set as supplied from download sites. [Bug 1292425] Re: apport does not specify what personal data it collects and reports
More on Apport bug. Just reporting another bug now, Apport gave me the option of including logs. It said if you include logs they might contain personal data such as username and something-or-other. This is brilliant. A most welcome and reassuring sign of progress. The procedure could be improved by automatically stripping out personal data and replacing it with standard names. E.g. username = user_x system = system_x all user-created directories given a unique name = e.g. dira, dir z1, dir az1, and so on. Maybe there are other personal data that could be stripped out automatically too? Perhaps enough that it might be possible for Apport to reassure the user that all personal data has been stripped out? [Bug 1220429] Re: gmusicbrowser lost saved lists
Dear Quentin Subsequent to these reports distribution upgrades and/or bug infestations forcing reinstallation led me to lose my gmb application data. I'm looking frantically through backups but am facing the possibility that it is lost. Quodlibet stopped working altogether on Xubuntu 14.04. It seems to have installed Audacious. I will get gmb again and address these points you raised, if they are still relevant: a) Will look. b) This is the way to solve the problem, thank you. I did learn to do this (the hard way!). 3. I've no doubt you do. If only my own backups had been as reliable as gmb's. I've got two more places to look. Fingers crossed. Regarding adding labels, it seemed to me at one point the best solution was to add additional information as tags. Quodlibet seemed to handle this fairly well at one point. tags e.g. for key or pianist. But it simplified its interface and I lost the feature. I could also no be sure that my bespoke tags would ever be compatible with any other s/w. It seemed not. I shall let you know if I have anything useful to say about labels. [Bug 1276739] Re: partman-crypto uses xts by default, yet xts.ko kernel module is not present in 3.2 (original-point-zero stack) crypto-modules-udeb
This bug appears to be a problem with Xubuntu AMD64 12.04.4 Alternate. I have been prevented using this disk to rescue an encrypted LVM system because, it says, reload ioctl failed...failed to setup dm-crypt key mapping for device... check that kernel supports aes-xts-plain64 cipher. The system was setup using default Xubuntu installer options for encrypted LVM (can't remember which version but it was recent and it worked). The rescue has become necessary because kernel -29 update failed due to /root partition becoming full. Kernel update failure consisted of a disk full error before the kernel extras image could be installed. USB Keyboard therefore fails when system asks for encryption password. The problem would be resolved for common users if the system detected its problem and provided a 'Dummy's' option to resize the partition, with an intelligent guess proffered as the new size. Rescue of this situation is like venturing into a foggy swamp. Before you even get to attempt the resize operation, the Xubuntu rescue disk is not loaded with the same cipher that it had originally used to setup the encrypted volume. The DebianLive AMD64 7.5.0 Rescue CD failed as well. It seems to be incapable of recognizing a non-US keyboard, which makes entering an encryption password setup on an English keyboard quite unlikely (unless its a Mickey Mouse password that uses only standard numbers and letters). It is very unlikely a common user will detect this fact from using the live CD. The experience of attempting this operation will therefore be deeply frustrating and ultimately unsuccessful. The solution now appears to be to keep downloading rescue disks until one works. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1276739 Title: partman-crypto uses xts by default, yet xts.ko kernel module is not present in 3.2 (original-point-zero stack) crypto-modules-udeb To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debian-installer/+bug/1276739/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1333386] [NEW] Package system broken, update failed, keyboard failed on boot, root partition full
