The fact that this still hasn't been resolved in the public release
after almost 15 years is, quite frankly, disgusting.
These kind of amateurish bugs and the utter inability of anyone to fix
them years, or in this case, DECADES later is exactly why nobody takes
open-source software seriously.

1: What? Because that would be productive given how the bug is now
(finally) in fix comitted status. Oddly enough not until after another
complaint and one day after at that.
2: Even if that weren't the case I don't have time because I lose too
much time at work thanks to, ironically enough, the
@johnlea; I waited a month and a half to respond to this just to make a
point. We're at the what... 3.5 month mark? Absolutely zero progress has
been made and I have to say this is hardly a stumper. This goes as much
for criticism of Ubuntu as well. Unity2D isn't anywhere near ready for
primetime.
...and we're now at six weeks for what should have been resolved in
under a day. As I've said, it's pretty clear at this point how much the
Ubuntu project values unity 2d and those who use it.

This is unbelievably inconvenient and IMO shows the dire lack of use
testing put into unity2d. This is a showstopper IMO and unity2d should
NEVER have been released in this state. The fact it STILL hasn't been
fixed after over two weeks shows just how little importance the Ubuntu
project places on
There's something larger at play here. This goes beyond Ubuntu or
laptops specifically. I can confirm this exact same problem in a custom-
made DESKTOP machine running Debian Squeeze.

As an additional comment, I should note that only X is slow. You can
switch into one of the other terminal views (CTRL+ALT+F2 for example)
and the responsiveness is fairly normal.

Here's a really interesting thing about the problem though. At least in
lenny, if I change it to output through aRts first and then start
playback and then switch to ALSA *WHILE IT IS PLAYING*. It will play
even with the EQ on.

A full reinstall of all the openoffice packages as well as a rm -rf
.openoffice.org2 seems to have cleared up the problem. I can no longer
reproduce it myself.

I find that changing the output plugin to Pulse Audio will correct the
problem. The problem still remains with all other output plugins.
Perhaps since there is a strong emphasis on Pulse Audio in new versions
of Ubuntu, setting this as the default output plugin would be prudent.

Using Kubuntu Gutsy Herd 3 on Athelon 64 x2 3000+, Asus Crosshair
motherboard, 8GB system ram. Only non-default aspect of configuration is
the nvidia-glx-new driver
What makes this problem so OFFENSIVE is that it would take the package
maintainer all of 5 minutes to fix the problem. Ubuntu claims its
biggest bug is bug #1 and yet as long as crap like this keeps taking
WEEKS to fix, it doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of ever making
it that far.

Yes. The built-in automatic upgrade from Edgy to Feisty. That machine
still has the drivers, I'm not sure if it's because the machine is
Ubuntu and not Kubuntu or if it's because it's an upgrade that the
printer driver is still there but either way, the printer driver is
still there on that
Anyone know where Ubuntu keeps all the .deb packages for the debug
symbols? This isn't the first time this has happened and I'd like to be
able to produce slightly more useful reports then stacktraces full of

I find that you CAN just tell it to burn with K3B, select the writer
drive from the 2nd selector (instead of ISO) and then when K3B shows up
at the end, do it that way. It's roundabout but at least it works at

That is a a minor patchover and does not solve what I am trying to do.
I know how to edit the mime DB myself. My issue here is that changing the Open
With option simply overrides the default application handler. It doesn't
change the underlying mime type. For example: you could right click on
