[Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter
So... after ~6.5 years; 267 posts; and several thousand lines of unhappy, frustrated, and/or annoyed feedback, my man page is still lying to me about -t actually doing something and the devs are now adding "you can use someone else's software or write your own" to justify their design decision. Did I miss something? I was going to shake my head in disgust and quietly move to another notification daemon until I saw the last few posts discussing how many people are annoyed by this issue. I would like to add myself to the statistic of "very unhappy, but would normally not comment on this bug report." Side note: Since other operating systems were brought up in the last post, I would like to note that Windows 10 (and presumably Vista through 8.1) at least have a global configuration option for their notification timeout duration. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/390508 Title: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/390508/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 607117] [NEW] dnspython-1.7* uses /dev/random which might block on lucid
Public bug reported: The python-dnspython package (most specifically, dns/resolver.py at line 25-29) uses /dev/random to get random data. I observed that this blocks on /some/ machines that have Ubuntu 10.04 installed. It does not seem to happen on older versions. This causes the import of dns.entropy to block most of the time (but not always). The solution is to use /dev/urandom instead. Two possible ways to solve this problem: 1. Provide a 1.8.0 package in the main repositories - it seems to have the bug fixed and is a maintenance release according to the homepage 2. replace '/dev/random' with '/dev/urandom' in entropy.py, line 25. I tested this solution and it no longer causes the import to block. ** Affects: dnspython (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- dnspython-1.7* uses /dev/random which might block on lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/607117 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 492111] [NEW] Nautilus integration requires user to manually copy a file
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: bzr-gtk To reproduce: 1. Install bzr-gtk with all the dependencies. 2. Restart the machine. 3. Open nautilus and enter a folder with bzr project. [Bug 483070] [NEW] Unable to install Ubuntu 9.10; livecd freezes completely
Public bug reported: Steps: 1. Boot the system from livecd. 2. Open some files and programs (I used gparted to move make a place for the system). 3. Watch the system freezes completely after some time (~half an hour). Keyboard and mouse don't work, even the Ctrl-Alt-Del and Alt-SysRq magic. The issue is related to the cd/dvd drive (LG GSA-4167B), happens always when/immediately after the disc was spinning. The drive is perfectly healthy, works ok under two versions of Windows and worked ok under previous versions of Ubuntu (up to 8.04 IIRC). However, the freezes happens always under updated 9.10 too. I though it was a bug introduced by some update and attached myself to #74372, but I've checked if I can reproduce from a clean install (or *livecd*, in this case). I can, so for the case of clarity (#74372 has some noise) I report it here. Also important: it's probably not hal related as the freeze happens when the hal isn't even started. Nothing appears in the udev log too. I suspect Ubuntu kernel, as it stops before any message appears in any logs. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: freeze hang livecd ** Description changed: Steps: 1. [Bug 388633] Re: ComboBox has a big blank area above the position of its control
mac_v: This approach makes it look more pleasant, but let's take another approach and look at it from some perspective. Ideally, when the ComboBox menu is shown, all items are visible and the selected option is placed under the cursor. We all agree this is requested behaviour and we see this in 90% of Gnome applications. Problems arise in 2 situations: 1. There are too many options to display them all in a manner described above. 2. ComboBox is placed near the bottom of the screen. Both are corner cases. Ad. 1. User know there are many options and excepts arrows allowing her to see all entries. Presenting the current item under the cursor may be a good thing, because otherwise it could be even a few-screens-of- scrolling away. Ad. 2. GTK+ Developers chose here to prefer the Error prevention principle rather than Visibility principle. Therefore it is easy to click and don't change selected entry (by clicking at the current entry, pressing Escape or clicking somewhere else), while it's harder to see all options and make a choice. In a dialogue between user and the computer, developers chose that user will probably click the ComboBox and don't change it's value, rather than click in order to change it. *** Looking at consistency at the whole desktop level, it may puzzle some users (why it doesn't display all entries? when window