Public bug reported: Repeated failure of xubuntu/ubuntu updates repeatedly causes my system to crash severely. I recently had to reinstall my operating system after a failed update. I may now have to do it again. The cause is this perennial problem of the root partition getting full up within weeks of a fresh install. The o/s is not able to administer its partitions properly. This is a severely obstructive problem. Most recently: 15 June 2014 - routine updates to Xubutnu 14.04 (Ubuntu 'Trusty' LTS). The update crashed with the following message: The package system is broken. If you are using 3rd party repositories then disable them since they are a common source of problems. Now run the following command in a terminal: sudo apt-get install -f I had standard repository options enabled for Canonical Partners and independent providers. I unticked these and ran the command. It said: The following packages have unmet dependencies: linux-signed-image3.13.0-29-generic Depends: linux-image-3.13.0-29-generic (=3.13.0-29.53) but 3.13.0-29.53 is installed Depends: linux-image-extra-3.13.0-29-generic (=3.13.0-29.53) but is not installed linux-signed-image-generic Depends: linux-firmware The operation rendered my computer unusable. On restarting my machine, my keyboard didn't work at the encryption password prompt. I tried some obvious ways to get round this but without success. (E.g. I tried booting from the most recent CD I had to hand (Ubuntu 12.10). Booted okay but it did not recognize any of my encryption passwords so I could not get at my data). The keyboard worked during Bios startup. I could use it to operate my boot menus. It just froze when the o/s loaded. It is most important as a user that I stress this point: I *eventually* found out that I could opt to load a different kernel and thus gained access to my computer. I booted using the 3.13.0-24-generic option instead of the 3.13.0-29-generic option my o/s wanted to load as default. But this did not solve the o/s problem. I tried looking in Synaptic (a tool I must confess does not get used because I am not an administrator, I am a user and Synatpic is out of my comfort zone). Synaptic said: You have two broken packages on your system. Use Broken filter to locate them. I did this. Synaptic showed my two broken packages: linux-signed-image-3.13.0-29.generic installed version: 3.13.0-29.53 linux-signed-image-generic installed version: 3.13.0-29.35 Thinking it was time to file a bug report (and contemplating whether switching back to Windows was the lesser horror or whether I should just accept that I must reinstall linux every few weeks), I ran the Software Center - I remembered that the Software Center had an option that displayed update history and I reckoned this might be useful info for a bug report. Software Updater said on starting: New software cannot be installed because there's a problem with the software currently installed. It gave two options: cancel repair It is interesting to note here that the only point when the system offered to repair the broken update was not when it happened, nor after restart when its failures became apparent, but after a prolonged, distressful attempt to rescue lost data and a chance invocation of the Software Center. This presupposes that your system isn't broken. Because if it was then you wouldn't be able to run the Software Center, unless you happened to know that you can rescue a system by loading an old kernel image. Assuming you had not in your amateur struggles with linux's prohibitively thorny bugs not deleted all your old kernel images, your only chance of knowing this as a mere user is after years of hair-wrenching trial and error: because there is nothing inherently instructive, guiding or instinctual about linux that would lead a user to this knowledge. I clicked repair. The repair failed. Software Center said: The new software couldn't be installed because there is a problem with the software currently installed.. Do you want to repair the problem now? It gave two options: cancel repair Its error output read as follows: installArchives() failed: (Reading database ... [Bug 285080] Re: incorrect error: there is not enough room on the disk to save
This effects me on a fresh install of Xubuntu 14.04 LTS. Installed about two weeks ago. I am suddenly unable to download files. I have been blocked downloading a .pdf and a .zip. Firefox gives me this error message: There is not enough room on the disc to save /tmp/filename Remove unnecessary files from the disc and try again, or try saving in a different location. Thunar tells me my temp folder has 3.1kb space free. It has two folders in it of 1kb a-piece. My home directory - where I was attempting to download - has 124Gb free. This manifested this afternoon, for example, when I copied one large zip file on my local disk over a smaller one of the same name on an external disk (both encrypted separately). After the copy was complete the size was given as a smaller size. It suggested to me the copy had been unsuccessful. But while I was looking at this Thunar crashed. I restarted it and the file was showing the correct, larger size. Ah but look again at the df output above. /tmp has just 34Mb space. So the Thunar error was wrong. It is not that my home directory doesn't have enough space, it is that my tmp doesn't have enough space. So Elias' orginal report was correct to say the error report was wrong. It is also true that the real problem is that /tmp is getting full and the o/s can't handle it. It looks like the two are related. The o/s doesn't even know what the problem is to report it properly. It suggests Xubuntu/Ubuntu guided install procedure for separate partitions is failing to provide paretitions of the correct sizes (this problem has persisted for years). It suggests also that Xubuntu/Ubuntu are unable to work with the partition sizes they opt to give themselves. (One other event happened in the course of these reports that may or may not have significance for any attempt at diagnosis. That is that I installed KSystemLog using the Ubuntu Software Centre. (This incidentally failed to install an icon on the system menu - this leaves me with no surprise but much despair, but that has become par for the course for this bug-ridden operating system. How about ceasing the annual distributions until the base is solid and stable - and then proceed at a slower pace: users are suffering and spending too much time wrestling with bugs. [Bug 1292425] Re: apport does not specify what personal data it collects and reports
And would someone please help with this? : I want to report an xfce4-session bug. But I cannot. I have 27 gedit document tabs open in 7 workspaces, 5 Firefox windows with 65 tabs, 5 thunar windows/tabs, 4 terminal windows, 4 search windows, 2 x Recoll, 9 x Okular. (Excuse me if I missed anything - I'm quite busy). I need to report a bug but I am not prepared to send one single document name, directory name, tab name, url, or window content There is no button I can press that says: strictly forbid *any* personal data being sent with this report. It might help if a three tier option where given: 1. total privacy; 2. best compromise; 3. Permissive (best report). Give info to the user on this. We are in the dark. Please don't say it's on some website somewhere or its been gone over before in some obscure forum, even this forum. I'm a user. I use the session manager, or try to use it, and I'm ignorant of this important matter because my system neglects to give it any consideration. So what do I do? The bug I wanted to report relates to the session described above. Session manager won't let me save the session. And I can't shutdown either. It says: Failed to run action 'Shut Down'. Session manager must be in an idle state when requesting a shutdown. The user has just one possible answer to this statement: WTF? Trying to save a session gets a similar response (from both parties): Unable to save session: session manager must be in an idle state when requesting a checkpoint'. The session manager and shutdown function neglect to tell me what this means, or what I need to do to correct the problem. I have been through every window, to see if there is a prompt waiting for my response (this has been the problem when this error has occurred in the past). But I can find nothing. So what's the problem? My system knows. But it won't tell me. So what am I supposed to do? My only option is to manually close all my open windows (about 35 in all, across 10 workspaces) and then shutdown. That rather defeats the object of having a session manager in the first place. I would have reported this bug without running 'ubuntu-bug xfce4-session' but the relevant page in Launchpad (https://launchpad.net/xfce4-session) has its bug reporting option greyed out. So what do I do? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1292425 Title: apport does not specify what personal data it collects and reports To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/+bug/1292425/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1292425] Re: apport does not specify what personal data it collects and reports
More info on the xfce4-session bug. (Would someone be kind enough to file it, since I have been unable to do so myself?) I closed down each group of windows, methodically attempting to save session/shutdown each time. The error recurred every time. Even after closing all open application windows, the session error recurred. I was effectively unable to shutdown the machine and had to switch it off at the wall. Some notable details: Firefox would not close manually because it had an active download that had got stuck. It would close after cancelling the broken download. But the session would still not save. Recoll had crashed. Forcing quit made no difference to the session error. It was largely impossible to open new programs, even after all open programs had been closed and the desktop was clear. These programs would not start: gedit, firefox, terminal, catfish, search, Recoll These programs would start: session startup, screenshot, volume control. As you can see, I was forced to switch off at wall.