was placed in the other part of the screen, all of them were visible?). Moreover, GNOME Human Interface Guidelines [1] says that menu items (it should in a way apply to ComboBox items too) should all be visible: Do not remove command items from the menu when they are unavailable, make them insensitive instead. When all items are visible when there is place for them (even disabled ones!), we should apply this rule to all the cases in order to improve consistency. When disabled items are drawn using other style (insensitive, disabled ones), the other style could be used to mark out the current item (bold?). Then it would be still easy to go back and all options could be visible without the awkward arrows. Maybe user testing would be useful here - upstream probably won't make any change here: good that this bug is already closed. otherwise I would be tempted to WONTFIX it at this point. [Bug 74372] Re: System freezes when inserting a CD/DVD
Teej, attached all necessary files. I don't know if they would be useful, no messages appeared when the freeze happened. Steps I did: 1. Restart. 2. sudo /etc/init.d/hal stop 3. sudo hald --verbose=yes --daemon=no 21 | tee /home/mati/hal.log 4. After the output settled down, I inserted a cd (13:54:23) 5. Some messages appeared, but the system was still operational. 6. After some seconds, the freeze occured (cursor couldn't move, system didn't respond to keyboard, had to do a hard reset) 7. I launched lshal just after a reset. My hal version is 0.5.12~rc1+git20090403-0ubuntu3 (system: up-to-date 9.04); Currently I cannot perform a clean install (I did that when 8.04 was released). Paul, please read comments in bug 161960, the key would still function properly as a modifier (and used for the menu only when released alone). It's a severe thing, as many many of Ubuntu users come from the platform where Super_L is used that way, and Alt-F1 is really not easily discoverable. -- WIN key SUPER_L should be mapped to Applications menu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/54024 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 161960] Re: Add function to WinKey button on keyboard
Not every Ubuntu user has a mouse with scroll wheel, so let's forget implementing it. Sorry, Teej, but this argumentation is just silly. I believe this key can be set in addition to Alt-F1 (so Mac users can be happy) and be used *only when released*, so all super+key shortcuts will work. [Bug 388613] [NEW] Lack of preloading - very slow drawing of images
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: f-spot Our default photo application, lacks caching when watching photos. It would be nice if the next image would appear instantly, without redrawing, just like in gqview (which should be used as a reference in speed). [Bug 161960] Re: Add function to WinKey button on keyboard
Ubuntu is not Windows, and is not intended to be compared to or mimic the Windows OS in any way. This is ridiculous. Windows simply does a better use of a keyboard, as Ubuntu currently have a black hole in that area. Completely *aside* from other operating systems: I installed Ubuntu on my friend's computer, and while trying it, he - out of curiosity - tried to press the key, just to see what happens. He was cheerless when he discovered it does nothing. He didn't know a shortcut to open a main menu and reached for a mouse every time. I don't see the problem. This is easily configured using Keyboard shortcuts. It is a problem, as majority of users doesn't ever see that options. Ubuntu should come with a *best* set of available configuration options, lack of those is an usability mistake. IMHO Ubuntu Dx Team should look at this and see what would be the best use of the key. Gnome-Do maybe, with a first-time tutorial? ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: Invalid = New ** Tags added: defaults keyboard usability -- Add function to WinKey button on keyboard https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/161960 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 388656] [NEW] Non-intuitive term Move to trash
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus When browsing through file context menu, I've noticed that I couldn't find a command to delete it. Only after examining each item, I found Move to trash. IMHO it's unintuitive. An user doesn't want to move a file/folder, but to remove it (the fact that there's an undo - a trash, shouldn't change the terminology). The term move misses what user wants to do. Simple Delete would be *much easier to spot*, especially when the menu has many items (16 in my case). It would be simpler and it would be shorter. When user enables permanent deleting in preferences, the term could be Delete permanently. The issue was already raised many times before in some places (e.g. http://www.mail-archive.com/usabil...@gnome.org/msg03430.html - see 4. Connected all similar bugs. Symptoms: System hangs completely after inserting cd/dvd disc (instantly or after few seconds, only a hard reset helps then).