[Bug 1289793] [NEW] Saved sessions don't remember xfce workspaces
Public bug reported: The session manager opens almost all saved windows in the same workspace, regardless of which workspace they were in when they were saved. This appears to be a problem related to the applications. Gedit windows, for example, are all restored to their prior workspaces. Firefox's are not. (Gedit seemed to be handling sessions brilliantly at first. It would also keep docs in quiet sleep until the remote data disk they came from was mounted again. But it appears now to be simply crashing out and not loading at all). So, e.g. I just started from a saved session. The session opened in workspace 9 of 10. (I think this may have been the last active workspace at shutdown). The windows of that session had been spread across 10 workspaces. With the exception of terminal (I'm not sure if terminal knows what it's doing but it at least didn't pile into workspace 9 with all the others) and Gedit (which didn't open at all - it may not have made it into the saved session), they all loaded into worspace 9 : Firefox, Quod Libet, System Monitor, Okular, Tor, Thunar. Some of these windows were already in workspace 9 when I shutdown. I shall have to catalogue the behaviour more carefully. But this at least gets the gist of the bug down. The standard remedy appears to be, remove the Notification Area from the Panel and then replace it again. I did this. The network manager did not reappear. It is notable, as a user, that the network manager does not appear as one of the applications you can select in Panel preferences. Is it there normally? Or has it disappeared from the options because of the crash? It would be a serious omission if it is not normally there: it is an excellent and vital application. Users cannot do without it. Yet it seems they often have trouble with it disappearing. Stands to reason that something ought to be done urgently to make it a lot easier to get it going again if there are any problems. One thing that did happen when I removed the Notification Area from the Panel and then replace it again was that the dozen-or-so applications that were listed in the Notification Area preferences disappeared. I don't know if this is related to a system restart/new session (in an attempt to recover the network manager) and apps being cleared from memory. [Bug 1215182] Re: xfce 4 session manager does not save session
This problem seems to have been fixed. Has anything been updated or changed? Session manager is now saving sessions successfully and presenting them as options on startup. Sessions are restoring. It is brilliant. One glaring problem remains: it seems that no applications bar Gedit can remember in which xfce4 workspaces their windows where open. Gedit handles it very well. All the other apps - including Firefox and Terminal - just pile up like a car crash in the current workspace. With a lot of windows in a session, across multiple workspaces, that amounts to one royal pain in the ass. It rather takes the glow off the session manager. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1215182 Title: xfce 4 session manager does not save session To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfce4-session/+bug/1215182/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1287080] Re: network manager icon disappeared
Ignoring this EOL business for now, here's a quick fix, the problem and the solution. The quick fix is miraculous, really. You just type nm-applet on the command line. The problem was that Network Manager was deselected in Session Startup Dialogue. I probably did this and forgot all about it. So, technically speaking, there was no bug that lost the applet icon. Just my own dumb ass. But it is still the case that the nm-applet does not appear in the list of programs you can add the control panel when you right-click on it. This is a problem in case it does get lost. Or what do you do to stop it connecting automatically at start-up without losing it altogether? (That's a rhetorical question). So I hope this report has not been an entire waste of time. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1287080 Title: network manager icon disappeared To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-applet/+bug/1287080/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1220429] Re: gmusicbrowser lost saved lists
You may be interested in knowing the same thing happens with Quod Libet. And specifically, the same thing happened to me when using Quod Libet: 1) music on external, USB HDD; 2) Playlist made with Quod Libet library of this disk; 3) Over time... 4). One time opened Quod Libet before connected external HDD, QL erased the playlists as it erased the library. So the offending routine, just to spell it out: check library - the device where it normally resides isn't there? Okay, erase the library then and any user content built from this library. Three things to say about this. 1. This is likely a routine shared by multiple players - would someone be kind enough to identify what it is and assign this bug report accordingly? 2. The error seems to have arisen from a mistake in the program, er, logic. I.e. it might be assumed that if the library has been deleted then the player should remove that library's tracks from its records. But it does not similarly stand to reason that if the device is not there then the library has been deleted and is no longer needed. 3. The programmes fail to respect the emotional investment users make in their playlists. It's not just time. It's not just effort. It is often an activity conducted for the sake of someone or something. Whatever the reason, it is usually something of emotional value. It is therefore something that a programme should take particular care over. ** Also affects: quodlibet Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1220429 Title: gmusicbrowser lost saved lists To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/quodlibet/+bug/1220429/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1078741] Re: ALT+printscreen (PrtSc) for taking screenshots not working
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 642792 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/642792 I'm using xfce4-screenshoot 1.8.1-1 / amd64 I cannot get a keyboard press to do a print screen / screen shot. Any of the following key presses do nothing: Print Screen CTRL-Print Screen ALT-Print Screen SHIFT-Print Screen CTRL-ALT-Print Screen etc. It appears I am also unable to add a screenshot keyboard shortcut. Following the instructions given on this page: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xfce#Screenshots Go to: XFCE Menu -- Settings -- KeyboardApplication Shortcuts. Add the xfce4-screenshooter -f command to use the PrintScreen key in order to take fullscreen screenshots. See screenshooter's man page for other optional arguments. So this doesn't work either. This is what happens. Keyboard dialogue opens okay. Then the App Shortcuts dialogue opens ok. But when you add the command as instructed, you just get a message saying: Command shortcut command: xfce4-screenshooter -f shortcut: Cancel So it tells you the command you just put in. But creates no shortcut, not offers any way of creating a shortcut. It then offers you but one option: to cancel the operation you just started! Clearly, you don't want to cancel the operation. You want to complete it. Because you just want to get your keyboard shortcut working. But you may have forgotten that by now. And you may also find your vision has been consumed by a haze of berzerker red. Looking elsewhere just makes things work. Put screenshot in the settings manager gives no results, for example. Putting you head in a food processor might make you feel better. So to recap. You have a modern operating system. The screenshot button doesn't work. You try a variety of combinations. Still nothing doing. You try referring to the settings. You can't find any relevant settings. The screenshot GUI-dialogue has no settings option. Neither does it have a keyboard shortcut option. The universal settings dialogue has no screenshot option. You do a search and find some instructions. The instructions are arcane. And very particular. The way to do a keyboard shortcut for a screenshot is not to look for screenshot settings but for keyboard settings. You try those instructions. They don't work. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1078741 Title: ALT+printscreen (PrtSc) for taking screenshots not working To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfce4/+bug/1078741/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1223848] Re: Thunar hogging processor after problem mounting external drive
Here's a more specific account of this problem: External, USB, encrypted, windows disk. Click on disk in Thunar device list. Thunar throws a password window up. Cancel the action. Thunar closes the Window but retains the process. Thunar keeps the device busy in the Device list: its rotating icon still rotates, like it's waiting for something to happen. The Thunar process meanwhile takes about 11 per cent of CPU per Thunar window. i.e. with four windows open, Thunar will take 43 per cent of cpu resources. The xfce4-panel 'places' drop-down does not exhibit the same problems while this is happening with Thunar. So from here, if you click on the icon again, the same thing happens: Thunar throws the password window up, but it you don't put the password in it keeps hogging. Right-clicking gives you the options only to open or mount. Opening the window again at this point does not recreate the problem (unless you click on the disk and cancel the password action again). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1223848 Title: Thunar hogging processor after problem mounting external drive To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunar/+bug/1223848/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 798414] Re: update-initramfs should produce a more helpful error when there isn't enough free space
This is still happening. I can't stress enough what an incredible hinderance it is to the working day when your system starts crashing and you have to do the updates but the updates won't work because you have first to remove old kernel images your OS has not cleaned up. But it gave an error at the end: Package operation failed: the installation or removal of a software package failed. Did not say what package failed or why. Pressed OK On restart Apport reported a crash. It said there had been a problem updating the kernel image. I had a brief look at the report as I was filing it. It was concerned with the package Alsa. My internet connection had closed while the crash report was being compiled. I did not see this when I pressed the button file the report. Apport said it could not file a report because there wasn't a connection. It went away and did not come back. [Bug 1230231] [NEW] gnome-sound-recorder does not record
Public bug reported: gnome-sound-recorder not working. Failure was, initially, an attempt to get it recording streaming audio out of the box. That having failed, I tried changing its options, and my (alsa) sound options. Failing that I started looking for help online: the problem looked horribly complex and the way to a solution looked frought with difficulty, with a horrendously steep learning curve. It looked like I might have to learn all about Linux's underlying sound system just to get the recording device to work. I gave up and went back to my work without the hope that I might go an as before, doing the recording of streaming audio that had been an essential part of it. That was nearly a year ago when I upgraded to Xubuntu, and I have recovered the same steps again occassionally, just to check it still wasn't working, and just to check that I've not seen an easy solution because I'm stupid. I think I have come to understand that I'm not stupid; I'm a user. And the sound recorder doesn't work. In the sound-recorder interface, the options are stuck. 'Record from input' offers only one option: Master 'Record as' offers no options: it is blank. Pressing record does nothing. The sound level indicator is flat. I have played with some of the settings in the user interface for (Alsa) sound preferences. But it has acheived nothing. Most of the settings in the Alsa interface are not written in English anyway. They are written in some sort of arcane sound architecture language that can be understood by nobody but sound software experts, programmers and perhaps linux computer administrators. The Alsa output options are actually refreshingly comprehensible. They are written in plain English. But it's input options are gibberish. The Campaign for Plain English are worth a ganders. The idea of plain English is not that you have to write everything in goo-goo baby- language, or spell it out as if it is thought that users are idiots. You just have to write user interfaces in a way that allows people not immersed in the arcane world of sound architectures to use them. This is a bug because it doesn't work and because there is no way for a sensible user to find any reasonable way of getting it working. [Bug 1230231] Re: gnome-sound-recorder does not record
Woah there though. My description of Alsa user interface settings is only the *impression* I have after being unable to make any sense of them. The input settings are actually described in fairly plain English. All of the settings are not. And in combination, the effect is to overwhlem the user with technical gibberish. The programmers have obviously put a lot of effort into making an user-friendly interface. It just seems there's work to be done because it doesn't work and the interface doesn't help. So you are left with two choices: blame the sound interface or blame the sound recorder. I blame both. The one fails to work, the other fails to make any sense. And that is the crucial thing about the sound interface - it's hard to make sense of what should be a simple thing. I simply need to record streaming audio. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1230231 Title: gnome-sound-recorder does not record To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-media/+bug/1230231/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1230231] Re: gnome-sound-recorder does not record
Something else of note regarding the actual bug. The user interface for my (alsa) sound settings seems to only offer options when there is a sound programme active. The 'Recording' tab in my sound settings interface says: No application is currently recording audio. It says this even after I open Sound Recorder. Opening Audacity doesn't make any difference. Input devices has a thicket of options. So try this: You are a user. You want to record streaming audio. You find the recorder doesn't work. You go to input devices in the sound settings user interface. It has two lots of options. I.e. each option has a multitude of options. Ok, Fine. So lets see the 'Show' options: ' All input devices All except monitors Hardware input devices Virtual input devices Monitors ' So your first question is, where's streaming audio? I consider it a sign of my relative technical sophistication that the phrase 'streaming audio' makes sense to me. Just think how many people don't. How far would they get? Anyway, back to me. I can't see streaming audio. I don't even have any input device as far as I know. I have a computer. I don't have a microphone. I have an earphonse socket. I record my music on it. I listen to it in my earphones. I use the web. That's it. Devices? I dread to know the difference between hardware, virtual and monitor devices. I'm sure its interesting. But I don't have the luxury of spare time. Would that I had. So you select 'All devices' of course. It offers you then two other options. It offers you a volume control for Monitor of built in audio analogue stereo. And one for Built in audio analogue stereo. I don't even know what that is. Is it my sound card? Does my computer even have a sound card? I consider it a mark of my technical superiority over most nobby users that I even know that my computer *probably* doesn't have a sound card. It *probably* has a sound chip! Aren't I clever. If I had time to spare, I even might look it up. But I don't, so I'll get back to trying to get my sound recorder to work. As for what built in audio analogue stereo is, the prospect of looking it up online fills me with despair. This is just the first option. That could take a whole evening on its own. There's a whole thicket of options to get through yet. I mean, elsewhere it offers me an option for digital stereo. Isn't it all digital? How do I get it to record streaming audio? Anyway, built in audio analogue stereo is offers me some other options: microphone 1, microphone 2, line in, analogue input, video. None of them seem to describe anything I know. As far as I'm aware, I don't have any analogue input devices. What is an analogue input device? I don't have any microphones (being a superior sort of computer user, I know my computer *probably* has a mic built in somewhere, but I don't use it). I don't have a video connected. I don't even have a DVD playing. And 'line in' - is that like if you have an audio line going *in* to the back of your computer. I think I may have a line in. But I think last time I looked there may have only been a mic input. I don't remember. But I just need to record streaming audio anyway. I tried various options. Nothing seems to make any difference. It seems the sound settings user interface wants to be told about input devices. Is my sound card an input device? Is the web an input device? Dare I try and find the answer when the ground ahead looks very much like quicksand that will suck you in up to your neck in sound architecture before you know it? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1230231 Title: gnome-sound-recorder does not record To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-media/+bug/1230231/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1223321] Re: update-notifier notifies of phased-updates for which you may not be eligible
I don't know about the new summary Brian has put on this bug: update- notifier notifies of phased-updates for which you may not be eligible. But I do know that the original summary I put on it was perfectly comprehensible and that it has now been changed into something almost illegible ;) This is a user problem. It is not a technical problem. That is, though it may require a technical fix, the bug can only be understood when seen from a user's perspective. It may well be that the update notifier is telling me about phased updates for which I am not eligible. But it is a nonsense, from my perspective. (Sincere thanks, however, Brian for the background info). You see, I doubt even that the bug is a bug as error as Brian has described it. But I am certain it is a bug as I have described it. And the same will be true of other users. The bug is more likely to be recognisable and useful with its original summary. So for example, the update notifier tells me today there are 29 updates available. But the Software Updater tells me there are just 8. I will therefore be changing the summary back to its original, user's perspective. This also still looks like a security vulnerability from that perspective. And that counts for quite a lot at the end of the day, how much confidence a user has in his system. ** Summary changed: - update-notifier notifies of phased-updates for which you may not be eligible + update-notifier says 29 updates available but Software Updater says just 8 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1223321 Title: update-notifier says 29 updates available but Software Updater says just 8 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-notifier/+bug/1223321/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1223321] Re: update-notifier says 29 updates available but Software Updater says just 8
I just installed those 29 updates, by the way. And then my system does a popup that says: there are 20 updates available. So here I am with this new update message, and I think either my system didn't check the last lot of updates properly. Or it's got another bunch of updates it could only do after it had done the first lot. So you go back to the Software Updater again and, like Laurel and Hardy's car mechanic, you click on the update notifier, and it does indeed say there are 20 updates to install. So you click on 'update' a little reluctantly. And, yes it says there are no updates to install! And it sits there the update notifier icon, and you can click on it any time you like, and it will pop up saying, 'there are 20 updates to install', even though there are not. (It does in fact look like the new 20 might be the updates left from the 29 updates before: it could install only 8 of those, remember. So it installed the eight updates the Software Updater recognised and that leaves twenty... er... one. Twenty one. Okay we seem to have lost an update somwhere. We are still sure this is not a security vulnerability aren't we? Someone must be sure it's not a security vulnerability. Because it looks to me that when I just gave my Software Updater permission to install 8 updates it installed 9). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1223321 Title: update-notifier says 29 updates available but Software Updater says just 8 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-notifier/+bug/1223321/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1223848] Re: Thunar hogging processor after problem mounting external drive
Here's another example. External disk, encrypted, listed in Thunar devices. I click on it. Thunar brings pops up a password form. I enter the password incorrectly. The form disappears. I tried a few times. (Damned passwords). But then it seems Thunar hasn't let go of it. Thunar's 'busy' wheel is still turning beside drive in its devices list. The Thunar process is using 22% to 24% CPU. If I now click on the problem device I get this message: Failed to mount... operation already pending Ah. It's because I've got more than one instance of Thunar open on different workspaces. The Thunar password form uses 24% CPU while it's waiting. If I attempt to get the same disk in another window, Thunar gives an error. It would help if it linked to the other password process, perhaps summoning the form (not the other Thunar window as well). [Bug 1225656] [NEW] removed songs reappear in gmusicbrowser lists
Public bug reported: Populate a couple of lists of songs in gmusicbrowser. Remove one or two songs from one of them. Go to the other list. Then go back to the first. The removed songs will have reappeared, as if by magic. An aside of possible significance: There are also other, more significant, though unverified concerns with gmusicbrowser lists. I am fairly certain that my lists have gained songs I didn't put in them and lost songs that I did. This aside may, however, not be as straightforward as it may seem. Having not been catalogued, all I can see on this other point is that it seems to have happened with a fairly significant enough frequency for it to be a strong suspicion. I.e. there are definitely more than a few very odd songs appeared in my carefully curated lists. If there were just one or two I might put it down to hazy, late night flights of fancy. But its a not small few of very strange additions. More than a few tracks have most definately disappeared as well. Needless to say, with the above verfified error (and the earlier reported bug where gmusicbrowser deleted lists when the library wasn't connected), I am now feeling quite wary of using gmusicbrowser lists - and by extension, I am sorry to say, gmusicbrowser - at all. However, the earlier reported bug where gmusicbrowser deleted lists when the library wasn't connected caused me to follow a very useful piece of advice that may (at a - distant - outside chance) have had some impact on this aside. That is that I restored a fairly recent config file to restore the lost lists. I also copied the list part of the config to another machine so it could apply the same lists to the same (unchanged) library the same external disk. There might therefore have been some tracks added to the lists after the time of the chosen backup. And there might have been something wrong with the mapping of the lists when moved from one machine to another. I do doubt this though. At least a couple of the missing tunes were definately added much earlier than the chosen backup. And these were in lists in which the strange additions have not been made. So it couldn't be a mapping problem, at least not evidently there. Some of the tracks even seem to be in the wrong lists. And that really starts to put things in a spin. ** Affects: gmusicbrowser (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1225656 Title: removed songs reappear in gmusicbrowser lists To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gmusicbrowser/+bug/1225656/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1223848] Re: Thunar hogging processor after problem mounting external drive
This occurs in different scenarios. Here's one: Thunar devices list shows attached but unmounted external drive B. The drive is encrypted. In normal practice the following works as expected: mouse click drive B in Thunar devices list; Thunar gives popus asking for encryption password; password entered; Thunar accepts; drive mounts and opens in Thunar browser view. However, cancel the password form before entering the password and the following happens: - drive B in Thunar drive list shows a progress dial, that turns perpetually - Thunar process consumes about 15 per cent processing power perpetually Thunar doesn't want to let go. Click it again, you can enter the password and it opens okay. But it essentially gives you no choice option but to click again and enter the password. If you don't then Thunar will just sit there tapping its foot, hogging your processor. (Now as an aside here, there is an inconsistency that is a related but perhaps separate bug that is nevertheless worth mentioning. That is that if a drive is connected but not mounted, Thunar shows it so as a greyed- out entry in its drives list. But if, after you have mounted the drive, you use Thunar to dismount it (using, e.g. the Thunar eject buttton), the drive disappears from the list completely, meaning you have to intervene physically if you want to mount it again). Here's another scenario, recounted slightly flakily from notes, but this is a good enough account to give some help in diagnosing the problem: This error occured in a similar scenario the other day - another external USB disk that had been auto-dismounted on the count of midnight, also encyrpted. So the Thunar progress wheel is turning perpetually, using about 50 per cent processor time. I dismounted it from Thunar, but it stayed there in the devices list. I clicked on drive in Thunar devices list again. It disappeared from the list, and Thunar said: device not found. But the drive was still mounted because quodlibet music player was using it. I closed all apps using the device and tried to dismount it from the command line, but system said I couldn't because the drive was busy. Another backup icon appeared in the devices list when I wasn't looking. I ejected it successfully this time and that was that.

[Bug 1223321] Re: Software updater says there are 7 updates when there are only 2
Righto, Seth. Thanks. Apologies for the alarm. I see how the distinction between whether it *is* a secuirty vulnerability or *might be* one may be important from your point of view. The distinction in less marked for a user in no position to be able to discern the difference, or indeed tell if one that *might be* actually *is*. Look at it like this: if a user came to you and said, my update notifier says there are 14 updates and yet the Updater says there are 9 - can I go ahead and use the updater without fear than an attacker might find an avenue in this difference to slip in some malicious software? Would you be in a position to say, 'Go ahead: everything's fine'? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1223321 Title: Software updater says there are 7 updates when there are only 2 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/1223321/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
